Things in manga/anime you're sick of seeing

This may get me some flack, but this has to do a little more with One Piece than most other manga I've read. It's having characters pop out and say stuff that happened only a few moments ago.

"Ahh! He beat the pacifista in one punch!" Etc. Stuff like that.

It's called comentation/commentating etc.

And it's an ancient long cliche in manga, to the point where Sakigake Otokojuku had half it's panels during fight chapters devoted to characters describing what just happened to everyone who has already seen it, or parroting the lines the opponent just said, sometimes on the same page the line was uttered.

It got to a point where an opponent would say a line at the end of a chapter, then repeat it at the begining of the next, and that would get repeated again one panel lower.

If anything OP barely does it at all, whereas in SO it's extremely grating.

The bolded stands out o me and I automatically think of a mother… then look at the beginning of the statement and see 'Hero' and go "Yup, I just proved your point."

I think it's weirder when it's the girl that has a crush and actually internally hopes for a pat on the head. I could rant on that for hours. If it's to affectionately ruffle someone's hair that's fine. Not a good boy, good girl pats head like a dog.

I think you should visit Seattle. My friends and I rarely hug and we've know each other for over a decade. Fist bumping seems to be the normal lately for people I've hung out with…

I guess you have a point though about the cultural thing. It just feels so condensending to me, I think usually cause where I've mostly seen it the female is younger and literally begging for attention sometimes. (usually those characters are unbearably irritating). I expect a doggy treat to be thrown at some point.

I'd be really stupid if I thought all recurring things in manga applied to IRL Japan. And since I'm not Japanese, nor have I ever lived in Japan, I gotta take what I see with a grain of salt if no one's ever explained it to me.

From what I've gathered during my time on the internet, PDA isn't really a thing over there. And from that, I always thought head patting seemed really out of place, so I just took it as manga shorthand for romantic or character development (since… most manga I've read fail at developing actual chemistry between love interests, and have the heroine's "character development" be her learning to rely on the hero to solve her problems for her instead of working through them herself), rather than something that really happens IRL.

Over here, you pet your dog, kitty cat, lizard, other pets, and maybe even your small child if you're being affectionate; but pretty much never teenagers or grownups. Because of that, my feelings about it are similar to Cyclone's: Those scenes always feel like the guy is looking down on the girl and treating her like a little kid. They feel really condescending, instead of heartwarming like they're intended to be.

LOL here I can understand the cultural thing being commented on. I may live in Wisconsin now but I was born & raised in Texas … and yeah, hugs are big. I am not big 'touchy feely type' but friends hug in greeting, in passing, when they leave, in congratulation and that's mild. Guys aren't safe from each other either, there is big bro-hugs too (that half hug that lasts a sec because "we're too manly for real hug but gotta show the bro support somehow" thing)... I had a great- grandma that was big on hugs ... :getlost: it was like getting hugged every time you passed by her even though I was staying with her for days, not just an hour :getlost:

It's kinda hard to separate what I'm viewing from a foreign country and my culture. I'll admit that. It's just going to be the feeling I get regardless. I almost slapped a male friend for patting my head. Part of that was I had just gotten my hair did. The other part was I'm not a kid, and such a gesture is usually reserved for children (where I'm from).

I consider that to be different. It's not a stand alone act, which is what I keep seeing in manga/anime. Stroking hair can be soothing.

I'm a bit weird about hugging in general. But maybe I'll throw that in the Confession thread lol.

Like I said before: Based on what I knew up to that point, I had thought it was just one of those thing that only happened in manga. I thought it was in the same boat as other common manga scenes (like, for example, the ~bad boy love interest~ kissing the heroine at the beginning of a shoujo manga): a plot device that easily does something that might take a lot longer to accomplish otherwise. But since you explained that it wasn't, I now know I was wrong in thinking that.

I won't lie, my initial assumption's probably gonna be my kneejerk reaction for awhile longer; but now that I know better, I at least know there's no point in bitching about it. :U

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Toriko, Fullmetal Alchemist, and I don't believe I've ever seen one in One Piece.

Didn't they try to force Gohan into a friendship induced power up during the Cell fight? And Krillen getting killed sent Goku over the edge into Super Saiyan against Freeza.

If I remember correctly, Goku's plan was to have Gohan fight Cell and, one way or another, his powers would awaken. Ultimately, seeing 16's head get crushed was what caused him to go SSJ2.

And Krillen getting killed sent Goku over the edge into Super Saiyan against Freeza.

Yeah, as I said, rage-induced. I think there's a pretty fine difference between that and friendship.
