Luffy wanting to protect everything stems from his recent losses:
1. Crew got separated because he couldn't do anything against Kuma
2. Lost his brother Ace
It's too early to forget these things.

Wow, they sure are foreshadowing the Reverie arc… Cobra bed-ridden and super aged.
Fukaboshi was absolutely awesome this chapter. Manboshi even took a hit for his sister. Erm, what did Ryuuboshi do again?
It's nice to see that Hodi is at least giving Luffy a bit of a fight.
The flashback transition was a bit odd. I had to pause and reread a few pages to get it.
Hody koed ryuuboshi last chapter, today was manboshi's turn.
Seriously ,It's not obvious to anyone else that Hody is Fisher Tiger's illegitimate Son?
His sole purpose is to stop equality with humans but we've always asked ourselves why? well idk about you but this theory is the only one that sounds plausible. Just think about it what would of made Fukaboshi go from scolding Hody to Pitying him? "I Know Hody's true character" Pensive sad face instead of "I know Hody's true character" lets go kick his ass face Just saying that Hody being Fisher Tigers Son would be a HUGE Revelation.
After reading, those were my thoughts as well. Very glad that we have some plot development, or at least foreshadowing for more plot development.
Unless Cobra is sick in bed for the rest of the series the events of Reverie will be happening soon after FI no doubt about it. It's going to be interesting to see how Vivi's actions will affect the Straw Hat's weather they crash the site or not. Two Reverie meetings ago the discussion known to readers was centered around Dragon. By now his influence has gotten even greater plus Vivi knows Luffy is his son. We have allot to look forward to!
I expect at least 1 more flash back revolving around Hodi, revealing more about Jinbe, then finally we just may see the raid on Marijoa by Tiger. As for the ancient ark and it's flash back, I wonder if we will get a Norland type scene or just Roger type scene with a character just speaking about the past. Either way it's exciting to just know what the truth is.
For you haki haters, are you happy that Hodi was able to bypass Luffy's CoA? Along with Luffy acknowledging his haki isn't strong enough that should be even more unnecessary proof that haki is not over powered.
How do people get confused? The words get jacked up all the time, you gotta draw certain conclusions with how bad translators go about it. Then find posts by aohige for clarification. Then you've got to figure how Oda goes about drawing his flash backs, black for big, grey for mini.
Wow, actually had time to go, read the chapter calmly, and come back to first reply? What is the world coming to… o_o
Anyway... GREAT chapter! Luffy's showing he's got brains with his brawns now... relatively speaking! :D
Thats cause the rest of us had been up for like 30+ hours waiting for chapter and passed out on the computer.
I kinda didnt like this chapter, its seems pretty not amazing to me somehow,
It's alot of build-up. Naturally it isn't the best chapter ever.
Well its not that bad, but its not that great either,
Although Im excited for the real intention of Hodi Jones, will he be a good guy after all? or is he really a bad guy? what is his true character? will he be the next straw hat crew member? - hehe just a dumb predicitions
looks like vivi will be going to the revire instead of her father.luffy is being a little more smarter in his fight with hody. making him fight on his chosen battlefield. Fukaboshi was pretty damn beast taking on hody like that . taking all the damadge and still surviving love him

You "may be" "most likely" "sort of" not included enough lack of conviction…. "perhaps"?
The poor translation probably has something to do with it, but I'll go ahead and say it: this might be the worst chapter of One Piece I've read.
…was still better than Naruto.
Nothing annoys me more than people who unnecessarily bring up how much they hate Naruto/Bleach on One Piece forums.
Maybe, but he looks way too old after 2 years.
That's what happens when you've got a teen princess (who I'm sure has had some clandestine runaways with Choza) and a kingdom to look after. Poor Cobra he's feeling the toll already
I thought it was just the spoiler, but the chapter itself is confusing. I don't think much of this is to blame on the translation. The fighting was nice but the flashback was ill placed. For once it might have been better to show this when it first happened. I remember there being quite large gaps on the road to the fight at the plaza anyway. This is not good writing to me.
About the chapter:
It was not good, I hoped to see some SH team action.
And I am not sure what to think about Hody's "true character"…
I am not that interested in Hody.

I imagine you'll get your wish next chap; if he bothered to keep this revelation secret, it's not likely we'll find out about it until every other Straw Hat has finished their various scuffles.

Also add "Couldn't touch Magellan".
Hm…Being Fisher Tiger's son could be plausible...maybe? I'd have to look at the timeline stuff again. But I'd wonder if maybe Hodi was a halfbreed.
Anyways that's actually a pretty good idea to air blast the ship. I like that the characters in One Piece plan for things in case plan A fails or what have you.

Unless that was presented real well, I'd feel like it was a copout to be honest.
Hodi's words also weren't said softly since the Princess and apparently Luffy heard. Luffy just didn't understand it's significance.
Actually, after looking at the chapter again, I'm starting to think that only Fukaboshi heard what Hody said, and Luffy/Princess/brothers were reacting to Hody slashing Fukaboshi again on the next page.
Noah has probably been protected all these years to be used by the Fishfolk to escape the island once it is in danger (and Shirley's prediction fuels that). It seems big enough to hold maybe all of the island's population, and could lead to the Fishfolk finally getting freedom and start integrating with humans more. But that'd take a long time, of course. I'm interested in knowing whether the ship is connected to the Void Century…
Nice chapter. I bit difficult to make out what's happening at times. I expect it'd be easier to see in the anime. And Oda has finally added a dimension to Hody... much needed. It's a bit like he did with Lucci... waited until later on to reveal his background. I'm betting Hody's background will be more interesting.

By this shitty translation I still prefer the translation Aohige did with the spoiler
Fukaboshi: Did you hear, Strawhat? Now we understand Hody Jones' true character
That truth was…?
Meh, I still feel that Hody isn't good enough as a villain. Ok chapter overall, at least I'm a bit curious to his true character now.

Okay. Didn't realize Aohige translated Fukaboshi saying they all heard it.
Fukaboshi: Did you hear, Strawhat? Now we understand Hody Jones' true character

Had forgotten about that, it makes things much more simple indeed.
That is not how bubbles work. A bubble forms in in water when the water is displaced volumetrically by the presence of a gas.
@Thousand:
The bubble will be devoid of water. The ship will push through the bubble without letting water go through with it. It's not gonna wrap around the whole area
But by now the ship is already filled with water, if they shoot a bubble around it and it wraps around the ship then the ship will stay filled with water.
Hody you crazy son of a bitch, you were hiding a small fin under your big blade-fin the entire time!
But by now the ship is already filled with water, if they shoot a bubble around it and it wraps around the ship then the ship will stay filled with water.
I'm pretty sure the inside is mostly air-free. It was only just now that Hody broke the bubble and there's only that tiny hole made by Van Der Decken for it to get through. By the time the new bubble surrounds it, not enough water would have filled inside it to make a difference. And besides, even full of water, it would take about half the space of the bubble.
But by now the ship is already filled with water, if they shoot a bubble around it and it wraps around the ship then the ship will stay filled with water.
We know there has to be some air pockets in Noah. Decken is still in there on the floor foaming at be mouth.
You didn't know? This is why Hodi hates humans…and fishmen...and everything for that matter...
=
I think Alabasta characters will be back very soon…..just like the Baroque Works cover story set up Croc, Bon, Daz, and 3 for ID, I feel like the covers showing Igaram, Pell, Chaka, Vivi, Cobra, and Kohza is setting up a future arc involving Alabasta (Reverie).....
My somewhat off the wall theory is that ailing Cobra's throne is not taken by Vivi or Kohza....necessitating Vivi's return to the SH crew. There's something big that will happen at Reverie...idk what cause I'm not Oda. lol Well that's kinda out there, but whatever. I've felt Vivi would be an important character in the New World ever since she was included in the Post-War arc and directly commented on Luffy's tattoo / message to his crew.

Hodi is…a girl?! What a twist!
Seriously though, this chapter was pretty good and I will admit, I got thrown off a little when the flashback transitioned in and out. However, I gained my bearings again and found the chapter to be quite enjoyable. Hodi has been an "okay" villain, but nothing too note-worthy. I am interested to hear what his "true character" is, but I ain't gonna bother with making an outlandish theory.
Almost feared a Hodi flashback. I really don't give a fuck what happened to him in his past to make him this way. Drugs obviously ruined his brain.
The most confusing aspect of that mini-flashback was the dialog. Man this translation had me groaning; I understand an editor should have fixed the wording, but if anything that would likely have only led to further misunderstanding with the translation. Anyway, I think people are reading too far into Luffy's "I'll protect everything" statement; Hodi said he couldn't protect anything, and Luffy in turn boasted that he could (or would) protect everything. Anything, everything. Not literally everything, but everything he chose to protect, he would. Successfully.
I think Hody mother was "raped" by a human and tortured…and he's half human half fishmen.
@Vongola_Boss_XI:

Kohza doesn't make any sense. He's not married to Vivi so he's not a Prince. He's still a commoner, now with a title in urban development. If Vivi doesn't take the throne, it'd go to Igaram, who is the Chancellor, essentially.
Also, good chapter. I don't think Hodi was a slave or anything like that, but rather a half-breed that was rejected by both societies. That's why he doesn't seem to be as strong as other Fishmen without the ES. It would also explain why he wants the destruction of FI as much as he hates humans. He could have lived with his human mother or father, who was probably a noble, and then was forced to run away from Mariejois down to FI to keep from being killed.
HE IS STRONGER than other fishman. He wasn't on drugs when he destroyed a wall with only his GRIP.
Its only Zoro who was that much stronger than him.
You know, I like the "Hody is Fisher Tiger's son" theory, though I'm not sure how the entire population of Fishman Isle (including Fukaboshi) missed that the hero's lineage was amongst them all this time. Why hide that information for so long? Why is it supposed to be a secret, anyway?
The more I think of it the more it seems as if the Fishman district has a darker history to it when compared to the rest of FI. For starters, why was the ark moored or better stucked on the FD instead of being on FI?. Besides it has been known for a while that it used to be an outlaw zone until FT gained control and put some order into it. Other information regarding the place is that most of the children dwelling in it are orphans. My logical conclussion as to why Hody is so pissed off with humans and friendly fishfolks would be that his parents were killed by Humans and a Mer-fishfolk was involved in the process ( although I must admit the Fisher tiger theories that I've read are quite interesting). Those are my two cents.
I'm only hoping Hodi doesn't turn out to be another slave; we have plenty of those martirs already. Though if his mind was twisted as a product of slavery (as in your mother was taken, treated as a slave, raped and you got to see it all) then I wouldn't mind. Now Makro and his crew are suddenly appearing on my mind.
Loved the chapter! Every week just keeps adding on anticipation! This Reverie interests me… does anyone think it will be shown in the manga? If it is, Vivi will probably return!

It would make sense that he kept his Mothers maiden name similar to Ace.
Personally I think No one knew not even Jinbe,or maybe he did can't really tell but from what I gather from the first Flashback Hody was always focused on when it had anything to do with Tiger, when The news spread about him defying the World Nobles Hody as a kid was so inspired even more so then his friends [[imo]] and even more conclusive was when Jinbe visits Ryuguu to tell Neptune the truth behind Tigers death,we all clearly see Hody in the backround with a sinister smile on his face.[[maybe this when he finally snapped?]]
Also has anyone else noticed The Fishman district is severely underdeveloped plot wise ,I mean Oda gave us a brief [[and I man Brief ]] Description of it and he barely has any clear shots of the place except for that wide shot we always see with Noah in the backround and ofc the ever so absent Fishman Karate dojo [[which Hody is a practitioner]] dunno just some interesting.
Btw I can't buy into the Half breed theory cuz it doesn't really make sense since Hody looks full Fishman lol and we've seen a half breed before they basically look like humans with Fish features like a fin or a gill.
So Yea either he was a former slave like Tiger or He's Tigers Son.
People need to stop saying they don't like Hodi. Like WTF? Just because he isn't strong physically? The fishman has taken all of Luffys shots and remained standing. He just bit Luffys arm. Give him some credit
Plus I can truly say his cause is way more justifiable than at least half of the previous villains we've had before.
Hodi is Fishman Island's You-Know-Who. Don't you see it? Trying to overthrow the current government, loathing humans and people who disagree with him, slowly crippling himself, all the transformation stuff, him (well, his hair) turning white, …
The whole "promise made centuries ago to protect the ark until someone came" sounded very skypean-like, at least it reminded me of how Wiper tried to keep the promise his ancestor had made centuries ago.
I'm also looking forward to understanding more about Hody, but I don't think his revelation will have anything to do with who his parents were, or at least I hope not. I hope he reveals something about being tied to some greater power outside of fishman island, but we'll see. I see a lot of people don't really like him as a character, I think he has played a good role of posing an actual threat to the strawhats without actually overpowering them (as many people pointed out, being overpowered before they reached the new world would defeat the purpose of their 2 year training).
On a side note, I actually worried about Decken when Hody popped the bubble on Noah, but, even is he is a hammer, being a fishman should mean he wont be in any real danger of dying, ha.
Hody is Fishman Island's You-Know-Who. Don't you see it? Trying to overthrow the current government, loathing humans and people who disagree with him, slowly crippling himself, all the transformation stuff, him (well, his hair) turning white…
Do you mean Voldemort?
He's gonna say "nothing"
hes just pure hatred simply by nature!! … jk, i dunno whats gonna happen.
also Coookie obviously meant Hitler :P
I sincerely hope his "big secret" isn't that he was a slave. I mean, after Hancock and Fisher Tiger pulling that reveal, it's kinda lost all impact.
that said, I have no frigging clue what it could be. Surprise me, Oda!

Oh yeah. That's it.
His disregard for human AND fishman lives, the clear lack of morals even to his own standards (even ARLONG had his own values), his reliance on drugs, his vicious cruelty, asssassintion of his queen…
NONE of those have anything to do with why he's hated. Nuh-uh.
It's because he's not strong physically. Right.
..... Dude, you need some rest.

Aohige I think he means as a character, he has been a nice villan, people that he is talking about are probably the dumbass that don't like him because "he isn't strong", atleast that is what I'm assuming lol.

But Aohige….
Everything you just described are reasons to like Hody. No one likes a moralistic good natured VILLAIN
People here say "they don't care for Hody" or hes "Lame". THATS what I mean by "don't like". I'm trying to get them to not like him to like him lol (INCEPTION)
very intense chapter! so many things happening at once! i like it
