A large chunk of that is purely porting over the production team, so that it automatically looks nice and like a Ghibli film. How much of it is his son's actual skill as a storyteller and a director? And would he ever have gotten the job if he WASN'T his son?

I agree he wouldn't have the job if he wasnt the son. However, I can't imagine it being easy living under the shadow of a father like Miyazaki. He must have learned a lot more about film-making than anyone around his age, being constantly exposed to his father's work.

So far Goro's films have been based off existing source material. I'd wait until he makes a feature film with an original story, without old Miyazaki no doubt breathing down his neck, to judge his creative abilities.

I have to feel sorry for Miyazaki, there's just no one talented enough to take up the mantle and lead Ghibli.
There were two actually, one was basically rejected from Ghibli, and other died.
(excluding Takahata obviously, who is even older than Miyazaki)

I wonder if Miyazaki now feels regret for not hiring Hosoda.

imo Earthsea was not that bad, and poppy hill was pretty good. his son may be able to fill his shoes if Miyazaki gives him some room to breath

I like the old style and pace better. Ever since the timeskip things have felt rushed in between arcs.
