Is this sexism shenanigans still going on? I really don't understand why folks have a hard time grasping the inherent cultural attitudes that manifest within artistic works. Japan's culture is inherently sexist. What is so hard to grasp about that?
One of the 3 main characters of the chapter spent the majority of her dialog complaining about sexism. You can expect the conversation about it to last all week.

At some point you need to put all the ideas on the table together and go "you know what? Which one doesn't suck?" Because to be perfectly honest, I haven't seen an alternative that I can really buy into. I mean what's the largest rival contending theory on this one. That Zoro's character is a giant contradiction that Oda can't manage to keep straight? With him basically calling himself out on it in the same chapter?
The response to it not having more evidence in this chapter falls mostly to "well, of course not, since this subplot that will span over 1000 chapters is bound to be drawn out and leave us in suspense and questioning things."

You said that SHs don't know about Usopp's back story I think Luffy knows about Yasopp. I hope I got that form the Manga and not the anime. I do believe the romantic angle. I'm not being sarcastic about it. Though I do realize it's in the realm of pretty out there speculation.

The way I see it - it was a good chapter that was fun to read and people have blown this all out of proportion. And maybe Zoro is or isn't sexist. Does it really matter? Luffy's a selfish little prick, Sanji is definitely sexist, Nami's a bitch, Robin's morbid as all hell, Franky is both sexist and a major perve, Brook is a creepy-ass pervert. Chopper and Usopp are the only two straight-men in the crew and one's a talking reindeer who transforms while the other is a pathalogical liar and (almost) complete wuss.
Does it mean we love them any less? Hell no.

Don't want Sanji to become like Luffy who doesn't give a damn about gender. Just that maybe next time he fights in the same position that he was in against Kalifa i would like him to actually Struggle as HELL(mentally) and strike back.
In my opinion the Kalifa fight was the most i dispised about him, more so than the nosebleeds or anything his done.

Oh, I didn't expect a reply to the vast majority of it. I realized when I posted it that it acted mostly just as an addendum to what you'd written anyway. I sort of thought I might get a response about the love thing at the time, though. Of course, I'm emotionally conflicted about your romantic angle. On one hand, I gauged your intentions correctly to begin with, but on the other hand, I disagree. D: It's fine, though, I have some out there stuff that a lot of people object too as well (like when there was a forum-wide roast of me for my reincarnation theory). I am a little surprised you said that and got out mostly unscathed.
With Usopp's backstory, I actually meant what happened to his mom and how he turned into a compulsive liar. That's something the rest of the crew may never learn, because I have a hard time imagining Usopp coming out and being up front and honest about it without reason. There was a bit of a disconnect between the anime and manga in how the Yasopp thing was handled. Luffy actually remembered when Usopp and Kuro first clashed at the mansion. Doesn't really change anything, though, since he still remembered.

And you've got my "theory" wrong. I don't think Oda is criticizing society or his industry. I think he's writing what he sees as normal, flawed characters, but normal is relative, so I was unhappy at first. It would indeed be quite a theory to think that this is all leading to some comeuppance, as my satirical theory 2 would suggest. But you're right- character development is far more likely, in general, than something with no little to no evidence. As I've said, I would LOVE it if Oda took the mess of this chapter and went somewhere exciting with it. What will be dissatisfying is if both of us are let down. That is, if the issue is never touched again (or at least not for another 500 chapters). Because then you won't have your hypothetical character development, and I won't have a justification for chapter 687. But I don't have high hopes for that, because in comparing simplicity of possible eventualities, "Oda was raised in a relatively sexist country" is not only the simplest, but a demonstrable truth.

Agreed, the character development was the highlight of this chapter for me.
Zoro being badass as usual was good too. I like it how Oda has been slowing things down a little in the last two chapters and just focusing on one or two groups, as opposed to previous chapters in this arc which tried to focus on way too many parties in one chapter.

I have to apologize I only read about 2 pages when I replied. After reading this chapter last week, I really wanted to get onto this thread to read what people had to say and I just didn't have time due to university and what not, so I actually have no idea what anybody here has said already about the topic. I have gotten through the first 8 pages I would say now, and it still looks like no one was getting anywhere and every other post provided an opinion that went against the previous poster, but they all made sense. Most of the time topics as big as the ones presented in this chapter seem to span a large amount of pages. So if some kind of conclusion has been reached, I apologize for bringing it back up, and just disregard what I'm saying. Unfortunately though I just don't have the time to go over 40+ pages. But whatever Oda was trying to do with this chapter has flown right over my head anyway, so I'll just remain quiet until the next chapter.

The thing is the Sexism Brigade are not providing any theories. Just their judgment That the author or Zoro are sexist. Here how it breaks down in my opinion:
Theories are all well and good, sure. Usually they arise when there’s a question or plot point that will be answered later in the manga. Sometimes though, theories are pointless fun because there won’t actually be an answer. Zoro’s actions are not necessarily a plot hole, there may or may not be further given reasons for the way he acts, so personally (!) I don’t see much development in the way he thinks of fighting women, because I haven’t seen any previously, and I don’t think Oda is greatly worried about it (heck this chapter seems like it's supposed to be the answer to the subject), so that’s why I say the theories on Zoro’s thinking are useless right now. But hey, next chapter Oda may address this more and I’ll look like a total doofus, but for the moment, that's how I feel. So yeah, I’ll make judgements on the chapters as they come, and the judgement I make is that the recent chapter (and the “she’s a woman” from Skypeia) contradict the page you show with Zoro’s past where he doesn’t care about if Kuina's a girl. I don't need any brooding monologues, but I would have hoped for at least some hint that there's a reason Zoro's perception changed.
You should stop thinking of the "Sexism Brigade" as people who think Japanese people are all perverts and Oda's a woman hating man-pig or whatever. I'm not even angry at the chapter (Monet cut in half was crazy cool). This:

Mangarule's version is out and the debate seems to be over, more or less. Time to finally vent my thoughts on the chapter. I must say I'm kinda surprised that Yarisugi did not only manage to defeat Coribou, he was also able to scare Caribou off the island. Caribou is an idiot, but a logia is a logia, no matter how weak the element is. Unless he simply left at the first opportunity of course, which would suit his character.
Since this was the twelfth installment we might see the conclusion of the mini story soon, and my money is still on him reporting to Royal Shichibukai Buggy!The actual chapter starts with the G-5 asking why Sanji didn't help them against Monet. His answer was obvious, and unlike many here I never had an issue with that. However, him acting like the asshole of the crew was my problem, in basically every situation since the timeskip.
And this is where the G-5 come in! Just how the mermaid-overdose cured his excessive reactions towards women, the manly, mancrushing Marines seem to cure his extreme douchebaggery. Of course he still seems to hold a grudge against the children, but I will let it slide since this was exactly how he was raised by Zeff. It also perfectly explains why Crocodile was reluctant to fight Luffy at Marineford. One would think that he doesn't have any disadvantage in the New World since everyone and their mother is able to bypass his powers anyway (with the use of haki), but now we know that his weakness doesn't only rob him of his standard immunity, but he is also unable to avoid attacks manually like the above 3 users.
Anyway. Surprise surprise, Tashigi stands no chance against her opponent. At least Monet compliments her on avoiding her snowballs with Soru. And then there is again talk about underestimation.

Apart from that I found Zoro's excuse on why he stopped their fight somewhat cute. "You are taking too long". Yeah, as if that's the reason :happy:. Their interaction as a whole was quite enjoyable, but then Oda decided to slap me with the "Zoro is awesome and badass" bat. Way too hard for my taste. I mean it was obvious that Monet wasn't a match for him, but shivering in fear? To the point that she lost the ability to keep her fucking body together? Zoro is a wild animal (rawr!) who will bite when provoked? Cringeworthy.
It was just too much of everything, too much "in your face" for my liking.

He probably didn't do it before and I highly doubt it was because he was unable. He was the one who made a comment about mastering one's devil fruit. Maybe its because the concept of Haki wasn't introduced back than officially which didn't require Oda to show such technique or it's that Crocodile knew all those around him didn't know haki in Alabasta.
Whatever the reason is I am certain Crocodile will be able to avoid attacks like Aoi Kiji, Smoker, CC, and Monet have done.

One thing this chapter makes clear is that while swordsmen in One Piece can and do use haki, they also seem to have an ability all their own. Maybe it's an ingrained cultural thing that Oda doesn't need to explain but swordsmen also seem to project their bloodlust as willpower. 'Saaki' is the term (please correct me if I've mis-spelled it) and it's been shown in manga as diverse as Lone Wolf and Ranma Half.
Before he'd even learned of haki Zoro was doing Asura attacks so powerful it caused people to hallucinate. Flower Vista's attacks cause illusion of floral displays. Character's have commented before on Zoro's aura of bloodlust and that's what he used on Monet. It's not haki, or not just, but battle aura. This would seem to be a different thing from conqueror's haki as any powerful swordsman or martial artist has a degree of it Oda may differentiate the two in later chapters.
Maybe when we get back to the fight between Vergo and Smoker we'll get more of a handle on logia's vulnerability to haki as both of them have it but Vergo doesn't seem to have any unique or DF powers.

I agree completely. Especially with the bow tie and the high boots, it looked like he was wearing some lingerie outfit. I guess nobody really noticed that when he appeared with his coat on, because looking back now it's completely visible. Definitely going along with his character trait of taking things too far.

At first, I thought that thing under his furcoat was a superhero costume thingy only marine style. I never would've guessed it doesn't even reach down to his knees or doesn't cover his shoulders. Even his hat doesn't seem to fit. Every piece of clothing he has comes from different things that doesn't come together well.

BigLuffy already answered this, but yeah, that wasn't a haki vs. haki incident. It only confirmed that Luffy still has a way to go.
Akainu vs Marco and Vista was also "my haki is stronger than yours!".
And this is what I think isn't the case after this chapter. Just as Aokiji avoided Whitebeards Bisento, Akainu dodged Marco and Vista's slashes. Ice and magma aren't as elusive as smoke/snow/gas, so we naturally don't see a fancy dodge move from them. But this seems to be how they did it. At least it seems more likely to me than Marco and Vista (two absolute top dogs) not being able to even scratch Akainu. And no one can tell me that Whitebeards haki was weaker than Aokiji's. Mind we are not talking about overpowering anyone with Coc, just something "as simple" as harming someone.

I think you misunderstand me. I said I always wondered why Crocodile made such a huge fuss about keeping his weakness a secret during the war. Everyone worth his salt was able to harm him anyway (due to the presence of haki), so why bother? Back then it seemed like a poor excuse to me, something made up by Oda to justify why he didn't engage Luffy in combat. "He knows my weakness"!
But after this chapter it makes sense. It showed that a logia can keep its invulnerability to a certain degree, even when attacked with haki. This isn't an option for Crocodile when he is attacked with water, as we could see in Alabasta and during the war.
My argument is basically that he has the option to avoid attacks like Monet/Smoker/Caesar when he is up against a haki user, but not against water. Even in the New World it will be his true weakness, despite the existence of haki. And with that, his behavior during the war makes sense. The worlds elite was present, and of course you wouldn't want that everyone knows the counter to your hax fruit.

I doubt haki's all that matters, and the rest of the crew will probably show us that, Robin, Chopper and Brook will show us how DF's can make a diffrence, Franky, Nami and Usopp all have no haki and no DF and will probably have to face dozens of haki users within the series
so let's not go to haki is the be all end all yet

Haki is a tool and a means to an end but by no means an end by itself. Did I make sense? I hope I did, because my feeling is that haki might be towered by other aspects of characters. Agility, wisdom, intelligence, keeness, speed and ability to name a few. People like nami who has developed a unique fighting skill will someday (I wish with all my heart) prove that cleverness might top Haki.

I know what you mean. Prior to the start of this school year, I used to spend a lot of my free time reading through almost, if not all, of the pages in each chapter discussion. Now, I can probably count how many times I've been on here on one hand in the past 2 or so months. I remember reading CCC's post in this very discussion about how CCC doesn't really get bothered too much by what Oda does and isn't a One Piece maniac to that extent (hope I'm not confusing your words CCC). I consider myself like that, as I don't really provide any discussion-inducing posts and unlike CCC, most of what I say wouldn't be very thought-provoking. I find myself satisfied with whatever. With this chapter, I have to say that I was very confused, as I was surprised with what Oda was doing, but I didn't feel upset. So I wanted to come back onto here to see if some people can clear things up, but I saw a shitload of different points of views, so then I replied to some, and I didn't realize we had moved on.

Nope. Not confusing. That's right.
I think One Piece is a great work of literature and easily the best shonen manga conceived, but with the exception of… social issues (?) like the one in this chapter, there doesn't seem to be much worth getting too emotional about. People might hate this thread, but I find the typical ones without controversy to be a lot more boring.
That's a good point. At least these chapters are interesting and have something worth talking about.

Zoro cuts Logias without haki but with sheer "fear", now that's an improvement. And Tashgi is capable of cutting Logias with haki. She didn't lose her face IMO.
And Yarisugi (spelling? - G-5 commodore) seems to wear such a wrestling suit (does it make him hot or what!?).
Though I liked the "fight" in this chap, I have to admit that I didn't enjoy this arc so far. If there was no Doffy or Law and if PH wasn't the place of the admirals' fight, this would be the lowest arc in a long time. The last time I was so little interested in OP was during the TB-fights (Usoppe vs Perona, Sanji vs Absalom).
This is no offense against people who like this arc, its just my taste and I do respect your taste but I don't need to share it.

TBH, it's funny what you put there. The whole reason PH is a nice arc is because those things you just named. Without it it would have lost his very soul.
The way you are talking about the chapter is… not wrong. But you are making a new one in your head and then tell us, if that didnt had happened this would have sucked. It happended this way, thats why people like it.
