Oh man, they should have scratched out Naruto and Ichigo and had Oga and Baby Beel there instead

The Neptun's Army is gay. Oda's designes are getting more worse and more worse.
whoa whoa. if u dont appreciate his designs dont come here~ his designs are close to perfection in terms of being able to draw the mystical nature of merman and fishman alike.
-
in regards to kudos responce I think he means that the designs for certain "unirelivant" designs look sloppy and rushed. oda is a terific artist and probaly draws the best art in jump however I can also see kudos point in that a lot of the charactors that oda see's as unimportant get the ruched sloppy treatment the neptunes army did look ugly compared to odas other designs but thats due to the fact that they are most likly irrelevent or fodder.
it also amazes me at how oda can draw really good looking girls such as nami and robin, however he can really make ugly girls as well probaly the ugliest in jump (sanjasonia and dadan lol)
so yea its not that odas designs are getting worse he just dosnt put a lot of effort into charactors that dont really stay or are in many panels, this has gone on for the whole of one piece its just his style

He at least puts a little more effort in doing these characters than you do writing this post. It is indeed terrble. I like the nautilius shells in their uniform (if you are only talking about the ammonites), but their design isn't worse than the billions in the baroque army for instance so it isn't a new thing for him putting less effort in lesser characters. If you are also talking about the princes, I have to disagree with you, although the shark prince design isn't the most unique. The two other princes have very unique and cool designs and you can see that oda puts an effort in their design.

it's just that Oda isn't at his best anymore. way back in the beginning, there have been badass looking guys, but now it's like Eustlass kidd said…

Not really back in the begining there was not much to compare it to for previous work. Also he would have being doing his best to be noticed so to speak. As the series increased in popularity it is understandable sometimes the look of other characters not important drop in detail a little.
However when I look at the panals showing large areas full of things happening it is great to inspect the small details. How much is drawn by him or his assistants I couldn't say but there is a level of quality there most times.
-
LoL @ people claiming Oda to get lazy get a clue and fuck off seriously.
-
I wonder how long it'll take before crossovers pics featuring Iku from the Touhou series and Ryuuboshi (or that giant Oarfish carrying the princes' ship) show up.
Also, does Manboshi remind anyone of Patrick? His appearance reminds me a lot of that starfish from Spongebob Squarepants…
-
I may be wrong, but I feel like I'm seeing a level of seriousness, for lack of a better word, in Luffy that we haven't seen before. In the past he was always simply starry eyed over everything new–that cool ship the brothers came on would have had him with his chin on the deck--here he was willing to hide, fer crying out loud, to protect his crewmates and himself as well as the mermaids.
Another thing was his instant reaction to Sanji's loss of blood. He's always had a sort of youthful naïveté when it came to the dangers they faced. He always recognized them, but I don't think he took it nearly as seriously as he is now–it was part of the selfishness the crew always complained about. Now we see him cracking nary a smile from the moment the princes' ship is spotted---and he is very concerned for Sanji, and that is his sole consideration from the moment Chopper says he's in danger. Don't get me wrong--he's not completely changed, as we saw by his reaction to the dissapearance of the other crew members after they got swept away in the currents between bubbles---but I think I see a new level of maturity.
I'm also touched by his matter-of-fact recital of his debt to Jinbe. To paraphrase "After Ace died, I would have been broken if it weren't for Jinbe." Wow. That is, to me, a major level of acceptance of things.
In other news--the two page spread was awesome, as well as the shots of FI--too cool with all the shell buildings and tubes etc. The princes' ship design was very cool, and the blood in the shape of a mermaid was just too funny--just the right touch of comedy in an otherwise serious situation.
I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but I'm also sure I've rambled on enough.
-
While I am slightly irked by the simplicity of Fukaboshi's design, I really love the designs of the other two; I love goofy-looking characters like Ryuuboshi, and I think Oda did what he could with the idea of an ocean sunfish merman (I'm assuming those 'ears' on Manboshi's head are supposed to be the fins). I can forgive Fukaboshi's design for the awesome designs of the Ammo Knights, the royal gondola and Fishman Island all together.

I noticed this already the first chapters after the timeskip. I remember talking about it with my brother, about how Luffy's more 'mature' now.

Yeah, I felt like there have been signs, and had mentioned it to my kids since that first chapter too, but I couldn't put my finger on exact things that showed it like I could here. (Now, having said that, no doubt a multitude of people will come forth with examples from previous chapters, LOL!)
I recall that some folks were afraid of what sort of changes the TS and Ace's death might being to his character, but I have to say, so far I like them.
-
the ammo knights thing is pure genius
-
Perhaps im not aware of it, but why does Sanji get nosebleeds when he is around women youd think hed get a boner. Is there a japanese joke im missing?

it's a japanese joke.

go read the first few chapters of naruto lol
-
I want to think that we were just left with the first clue to how the NFP captain is; Hobi Jones
Jones, where have I heard that before? ^^
Just an idea though. -

Chopper - HE LOST TO MUCH SPERM
Usopp - QUICK WE NEED A SPERM DONNER!!!Hammond - YOU FOOLS! MERMEN DON'T DONATE SPERM CAUSE FISHER TIGER DIED CAUSE OF LACK OF SPERM! Also they don't have penises…
Anyways.. Any ideas on where the name Hodi Jones comes from?

Fisher Tiger's a fishman, fishmen are mammals and reproduce in the same way as humans. So yeah, they have penises.
The nosebleed thing I believe comes from an old wives' tale in Japan wherein aroused men would experience terrible nosebleeds (I could have this wrong, though), which is why Brook/Sanji get nosebleeds whenever anyone mentions mermaids.
Not sure about Hodi Jones… One of the scripts said it might be Hoodie Jones? I suspect Jones comes from Davy Jones or any other typical pirate name but I dunno about the first part.
-
That's why I said Mermen, not fishmen.
Seriously how would they reproduce… It's a mystery to me... Guess it would work the same way fish do it..?
-
the nosebleed is supposed to represent blood rushing to the penis when it erects.
they censor it by making it a comedic gag where the blood goes to the nose instead, while still being able to demonstrate "excitement".

Ack sorry, I misread. >_> I'm assuming it's the same way a fish would… Does that make them mammalian or piscine? o_o
-
FTR, not all fish are egg layers–There are fish who are live bearers, and the males of the species have penises. Sword fish, mollies and guppies come to mind off the top of my head... Not as familiar with salt water varieties, though

True, fish have a wide variety of birth processes, so it may vary from specie to specie of merfolk.
I'm intrigued by the idea of merfolk-fishfolk relations… No doubt we'll learn more about that soon enough. We've seen merfolk working with the fishmen (Hammond's octo-merman crony) and vice versa (the Ammo Knights appear to be fishmen), as well as Camie's association with Hatchan, etc. It'll be interesting to see if there are any divides/disputes between the two species.

Well, this is a manga written as a fictional tale, so true science doesn't always play an important role, lol, and I believe Oda answered a question about fishman procreation/reproduction in an SBS at one time–saying that they reproduced in the same manner as humans. I'm not sure how that applies to mer-folk, however the existance of Kokoro as the known mate to a human as well as Chimney, her grandaughter, points to Oda chosing the easiest possible explanation (e.g. that they are live bearers who procreate in the same manner as humans, basically)
-
Mermaids and Merman would most likely just have certain scales that provide modesty.
Although why this is a topic of importance I ponder >.<
-
Nice chapter. I definitely dug Luffy's new moves and Usopp's hilarious dialogue.
Now time for a long wait…:P

Didn't Oda say in some SBS that they reproduce like humans do?
-
Rereading the chapter, I noticed Keimi asked the quintuplets "Who's on it? Medaka-chan's gang?" when they mentioned the royal carriage
So, who's Medaka, the mermaid princess?

The quintuplets are the Medaka Mermaids.
-
Ahh, I see. So much for that theory. Thanks for clearing that up.

It's not your fault, mangastream's translation was a bit misleading.
-
I just wanna see more of those mermaids :)
-
I didn't know that there was a chapter this week! What a pleasant suprise. I thought it was on break THIS week. I wasn't ready for the break being next week. Makes sense being Christmas and whatnot.
But… do they celebrate Christmas in Japan? Anyways, time to read a new chapter!
-
this chapter is NEXT WEEKS chapter, but we lucky english-speaking readers have gotten it suuuuper early.
-
Really?! So that means an even longer wait? Or what?

Well, they aren't really penises, but two modified fins. They work in a very similar way and even do get erect when breeding though. Also the females do get pregnant, but it's only because their eggs stay inside their bodies until they hatch. I figure it's like that with merfolk just without the two "penises" and eggs part.
-
@Mono631:
But… do they celebrate Christmas in Japan?
Christmas there is celebrated by having sex as much as I know

We will read the next chapter on 19.01.11
The Japanese on 24.01.11 -
Damn, Luffy was kicking ass this chapter. Kinda stupid how they got put into that predicament though, but it was necessary for an interesting explanation of how Fisher Tiger died. Great chapter overall and an awesome color spread.
-
This chapter was good. Wonder who Hammond's boss is. It will be interesting to see how the Strawhats will save Sanji and what Jinbei's message is (which we probably won't find out until a couple of chapters).
Luffy put a beating on those Fishman Pirates!
-
I doubt Sanji will be saved. He completed his dream and found all blue and it was all pink.

did anyone else think zoro will have the same blood as sanji, and he'll make some joke about not wanting to give blood to weaker people or something….. I hope it's not just me
-
They may argue a lot, but when it comes to life and death, they are loyal to one another and the crew(arguing who was going to sacrifice themselves to Kuma on Thriller Bark, Sanji being upset that Zoro and Brook disappeared because of Kuma on SA). Zoro wouldn't deny Sanji blood if Sanji would literally die without it.

My personal theory is that merpeople don't hit sexual maturity until age thirty when their tail splits into a pair of legs

That's actually what I was thinking.
Glad I'm not the only one!

lol I know he wouldn't deny it just make joke about it since it's more of a gag situation anyways
