So happy when I heard about this. Oblivion was such a fantastic game!
Can't wait for Skyrim.

Well fuck yes, first mass effect 3 and now this, what great day. Just hoping that it's gonna be more like Morrowind than Oblivion.
It sounds interesting, hopefully they'll release more information soon. I just hope I have a job by then. Not that I won't still buy it if I don't.
Oblivion was so awful and did so well I almost feel inherently put off by the concept of another Elder Scrolls game because the first idea you think of is they're just going to sequel Oblivion and make another half-assed bad game.
If it goes the Morrowind route it should all work out though. Get things back to not sucking.
If its like Fallout 3 with swords id buy it 1st day.
I don't know what to say to this, because it's so bizarro and backwards.

This is almost similar to how I initially felt about New Vegas after playing through Fallout 3.
Oblivion was disappointing, but not terrible, I enjoyed every single second I had with it.
I'm very happy about this announcement, playing Arena now, already have Daggerfall downloaded and my Morrowind and Oblivion discs on the shelves, as well as all expansions and the spinoff games that aren't the shitty N-Gage ones.
Will do a big TES run while hyping myself for this game.
Regardless of how disappointing, or of how much it changes, I'm sure it will stay TES at heart and that I will enjoy it all the way through
I really enjoyed Oblivion. Loved it. I feel abnormal and dirty now.

did you come from an alternate universe in which the eventual existence of this game wasn't a foregone conclusion from the instant Oblivion went on sale?
Eh, i didn't like Oblivion that much. After a while it was just tedious and boring to me. I was most excited about the Mass Effect 3 and Uncharted 3 announcements.
Please tell me this is running on a new engine. Bethdesa's engine has been looking old for years now.

Good news then

Verrrrrrrrrry nice. Was dreaming of Oblivion on Cryengine 3 but any improvements are welcome. Thanks for the info.
did you come from an alternate universe in which the eventual existence of this game wasn't a foregone conclusion from the instant Oblivion went on sale?
I'm just excited that its finally been announced. TES has been my favorite game series since Daggerfall, so I'm happy to hear that a new TES is coming. I'm putting a lot of faith in this one to be more like morrowind, with more political intrigue and betrayal and Skyrim is the ideal setting for it.
In the TES universe the province of Skyrim (the viking variant of TES) has always been a playground for wars and clan rivality.
I'm so happy right now. I love Morrowind. I've never played Oblivion, everybody told me Morrwind was better. But I'm looking forward to this.
My main gripes with Oblivion was that the quest wasn't as epic and the world wasn't as diverse as Morrowind. You went from a place that had deserts, marshes, plains, tropical islands, volcanoes, icy mountains, etc and a story where you were the reincarnation of one of the tribunal of of false gods. I mean nothing in Oblivion came close to the feeling of stepping into Vivic and then seeing the floating gaol. Everything just looked nice was all forest…and cold forest...sometimes wet forest but meh...
Also having cities not in the world makes it feel less alive. I dunno there were some big steps back and Skyrim's setting probably won't fix the lack of a diverse world (inb4 lots of know and mountains) but i hope they fix the plot and the game play. I don't mind being the chosen one as long its something as cool and being the Nerevarine...
I need to play Morrowind one of these days.
Oblivion was fun as hell in spite of its obvious jankyness. Still, I hope Skyrim is more than just "more of the same" - like New Vegas was.
Also: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-12-13-how-new-is-elder-scrolls-v-skyrims-engine :<
I hope to god the NPC's are at least bearable enough to look at, I got really hated oblivion and F3 because everyone including yourself was just really ugly…
Hopefully they bring back the levitation spell.
And improving the combat itself would be nice to.
It would be awesome if you could actually see your characters weapon skill increasing.
Like struggling with a two handed sword in the beginning, and ultimately being able to use it with just one hand, effortless. Like in Gothic 2.
I cannot wait to play the GOTY edition of this game.
Not sure If I'm too exited. Oblivion was fun, but there was a bit too much recycling. It does its job better as a Sandbox game, but variety in dungeon design, environment and mechanics would be really nice. I'm also hoping the guard AI isn't completely telekinetic this time. I remember running from guards using every intersection and passage blockers I could in the sewers.. They still found me. It was almost impossible to break their line of sight.
Interesting post on the UESP forums about the true identity of the Dovahkiin.
@Gauren:
Judging from the lore and a short analysis of the Dragon Wall carving on the Elder Scrolls site, it seems clear that Dragon Born refers to Tiber Septim specifically, and not the imperials or the Septim line generally (and certainly not Tosh Raka, the ascended Dragon-Tiger King of the Ka Po' Tun).
My argument for this is as follows:
Tiber Septim goes by many names, but his main monikers are Talos, Ysmir (which means "Dragon of the North" in Nord), and the Dragon Born (just search "Talos" on UESP).
Historically, Tiber Septim was a Nordic general who served under Emperor Cuhlecain, until Cuhlecain was assassinated in 854 (2nd Era). Tiber Septim is most famous for uniting all of the provinces of Tamriel and becoming Emperor in 897, ushering in the Third Era.
The Lore article states that Tiber Septim was born under the name Talos in Atmora (the continent to the North from which the proto-Nords came to Skyrim and the rest of Tamriel) and spent his youth in Skyrim, where he learned the Tongues (a power akin to the modern day Imperial Voice power) from the Skyrim chieftans.
Septim also was the only person able to withstand the Tongues/Voice of the Greybeards, who told him that he would one day rule all Tamriel, but that he must go south to do.
Now,
5) In the TES V, when the narrator says "Dragon Born" the picture centers in on a Nord-like figure in with a beard and a shield, clearly indicating that this man is the Dovahkiin, the Dragon Born.
In Oblivion there are two statues of Tiber Septim, one in Bruma (a robed man with a short beard resting his palm in the hilt of a steel longsword), and one in the Imperial Market near Edgar's Discount spells (a man in steel armor with a short beard holding a steel longsword and a shield with the emblem of the Empire, which is also the Skyrim logo). These two statues look a lot like the stone carving of the Dovahkiin in the trailer if you look closely. They have the same facial structure and the same short beard. And the Dovahkiin is also holding what seems to be a steel longsword.
As further proof of Tiber Septim being the Dragon Born/Dovahkiin, it is said that the Nords could not look at Ysmir (Tiber Septim's Nordic name) without seeing the form of a dragon (see the Ysmir lore article). This seems to suggest that Tiber Septim has ascended to dragon form just as Tosh Raka did.
8. Just before zooming in on the Dovahkiin, the trailer focuses on a scene where it appear several men are fighting each other. The narrator at this point says, "The time after the gates of Oblivion opened, when the sons of Skyrim would spill their own blood." It seems that the time is ripe for the Dragon Born to unite the clans of Skyrim just as Tiber Septim united the provinces of Tamriel.
Finally,
9) It seems like the three large figures holding staves/halberds beneath the large dragon in the stone carving on the elder scrolls site are the Greybeards. They all have long beards and are prominent figures in the carving, drawing our attention to the dragon above them. This seems to pictorially represent the prescient/prophesizing abilities of the Greybeards. Just as they foretold of the rise of Tiber Septim and the coming of the Third Era, they now foresee the return of the Dragons and the reincarnation of Tiber Septim, the Dovahkiin. Thus, Tiber Septim is the Dovahkiin/Dragon Born/Ysmir.
End of Theory.
I would like it. Seems to follow the morrowind formula (Dovahkiin seems to be the same thing to the nord as Nerevarine was to the dunmeri).
And It would also create some room to clearly explain, once and for all ,how the fuck it was possible for Tiber Septim to achieve true godhood.
I'm also hoping the guard AI isn't completely telekinetic this time. I remember running from guards using every intersection and passage blockers I could in the sewers.. They still found me. It was almost impossible to break their line of sight.
It never really bothered me when guards were like that. What annoyed me was when those blind monks were. They were supposed to be blind, but have good hearing. However if you use a simple invisibility spell, you can run clanking past them without them giving a second thought. If my invisibility spell ever wore off, they spotted me instantly, even in situations when no other npc would. I just hated that; it felt like instead of being blind, they were deaf. Of course, I still used invisibility spells whenever I had to get past some.
Oh great a new TES!!!
Thought now I want to play Morrowind again. Were did I put this game?

Leveling.
Totally revamped, no more class selection at the start of the game, every skill you level contributes to your overall level. And each time you level you get extra health plus the ability to get either more health, magicka or stamina.
Each level also brings you perks. Cool abilities I guess like in Fallout 3.
Also, the leveling was moved from 1-25 or something like that to 1-50, but 50 is soft-capped, you just advance really slow after that.Skills.
Mysticism is gone.
18 skills, down from 21 on Oblivion, and 27 on Morrowind.
Tries to accommodate players who want to specialize in a certain profession (like mage or thief), while at the same time giving room for players who like to do plenty of everything. They want to keep a special care so that this feels good, not prone to cheating and organic.Story.
200 years after Oblivion. Set in Skyrim, a region north of the imperial city, where the Nords live.
The dragons are returning, as it was prophetized. You are gonna be trying to stop the wicked dragon god. You are a dragonborn, a dragon hunter. Your mentor is one of the last blade, voiced by some old dude from Shutter Island and Minority Report.
Also, there is a civil war, since the king is dead.
Enemies include were-yeti's, giant spider, dragons and other cool creatures.Combat.
They want to make it more dynamic and tactical. You have to assign each hand with a function I think, either magic, 2 weapons, a weapon and a shield, etc.
You can also waste stamina by sprinting, allowing you to get access to tactical positions.
Emphasis on really improving the combat this time around.
They are also putting care on how each weapon feel on your hand.Quests.
Quests are much more dynamic now. The quests are now more determined by how you build your character, individual actions and overall much more dynamic. Examples provided: If you are more of a magic user, some other mage may approach you who may not have had if you were just a melee character. Or if you killed some dude who owned a store that was gonna give you a quest, his sister would inherit the store, but she may resent you before giving you the quest. Also, if you drop a weapon in the street instead of selling it, it may just dissapear, some kid may get it and give it back to you, which would lead to a series of stuff, or some dudes may fight over who gets it.
Also, it said that the quests you are given would be modified by how you have played (I guess like scaling the quests). For example, the location of a rescue mission would be determined by which location you have visited (it will try to give you a dungeon you haven't been in) and I guess also giving you appropriate enemies to your level.Other.
Third person view has been improved
5 massive cities, more variation in caves and underground stuff.
Gameplay Elements
-Duel wielding is added
-Children are added
-Random encounter QUESTS are leveled
-No Mysticism skill (could be moved to Alteration or something -shrugs), less skills in this game than Oblivion. (This probably means they combined mercantile/speech craft)
-Enchanted is added
-Dragons to be included
-No HUD (or at least the option)
-"Dramatically improved faces" that show a much wider range of emotions
-Rain and snow collision (lol Oblivion)
-Much better looking water
-Increased view distance
-Much more things to do in towns (actually crafting weapons realistically, by heating them, forging them, etc.
-Better third person view
-Better character models
-1 PLAYER GAME ONLY
-Leveling up will be based on all skills, not just the six that you choose at the start
-No major/minor skills
-You level up faster by using one skill instead of spreading them.
-No level cap
- No dialog zooming
- More voice actors
- Dialog will now pop up when close
- Mining is in
- 5 major cities
- tons of scattered settlements, nordic ruins, caves, etc.
- dragon shouts - collectible abilities beyond weapons and magic
- a perk system just like fallout 3/new vegas where you choose a perk each time you level up
Man, I can't wait to get that issue and actually be able to read the article.
Wow thanks, Samstrike.

This sounds interesting. As does the bit about crafting weapons.
like this :
didn't like this :
-Random encounter QUESTS are leveled
doesn't even understand what this mean :
and It is just me or the sheer number of randomly generated thing in Skyrim totally scream bug to me.
I'm so excited to play this! Oblivion was awesome (even though mine glitched on some quests), but I love TES

You should first play Morrowind (preferably with mod) to see what elder-scroll game is all about.:ninja:
Alright, needed a long time to comprehend and analyze the new infos, and I have to say, I think It's okay to be very excited about this, but still remain skeptical.
Lots of promises where made for Oblivion too, remember the E3 2005 demo for the radiant AI in Oblivion? Thats why everytime Bethesda uses the word "radiant" I'm starting to cringe.
I think the decision to include perks in skyrim is a wise decision, It could add a lot to the Elder Scrolls world, maybe with special perks tailored for each race, to make them more unique. I'm also fond on the fact that they want to make the leveling more like in Fallout 3/NV, with earning XP, instead of major/minor skill.
There are some great new gameplay addition, like dual wield and professions like cooking, wood-cutting, etc which I think will really add to the world of Skyrim.
But I have to call bullshit on no Mysticism. I mean, I know this plays 200 years after Oblivion, but Mysticism is already an important element of the TES universe, there is no way that they could possibly explain how that type of magic just disappeared.
All together, I see a lot of potential for Skyrim to be better than Oblivion, but I'm also alarmed.
No problem with the story, sounds very promising, I love the setup. It looks absolutely fantastic and Skyrim isn't going to be all snow, which a lot of people feared when they heard that TES V would be in Skyrim.

In the five years since Bethesda last visited Tamriel, the studio honed its chops with the post-apocalyptic hit Fallout 3. Many of Fallout's technological refinements carry over to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim,
They're not being serious…I know they're not...
It's great they are doing away with the class system, as custom class usually overshadows it.
It's great they are doing away with the class system, as custom class usually overshadows it.
Always made my own custom-class, the others never fully had what I wanted. I enjoyed being able to name it too, just another little but greatly appreciated detail that I hope that carries over.
I like the ideas they have about the new engine but it's still something I need to see to figure what's hype and what's the real deal.
Mentioning Fallout there is silly, I know they want to remind new people that they did that game but Fallout 3 and New Vegas are just a drop in the bucket compared to TES.
I'm waiting to hear someone say "This game is just like Fallout:getlost:, except with swords and spells.",lol.
I like the ideas they have about the new engine but it's still something I need to see to figure what's hype and what's the real deal.
Pretty much this. I remember all the "show-boating" by devs of Oblivion before the release. It sounded amazing, but really underwhelming when I started delving into it. Most of the promises or features didn't seem apparent.
Well that's what 90% of video game companies do…they hype us up...then drop us on our faces. I'm probably going to get thrashed for this one, but Peter Molyneux really over hypes the Fable series.
Why would you get flak for something you said that's actually true?
The Fable fan base tends to be a bit aggressive.
What fanbase isn't ?
But Peter Molyneux's hyping sorta goes far above and beyond what other companies do when they're promoting their games.
He rather consistently gets called out for his pants-on-head-retarded claims that his next game will reinvent the wheel - and they have since the first Fable, our first brush with his brand of "marketing."

…Good point lol. I guess I should have used a less obvious example but he came to my head first.

S'cool.
That said, Bethesda does talk a damn big game.
Agreed. I read through the full article in my recent GI and it's just insane…I find it hard to believe that they can fit it all on one disk when it comes to the 360 version.
but Peter Molyneux really over hypes the Fable series.
Absolutely true. Dude has over hyped his series every game and though I enjoyed the first I feel the series has degraded due to stream-lining and hype.
Played the second, beat it and actually traded it in(which I almost never do) and never even bother with the third.
That's what worries me a little, this trend of stream-lining games like Marvel Alliance 2 and Mass Effect 2, granted I as well as many others enjoyed the changes to ME but at the same time it still felt a little gutted.
They've already cut out a few things in Skyrim that have me worried (Mysticism) but at the same time they are adding in a few good ideas, it's a worry that has to be put on the back burner until more info comes out.
Skyrim looks amazing, my GameInformer issue arrived yesterday and damn! Finally. I'll have to trudge through Elder Scrolls IV again before release just to get back in the mindset, but it looks like the menu interface overhaul and new can of paint have really done the series a huge favor based off the screens in GI. Glad the junkiest system in video games has finally gotten an upgrade.
