That was laughably bad.
Can the man not make a different character design or plot to save his life?
Also, the old guy. I originally though he was Dr. Gero, but then this guy popped up in my head.
Just read Kintoki and must admit…I kinda liked it. Nothing mindblowing though.
But what's that talk about new dragonball chapters? I thought that was just a rumour?
Wasn't really that creative or new. Just read about a young Goku about to die looking for a mate that meets Bulma.
I want Toriyama to do another story about the superheroine gone hooker.
I thought the line at the end "Afterwards the trio went on a Great Adventure" was the funniest thing about it.
Meh. There was nothing special about it and it was way too similar to Dragonball but I liked it.
Kintoki was pretty boring in my opinion. I enjoyed a few of the little things about it, but after reading Dragonball, it mostly just felt bland.

…in what way? It's pretty similar in style to his other material. I liked it.
Kintoki was pretty boring.
Not bad. Just boring.
It felt like a prologue for a Dragon Quest game.
kintoki was boring nuff said.
Toriyama should do another Nekomajin. I thought they were kind of fun.
Kintoki was pretty much the same thing he already did several times.
…in what way? It's pretty similar in style to his other material. I liked it.
So a mangaka is doomed to draw the same old shit over 20 years (in terms of story I mean)?
I didn't expect much but I wanted some new ideas.
meeeeeh. Everything here felt kinda half-assed. The main character just is bored all the time, bats people around, gets in an actual fight, and then his opponent just quits.
The best part was that the villain looked like the president from Steel Ball run.
Eh, wasn't really anything we haven't already seen from Toriyama. Was amused at the Revolver Ocelot Dr. Gero design copypasta.
Didn't expect much from Toriyama he is kind of old and all his stories are somehow the same and this OS was boring. I don't really know if a Mangala can change his design after years of drawing, but all the things Akira drew during the last years look the same and thats boring.
I don't know why Toriyama keeps drawing when he doesn't have passion in his work any more (and money isn't a problem for him, that's for sure)
It's not that his style hasn't changed over the years (it has changed a lot, in fact) but that it seems like he is trying to copy his old self.
I guess I'm the only one that liked it. The "will you marry me" angle is fun, as is the limited lifespan, and he just got right down to basics.
And you can't compare it to Dragonball, it was ONE chapter, with no real intent to do more, of course its not going to match up. It was just a one shot, even though it was pretending to be a bigger thing.
There was potential and setup there, and yes it felt very familiar, but isn't that exactly what you'd want? Shame there won't be more, because it really WILL be just a un-noteworthy one shot as a result.

Yeah you can say that BUT. . .
Bakara
That was just too fucking awesome.
Knowing that ONE chapter can be that awesome, A half assed Chapter by the Godfather of Shounen Seems Understandably Disappointing.
I liked the one shot but it was NO WHERE NEAR as Epic as Bakara was.
Read Kintoki.
Sure, it had a Dragonball vibe (the mains seemed like a Goku-Bulma vibe) and (Auromoculi being limited in number and good at fighting like Saiyans), but heck, I liked it. Not amazing, but not bad.
Good to see I'm not the only person who thought that old man looked like Dr. Gero, lol. Looked like he had clothes like the Great Saiyaman.
"will you marry me"
lol whut
"I quit"
lol wat
"The trio went on a great adventure…"
Someone needs to retire.
I would like to see Toriyama take the story further, just to see how he would handle the female golden-eye warrior. Otherwise, the story was fun but it definitely was too similar to Dragonball.
I thought it was a fun one-shot, i liked the DB vibe that came from it, the stupid jokes made me laugh… yes i know.
I enjoyed, is it the same he used to always do? Yes, but is still fun for me to read and it's good to feel the old manga vibe sometimes, his draws really marked my childhood and i felt glad to see them again.
Yeah you can say that BUT. . .

Bakara? :wassat:
I didn't mind it. It was really just a good way to kill a few minutes. It would have been better served as the opening chapter of an actual series.
@Robo:

Agreed. It just felt incomplete. Like it was a start to another SandLand.
But because it's a one-shot, it feels pretty boring.
Wait… are you people actually complaining about Toriyama using similar character designs?
....
Have you seen Dragon Quest?

Not very much of it. I just looked at a few covers. Are you saying they're really bad or really good?
They're good, but Toriyama has about 20 character designs in total, so there's a lot of similar-looking characters across his works.
i Liked it shore it may not be a masterpiece but it was fun
and i agree with Robby it's unfair to compare it to dragonball off course a 30 page one shot isn't going to be as good as a 500 chapter series with time to flesh out its characters and plot and honestly i love dragonball to death but isn't the master piece people make it out to be.
and Luphrecio yeah Bankara was better than Kintoki but even thats a bad comparison seeing as bankara was just as similar to Gimtama as Kintoki is to Dragonball
Overall I thought it wasn't bad. I wish the story had expanded a bit more on the aurumoculi and their past though. And Toriyama continues his love of naming guys after puns (Huckle, Rasp, Cran, Berry).
thats a bad comparison seeing as bankara was just as similar to Gimtama as Kintoki is to Dragonball
This.
Very fun read, i'm glad the man's sense of humour is still wonderfully intact.
Reading this makes me all the more sadder knowing this is just a one-shot
I would seriously love to see this serialized (probably more so than the recently rumored "new Dragon Ball manga")
i agree. i enjoyed it. it was funny, would have preferred a more dr. slumpish dragonball than the more sand land dragonball we get. don't get me wrong, i liked it. The art, especially at the beginning really grabbed me. Liked the little jokes, and the big guy coming along was nice. :)
Well, that was just bland as hell. I mean, the actual plot isn't anything fantastic, but I guess Toriyama does have a decent setup, which could be really interesting if executed. But as a oneshot it was pretty dull.
Oh, and "Gee, this old guy is the only one who's a match for Toki and he's wearing sunglasses. I wonder if he is an Aurumoculi."
@RobbyBevard:
I guess I'm the only one that liked it. The "will you marry me" angle is fun,
Admittedly, I did like that concept. I would very much like to now where that storyline would've gone. Of course, I'm a sucker for romance.
as is the limited lifespan
About that; a naturally limited lifespan really is no reason for a dwindling population. But whatev.
and he just got right down to basics.
To be honest, I guess I would be kinda interested to see where the story would go if it continued, but I guess we'll never know.
Takeshi Konomi's Moon Walker is out on MangaStream now.
Why the hell did Toriyama write an one-shot with nothing original about it? Right down unremarkable. If it is the beginning of a series I can understand but, it a one shot. The jokes aren't that unique, the plot is cliche as hell (in a sense that even that even fights are not intense or exciting by any mean), no special fighting ability, the race concept is pretty common in manga. I just feel empty reading it.
I don't mind the family plot line but I really hate race plot line.
Christmas is just around the corner >.>
Didn't care for Toriyama's one-shot. Like mentioned, it seemed like a prelogue to a DQ game.
I just read Moon Walker. Kinda liked it even though the characters are a bit gay. Wouldn't say the plot is magnificent but the setting is interesting. The villain is a woman. Had some good lines and fighting.
It's alright for an One shot.
Konomi always makes his male characters very beautiful or very ugly.
The clothing of the main character is really gay.
The artwork and setting in Moonwalker somehow reminded me of Final Fantasy 8.
Huh, so they did that too, eh?
Chances of them doing Usuta's and Akimoto's too?
Moonwalker was alright. I'd like to see more of it.
Kintoki was okay, nothing stellar but I did enjoy reading it.
Hope Moonwalker gets serialized. I like it.
Hmmm…Moonwalker was OK. Bankara still feels miles ahead of the others though.
After Bankara Moon Walker was the beste One Shot so far.
I'd like to read more of it, it cought my interest.
Finished reading Moonwalker. It was decent; However, Gaia reminded me of Regal Bryant from Tales of Symphonia for some reason… only with more aggression. Out of all the one shots so far, I think this and Bankara should be serialized next.
toriyama's bland, phoned-in sandland/dragon quest prologue one-shot was one of the worst, in my opinion. and geez, can that guy stop being lazy and set a manga somewhere not in a vague desert/mountainy region?
if you're not even going to try, just retire for good already.
