Just got finished watching the movie!!! It was amazing! I'm so happy that we actually got a good DBZ movie that captured the essence of dragonball somewhat :D Yayayay I'm happy…
! And vegeta was Badass! "My BULMAAAA!!"
-
Here is a video on what I thought about this movie:
-
! Did Gohan went just Super Saiyan while holding hands with the other Saiyans?
Plothole. -

Finsihed, Great Movie! liked that
! Goku actually lost
-
It is never said Gohan cannot become a Super Saiyan. Ever.
-
Yeah, more or less it is said that Son Gohan probably can go into Super Saiyan, but that it's useless, since he has this new form, better in every single way.
A nice quote I found:
"As for transforming into a Super Saiyan, no he can't (or doesn't need to). The Old Kai gave Gohan the ability to access the power from his Super Saiyan forms without wasting the energy to transform. Essentially he can power up to Super Saiyan 3 without wasting the energy to transform, or the strain of maintaining that form." -

Not everyone has had a chance or inclination to bootleg and watch the new movie yet.
ESPECIALLY use tags when talking about elements that are different from any previous DBZ movie.

@Aru:
Toriyama forgeting things about his own series? You don't say!
He said he reread the entire series before working in this movie though - which was noticeable seeing the many interviews he gave to promote the movie, where he sounded more aware of his own work and characters than usual.

Didn't stop him from having Mr. Satan being unaware of who Dende was, having Kaio's planet still existing, and stating Bulma to be roughly ten years younger than she should have been…

About that one.. does he ever ask that? I think I remember him asking during the Boo arc, but I'm not sure

He did and instead of becoming a SSJ, he got all the power unleashed in his base form (what we call his ultimate form). So, its at least implied that his new form completely replaced his SSJ forms.

There's a new movie ? :O

Saw it yesterday.
! For once, a film in awhile that is just plain fun and silly, without any kind of unnecesary dark element to drag the narrative. A lot of cameos (love the Pilaf one) and the direction in the action scenes was well executed. For any fan that just want to laugh and revive a great series for an hour, is the perfect movie. The new transformation was weird and look really out of place in the esthetic of the movie, but overall a great movie.
-
Saw about half of Battle of Gods on Youtube before the video froze (when I refreshed it, it said that the user had removed the video). Pilaf and company were hilarious, as was Mr. Buu (the video cut off as he was eating all of the pudding). Didn't really get far enough to comment on the action, but from what I saw, Bills is ridiculously powerful, though I like that he's still a fairly quirky and funny character as opposed to being dead serious.
-
Did the villain have three main minions?
-
@Cyan:
Did the villain have three main minions?
! From what I've heard, he has no real minions, unless you count whiss, but I don't think Whiss actually fights and since he's also supposed to be stronger than Beers I don't think he can really count
-
! Shida Naotoshi!
!! From what I've heard, he has no real minions, unless you count whiss, but I don't think Whiss actually fights and since he's also supposed to be stronger than Beers I don't think he can really count
! Beers does not have henchmen. Whis is his simply his attendant and he merely spends the entire time eating or admonishing Beers.
-
About that one.. does he ever ask that? I think I remember him asking during the Boo arc, but I'm not sure
Dende says he's Earth's god, but Satan doesn't believe him. So when Satan asks "is he really God?" in this movie, one could say he's still refusing to buy it. Satan is a man of denial after all.
@Vegard:
having Kaio's planet still existing, and stating Bulma to be roughly ten years younger than she should have been…
IIRC, the Kaio planet thing was actually addressed in one interview, and they say it was simply rebuild. Sure it doesn't explain why it's still small due to something Bills did in the past, before it was destroyed.
Bulma should be about 5 years older than she said, but..so? She was hiding her age earlier, it's not a stretch to believe she lied.
! From what I've heard, he has no real minions, unless you count whiss, but I don't think Whiss actually fights and since he's also supposed to be stronger than Beers I don't think he can really count
! Whiss isn't his minion, he's actually his teacher.
! And he's stronger than Bills, although other than putting him to sleep in the end he doesn't do much. -
Bulma should be about 5 years older than she said, but..so? She was hiding her age earlier, it's not a stretch to believe she lied.
See, that could be a valid interpretation… if Mai, the character who obviously had no reason to claim to be a few years younger than she is considering how she looks like a 10-year-old, also claimed to be 41, aka 3 years older than Bulma supposedly is… and you know, I can buy that. I can buy that at the time Bulma was 38, Mai would be 41. It's just that they would have been at those ages, oh, sometime in between the Cell- and Boo-arcs if I'm not mistaken? Certainly not five years after the defeat of Majin Boo.

Just finished the movie.
! I liked how the appearance of Super Saiyan God (and Bills and Whis as well), and the end of the movie, tied into concepts that had been around since the series started - that one's power shouldn't be judged based on appearances alone (see Kid Goku, Kid Gohan, Ultimate Gohan, Freeza's final form, Kid Buu, etc.), and the message that there's always someone stronger out there, meaning that there's always a way to improve yourself to reach that level. The credits were a huge nostalgia trip, cycling through most of the series in manga form and singling out major panels, and the whole experience left me grinning widely and feeling like a kid again. (which is pretty rare - only other movie that did that is Toy Story 3)
! Don't know if Bills' and Whis' comments at the end were meant to hint at future movies (what with there being eleven other universes and Bills going to sleep for three years, respectively), or if they were just throw-away comments, but either way, it's nice to see the setting of DBZ expanded on further. If it's the former, I'm guessing there's going to be some kind of Super Grand Kaioshin (probably with a much better name than that) introduced at some point who's in charge of all of the universes (since the Grand Kaioshin seemed to be in charge of the universe, and DBZ's cosmology seems to be pyramid-shaped).
! Still, whether or not this results in any sort of future Dragon Ball projects, it was still a great experience, and I can honestly say that I enjoyed every minute of it. -
The God hierarchy:
Kaiou (North, South, East, West)
Dai-KaiouKaioushin (North, South, East, West)
Dai-KaioushinHakaishin
There are also Makaiou, evil counterparts to the Kaiou. Future films could eventually play on that. Since Beers obviously isn't going to attempt to blow up Earth on a whim again I think it's safe to say we could potentially see Beers fighting alongside Gokuu and friends to fight a true evil force.
-
! It has Gotenks. Gotenks his scenes are funny.

Welp, I just saw it. Way better than I thought it would be. It really hypes me up for more content, but I really don't wanna be disappointed in the regard.
-
I just saw it. Aaaanndd.. Well… My first time reading Dragon Ball was.... prolly like 20 years ago. So seeing all those characters together again brings back a lot of memories, and its actually the only redeeming quality of the movie. Bills (or was it Beers??), was an interesting character, and he was fun to watch as well.
But I stopped enjoying the movie whenever a fight scene comes up (not because of the animation, mind you. The animation was incredible). It was more due to some really fundamental flaws embedded in Dragon Ball since Z.
! 1. Toriyama has an absurd power levels that the whole thing just feels mediocre. Goku fights with SSJ3 and he punched a hole in Kaio's planet…. Shouldn't the planet be destroyed at the first moment of clash? Punching a hole feels so underwhelming, to say the least.
! 2. While Toriyama's character designs are unique, his character's powers are not. It all ends up with air fights (punching, kicking, blocking, etc), and Ki battles. Whenever there is a new character, it comes down to "How strong is he?", not "What power does he have?"
! 3. Goku lost that easily? With only 2 hits?? It immediately negates the relevance of characters like Vegeta, Gohan, & Gotenks. It made their fight scene with Bills boring, u know right from the start they wouldn't even be able to put a scratch on him.
! 4. Super Saiyan God, achieved by 6 Saiyans (good-natured Saiyans) holding hands.... Yeah.
! 5. It honestly feels like Toriyama himself had forgotten who Vegeta was. I know Vegeta had to abandon his pride in the face of Bills, but surely not like this. He was practically a comic relief, he feels out-of-character.Well, actually, its just points no. 1 & 2 that was the "fundamental flaws". The rest was movie specific.
-
! The movie exceeded my expectations, I enjoyed it throughly, and I liked Bills ( and Wiss ) way more than I thought I would after seeing the movie announced. The ending sequence was a nice touch, very nostalgic :)
! And yeah, this thing with all the other universes may result in more movies. -

! When Script Writer Watanabe Yuusuke originally created 'Birisu' he was naming the character after 'virus'. Toriyama mistook this for a pun on 'beer' ('biiru' in Japanese), so he named Uisu 'Whis' for whiskey.
! Toriyama admits to running out of ideas for techniques years ago. It can't be helped.
! Regarding Vegeta, I don't think he was particularly out of character. In fact, Vegeta, Blooma, and Beers steal the movie. Here Vegeta is essentially the de facto main character, trying to keep his home and family from being blown up by a god with a notoriously bad temper. Scene after scene he has to swallow his pride. If it were any other person he would just kill them and be done with it, but here he is clearly outclassed. When Beers slaps Blooma Vegeta finally has something to latch on to, an excuse to abandon reason and settle things as he normally would: with violence. Here was this petulant, ill-tempered bastard screwing with his woman. The great Vegeta-sama…insulted! If this wasn't the first new film in seventeen years I'd have said that Vegeta really should have been the one to become God. I'm hoping that the Vegeta sub-plot from this movie is built upon in the next film as the main plot. Vegeta is pretty much the only character who can still be developed or salvaged at this point. Kami to Kami did a good job of re-establishing Son Gokuu's character, but Gokuu has developed as much as he can at this point. -

! I understand all of that, I guess what I'm trying to say is that it could've been done better. Swallowing his pride doesn't necessarily means turning into a court jester.
-

! Him was complaining about becoming as lax as he was in the Buu Saga, besides that, he was trying not to get everyone else killed.
! it makes sense to me, though… it was still odd to watch, I'll admit. -
! Great movie. Now this is how exactly how DBZ is done right. None of that ridiculously serious shit. Stakes still high, yet light-hearted and totally fun like DB.
I particularily loved the character development for Vegeta. It kind of sucked to be a Vegeta fan. He was my favorite during the first two arcs, but after Namek (and especially in the movies oh god. But thankfully those don't count) he's a useless crybaby. In fact, he even made Cell go perfect. He's never not great in this one though. I even liked the "swallowing his pride" part. He was in high need of that lol. I also loved how the movie gave the impression that he a chance to finally catch up to Goku, with his temporary surpassment and the possibility of going god mode too. When Bills said Goku and Vegeta would become formidable enemies, my inner nerd cheered. He was the highlight of the movie for me, definitely. I feel he grew as a character. More so than in the entirety of the series till now.
Bills was also great of course. Liked Whis too. This weird effeminate guy is the strongest in the universe lol. Pilaf & Co's appearance was a pleasant surprise too, though it dragged a bit. Oh and the humor. I absolutely died at the Buu + pudding part. On another note, did anyone else think the SSGod hair color looked really off?
Anyway, this movie is just pure fun. Of course it's still no high art, but it sure is fun. Totally exceeded my mild expectations, considering it's only DBZ. I really hope this isn't the last one.
! Must really suck to be a Picollo fan though lol. Guy had like 3 lines. -
! I'd give it a 6/10. I was disappointed to be honest.
! The action was great, especially Vegeta's angry power-up moment and Goku and Bils' final battle. There was some good comedy as well. I liked how the Z-Fighters were handled, Piccolo in particular as he gave off that wise mentor vibe from the Buu Saga. I also like the brief but noticeable importance of Bulma and Chi-Chi (Goku signaled her out when he thought of how he had to win) in their husbands lives.
! But while I got a few chuckles out of the Pilaf gang, they didn't offer anything of importance to the movie and just took away time that could have been used on Bils, Whis, or the Super Saiyan God legend. I also thought it was kinda creepy how Mai was actually seemingly getting with Trunks at the end.
! Whis was a fun character. Bils…not so much. He was badass and it was kinda cool how afraid of him everyone was, but at his core he's an immature child. I like quirks and this movie couldn't be real dark and what-not considering this is the first in 17 years. But, he was just stupid. Destroy the planet over pudding? What the hell?! The real annoying thing is how the Z-Fighters befriend him and treat him with respect. He doesn't frigging deserve it, he's a petty jerk!
! These two are small but still valid IMO: The movie would have flowed better if it started with the Bils awakening scene, the Kai conversation as the opener just felt odd. Also, while they love fighting and make up for it later, I was put off by Goku and Vegeta not being at the party. Bulma is their oldest friend and wife respectively. Surely, they could give the training a quick break just to celebrate with her. Vegeta in-particular is odd as his development ended with him becoming a family man. What family man skips his wife's birthday? -
Just watched it. Hugely disappointed as well.
! Among my major complaints would be the complete lack of artistry (Hell, the first DBZ movie looked better than this crap), Gokuh's extremely obnoxious personality and pretty much every other character being completely off as well, hugely lame and improbable powerup, and the lack of any real story. Even the fight scenes which are supposedly DBZ's greatest strength were really lacking.
! If this is what new material will bring us, I'd rather Dragonball just be left alone. My favorite part of the movie was probably flipping through the manga in the credits which really just made the entire movie seem even worse by comparison.
! The single redeeming feature of this mess: I really, really, really like Beers. A very Toriyama character and potentially a great antagonist in a movie that didn't suck ass. -
There's enough material for tons of films! I'm really hoping they continue Dragon Ball in some form or another, I know they really shouldn't though. The series is already long enough, I just love the cast of characters so damn much.

If they'd expand on other characters who aren't saiyan I'd be so up for it to, have piccolo go to hell and fuse with his father and become part of the ongoing struggle for top strength protagonist again (I liked it when it was gohan, goku, vegeta and piccolo constantly trying to out do each other), set up side enemies for the earthlings to fight… and actually beat, have characters with no physical strength find some way to be useful to the plot again other than just being cheerleaders
but unfortunately it doesn't seem like that's what these people have on there mind, just more goku and vegeta being awesome and no one else
-

It's a given we'll be seeing more, probably movies. The box office was highly successful (never mind the international releases), and the dvd/blu-ray is selling really well too.
-
have piccolo go to hell and fuse with his father
That's impossible, Piccolo Jr is the reincarnation of Piccolo Daimao. He can't fuse with his father because he is his father. They share the same soul. It would be like Uub fusing with Kid Buu (they can't, they are the same person, the same soul).
At most he could fuse with the Piccolo of a another timeline or something like that.
-
So it's prolly old news at this point and I guess some people didn't like it, but I fucking adored how fun Battle of the Gods was
Where was this movie ten years ago
I'd rank it pretty high in general as far as DB media goes. I was just dying giggling the entire birthday party and really liked the Pilaf gang stuff.
! And Gohan playing Saiyaman with them, ending with Videl getting shot with a bullet, was maybe my second favorite scene next to Pilaf blushing thinking Trunks was asking him to be his girlfriend.
it was just immensely satisfying fanservice basically??
Oh yeah and Beers was the best. Best Dragonball antagonist. He and Whis were delightful
-
I have yet to see the movie, but i just read the new SD chapter about beers/whiz. Was just curious if that is loosely following the premise or if it's what happened before?

New? The SD version of Battle of Gods was in Saikyō Jump seven months ago.
It covers the plot of the movie (with a few things left out and a couple of extra gags, just like the rest of SD) up until Beerus, God of Destruction, shows up at the party.
-
Thanks for the info, I literally had just seen in on mangastream so I assumed it was fairly recent. I don't actually know what chapter is SD on and haven't looked into it since well, i don't speak/read japanese.

Well, we just debuted this section over on Kanzenshuu, so never fear. (The reason two chapter summaries are missing is because I neglected to pick those two issues up. Will have to go back and add them when volume 2 comes out.)

Posted in the WSJ TOC thread, so I might as well bump this thread and post it here.
@Smiley:I can't seem to find the dragon ball thread so I'll post here.
A Toriyama interview:http://www.kanzenshuu.com/translations/episode-bardock-akira-toriyama-super-qa/
Thanks to his pride Vegeta become better family man than Goku.:ninja:And Gokuu's mom is named Gine.
-
A movie about Vegeta? How about a movie about the adventures of Krillin?
Joking aside, I'd watch it.
Also kinda funny that the Ginyu force and the Freeza family are mutant aliens
-
I always thought it'll be much later (not that I'm complaining). Spring season is gonna be good
-
Well we know they've dumped that last guy doing the music, do we think they'll go back to making another new score for the show?

I'd expect so.
Maybe they'll use some tracks from Battle of Gods, as they usually do. -
A new composer was brought on for these upcoming episodes.
