General Sonic the Hedgehog Thread (Now With Movie 3 & Knuckles)
-
-
Its like trying to claim the new Star Trek movies didn't erase everything.
"No, its just a new alternate reality. It doesn't get rid of any of the old stuff, so it doesn't count."
Technically correct, but it does eliminate all the old continuity, worldbuilding, history… and as the current iteration is what they plan to push for the near future, there won't be any bits of the old anytime soon. Just because a reboot doesn't outright destroy the old franchise, it DOES destroy any future potential of using the old stuff anytime soon.

That's kinda hard to say due to Sonic Boom being handled by a different studio altogether than the general Sonic team right? I figured this was its own stand alone sort of thing to work alongside the new cartoon.
PS: To be fair, Episode 3 WAS fairly decent. In fact, I dare say I actually did find it "funny".
-
The reviews are ripping this game a new one. As expected. They say never judge a book by it's cover… but Sonic games always seem to break that analogy. 'Cause we all judge the sh*t out of them before they come out.... and 90% of the time we're right. So yeah... just die, Sonic. It's far too late to seem redemption now, you've screwed up too many times.
-
There seems to be a bit of hyperbole with this one. Some have claimed it's even worse than '06.
-

No it's not. It just needs one really good game that does everything right and then they can base future games off of that.
The problem is Sonic games are pushed out for every system imaginable on a regular basis. Instead of spending 2 or 3 years on just one single title for one platform (as most Nintendo franchise games do) Sonic games are consistently pushed out the door every year regardless of if they're ready or not, so they never really fix the physics or level designs… and as a result of that schedule they have multiple teams so there isn't even a chance to learn from past mistakes... they just keep making the same ones over and over again.
Other franchises are able to make characters move fast in a fully 3D world and do platforming and attacking and they work fine... (like say, Okami for instance) the SOnic game's main problem is at this point, they just design long tunnels that you can run down really fast by hitting speed boosts which looks flashy and then don't go any further... and they've settled on that thinking that going 200 mph is the only thing that matters in a Sonic game, when its not. They also consistently throw in some awful gimmick or another that eats into development time and just makes things worse.
They had a couple decent games in a row, and often when they deign to try a 2D game or heavy 2D sections its okay... but they refuse to stop and rebuild from the ground up for 3 years to make a good game again... and so it never gets any better.

I haven't felt hatred for the concept of reboots until Mortal Kombat 2011 happened. It was a good game, but the storyline reset just…
"Wow. Kitana is such a shit character! She doesn't do anything but show her thirst for Liu Kang."
And I just sit in the corner and cry.
-
I'm getting happy with every new awful Sonic game… Because I have this dream if Sonic goes shit enough, SEGA will finally let Nintendo take the character.
If Nintendo could somehow get Sonic and Mega Man, they'd have pretty much every notable console mascot and character in existence... well, maybe without Crash and Spyro.

Some really weird and hilarious concept art for Sonic and Eggman:

Said the same bullshit about Unleashed.

Hmmm so Johnny Cage wasn't the only one who needed some Aquafina.

It'd be funny if they did especially since they scrapped certain things from 06 like Uncanny Valley Eggman.
-

Unleashed is no where near as bad as 06'. 06' is nearly unplayable. Sonic Boom has a lot of problems, but the problems are far less visible.

Johnny hoarded all the Aquafina. There isn't enough Aquafina to quench the thirst of the Cage.

The style for Sonic is kind of cute. Eggman, not so much.

Hate blinds .

Is Sonic wearing pants in one of those concept art pictures?

If a sonic game that comes out now can't even reach the quality of a slightly above average ps2 platformer, and not even coming close to the ratchet and clank and jak and daxter series on ps2(wich overall even look better graphically), then it's really a problem, lol. Still don't get why so many are so into this franchise still.
-
As a huge Sonic fan, this really upsets me, the last two games (Lost World and Boom) have really not been good, but Lost World wasn't such a huge disappointment as Boom. The should make another Generation type game, or a Sonic Adventure.

It's funny you say that and then mention Ratchet & Clank, and Jak & Daxter.
Sonic Adventure.
They're a bit overdue on that front but apparently that's how bad they fucked up on 06.
-

I don't get what you mean.^^

I don't get what you mean.^^
Both franchises are relics of the PS2 and haven't really been all that relevant since then.
Hell of those two series only one actually had a couple of games on the last console generation.
-
I used to think that they should make a Sonic Adventure like game. Then I went back and played them. Boy did those not age well. At least I still had some fun when I played Sonic Advance.
-
Boom is very similar to those two.
I'm sorry, but it's nowhere near the quality of those two franchises.^^

Similar in style. Not in quality.

Well I never said they were different in terms of style.

I think Sonic Adventure's Sonic levels is a good base to use for future games, as long as they refine it (like get rid of the glitches and make it so you're not only pressing forward the whole time through).
Not counting Sonic 06, I'm hoping Sonic Team makes a Sonic Adventure 3, refining the Sonic levels. I wouldn't mind if Tails and Knuckles are playable but only if they follow the Sonic levels close enough with their own little twist (emphasis on ""little twist"", don't make them completely different) kinda like how they were in the Genesis games. I think that'd be for the best.
I don't mind if the story is like the Sonic Adventure games. They weren't great, but they weren't horrible either. Just don't make them as convoluted as Sonic 06's…. THAT STORY WAS HORRIBLE and was trying too hard.
But, yeah, just my two cents. The Adventure games would be good if they were refined and had stuff like Biggs and Amy's levels taken out.

I seriously want to know when Sega will give up and just accept that Sonic is dead….
-
I seriously want to know when Sega will give up and just accept that Sonic is dead….
When they go the way of SNK.
-
Or just let nintendo do a really good sonic platformer. If they even want to spend time on a full fledged sonic game.^^
-
I still want Capcom to give The Blue Bomber to Nintendo…
-
I seriously want to know when Sega will give up and just accept that Sonic is dead and replace him with a full fledged Eggman game where he blows things up with missiles
yup, fixed that for you. :ninja:
-
-
is it 2003 again
-
Too soon, man. Too soon.
Would Acclaim had been a more reasonable substitute?
yup, fixed that for you.
Which reminds me with Nintendo making Captain Toad Treasure Tracker a Sonic made Nintendo game can focus on Knuckles and Rogue hunting for treasure with every level being either naseua inducing like Meteor Herd or rage inducing like Security Hall.
-
If they release a sonic adventure 3 i would like it if they kept the multiple stories, maybe added in 2 more teams for more playable characters. Then have the tails/eggman stages be relatively the same as they were in 2, but give the platform focused levels that sonic had to knuckles/rouge. Then give sonic/shadow the newer type of gameplay that we find in sonic colours/generations with the 3d-2d aspect. They will be different enough stages but none will be too different that they become frustrating
-
and dumb as a post.
One cutscene Knuckles is all "No time like the present" then immediately goes "wait…there are presents?"
Correction: Sonic says the former then Knuckles says the latter.
….Boom Knux is still kinda dumb.
-
See the intro for the greatness of Sonic Boom -
That Game Grumps video raises a good question:
Is pokecapn going to do a Let's Play of Sonic Boom?
-
Someone already did Lost World and SA has a 3-month grace period for new games to LP.
-
A couple more episodes in the series, and they are really committing to Knuckles being a moron.
Sticks and her general paranoia is growing on me
! "Why is the music controlling us?"

I guess they're fucking with Sticks subliminally.

@Cyan:

I think you're referring to Runbutton. They finished up their Lost World LP and posted an episode of Sonic Boom about a week ago on their youtube channel. Not sure if they posted it on SA due to the 3-month rule.
I like gamegrumps, but I really prefer to watch Sonic LPs done by actual Sonic fans (like Runbutton and Pokecapn). There's an entertaining amount of pain, betrayal and sadness in those LPs that you don't get from LPers who aren't invested in the series.

Sonic Boom (wii u) review:
http://metro.co.uk/2014/11/25/sonic-boom-rise-of-lyric-review-fall-of-a-hedgehog-4961816/
Some choice quotes
This year’s new Sonic the Hedgehog is so bad it may actually be the worst of all time, and is definitely the worst game of 2014.
The platforming sections are so impossibly incompetent it’s as if the last 20 years of game design never happened, with a camera of such breathtaking ineptitude it makes Bubsy 3D look like Super Mario 64. How something so broken and unfit for purpose can still exist in this day and age we don’t know but it’s matched by controls that are equally clumsy and unreliable.
A terrible camera, awful controls, unspeakably dull combat, insipid level design, ugly character art, broken graphics, serious bugs, and the terrible feeling that Sega hates both you and Sonic.
1/10

I think I just have to admit that Sonic the Hedgehog is just a giant exercise in schadenfreude for me.
-
I watched a couple of episodes of Sonic Boom today and I quite like how they've written the characters. It's probably the most I've enjoyed Sonic and his gang, I'm really liking Sticks too. The animation is pretty ugly though.

Unless it has implied bestiality nothing can ever take 06's place
-
-
I hate to admit it but the British are better at the "angry nerd critic" thing.
They all sound like angry poets. -
Breaking an already broken game.
Nice work, guys! Just the kind of laugh i needed before i sleep tonight. -
I don't know how I feel about Sonic Boom, the cartoon. I mean, its sorta funny? I guess. It's trying really hard to be, at least. But the godawful animation just kills all of the comedic timing.
But as much as I want to hate "dumb Knuckles", he tends to crack me up the most, next to Eggman.
