Well he didn't rape Nami.. if he had I'm sure he'd win the title, because I was soooo close to saying "… oh shit" when he was holding her against the wall.
But then Oda reminded me this was a kids manga.

Just throwing this out here, but the part of the translation that has the invisible guy saying "be OUR bride" is potentially wrong. "Oira" is a country-bumpkin version (dialect) of saying "I" (as in "I am") in Japanese.
This doesn't mean that it couldn't possibly be meant to be in the plural (since the "ra" in "oira" could potentially be a pluralizing kanji. But "oira" is written out completely in hiragana so there's no clue there).
I just love it how Nami is so shameless. If only Paulie could see her now…
I wish I could see Nami now…
This chapter was a really funny chapter. After reading the full script its just abunch of jokes piled on top of another. Its good that they added that or else I'd probably be scared out of my mind.
As for the "villain" in this arc, its most likely Dr. Hogback, but iono his speech seemed sincere when he said it so i'll just wait to be "surprised" in this arc.
Following along with some interesting theories that boiga, Rockschmock and Jeltz posed earlier in this thread :
Signs may point to the undead Cheshire cat, but it doesn't seem strong enough or tall enough to be Nami's assailant, and we haven't heard it speak yet. And since I like the cat's goofy smile, I'm not inclined to believe it is evil – just a bit "mad" ( not angry-mad, but crazy-mad as in "we're all mad here", the Cheshire Cat's famous line from "Alice")
So I'm gonna let the undead Cheshire Cat off the hook this time. Instead, I point an accusing finger at ...
... man-lion from the previous chapter!
Why?
He has a human face, so he seems quite capable of growling like a beast as well as whispering obscenities like a pervert. We've already seen that he's capable of suddenly disappearing (as page 5 and 6 of chapter 445 show). And he's tall enough (standing on hind legs and using other two legs as arms) to have licked Robin's face, as well as strong enough to pin Nami to the wall. A kick in the crotch from Nami would be about the right height on that guy's privates too, and furthermore, her attacker said "we" -- which either means there's a pack of these invisible lion-hybrid guys [now wouldn't THAT be a fun challenge for the Firepower to stumble across in the ditch they've wandered into!] or else there's only one, and he's using the "royal 'we' '" when he talks because – well, because he's a lion, king of the beasts! But I think the thing that convinces me most is the somewhat lecherous way he stares at Nami when they first see each other. As if he's thinking to himself "ah! Here's one that won't resist me as much as the other one did..." (and of course the number "69" on his rump is highly suggestive, too).
http://groups.msn.com/onepiecemangav-2/onepiecech445.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=10839
The only problems with this theory are the same as with previous theories about the Cheshire cat, wolfmen, etc : how can the lion fly, how can he be in two places at once, etc.
As always, we'll have to wait and see.
I was looking back at the Nami assault scene, and have come to the conclusion that the invisible guy used both of his own hands to trap Nami's arms. My proof for this is in page 17 where (after having her mouth covered at the bottom of page 16) Nami is shown using her (freed!) left hand to push back at the invisible guy. This means that the invisible guy had to have let go of one of Nami's arms to cover her mouth.
For any who thought that the invisible guy used his lips to cover Nami's mouth, remember, on page 16 the guy kept on talking AFTER Nami's mouth was covered.
Thanks for the chapter.
Can definitely see the Rocky Horror influence on Oda… Hogback resembles a fat mixture of Drac and Dr. Frank N. Furter.
Everybody here is already talking about fights for this arc. I really think this arc is just Oda's equivalent of filler, kind of like the Davey Back Arc or Jaya. It's a little arc to slow things down a bit and be all cute and funny before we get into another massive arc with Mermaid Island. If Mermaid is going to be massive like Water 7, I think it's another good indication that Jimbei may finally show up there.
It definately seems like the invisible guy is the most evil character introduced so far.
nah i belive that honor goes to the sick bastard who is creating those Zombies, invisible men and other generaly creepy things just cause he seems to find it intresting toying with life and death i.e that Creepy Dr.Robotnic look alike Hogback.
anyhow im loving this arc so far the arts simply breathtaking and the horror theme works great with Odas far out designs Dr.Hogback in particular looks awesome not at all what i would have expected yet the kinda weird looking character only Oda could design totaly works for me.
ps Luffy wanting to eat Kerberos=teh win xD

i don't think this will be like a filler. signs point to Brook becomming a strawhat. also a genius doctor is in this arc. i wouldn't view it like the davy back fight or jaya arcs.
p.s. more naked nami please

What are the "signs" that Brook is going to become a Straw Hat?
We already know that the Straw Hats are on their way to Mermaid Island. This little "ghost" adventure is just a detour along the way. Oda finally feels like doing a "ghost pirate" thing. The whole set-up screams fun but filler.
I don't think it's possible for the cat to be the invisible man. The cat is so short and the invisible man is obviously tall enough to grab hold of Nami's hand and for him to be kicked in the right spot and run off, and that cat isn't tall at all.
Let's just watch the conclusions and not to make bizzare predictions yet, shall we?
@Ky0shin:
Hey All, this is my first post within these forums.
I read the most recent chap and noticed something, although it may be nothing. During the part where brooke's name is mentioned to Dr. Hogback this frame is shown with what looks to be a pirate insignia.http://img464.imageshack.us/img464/4035/humanbrookeja5.th.jpg
The person in the portrait, seems eeriely similar to brooke in my opinion, the hair is long and could definately turn into an afro after being dead a year, the shirt seems to have the same ruffle in the front as brooke as well. The hat is different however, but it could be something worth noticing.
Dr. Hogback admitted his desire to study ressurection or reviving the dead so wouldn't Brooke be the best specimin…or maybe his shadow was all he could get hehe. All speculation, let me know your thoughts.
For comparison here's brooke again,

The picture you think is Brooke has stitches across his face, like Crocodile did
I am not suggesting that it is Crocodile, just telling you what it looked like
So if it is Brooke that means he knew Hogback BEFORE he died, so maybe Hogback gave Brooke his fruit and attacked his ship, killed him andused this all to experiment with life and death. After all, there has to be more to Brooke's background than what he told us.
I don't know if anyone else has noticed it, but doesn't Cindry have a spiderweb tatoo on her leg? Could their be a conection between her and whatever webbed up the ships? Mabye she's a bride?
@Luffies:

Nice catch. She probably has some connection for those webs even if she didn't do it herself.
There's probably going to be at least one fight here. Or at least have somebody with the Devil Fruit model Bat here. A vampire is what is needed.
Hmmm, the invisable man seemed to be the same one on the ship. Seems he attacked Nami for knowing too much (though how couldnt they tell that the place was clearly odd)
Also Cindry could of been rejected by Brook. Though just a theory.
But its obvoius that Brooks gonna play a big role in the Arc. Infact I'd find it hard to think this Arc wont Have brook having a Flash back. And when theres a a character flash back theirs a new Straw hat.
(Infact the only time there was a flash back with out a member joining was the Sky arc, which was for story reasons.)
Cindry was probably rejected by the invisible man.

boiga also meantioned the possibility of the cat having a devils fruit.
What if the Invisible man isn't an invisible man at all just a Shadow currently missing his body
and a quick question what was Hogback licking off the table?
and a quick question what was Hogback licking off the table?
PUDDING!
because plates are bad
What if the Invisible man isn't an invisible man at all just a Shadow currently missing his body
I think it was Bad-Beat that suggested the invisible man IS Brook's shadow…
it's an interesting theory, at least.

As it was plainly said in the chapter, pudding :P

So it has to be a 20 volume arc for a character to join?
Man Im so pumped for this arc! So many damn mysteries and interesting characters. Oda sure made some freaky creations. Doctor Hogback is one messed up looking dude.
At dinty's theory:
I like it. When I first saw that lion/guy though I thought he was fricking creepy.
OOOO just too excited for the next chapter, this arc kicks ass! Robin, Franky and Luffy's responses were the best.
@Cap'n:
So it has to be a 20 volume arc for a character to join?
No, not at all. But I just think this Arc will be really short and Brook won't join. It seems like filler akin to the Davey Back Fight. Oda can have some fun with his characters (and show them interacting more with Franky) before moving into the next very serious arc.
well another theory… what if dr hogback is actually the invisible man???
What is it with people all of a sudden not wanting Brooke to join at all?!
well another theory… what if dr hogback is actually the invisible man???
Then he needs the stitches removed from…certain places.
I am absolutely certain now that Dr. Hogback is the villain in this arc. What I'm not certain of is: who made whom the vampire? Did Hogback make Hildon into a vampire or was it the other way around? Yeesh, looking at those teeth makes me shudder.
And when theres a a character flash back theirs a new Straw hat.
(Infact the only time there was a flash back with out a member joining was the Sky arc, which was for story reasons.)
Kuro arc too.
Hogback manages to take back everything Califa did for fishnets. :D
I don't understand why he's patched together… he can't do his research on himself for obvious reasons.
@GunMetal::
What are the "signs" that Brook is going to become a Straw Hat?
Well, first and foremost, the fact that Luffy asked him to join as their musician, a position he's been after since the beginning, and he actually accepted the invitation, but then said he couldn't because of his shadow stolen. Luffy is now out to get his shadow back for his "nakama", as he said with his own words.
Of course it's possible that even after Brook gets his shadow back, he'll decide that he won't go with Luffy, but that's more than enough of a "sign" for you, since typically in this type of situation, where Luffy really is set on having a person join and goes out to remove whatever barrier in his way to get them on the ship, then they do join.
the other thing about Hogback that keeps me looking is that his major scar is in quite the critical place of his body.
Think of it: If Hogback is the villain and this island is full of monsters, why would Brooke want to stay on it any further after claiming his shadow? Brooke made it sure that he was lonely and wanted to leave this place when he was on the SH's ship.
Yeah, but is it that simple and predictable? There's obviously something else going on there.
Btw, i like the "invisible man is Brooke's shadow" theory.
the other thing about Hogback that keeps me looking is that his major scar is in quite the critical place of his body.
Hmm, maybe the REAL Dr. Hogback is dead…or maybe Dr. Hogback's brain is all that is left. ;)
You can sure come up with a lot of cliche theories with horror stuff....
Geez, why are people looking for villians already?! Just give the arc some time to develop will ya?
That is development. Aint no fun without a good brawl. Am I right or am I right?
Cloud rape fanservice kickery!
I think it was Bad-Beat that suggested the invisible man IS Brook's shadow…
it's an interesting theory, at least.
Sounds plausible. I like it.
But how would his shadow be able to talk?
Maybe whoever steals them, gives them a life of their own.
"And as we wind on down the road, our shadow's taller than our soul…"
See that comic with Brooke's new position.
Maybe whoever steals them, gives them a life of their own.
Perhaps one of Dr. Hogback's experiments?
Cloud rape fanservice kickery!

it is sosoososos preety and so witty (446) so preety and witty and gay!!!
Excellent chapter this is indeed getting fun just due to the mysterious surrounding the place. Hogback reminds of a cross between Dr. Robotnik and the docter from Rocky Horror Picture show with a hint of vampire. Very interesing character so far, can't wait to see more. And that insivible dude, looks like Oda read a bit of LXG (the comic not the movie) as both character seem to have similar traits. To say the least am really getting hook into this arc.
So if it is Brooke that means he knew Hogback BEFORE he died, so maybe Hogback gave Brooke his fruit and attacked his ship, killed him andused this all to experiment with life and death. After all, there has to be more to Brooke's background than what he told us.
You're taking the words out of my mouth! I thought about this, too. It's Hogback's dream to find a way to revive people after death… so he maybe invented a devil's fruit wich allows to live once more and at the same time Brooke and his crew entered the fog. Brooke ate the fruit (by accident? or was he the experimental project?) and in order to test the fruit, Hogback killed him (the pirate crew wich annihilated Brooke and his nakama could actually been a zombie crew...). But Brooke's soul got lost for a year and Hogback thought his experiment was a failure, so he left Brooke's body behind. Someone mentioned that Hogback looks like he want to say "He's alive?!" when Usopp talks about "a skeleton with Afro".
Another one: Maybe the invisible guy is Mr. Shadowsnatcher? Brooke said: "It's been more than ten years since I saw livings!" But in Chapter 443, he mentioned that his shadow was stolen a few years ago. So his shadow was stolen by a ghost (it's not a living being) or someone… invisible. So that Brooke couldn't exactly say if the shadowsnatcher is alive or not. Right now, we have to topics in this arc: A stolen shadow and the fight against the death... I wonder how Oda wants to put these topics together ^^
btw: I like the theory that the invisible guy is Brooke's shadow I'm sure that there's a special relation between Mr. Invisible and Brooke anyway... both perverts XD
I'm really loving this.
The atmosphere, the arts, all the references (Alice in Wonderland's smiling cat! Love this guy!), and one sweet colour spread. Can't go wrong with Vikings.
And I'm really glad I stopped ruinning One Piece for myself by reading such things as spoilers. The enjoyement increases by at least a thousand times.
I kinda wanna add something too. The Nami scene.
While I understand why some people like this kinda stuff, I didn't like it one bit…if not hated it.
Not because of "Argh! I hate fanservice", but because, I've grown to really love One Piece characters, as characters over the years, and the sight of one of them being, naked, borderline raped, against her well, by an invisibme enemy. Let's say that it..."bothers" me.
Wonder if Oda did that on purpose...and I do feel it has one. At least for future events.
I don't hook this theory that Dr. Hogback is our villain arc… that's too predictable, just because he has secrets and looks a creepy guy.
Also, I was thinking if this invisible man can be a DF user, someone who ate a fruit like Invisible no Mi and got the hability to became invisible anytime he wants.
thanx for this. forgot alll about one piece till now !
@Pass:
But how would his shadow be able to talk?
Maybe Hogback tried to revive Brooke, but something gone wrong and it brought back to "life" only his shadow.
Anyway, i don't think Hogback is the kind of guy who attacks ships, he's a doctor admired by Chopper after all..of course, assuming he really is the man.
Mmh yeah first I was wondering about that too. I'm not too familiar with all facets of politeness adressing stuff in Japanese. As far as I know "oi" is the dialect version of "ore", which is why "Oimo" the giant in Enies Lobby is a pun. Meaning "me too", if I remember correct the first line he said.
I looked it up in my dictionary and for "oira" it said "we"..–
.. okay, now I've counterchecked and my other dictionary has it as "I, we". Aaand... wasn't Kumadori referring to himself as "oira" too? Can't remember rigth now and I don't have my tankobons with me. But I'll look into it later.
In any case we can't tell for sure right now since we don't even know the identity of the invisible man (but I like the theories with the lionman and Brook's shadow). It sure does sound more creepy though when he's ordering "become our bride". Like "Wtf there's more of those guys and they're into sharing their women…??? 0_ô"
@Impel:
Hogback has a special laugh! He must be a villain!
So does Brooke, but I don't see him trying to stitch together random creatures in a deluded bid for immortality.
wow! thanks! :) i've been waiting for this. ^.^
A few thoughts:
I'm really intrigued by Cindry. For starters, her name is the latest reference to fairytales that Oda has introduced (a maid called Cinderella). Then we get two references to marriage in only one chapter, Cindry apparently went insane after her fiance rejected her and then this invisible man proposes to Nami. It'd be interesting if there was a relationship between them. Another thing that puzzles me is that Cindry has obviously been intervened by Hogback, as we can see from her scars. Does that make her an undead? When did she let herself be turned into such a mess and why? Maybe she committed suicide and Hogback revived her, or tried to and he just saved her life.
Another thing is the explanation of Hogback's "dream". This could well cement the hints that he's a D. However, I don't think so myself. He seems to know Brook. I wouldn't be surprised if he held a grudge against him for the single fact that Brook accomplished merely by eating a Devil Fruit what he hasn't been able to do with science.
There also has to be something really creepy lurking in the laboratory. I don't see Hogback as much of a fighter, Luffy will end up fighting against some huge abomination made of combined zombies or something like that.
