Min-Woo Hyung can do incredible stuff (his cover images) but it seems like the stuff inside the covers is weak by comparison. As the resident Rebirth fanboy, I also have to endorse Kang-Woo Lee's stuff, although you can definitely see changes and reductions in the 12-year run of the series.
As a whole, I tend to suspect that:
Samurai 7, perhaps, depending how you define 'lead characters' – titular characters start dropping about halfway through the story, and by the end, only three are left standing.
Frankly, the problem with Hellsing is that it started out serious and eventually stretched serious to insane.
I suppose I also found its take on the underlying history necessary to make the plot work more than a little absurd.
