I figured I'd start another thread specifically for topics surrounding view counts, Nielsen ratings, and 'top 10 in this many countries' discussion. All the good ol number crunching that some people enjoy for some reason.

Week 1 drew 140,000,000 hours watched and 18.5 million views. Week 2 drops in about 10 minutes, with subsequent weeks dropping Tuesdays at Noon PDT.

Note that week 2 saw the drop of several long running series that have been pulling attention away from One Piece in daily rankings, so I don't entirely expect it to hold up in the US. I am however curious about how it holds up in week 3, as there's nothing significant premiering. (Week 4, however, is Sex Education, so, well, it was a good run)

Another thing I'm keeping an eye on is the number of times the soundtrack is played on Spotify, a possible indicator of the series' popularity and virality. Thus far, nothing too impressive on that front, but My Sails are Set has been picking up around 200,000~250,000 listens a day, but that number has been steadily dropping from a 250k peak. We'll see how that changes in the coming days.

In next 7 days = 145 mils

Considering the tv series is about 8 hours long it means out of 19.5 mils individuals about 18 mils watched all 8 episodes
8hx 18mils = 148 mils hours

That is quite some retention.

For week 3 I would however think the marketing power and word of mouth and One Piece/Anime fans would stop a bit unless some new marketing push comes out and thus the numbers will drop substantially in the 3rd week. If 100 mils are reached that would be awesome

Most these shows drop off at week 3, unless you are Dahmer, Wednesday or ST4 which OPLA isn't ( yet)

A 50% drop in Week 3 is about average, but I don't think there are any big releases soon so OPLA might do better. 400 million hours viewed won't be hit until Week 4.

What is really like to see is how the live action has affected the anime's numbers since there are many stories of people starting the anime after finishing S1. It's probably just a slight bump but it'd still be interesting.

These numbers are only for all of last week, so it should have already broken 300 Million by today. I think by end of next week it will have hit 400 Million pretty comfortably.

OPLA has no real product placement given the nature of the production. Im still wondering how Netflix can profit of higher viewerrate in general except for rentention rate. Or does netflix has advertisment in lower tier suscriptions? From a economical point of view streaming services are a conundrum for me.

All the Kdramas are so full of product placements. Koreans are really smart when it comes to producing imo

Even if the view numbers are not the best(but they are still pretty good), the potential for rise in the next season is great due to very positive critic and audience reception. You would have to be a total moron to not give it a second season.

The actual question is not whether we get a second season, but rather what budget will it have and how many episodes.

One Piece holds up pretty well with 75.5 million hours and 10 million views. That puts us at 360.5 million hours and 47.8 million views over 18 days.

@congol 33.6 million to be exact. But let's temper our expectations, this is extremely unlikely to happen unless it has a long tail 28-91 days out. Why? One Piece has been consistently ever-so-slightly behind the #10 spot in hours viewed. I think it's currently about 20 million hours behind Queen Charlotte at the same point in its lifespan. And Queen Charlotte was nearly an hour shorter, so its view equity is that much higher.

That's not to say that a final ranking somewhere in the low teens isn't likely. I think it'll definitely end up being a top 15 show. But it'll likely just miss out on the top 10 by a hair.

I feel like Wednesday sets an unusual and unrealistic high standard. Did 252 million people really watch it? It almost makes me wonder if those numbers are inflated somehow. That it has 100 million views on Stranger Things sounds absurd.

Oh no doubt numbers are inflated and manipulated one way or the other

For example Lord of The Rings had to succeed so amazon made sure it was always abailablevwhen people would be surffing the menus and would stsrt playing = thus getting views. Next to that they take liberties in deciding in what environments it is watched.
Do you watch it solo in pair as a family as a gathering.... it is so manipulated that the entire thing may just be called a scam.

So no one knows the real numbers on streaming stuff. Disney has been fighting against revealing them for royalty reasons as well. (Contractual payouts). Could be same shit with OP as well.
So some times they actually rrduce the numbers intentionally as well

Nah, it actually makes perfect sense. It was a brand new product with a start and end you could binge 8 episodes of, and rewatch.

Stranger Things is now a 8 year old property and you need to have watched the first 30 hours of episodes before you can watch season 4. So it's already existing fans would have jumped on the new season when it came out, but it wasn't going to get any new viewers, or anyone rewatching the not-stand-alone season multiple times. Plus like two of the episodes were feature length so less conducive to a casual viewing. AND they split the season in halves for some reason so...

It all adds up to lots of people watching it, but once they found out what happens next not wanting to revisit it, and not being able to spread it through word of mouth or hype. You were already in for ST or you weren't. Wednesday was new.

@Robby I suppose that's mostly true, but the trend for Stranger Things has always been the opposite (it grows every season) so for season 4 to be the biggest season yet and for Wednesday to somehow topple that in its first season implies magnitudes more popularity for Wednesday than Stranger Things in its first season. And Stranger Things in its first season was like four-quad lightning-in-a-bottle.

Of course, I could see how Wednesday would equally be four-quad lightning in a bottle. You've got your boomers coming for The Addams Family, your Gen Xers/millennials coming for Tim Burton and the Addams Family (we got those reboots in the 90s that people are nostalgic for) and Gen Z is here for Jenna Ortega and the updated tropes.

Which I suppose also is why One Piece isn't going anywhere near those types of numbers. I feel One Piece appeals strongly to the younger two generations, but the older two generations still make up 40% of Netflix's subscriber base and they have limited to no familiarity with the source material.

Though the reach OPLA has enjoyed has made up for some of that lack of brand recognition. I've been coming across a lot of videos and stories from people about their parents who never bat an eye at the anime becoming heavily invested in the live action. So that bodes well for season 2.

Applying Nielsen's minutes to Netflix's hours and views formula (which are likely to yield different results and may therefore be an inaccurate comparison), that translates to 21.67 million hours watched (compared to 140 million globally) and ~2.86 million total views (out of 18.5 million globally). So about 16-17% of OP's worldwide performance is coming from the U.S.

I also calculated Who is Erin Carter's minutes against its runtime views and got ~2.92 million total views for it that same week, which aligns with Netflix's official US top 10 and suggests EC narrowly edged out over One Piece for the week (it had the whole week and One Piece had four days). So it was a razor-close #2.

None of these results are particularly surprising. OP is doing well, but the evidence is that it's doing comparatively better internationally than it is domestically, and this further supports that.

Well, OP is finally being published in Portugal, in 3-in-1 volumes.
The first book came out in November 2022 and the latest one, the 4th, came out just this past december. Meaning we're up to Whiskey Peak.
And from what I can gather it's been selling well. It's volumes are usually in top 10 best sellers list of comic books in big book stores and are popular on the end of the year lists organized by blogs and sites about comics.

I wouldn't say the live action was the only reason the portuguese publisher finally took the leap but I imagine it helped since the anime episodes we got only went up to Arabasta and weirdly also some post time-skip tv specials. Film Red was also in cinemas here last year.
OP has a decent enough fan-base here but it was built by fansubs, scanlations, and the internet.

Before it was being published in portuguese we could easily buy the Viz version volumes in any bookstore that sells manga, it still is and I have a couple of volumes in english from 15 years ago, but it's so cool to finally be able to read and collect it in my native language.

@Don-Quichotte-De-Flamingo Not a whole lot, but at least in the US, One Piece's stock has been rising. It's hard to say how much of that's JUST because of the live action, though, because One Piece was blowing up whether the live action came out or not.

The New York Times keeps a monthly list of the 15 bestselling Graphic Books and Manga in the US, and has kept it since September 2019.

One Piece made its first appearance on the list in August 2022 for Volume 100, at #12.

It appeared on the list three times in 2023: in April, Vol. 102 reached #7, in July, Vol. 103 soared to #4, and in November, Vol. 104 reached #7.

There's also NPD->Circana BookScan's monthly Top 20 Adult Graphic Novels list: https://icv2.com/articles/comics/view/13709/bookscan-top-20-gns-index . One Piece rarely if ever appeared on these lists before cracking #2 when Vol. 100 came out. But 102, 103, and 104 all topped the charts in 2023 and remained on it for multiple months.

This suggests that factors OTHER than the live action are driving the sales increase--the live action didn't debut until August and we were all mocking it well into July. The series was already popping off a year prior. But could there have been a perfect time to put out a well-received live action adaptation? The live action certainly isn't HURTING One Piece by any stretch.
