Remember folks, this is an adaptation, not a 1:1 reproduction. Things will be different, either through production limitations or the episode length. This first episode is the most faithful of the bunch, but the most important thing is capturing the emotion of the moments and honoring the larger plot.
Have fun with it!
My biggest gripe so far is Garp. Otherwise overall highly enjoyed it
my heart when watching this episode: this is fun
my mind: stop thinking about the manga stop thinking about the manga stop thinking about the manga
I loved the first episode so much — kudos to Greg and the entire cast/crew for making such a delightful production.
My girlfriend, who rarely shows any interest in anime/manga, really enjoyed it — and really picked up on some character nuances that proved just how much love was put into the story. The casting was perfect; I can’t wait to watch the rest!!
I really enjoyed the first episode. The way the flashback was implemented throughout is how I expected the show to be structured and so I wonder if we'll get that for all the flashbacks (also I guess Zoro's will take place during the Mihawk episode as it did not happen here). Speaking of Zoro, he cut a man in half and Alvida clubbed a man's head in. They are really not holding back with the actual violence in this, huh?
Kudos to Captain Morgan as well for having his fight last more than a few seconds this time around. Actually made him seem a little tough.
I think this was a pretty good opening for this. Luffy, Zoro, Nami all intersecting at Shells Town sprinkled with snippets with Luffy's backstory (to keep you watching) was a good call. Really surprised they had Alvida mace dudes with blood stains and Zoro cutting a dude in HALF (darkly funny when he brings both halves in a bag to collect the bounty). Actually on that note, I don't think we've ever seen Zoro collect a bounty so good way to showcase his pre-pirate life.
Nami masquerading as a marine was really neat and another way to show off her quick thinking and sneakiness, Aside from G8 filler I don't think she's ever done that in the manga so that's another point for something fresh right there.
Morgan/Coby/Alvida were all cast perfectly, Helmeppo being a total dork/loser is very faithful.
I suppose where it has to grow on me is Garp, as he's more interwoven into plot - both being at Roger's execution making the annoucement (which given their history could've happened if Oda had the idea back then) but also him showing up in the east as Luffy is adventuring. He looks great and has a strong presence but the goofier side isn't quite there yet. Maybe saving for the twist that "that's Luffy's grandpa?!"
Yeah, I think they want us as an audience to believe that Garp is going to be this big threat to Luffy (which he is tbf) only to then do the big reveal that this is all personal because he just wants to stop his Grandson.
Loved this episode. Scene of Luffy and Nami meeting was very funny. Very surprising how much violence is in this, I love it though. It makes someone even like Alvida feel more threatening.
And, it's interesting how they are forming the crew. I think they won't be real crew, until after Arlong Park? And I like Garp, I like the actor, seen him in various things. And, they are definitely setting up the non One Piece people, into thinking Garp is hunting Luffy because he's a Pirate, but he's of course his Grandpa.
The Zoro fight with Mr 7 was crazy, he cut that dude in half. If they ever make it to Punk Hazard, I fear for Monet, lol.
Also interesting how they did Morgan, he wasn't as big of an a-hole that he is in the Manga. And Luffy and Zoro vs Morgan was interesting. I really want to see how they handle Luffy's fighting in particular, it felt kinda of awkward in the fight with Morgan. That would be my only criticism. But overall, like a 9/10 for me.
I really liked Luffy's fighting in that scene against all the marines. Not in love with the way it looked against Alvida until the impact of that final hit, but the way he snapped it back and held his arm is great imo.
Wow, I was completely impressed with that episode. 9/10 as far as I'm concerned.
I am very much ok with this version of Luffy. For now there will always be the manga version and the live action version.
Garp having an Irish accent was an interesting choice. I figured he'd also be brazillian.
I really like how they are making sense of these character coming together. Instead of the crew going to different locations and meeting new characters, there is a bit of interconnectedness. Sure it makes East Blue seem like a smaller space, but I still like it.
The Axe Hand Morgan fight was surprisingly fun. Damn the choreographers on this show have gone above and beyond.
Also, oh my, I did not expect the live action to be as bloody brutal as the manga. I can't wait.
Lol, its already the first episode and I can't help but imagine what this team will do with the grandline.
Whiskey peak alone will be a banger.
"Nobody dies in One Piece"
Live Action: "I guess we'll have to do something about that."
Overall, I liked this first episode. I'll be watching again along with the rest of the series this weekend with my partner, but I have some thoughts that make me apprehensive, yet hopeful. I'm glad this is shaping up to be a big success!
My partner likes it surprisingly, she usually never shown any interest if tell something about One Piece, lol.
This episode is very good 9/10
Loving the Red Hair Pirates interaction at the flashback, but lmao at Ben Beckmann, and is fat dude with cap that laughing with Roux and Yassopp supposed to be Howling Gab?
I was smiling throughout the entire episode. Really love how they put bounty posters on-screen when a pirate is introduced. I'm digging the different take on events, keeps things fresh while with still hitting important story beats.
Ok watched it together with my girlfriend.
She knows about One Piece in general but only through me, she didnt watch anine or read the manga.
Her opinion: 10/10 she really liked it
My opinion
A) my casual fan glasses opinion 8/10
My anime / manga fan opinion.
Overall wanna see ep 2

I hope someone decides to put the live action versions of all the characters in the Wiki. It'd be fun to compare them all that way.
Someone defo will. And heck, I think it's funny if Ben Beckmann is still a ladies man in this one.

Pell is 100% going to die in this version.
I never thought I'd see that side of Helmeppo...but it is in character. I can't deny that.
Also, I admit I'm having trouble getting past the changes at some point. Some thing are just too set in stone for me, and maybe I need to get over it.
Like, maybe a weird nitpick but it's weird seeing Luffy and Garp talk so much. It seems out of character, yet really it's the only way to move the story forward isn't it?
Just watched the first episode and yeah, I really enjoyed it as well. I especially loved Nami's and Zoro's portrayals; Zoro is amazingly badass and I LOVED all of his fight scenes. I remember thinking all the way back when this was first announced that they would for sure remove his three-sword style as I thought it would be impossible to get right in live-action. I guess I underestimated them thoroughly.
And I loved Emily's acting, much better and more emotive than the trailers made it seem. She really incorporated Nami perfectly - I'm glad they included the scene where she tricks the Buggy pirates, it's a perfect showing of her character. She seemed badass, yet kinda vulnerable at the same time. And her interactions with Luffy were perfect, I could actually easily imagine anime Luffy and Nami in those scenes.
Helmeppo was fun, but I wish they would have included the scene of Luffy using him as a human shield, that one always made me laugh. Morgan seemed much less villainous to me in this version. I liked the pompous decoration of his room, though.
Some of the visuals were really neat as well, like Zoro blowing out the candles with his swords. So far, so good!
One episode down and I'm enjoying it so far.
Not happy with all the changes (Coby never actually standing up to Alvida in this version was disappointing) but overall I think it works.
Biggest surprise was Zoro's 3 sword style working in live action, thought it would look as goofy as heck, must be a nightmare to choreograph.
Lets see what episode two brings tomorrow.
Yeah, that was pretty good. Some things I liked, some things I didn't like.
I think Godoy, Mackenyu, and Rudd all did fine jobs in their performances. Not 1:1 copies of the original characters in terms of personality, but I think they basically got the spirit of them down.
Overall, not a big fan of the costume design. I know it's one of those things that's really hard to replicate in live action, especially with a TV show budget, but a lot of the costumes, especially Morgan's, looked like cheap cosplay.
Also, didn't really like Zoro splitting a guy in half. I'm generally not opposed to violence, but for One Piece that seemed a bit excessive.
The Gum-Gum sfx look pretty janky at times, but for the most part I think they pulled it off well enough.
Would've been nice to flesh out the story and characters a little more, but then we have the manga and anime for that. As it is, I think they did a pretty good job condensing the story and hitting all the major beats. And it was interesting to see how they changed things up a bit.
@aku-chan i don’t wanna spoil you but I had the same issue with Coby, and after finishing the show, I want to highlight the word “had”. Not super crazy after how it went down, but happy it did regardless.
I very much enjoyed the first episode. I was smiling through most of it, felt little tears welling up at times. I think they got the spirit of it right, at least so far.
When the adaption was announced, I was pretty sure it was going to be awful; so being pleasantly surprised is an understatement.
The marine base section felt a bit odd, of course, because it's straying from the source material more than the earlier parts. Funny thing is, I've actually forgotten exactly what happened at this part of the story. I read/watched those chapters nearly 20 years ago. But I can feel it...the closer something is to the original material, the more comfortable it is to me, and when it's different, it feels off.
Then there's my husband who only ever sees bits and pieces of the anime when I watch it sometimes. He says it's fun and he's enjoying it. This is the only way we'll ever watch One Piece together, so hopefully it stays good and it keeps going.
PS - did not expect naked Helmeppo butt
The Roger execution scene was just horrible, he should've been killed after shouting " i left it all in that place " and not after saying " it's yours to find ". Laugh tale should've been hinted at during this crucial moment but nope we got nothing of it
Also Garp would never say on behalf of the WG bullshit, he would never say that! they changed his character drastically ( to the worst sadly )
Garp look good but doesn't sound any good, he's never this serious at all he's the exact opposite of this foolery
Shanks was unexpectedly good, him and Buggy are so good I'm very happy. well done
Higuma & Morgan are good, the villains are well nailed including the original Mr.7
Luffy & Nami are acceptable but not Zoro, I just can't feel Zoro at all
It's like they forgot Zoro is an idiot slightly smarter than Luffy, and not this grumpy edgy guy at all
I'm just sad for the sandals man, the worst removal i can barely recognize Luffy without them
Adding Nami to shell town wasn't bad after all, wish if they kept Garp for the second season.
Didn't think I'd ever see Helmeppo's bare ass, but here we are lol.
@hideoushorrendous I get your take on this Zoro but to be fair, he does show some semblance of that slightly idiot side of him by falling for Morgan’s 7 day trap. Also, some of those other complaints you voiced make sense further down the show. Doesn’t make them any less valid, but every time I had a gut feeling of “oh God don’t go this route” with the characters or key moments, for the first time in a live action adaptation I found that they avoided those and actually remained way more faithful than I expected. Guess it’s just the past awful live action experiences that triggers that for me.
The only issue I had with Zoro is that he seems stronger than Luffy. Not to go full power scaler here, but Luffy should always be the strongest in the crew.
I wonder if there are any hints about the endgame in the manga in this series — just like how we received hints in all the films since Strong World.
This first episode has me convinced that Shanks will be the one to take out Luffy’s eye.
Well that was much better than I hoped.
For starters the opening was disappointing. We seem to be getting a somewhat different Garp from the start, which may end up better in the context of a live show, but not liking it much. But it is what it is, you know. At least there's a single line in there that hints at a somewhat deeper relationship between him and Roger. Sort of a saving grace against the whole "people can feel safe again now" part of the speech.
Roger's likeness is a bit of a bigger problem for me. They toned down on the badass part and dialed up on the joyful drunkard part. Yeah, he's supposed to be ill and nearing death, but still. The whole speech goes on too fast and there's no chance for silent pauses to increase the impact. So the event that is supposed to be trigger for a massive change in the world ends up being lukewarm instead of boiling hot.
Can't say I have issues with Zoro. The show doesn't have to introduce his wacky side the same way manga and anime did. I like that we've actually seen his confrontation with Mr.7 in this version, but I feel like the fight itself was over produced. The anime did a lot better with those moments of tension and quickly resolved fights. Zoro isn't (shouldn't be) the type to dance around and play when an opponent draws swords with the intent to kill. Feel like the impact would be better if the fight was drastically shorter.
Ben Beckman feels off. It's like they hired a first guy that came around with a pony tail, lol. But it's really not that bad.
Anyway, what really does a big part in carrying this whole show is goddamn Luffy. Since he is the first main draw of the manga itself, it means so much that they casted him so perfectly. The dude looks and acts as close as possible considering the rubber pirate counterpart from the comic. Just feels so organic. Even the shift from wacky to serious didn't feel forced, and I love that the show had the balls to have Luffy knock out a woman in the opening episode, lol.
Nami is also a great fit. The show is time constrained so it makes sense to have her on board right from the start. Her character doesn't have an opportunity to shine much at this point, so there's really not much I can say. The chemistry between the actors exists, that's the most important part.
Feel like I actually prefer the live show Morgan over manga version. It's like he takes himself lot less seriously. Even Helmeppo isn't nearly as annoying as he was in the original. Love the Helmeppo haircut twist, definitely didn't expect that. Or the cheeks, lol. It's a shame the show doesn't have Ripper in it, or the Koby send off from the original, but it might have made the episode too crowded. Maybe we don't need to see the marines are mostly god guys just yet, there's plenty of time for that, I guess.
Oh right, the fights look really good. Love the impact on the big moves and it's definitely a good idea to style it, considering the manga origins.
I dislike the wide angle lens close ups with a burning passion, and will never understand why they use it so much, but will probably become blind to it with time. With time, since I wanna see this whole thing. That already makes it vastly superior to Cowboy Bebop. Can't even remember if I watched the first episode or the first two episodes, but the pull to watch more was non existent. One Piece, on the other hand, while not without issues, is at least fun and translates the whole tone of the manga more faithfully.
Hey, if the show disappoints and doesn't get renewed, at least all the sweet merch I've been bombed with for weeks could drop in price. I've seen doozens of t-shirts, shirts, shorts, hats or towels I wanna own.
Just watched. I am totally impressed with results, mainly due the trailer being such a derp showcase and the manga live-action adaptions never been historically valuable. Aside from really few examples I can't remember live-action adaptions being good at any extent.
One Piece indeed accomplished the task. I guess it is due One Piece being ridiculous and the production accepting to roll with it. In any other past moment they would tried to make it more epic and serious, totally f*cking up the mood. I love the cast choices, from Luffy being as silly and dumb as the counterpart to Helmeppo, totally nailed in his assholeness. Garp also looked really good, and I totally embrace the overall aesthetic: his marine battleship is totally fire. I lol'd at Mr 7 finally getting a real face and at how both Zoro and Aluvida being really bloody fighter. The only one who didn't get to impress me is Shanks, whose actor really seems out of place. BTW, a full 9/10 (or 5/5 in the topic rating).
Edit.
A focus is needed on how they forged a more cohesive worldbuilding, making Garp, BW, Aluvida, Morgan and Buggy intersected and I really loved it.
I imagine the ship builds were a huge portion of the expenses. I could see Going Merry and Baratie eating up half the budget alone.
The first 20 minutes or so I wasn’t really enjoying it, there was this constant awareness that I was watching actors on a set (something about the night sky on Alvida’s ship reminded me of theater rehearsals).
And while I was thinking Luffy’s actor was nailing his energy and mannerisms, I kept thinking they felt kind of forced on a real person.
But soon after the Alvida bit I was already warmed up and finding Luffy’s cartoonesque energy cute instead of weird, and was enjoying everything else.
By the end, the fighting parts were the only ones I didn’t liked. Let’s see how it progresses.
The highlight had to be kid Luffy to me, really liked that boy’s acting (I usually dislike child actors).

Agreed. I was ready to groan my way through the flashback but Kid Luffy did a good job.
The ships and sets are really cool. Costumes are on point.
I didn’t buy Zoro’s motivations to join Luffy here. Luffy untied Zoro sure and they talked, but other than Helmeppo being a dick with those words there was no reason here to assume Axe-Hand wasn’t gonna keep his word. In fact other than the vain statue/portraits everywhere and slapping his son he didn’t show his maliciousness at all, which kinda defeats the purpose of showing “bad Marines”. Just think Luffy getting Zoro his swords and freeing him when they knew he was going to be killed was a better motivation, especially since Luffy also fed Zoro with the rice cakes when he asked for them.
That’s my biggest gripe in the episode. Really think Nami is shining the most so far. Luffy has the optimism down but he’s speaking to eloquently for my liking.
The episode also felt long too, but could just be me outgrowing the series in general. Gonna continue binging it today though so we’ll see how it goes from here. Also cheated here given I’ve read thoughts and opinions on this episode before watching it proper, the rest I don’t have as much of spoilers on/read/heard other thoughts about.
@TheAlbinoGoblin
I think this is intentional at this point, to make the non-fan audience question whether Luffy really deserves his allegiance.
Zoro IS more infamous at this point; Luffy is a nobody.
I haven't finished the series yet, but I'm guessing he's going to certainly have th me moment where people go" ok, he was holding back" ( much like Shanks).
Bit the bullet and signed up for Netflix. Watching this right now.
The guts that Koby had to clean up was pretty gross lol.
I'm wincing at the injuries and deaths! I don't watch enough shows I guess!
Now that I'm seeing this I'm realizing how weird it was for a kid to pout and eat a weird-looking fruit in the first place.
Rika approaching Zoro was pretty adorable. I couldn't stop getting distracted by the bag whenever it came into view.
What's with that Helmeppo scene, LOL
If I had it my way I would've said the marine ships shouldn't have kanji on the sails.

The motivation I saw was him evaluating whether Luffy would be someone who could help him achieve his goal. He had no reason to open up to Luffy about it but goes quiet when Luffy asks him "Is that all you are? Is that all you want?" He almost escapes on his own but thinks about it again.
Im now on my second watch through. All the closeup shots on the chararacters are really starting to annoy. Besides that, almost everything is better on the second viewing, Noticing alot of funny details like Coby cleaning Alvidas mace with a toothbrush lol.
Another detail i noticed: who was the second candle that Zoro lit for? was it for Mr 7 lol?

I think that is the joke. Mr 7 comments on it.
So the first episode was fun, I understand their reasoning of not starting with young Luffy, but I am annoyed with how the flash backs are so short.
I understand what they are going for, but once I think about longer flash backs coming up further down the season, like Namis flash back.
I feel like their emotional impact could suffer.
Crocodile was that woman in the execution scene. I am certain that the theory is true and we might find out. I imagine Crossguild is gonna come back around in the current events of the manga, as well as the revolutionaries.
The costumes are very One Piece, the sets look good. I liked the expansion around No. 7 and Zoro. Shifting the scene with Zoro eating the rice balls into the bar was a nice idea and it worked well. Helmeppo was fun and unlikeable not as bad as the early version of him in the manga, but it fits. Love it.
Do you think it was intentional that Oda had Luffy say he wants ten members on his crew, was he just repeating what Luffy originally said or is that his way on doubling down on the fact we’ll have one more crew member?
Technically he said 10 people and a bird lol
