There seems to be abig divide between how audiences and how critics liked the new Ant-Man movie. The critics' rating is at only 48% percent, while the audience rating is at 84%. I have a hard time believing the movie is seriously that weak that it deserves a rating below 50%. After looking at and comparing the critic vs. audience scores for other MCU films, I get the impression the audience ratings reflect my own feelings about the films better. Eternal also has a very low rating of 47%, while the audience rating of 77% seems a lot more fitting to me. I'm going to see the movie on Monday and I bet I'm going to have a good time.

Audience scores for franchise movies like this will always be skewed by the people who a) rush to see the movie straight away and b) are going to spend time putting points into the movies review score being the people most predisposed to like the movie no matter what. Like pick any Superhero movie with a middling reception, the audience score will ALWAYS be higher. Black adam was recieved critically and commercially with a major MEH and sits at an 88% audience rating. Even something as notorious as the Goyer Suicide Squad has double the score for audiences compared to critics at 58%.
-
@Daz Black Adam having an 88% audience rating is indeed kinda damning for me How the hell that movie get such a high rating? Even other weaker superhero films like Suicide Squad or Batman v Superman got more middling audience ratings around 60%.
Oh well, I'll admit it, the audience score probably isn't best way to gauge the movie's quality either.
-
@Riddler Black Adam is fun, that's about it. Plot isn't too complicated, Rock isn't being too Rock, secondary protagonists are pretty cool and the action bits are well made. Not sure in what percentage DC fans contributed to it (is there a general consensus on the averages?), but it's not really that bad of a movie.
Speaking of Eternals, for me it's closer to 47% than 77%.
Wonder what I'll make out of Ant tomorrow or Sunday.
-
So, I liked the first Ant Man movie fine, though I thought that the absence of a real character arc for Scott was its biggest problem. Likewise I found his desire to be there for his daughter to be his most endearing character trait, even if the movies never mined it for as much pathos as I'd liked.
As such, I was very interested in the "Scott wants to make up for lost time with Cassie and ill-advisedly teams up with Kang" angle introduced in the Quantumania trailers. Not caring about spoilers I asked around about how this was handled and it turns out
-
To me it’s a flawed movie, even more so than the other Phase 4 Films which I mostly thought were fine but just had tonal issues that depend on a person’s personal preference. I think the rating is fitting. I’ll post full thoughts later I think when I get them more cohesive and more people have a chance watching the film.
-
@Daz Whatever you posted in spoilers isn't showing up for me. I have to look at the quoted text to see it.
-
God, this movie felt like a fart in the wind. It was a thing that happened and...that was it.
-
Ant-Man was a pile of shit.
Whatever you liked about the previous Ant-Mans... it's not in this one. No mini-maxi action sequences, no Michael Pina, no off-center humor. Instead you get 95% of a movie that takes place in front of ugly, uninspired green screen, some of the worst expository dialogue in the MCU and a villain and supporting cast as bland as can be.
In conclusion, can't wait for fans who've been complaining about George Lucas and James Cameron for 20 years to be awe-inspired by this.
-
Antman should have gone inside thanos and do you know what. Would have been what ironman was after endgame.
-
I have to say, as a tokusatsu fan I was really hoping that we could get Hank and Janet in suits, too, for a Five Rider transformation and fight. What a shame.

No Michael Pina?! That might be the most damning thing yet.

Maybe it's because I went in with low expectations, but I actually thought Quantumania was fine. Yeah, definitely on the lower tier of Marvel movies, but I've definitely seen worse.

I really loved Quantumania.
-
I think I basically agree with Nobodyman's thoughts on the film. It was...fine. I had my fun, but it wasn't anything spectacular. Pretty much a 7/10, I'd say. I don't quite get the hate some feel towards the film though. It just seems like a rather average, middle of the road MCU film to me, which is kinda what I expect from an Ant-Man film, to be honest. My biggest criticism would be that it indeed lacks some of the charm that made the prior two movies so endearing as well as the fun they had with the shrinking powers previously. Also,
That said, I don't have a problem with them trying to get a bit away from that small-scale feeling the first two films (particularly the second one) had. Just because it's an Ant-Man film doesn't mean it can't have higher stakes and a more epic feeling, though honestly, the movie isn't nearly as epic or emotionally draining as the trailers quite effectively made it seem. I did buy the stakes of the story thanks to a very intimidating Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror but things never seem quite as dire as I assumed they would be. It's all a little predictable, to be honest.
One thing I really liked is how the main cast was used. I always loved the trio of Scott, Hope and Hank and Janet as well as, surprisingly to me, Cassie were nice additions. I expected for Cassie to be portrayed as a brat that fights with Scott and thus assumed I would be quite annoyed by her character...but no, she was fine, and her and Scott's relationship felt as sweet as always to me. Michelle Pfeiffer was the standout here though as Jane got a lot of focus, which makes sense.
In general, I thought they did a decent job of giving each member of the family some nice or cool moments.
Some more spoilery remarks:

i think i need to re-watch the end of Loki to remember what the heck is even the deal with Kang. I think the actor is pretty great, but this movie overall feels like just an entry to set him up.
They are technically different characters. This movie setting him up is because he is new, techncally, they don't want people to NEED to have seen the tv shows, and because he's theoretically gonna be the big bad for the next phase or two.
Guy at the end of Loki was the master of the universe. Shenanigans happened and now that guy is gone and there infinite versions throughout time that'll be up to no good.
-
Ahhhhhh okay, man that's what happens when you don't keep up with MCU
Either I relutantly kinda keep up or come Avengers 4(5?) I'm gonna have NO idea what's even happening
-
Been refusing to watch the shows, well, not that I could find time, but seems Loki is just 6 half hour episodes, not that much of a time investment.
Ant-Man was fun for me, didn't expect much. Simple Marvel fatigue at this point. And the movies are way too formulaic, especially considering how many of them are at this point.
-
@Razh said in Marvel Movies Thread - Holy Shitballs:

Sure. But once you throw in Wandavision, Falcon, Hawkeye, Ms. marvel, What If, She-Hulk, MoonKnight, and whatever else plus the movies, phase 4 is asking for 50 hours in 2 years, which is more than phases 1-3 asked for in 10 years.
It's not an insane amount if you're really enjoying it all, I'll put that much into a video game in a month or a good audiobook, but its a significant increase from what they were asking before which was 2-3 movies a year.
-
@Robby Oh no, it's way too much all together. Even if the main product, the movies weren't in a creative decline.
Buddy of mine recommended Loki, especially since it might tie into the next (current?) phase. I'll watch What If and maybe Moonknight, maybe. The rest just doesn't seem that interesting.
-
I think I calculated once that staying up-to-date with the MCU's post-endgame output was equivalent to watching 40 90-minute movies or something. Certainly if you throw in keeping up to date with Star Wars into the mix; it's all spaced out enough that keeping up is feasible, but it'd mean dedicating a massive chunk of free time to just one or two franchises at the exclusion of other stuff.
-
Eh, I feel like that's a tad overblown. Think about how much time you have to invest for any longer tv show. Nobody is complaining about how much of a time investment it is to watch all 10 seasons of Friends or all episodes of Lost or whatever.
Of course it feels daunting and tiresome if you feel like you are forced to watch all of it as soon as it comes out in order to keep up with the MCU, but I don't think that's really true. I still haven't seen Ms. Marvel yet and will just binge it a couple of weeks before Captain Marvel comes out to better understand the character. But there is no hurry to do that.
And even if you don't...do you really miss that much? Sure, if you've seen Loki S1, it will help you understand a few things better, but it won't really ruin your enjoyment of Quantumania or of Kang's character in it if you have not.
Personally, I always watch the MCU shows with a friend. We meet every other week for a few hours and watch 2 or 3 episodes of one of the shows. Sometimes we watch something else inbetween shows or a movie instead. It doesn't feel like homework at all.
There is no need to stress yourself out with watching this stuff. I went to see Infinity War and Endgame with a friend who had seen neither the Captain America nor the Ant-Man films. I explained a few things here and there to fill out some details for her, but she had a great time with both films either way.
I just don't think it's quite such a big deal or problem. All that said, I'm glad Feige said they want to slow down the releases in the future, that can only be good for quality control.

If you binge LOST, you probably do it as one or two episodes a day, over the course of months. And it's all there is. One cast of characters, one story with a cohesive start and end. If you don't like it, you stop and it affects nothing else. If you do like it, it doesn't matter how long it takes because it has an end and you know exactly when the get off point is.
And if you're binging that one show, and only that one show, that'll be because you're enjoying it, not because you feel obligated to watch it so you can also understand X-Files and Twin Peaks.
Like if you want to Xena you can and that's about 120 episodes and you can get through that in three months. But it has a lot of crossovers with Hercules and so suddenly you have to watch both shows, even though one show isn't written nearly a well as the other and you might not like the main characters. That's suddenly 250 episodes, half of which you don't care about, because you want to make sure you understand whats going on between the crossovers and arcs that happen across both shows. You can look at checklists and skip a large chunk of it to watch only the "neccesary" stuff, but there's still dozens of extra episodes you need if you want to understand that character X that crosses over between both shows is talking about or that character Y died.
Same with Buffy/Angel or the Arrowverse. They're standalone and you can just watch the one show you like... until they aren't.
Heck, even something like Doctor Who where the continuity is kind of loose is a problem since the eras of the show are so different. Just because you like David Tennant's 4 year run doesn't mean you'll like Jodie Whittaker's or Peter Capaldi's run or anything from the classic era. You feel slightly obligated to keep up but there can be entire multi-year stretches you just don't care for and then its a chore rather than something you actually enjoy. Then throw in Torchwood and the Sarah Jane adventures and...
Marathoning one show you like is easy. Marathoning one show you like and then three others with different characters you're just obligated to watch because its related is not a good time.

Moving forward I wonder the challenges of keeping ALL the disney+ content in mind with every new movie, like the directors and writers and stuff would have to be familiar, but in some cases would a subtle recap be advantageous? or maybe they want the movie to go a certain way but then the brass is like "uhhh that's cool, but could you put in a reference to these scene in episode 7 of this show?"
-
Most of the MCU creatives that are brought in are basically given assignments or were cooking up in house. Some of the writers from the series are being bumped to writing for the films.
There are directors that have made remarks on being involved. Lucrecia said she was told not to worry about the action scenes and then dropped out from directing due to that. he added,
"Companies are interested in female filmmakers but they still think action scenes are for male directors. The first thing I asked them was maybe if they could change the special effects because there's so many laser lights... I find them horrible. Also the soundtrack of Marvel films is quite horrendous. Maybe we disagree on this but it's really hard to watch a Marvel film. It's painful to the ears to watch Marvel films"
Tarantino referred to MCU directors as "hired hands".
So, I don't think they have to be that familiar with comics or the MCU itself. Just their assignment. The MCU brain trust makes sure that whether they are in house or newly hired, they will be fine.
-
Yeah, the MCU films look and sound bad and the fact that directors are given zero control over those things really go to show that these films are just not meant to be personal and high-quality. It's a terrible shame.
-
Can confirm trying to catch up on the Disney+ shows is one heck of a slog, I started about 6 months ago (I was hoping they would get a physical release despite Disney's reputation on that front) and I've only got through 3 and a half shows.
Wandavision and Loki were good, but I really struggled to get through Falcon and the Winter Soldier (Too much focus on the Blip and I'll never get over my hatred of that plot point), and even though I've moved on to Hawkeye my enthusiasm still hasn't returned.
Unfortunately, it looks like the franchise is going to continue to get even more interconnected, so I'll have to persevere! -
A lot of Marvel fans been begging for a series or special on the time before everyone got snapped back. I doubt they get it. Most likely used as a backdrop throughout the films. Secret Invasion seems like it will use it too.

Speaking of more Marvel, Steven Yuen is joining Thunderbolts in a "significant" role.

I know that the rumors going around town are that Yuen is playing Sentry, which I think would be a fun role. He's already playing a similar type of 'Superman' character in Invincible so it seems like a good fit.

They would totally do it. I can see them laughing their asses off.

I don’t know what I think about Sentry being in the movies, he’s a very weird character
Also it’s kind of his thing to always be the strongest, kind of seems like what there doing with Captain Marvel already

Yeah Hulk and Thor are always portrayed as up there with him and vastly superior to Captain Marvel in the comics, which probably adds to the irrational hate Brie Larson seems get from angry fanboys

I really want to see Sunspot and Cannonball in the MCU soon

Okay, finally saw Ant-Man. Perfectly enjoyable, but not as good as the first 2. Basically that's it. But if we want to break it down a little better:
- Way too much green screen, but the designs of the creatures/people/settings were fabulous.
- Kang is great (thanks in large part to Jonathan Majors)
- Cassie was . . . fine, but we needed more Hope and less Cassie.
- Not enough of the snarky humor that makes Ant-Man itself, but most of the jokes it did have hit really well.
- Michelle Pfeifer is amazing because she's Michelle Pfeifer
- Finale was too haywire
- Paul Rudd never fails to be charming and likable, even if Scott didn't get enough growth. He at least kicked ass
- NO MICHAEL PENA IS A CRIME
-
Oh, and the post-credit scene made me chortle. Looking back, I should have expected it.

Marvel Wants Details About Who Posted ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ Leaked Dialogue to Reddit, Google Docs
Disney’s Marvel is trying to track down the identity of the person (or people) who allegedly released a 63-page transcript of dialogue from “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” online — one month before the film’s theatrical premiere.
A request filed Friday (March 10) on behalf of Marvel in federal district court in California asked the court to issue a subpoena to compel Reddit to identify the person or group responsible for sharing dialogue from “Quantumania” to the r/MarvelStudiosSpoilers subreddit “on or about” Jan. 20, 2023. The film, starring Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly and Jonathan Majors, opened wide in the U.S. on Feb. 17.
-
Gee I wonder if this will be handled better than the investigation into who leak the SCOTUS overturning RoevWade
-
The subreddit closed. I think it’s permanent too. Bummed given I followed it pretty devoutly.
-
Woah, yeah, r/MarvelStudiosSpoilers has gone private. I wonder what happened? O.o
-
Most likely being targeted due to Quantumania's performance. Making an example out of whoever was on Google Docs and Marvel Studios Spoilers.
To me, I highly doubt it originates on either of those platforms. Those are just the most popular ones to make an example out of. These companies enjoy the manga scans and movie leaks on social media and forums that result in more of an audience, but when they see it's affecting them negatively, they see an opportunity to take them out.
With every download site, forum, etc that gets taken out, another one takes its spot. These companies are just lashing out and still lose in the end.
-
Ugh, that sucks. It really goes to show that the courts and cops exist only to do the bidding of the wealthy.
-
So now all MCU movies/shows are only "coming soon".
