I don't think I've ever seen a OP group that didn't involve a variety of clashing colors (except CP9, but it made sense there).
Just take a look at those clowns:

Even CP9 had a few oddballs like Fukurou, Kumadori, and Spandam.
another thing i don't get is why their skin is, most of the time, pink without a different shade.
people coming from everywhere in the world and still how many human chars have we seen with tan, black or so skin?
is this something oda has ever talked about?

There has been long talk about this here for years. It's definitely unfortunate. Miss Monday and Caribou are a few of the only characters I remember with darker skin color.

It would be cool if he changed it up, but I think that's just because Oda's a japanese person and they are also the audience he mainly writes for. There are some more mixed crowds, but if you look at anime/manga in general, skin color is very homogenized.
I love Ulti's color scheme btw, she is just the best. I also like the background colors matching Luffy's outfit (red west, purple belt).
Final colors are great, especially Ulti's
Last few years?
Oda has been doing color variety in antagonistic groups since Alabasta.
Actually, since Buggy's crew even. In 1997.
Quite literally every antagonistic group in the series has interesting color variety. Pearl, Hachan, Chess (Wapol's archer) all come to mind as earlier antagonists with weird colors, though Hachan makes sense. .
Well , Oda said that Usopp would be from 'Africa' if he was from the real world (also Blackbeard from Somalia), and there's several characters that have black features and almost feel like they should be black, but they're just white for some reason.
I think Oda might just not want to bother with the inking. Even for fishmen, I think there's not a single one of them that has a darker skin-tone in the white and black manga.

Aokiji was considered by a lot of people to look black, but he's based on a Japanese actor who he looks like. I think the same thing is happening with a lot of the characters with "black features." It's actually kind of funny in how diverse Oda's art style is overall he only acknowledges one skin tone in his work.

Oda's contemporaries largely do better than him on this. Promised Neverland, Doctor Stone, Naruto, Bleach, Hunter X Hunter, Jojo, DragonBall, My Hero, Full Metal Alchemist, etc. All of these shows have darker skinned characters that are clearly ethnically different. Oda has lots of races, but all of his humans look largely the same. It's complex though, because it's not like he hasn't written with racism and prejudice in mind.
Well, for what's it's worth, even after the anime reverted Doflamingo, Robin and Zoro's darker skin, Teach still has a darker complexion.
Final official colours!

I'm a bit worried Oda decided on the TR colors based only on those face shots and the colors might not look as good when the full designs are put together… but, damn, I love how every single one of them is looking there.
So, assuming they all start using horns right after joining the Beast Pirates, I gotta say Who'swho looks hilarious in my mind without the horns.

So now that it's clear Luffy isn't wearing his fishman island outfit I hope Zoro has alt colors too. He looked so out of place in op 23.
I'm not sold on P1 horns being real yet. Those pointy eyebrows on his dino form look nothing like the horns he has on human form.
I know it's because I love OP, but it's still crazy to me that I can remember so many character's names and barely forget who they are connected to. Most stories don't have as many characters and I still struggle to remember them.
I looked at Sasaki so many times and never thought of Kokoro until the I seen the hair color reveal on Twitter. The hat is different, but the way it sits on their head, Kokoro being a drinker and Sasaki having the drink before he was duped by Denjiro, the lower part of their face structure. Then again, Den had that conversation with Franky that genetics can come directly from an ancestor and they may not look like their parents or siblings. There's a chance that some of these similarities are nothing.
Well, Chimney carries Kokoro colors, so I wouldn't rule out the link between them doing the same even with Fishmen weird genetics.
I wouldn't bet on that given Oda was going for a different hair-color at first (so we lose the only connection we have), but I would definitely love if we got introduced to Kokoro's son/Chimney's father, and Sasaki would fit like a glove in there.
p.s.: disappointed with fanartists. Was hoping for a ton of Ulti art with the official colors by now smh
If that’s the case Sasaki is totally fighting Franky
Thinkin' about it, it really made sense to avoid the Scabbards now, since Kanjuro no longer deserves it, and Kyoshiro and Izo are part of the club now.
so next cover could as well portray the 9 Scabbards alignment without being spoilery, but I don't think it'll be limited to only that, it could also have all of the most important local characters fighting to free Wano, so the Scabbies, Yakuzas, Momo, Yamato and Luffy ruining it as usual right in the middle of it, maybe Kaido in the backround doing villain contrast.
with this, we would have covered Tobi Roppos, Supernovas and the Red Scabbards to eventually have the villains team up, except for Orochi r.i.p., and after all of that, we would have a glorious Strawhats Assemble volume cover.
I know it's because I love OP, but it's still crazy to me that I can remember so many character's names and barely forget who they are connected to. Most stories don't have as many characters and I still struggle to remember them.
This is so true, many series I read I forget about lots of characters because there design or how there introduced to the story is just underwhelming, meanwhile here we have six guys who've just been introduced but have a cool enough design, and memorable dialogue and interactions that they've already been engraved in my memory
Most series can't do that, take for instance the last ten Black Clover chapters, they introduced like twelve or so demon magic users, and they were all so bland and generic that I literally can't recall any of them outside of maybe the big three

I believe mermaids can only have fishman children if their partner is a fishman as well. The fish species they represent is the only thing that varies according to their genes.
That was how it was explained at least.
Why would he give Luffy a purple belt? 2 colors man, 2 colors!
Law gets it.
A commenter on Reddit noted that Luffy's purple/orange sash/shorts combo has the same colours as Oden's outfit, which is certainly a nice touch. I'll be curious to see if Oda uses the same colours a third time for Yamato, or if he's going to get something a little more distinct despite matching the style of Oden's clothes.

I agree that it looks freaking horrible with those orange/brown shorts.
Probably worse than the orange vest red shorts combo from Thriller Bark. Orange just doesn't go well with red.
Luffy is wearing the inverse of the colors he wore to save Ace. Red top, orange pants, But a coat and sash this time.
Hey @Captain M are you planning on updating your volume compilation image (on imgur) with 96 and 97? Or are you waiting until volume 100 at this point?

Marineford was yellow top, red pants.

I always considered it orange:
Not saying that it’s an exact color match, but you get the point.

It's clearly yellow though.
Orange was already done in Thriller Bark.
Yeah, changed up quite a bit. I suppose it’s yellow here and in vol 57’s cover, but I used an eyedropper tool to see the specific hex code for the color used on vol 59’s cover — and it’s orange.
Always found it symbolic, though the inverse of his Thriller Bark colors also make sense… given that Luffy is taking down an oni.
Who who's colors is hilarious.
Purple belt reminds me of Kaidou, maybe a boxing ring or karate metaphor idk.
Ulti hair is weird(in a different way)
I didn't mind the belt, it was the cape that for some reason threw me off with the colored look.
Btw, I just realized Luffy is not keeping the cape on his shoulders with sheer will, but with a rope tied around his neck. What a loser, can't even fight gravity with his heart.

That's the rope of his straw hat, which is what allows him to wear at the back of his head.
This is such a good detail. Like he sees everyone doing this cool thing with their capes but for some reason it didn't worked for him so he just pretended to work. So Oda to add this minor stuff that adds characteriz–oh, it's the straw hat, ok.
All the covers together, for anyone interested:
Really enjoy the cover, sure showcases a lot of great characters in an interesting way.
All the covers together, for anyone interested:
That last row has been nonstop good covers.
That last row has been nonstop good covers.
Volume 92 pisses me off though.
Literally can't tell what's going with the panelling.
I would say the weakest covers of the bottom row are 93 and 96 (at least visually). 93 is just a cluster of characters and moments with no noteworthy compositional flair, and while 96 creates a lot of hype just through its choice of characters, I hate that so many of them are just standing there in neutral poses without any interaction or attempt to recreate specific moments. But for the most part, Oda's gone from strength to strength with the covers for ages now, and I still at least like even the unremarkable ones.
Random, but outside of Luffy, Zoro and Law, which Supernova appears on the most volume covers?
4 - Kid
3 - Capone
2 - Apoo, Bonney, Basil, Drake
1 - Urouge and Killer

probably Kid, I believe there was a cover with him on it from pre-timeskip with all supernovas
a punk hazard one with apoo and hawkins
and 2 Wano covers so far
and Bege after him with 3 appearances

Yeah, all of the Supernova are on vol 51.
Kid, Apoo and Basil are on vol 70.
Capone is on 86 and 88. Bonney is alone on vol 90.
Kid is on 92 and 97. Drake finally gets a 2nd appearance on 97. That should account for those 8 Supernova. Maybe Urouge and Killer get more than 1 some day. Basil has been all over this arc, but has missed the covers due to not really being important in the arc.
Hawkins should have been on cover 91, but I guess Oda wanted to send a different message
Best cover since volume 64.

I still don't understand why Nami is all the way up in the cover instead of being at the bottom like Robin.
I still don't understand why Nami is all the way up in the cover instead of being at the bottom like Robin.
From the draft it seems like her and robin are standing with everyone else, but then both of them got cut out and then in again in some weird way
Anyone has a list of cover appearances by character?
It looks like Oda was trying to use those distinct Wano clouds as a way to cut up sections and add entry points characters when there wasn't room for a full figure in volumes 91, 92 and to a much lesser extent 94. It would have made for an interesting theme if he'd kept it up through all the Wano covers, but I guess it just wasn't quite panning out the way he'd hoped for artistically. If he'd given it one more shot I think he might have been able to reduce the clutter and visual noise in volume 93 a bit if he'd tried having a couple of characters (let's say Yasuie and Sanji) pop out of clouds instead of all of them being all the way there.
Jump scan!!
Of course the Flying Six would have oversaturated neon color schemes. The whole cover looks like a box of crayons melted on it, but at least Luffy's pose is badass.
Can we expect SBS soon?
