See, when I look at Cinema Sins, I don't see it as a thing you're supposed to take seriously At All. It's clearly done for a laugh… do people really think the "Flaws" they point out are serious issues? They almost never are...
I'm able to enjoy Cinema Sins specifically because of this... If I thought they were trying to be taken seriously as film critics I wouldn't be watching it.
-
The Sustaining Stupidity video collected interviews, tangent blog posts and reddit AMAs about the fact that they keep a ratio of jokes (divided in nitpicks, ignorance and exageration) to criticism. They vary their stance between parody, satire and criticism in the same interview.
Hell, I enjoy honest trailers, even tho they are guilty of similar… sins.
-
I picked a cinemasins video at random (the first avenger), and skipping through it, within a few minutes "sins" had encompassed
- Comedic riffing on the film
- Questioning the internal logic of the characters/film at every turn
- Pointing out cliches
- pointing out narrative convenience
- A montage ("What the fuck is going on??!!")
The vast, vast majority of the vid seemed to be spent nitpicking, with occasional coarse language for comedic effect I guess?
-
I really enjoyed all the ways this guy pointed out that Jeremy… doesn't really pay as much attention as he thinks he does.
He also changes things slightly to make them seem worse, like that bit of audio at the start of the Mad Max video. -
Basing your humor off trying to be ridiculous about things is something that takes a lot of care for detail, and you need to be good at establishing perspective for it. I didn't really get that from CinemaSins, it usually felt very hard to tell where they were striking the balance between legitimate criticism and attempting to be funny. Going into these things, I didn't really have any reason to understand that they don't actually hate narration in movies, or that they were trying to be comedically obtuse over a "plot hole" rather than actually earnest about it.
I feel Honest Trailers has done a much better job namely because they're very good at keeping things in perspective. Plenty of times they'll take the time to capture why a movie ends up working even as they poke fun of the stuff in it that doesn't make sense, and I keep watching because I actually know what's going to make me laugh and what's going to make me think, and for the most part both of those things are on the table every week. I remember once of the first trailers I saw, the Lord of the Rings one. It basically went like, "strap in for an epic tale of adventure and war, fought over a powerful ring…that does nothing except turning you invisible and letting you see visions". CinemaSins lacks that first part.

Can you point possitive energy at Lindsay? Haven't seen the video but that tweet was haunting.
-
Haven't seen the tweet but here's the video.
-
I don't think she's saying it's an act. The emotion and confession is authentic, but she has to play it off for the sake of it being cathartic. This isn't the first time Lindsay has spoken of her troubles. She has stated before that she has contemplated suicide in the past, and that sometimes the abuse she gets online can be overwhelming. You can't ignore it, because when you're a personality on the Internet, it's everywhere. Doesn't help that everything has been heavy for her in the past two years, what with the massive TGWTG implosion and other world politics becoming unbearably infuriating.
Everything is getting to her, and I don't blame her for feeling like this from time to time. She's noticing the horrible things that have come from our society on the Internet, and it's made her self aware.
On the plus side, she is seeing a therapist. And she has that ever lasting therapist known as Disneyland.
-
While I do agree with everyone that CinemaSins is shit…most of the FanSins are awesome! Like PokeSins.

Let me rephrase it, It didn't felt for me like an act, but it is around a video that says that the youtube personas are an act. Part of this presentation is a curated view of herself, and I'm having a hard time diferenciating if it is the candid side, the cynic side, the functional side or the desperate side.
By human nature, she's probably feeling all of those things, hell I'm both facing imposter sydrome as well, as taking a clandestine day off for petty but kinda valid reasons.
We kinda have to use those masks every day, just because getting our raw self denied hurts terribly, or there are way too many people who don't deserve the time to get angry at them.
But then internet makes too many barriers dissapear, you are famous, but to people who think of you as a friend rather than a personality, and I'm just parroting part of the tweet/video.
So, talking about another layer, Anonimity, right or privilege? Countering toxicity isn't responsability of the content creators, but of the communities and platform developers. Consequences for being awful people? Another filter between the content creators and the internet community? Actual response for real world risks and issues? Separation of characters and actors/content creators? Encourage abandonment of people who you dislike instead of the clickbait way of getting into 30 pages essays/20 minute videos on why JakePaul/MatPat/CinemaSins/Pewdiepie/Sakresian are the worst?

Maybe I'm being naive, but how much is she really required to interact with fans online?

A ton. You have to look at feedback, you have to communicate. You can draw a line and say "I won't look at my YT comments after the first 8 hours" but… if you are making contentfor a community you have to interact with that community, at least some. You can't just drop a thing into the void an leave it be, that doesn't curate or grow the audience.
-

I suppose she needs to have a feel of her audience in order to know how to better entertain them and improve herself.
Buuuut she could have someone as a middlewoman that take the feedback and relay it in a constructive manner lessening possible toxicity exposure. But I'm not how practical or expensive that is.

Was about to make a Santa-christ refference.
Ruined forever, sigh.

God damned internet, everyone is an asshole. I'm terrified of any web site that I like to suddenly be revealed as creepy sexual predators.

I mean, John Cheese was a massive asshole so I'm not too surprised

Okay, why is it that I've seen Macauly Culkin guest starring in two Internet videos this week?
This is the other one, FYI
-
Okay, why is it that I've seen Macauly Culkin guest starring in two Internet videos this week?
Probably because of his new website that he is promoting.
Which is alright to me because both episodes we're legitimately funny. He seems to fit into the RLM crew pretty well. -
Who knew Lindsay Ellis (Nostalgia Chick) got a gig with PBS?
-
Anyone familiar with HBOMBERGUY? Interesting video producer, recently did a good one on flatearthers.
Well, he just did a fundraiser twitchstream for Donkey Kong 64 to benefit the Trans support goup mermaids, and its uh, become quite the thing. Beyond raising more than EDIT: 300.000$ (!!!!) for the charity, some quite notable people have shown up in the stream, including a certain up-and-coming congresswoman
-
That's awesome. I love hbomberguy's videos, first one I saw was the Sherlock analysis.
-
hellyeah hbomb's aces, I think I posted some of his other vids earlier in this thread and the Sherlock vid in the thread for the show here on the forums
-
Yep, I caught the last few hours of the stream last night (Linkara also called in!). I didn't recognize the guy at first, but then I realized I had watched his Sherlock Analysis video previously.
Anyway, great work that hbomber did. I can't imagine playing a game for 57 hours, even with breaks.

At one point in this video, Karl talk about a video that always cracks him up. And they play the video.
Karl completely loses it. And some combination of his reaction, and the video they play, makes me lose it too.
Drunk Friday videos are the best videos.
And the video in question….

Lindsay Ellis' Hobbit duology in three parts has been nominated for a Hugo Award.

So Projared is an abuser, cheater, nude sender and probable sex offender

sigh Why is it always the ones that seem the most innocuous

Because creepy-looking dudes are either repelent enough to not get a girlfriend, or thankful enough to find one and never cross her.
-
He already lost 30 thousand subs, holy shit.
-
It wasn't a hard choice, he hadn't put content in his main chanel in a long time, and one of the last video was to ask money to fix his home or recover his (now ex-)wife's cosplay supplies and costumes, or something like that.
-
Now that PBG decided to enter into the mix by taking a "neutral" stance on this, the worse that can happens is that Jirard, who didn't say anything yet, have to carry all of Normal Boots.
-
I guess twitter is now the socially accepted place to air ones dirty laundry.
-
Honestly, there's no right place to air people's dirty laundry. I think that I sent a man to jail for 1k euros and around 1 year of anguish, so what do I know about propper retribution?

As long as you didn't tweet about it i'm fine with it.

Just checked, I didn't. That year I tried to get a free switch, and cursed my goverment. Like 200 tweets.

Hey, a big youtuber crossover! But without Doug Walker's ego in the way! This might actually be worthwhile!
