@Cyan:
If we're digging up candidates' sordid pasts, Ted Cruz probably hopes that no one mentions that time he killed five people in the late 60s in the San Francisco area.
Or that he loved to masturbate while sharing a bunk bed.

I still have never seen Cruz the same after the whole butter thing.
Butter thing? Wait what?
Nice feel good story about Oklahoma teachers causing turnover in the state's GOP primaries: http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2018/08/teachers-strikes-oklahoma-gop-primaries-house-2018-elections.html
So um…I'll be working the primaries in two weeks. You know, setting up machines, directing voters, that kind of thing. I took two training classes on it and I was surprised when I got the call that asked. Polling site is only about a 20 minute walk from my home, too.
To anyone that did it before, any tips, suggestions, or experiences to share?
(felt like this was the best thread to bring it up)

Nice! I worked the 2016 election (as disastrous as that was).
It'll be a long day but the work isn't complex or difficult or anything. There's usually a core of seniors running things so you'll have good guidance when you need it. Just be polite and patient, and don't make any political comments (of course).
Also, bring snacks. Particularly if you won't be within 5 minutes walking distance of someplace to get food.

Ye, the instructor(s) made a point that new workers are usually paired up with those much more experienced. Hell, I was probably the youngest one in the classes at that.
Also a good call. Thanks!
"Very courageous of McCain to not invite Trump to his funeral! Shows McCain believes in certain values that the president is unable to live up to."
(literal traitor and worst human being Henry Kissinger was invited and was a speaker, so was torturer and war criminal Bush)

Ah but you see, Trump is a certain type of horrible individual, the kind that doesn't care about conserving socio-political norms of washinton and refuses to play washington's game (being courteous to eachother despite stabs in the back, and looking out for politicians' bottom line), which pisses off people like McCain and other establishment types (dems or republicans doesn't matter).
Bush and Kissinger, on the other hand, played Washington's game, and played it well. It may be a facade, but so long as they feign respect for other politicians and keep themselves above the "political frey", they'll still be treated as upstanding individuals. No matter how awful their policies.
It's not about moral values, being a good person, or even agreeing with McCain. Trump broke the rules, insulted everyone to their face, and to top it off is a repugnant person… which means he doesn't get the invite. If he doesn't respect people, they have no obligation to respect him back, essentially.
I'm amazed Kissinger is still alive.
I'm pretty sure even Kissinger is surprised that he's still alive.
When Kissinger dies I will have to mute every political journalist on twitter or else I might break something.
I'm amazed Kissinger is still alive.
You cannot kill what doess not livve.
Or, if you prefer:
That is not dead what can eternal lie.
Kissinger can only die when his final Horcrux (Salvador Allende's skull) is destroyed.
What is dead may never die
I didn't even know he was still alive until he was mentioned in this thread a few months ago.
Just posting this clip cuz why not
Regarding Cruz I always thought this to be one of the pinnacles of feeling embarrassed for someone else:
Also regarding TedCruz: GoFundMe raises thousands to place billboard of Trump's anti-Cruz tweet in Texas
Specifically, in response to Trump coming to Texas to campaign for Cruz, these guys are trying to get a billboard up to display all the times Trump insulted Cruz on Twitter.
Get used to seeing this image many times during Kavanaugh's career.
@Big:

I've got no love for Ted Cruz but I gotta say i found that video entertaining as hell, made me actually like the guy for a whole 20seconds. And ffs it's Ted goddamn Cruz, so that's saying something
Congratulations to Brett Kavanaug for somehow being an even bigger ghoul than Scalia, Gorsuch, Alito and Thomas.
Oh, wow, Mike Capuano got upset in MA-07 by Ayanna Pressley.
Is that Satsuki's district?
No, it's the district that takes up most of the Greater Boston Area. Which is a big and influential district. It's a serious upset. This election is getting interesting.
They haven't called my district yet. paces
If y'all are interested in reading live updates but can't watch the livestream for Kavanaugh's hearing, this article's being periodically updated throughout the day:
It's his second day of the hearing, and he's answering questions today.
Whoa! Hey Badass SnoCone! Good to see ya!
Whoa! Hey Badass SnoCone! Good to see ya!
Hiiiiiii :D
Re: The Hearing: Looks like Kavanaugh's doling out a lot of "No Comment"s which is annoying, albeit kind of expected. I don't really know so far, if this will have the intended effect that Senate Democrats are hoping for.
Damn, they haven't called my district yet because the count is so close. The top two are arguing over who is the winner, but either way it's only like 50 votes difference.
I'm jealous that you even have the chance. I doubt my distrinct's race in going to be any kind of contest.

An anonymous Op-Ed titled from someone within Trump's White House titled "I Am Part of the Resistance Inside the Trump AdministrationI work for the president but like-minded colleagues and I have vowed to thwart parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations."
A specific piece of wording leads at least one person to believe it was written by Vice-President Pence.
“I and everyone else knows Trump is a clear and present danger and should be removed to protect the world…
...but we won’t do that because party over country.”
Well, we always knew Pence was the smarter one, even if he's awful anti-gay.

Lol the moment I read the word "lodestar" I thought.. hmmmmm who the hell ever uses that word? It's the first I've ever seen of it! Turns out Pence uses that word, and only Pence. In multiple prior speeches. Lol Pence musn't be very smart, using a word that's basically his trademark in an anonymous piece is idiotic, to say the least. Unsurprisingly idiotic from someone who wanted to "electroshock the gays". :ninja:
I'm calling Pence being fired from the VP position within a month. Anyone wanna offer a counter bet? Winner gets to gloat about it in their sig.
I don't think the president can fire his VP.
I don't think the president can fire his VP.
Oh. Oh. That changes things.
I suspect we won't be seeing Trump-Pence on the ticket for 2020 though. Anyone wanna take a stab at who might replace him?
I think Trump/Pence will be on the ticket because I’m on the side of people who believe Mnuchin wrote the op-ed.
(Also it goes without saying that I don’t believe there will be an impeachment)
Well, we always knew Pence was the smarter one, even if he's awful anti-gay.
I wouldn't call going to an NFL game and staging a walkout wasting tax payer dollars in the process of doing so smart
or some of the painfully stupid things he did or tried to do as Governor of Indiana
or a guy like himself who loves god and his wife, willingly choosing to associate with a guy whose not religious and has cheated on his wives who knows how many times.
Yes, let's not forget that Pence started an AIDS epidemic in Indiana to own the libs.
I could see this being Pence. He signed up for the job expecting to lose the election and positioning himself to run in 2020. This might be his effort to preemptively distance himself to be ready for either a 2020 run or post-midterm impeachment.
Oh. Oh. That changes things.

To lose his job a VP has to be impeached just like the president. I don't know if a president has ever re-run with a different partner, actually. It's weird to think about, isn't it?

Awful as he is, he's still smarter than Trump. Every body is smarter than Trump.

FDR had John Garner for this first 2 terms, Henry Wallace for the 3rd, then Truman for the 4th and last.
Huh. Well, FDR was always special.

Subtracting resignations and death, it happened the following times:
Lincoln switched from Hannibal Hamlin to Andrew Johnson to appeal to Southern voters.
FDR replaced Henry Wallace with Truman to placate party leaders who were unhappy about Wallace's past as a Republican.
FDR also had John Nance Garner replaced with Wallace because he ran against Roosevelt in the 1940 Convention; Schuyler Colfax was also replaced by Henry Wilson by Grant for running against him for the 1872 Presidential nomination.
Lincoln replaced Hannibal Hamlin with Andrew Johnson for his second term (to the detriment of Reconstruction.) Grant swapped Colfax with Henry Wilson.
It happens, though it's more likely for a VP to die in office or resign.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
FDR replaced Henry Wallace with Truman to placate party leaders who were unhappy about Wallace's past as a Republican.
Wallace was also more friendly with the Soviets than anyone else in the government was comfortable with.
Trump can't get rid of Pence anyway. Pence was picked by Putin. He certainly wasn't Trump's choice.
lol Trump wanted Giuliani or Christie.
Awful as he is, he's still smarter than Trump. Every body is smarter than Trump.
Not if they're working for or with him given his concept of loyalty or willingness to throw people under the bus.
lol Trump wanted Giuliani or Christie.
Seeing the shitshow ticket of Christie and Trump is one of those things we were robbed of.
