There is no politician in American history more cynical than Turtle.

Unless he plans on shutting down the government for months, that's not gonna have an effect this far out.

It's not even day 3 and Trump wants to Republicans blow things up (again)

Is that why Turtleface himself voted for the shutdown (along with Flake, Rand Paul, Graham, and Mike Lee?), hoping no one would notice??? Like is he literally relying on Average Joe Midwest Diner Patron not researching the vote breakdown (I mean fair assumption, but…)? Serious question

I think that was because if the majority leader votes no on something, he can do another vote later on.

Ohhh should've expected arcane senate law malarkey from Turtle Soup.
-
Shummer actually pu tstupid border wall funding on the table to try and get DACA, and he offered to support defense spending funding requested by the White House as well.
And Trump still wouldn't negotiate.
So… yeah.

-
I'm starting to wonder if allowing funding for the border wall isn't a smart idea for democrats, since it's both really really stupid and not actually following up on the campaign promise as promised.
-

But it's also a betrayal to the Democratic base, which could depress turnout in upcoming elections.
-

It's also a ridiculous gigantic waste of taxpayer money on racist propoganda. 18 billion dollars for a wall we don't need that wont actually keep anyone out. WHY.
The wall was one of Trumps biggest campaigns. Not having any progress made on it at all will hurt the republicans way more.
If it has to be used as a bargaining tool to actually save lives, well, thats how inhumane the republican party is right now.
-
The buried lede here is that it wasn't Trump himself who rejected Schumer's last-ditch plea to not kill kids - it was John Kelly.
-
Personal theory on the wall is that, at some point, it will get the funding requested and will still never be built.
-
shows Bush Jr. has a 61% favourability in total and 54% among DEMOCRATS
Now let's regurgitate Bill Clinton's sexual misconduct as this war criminal who murderered and tortured hundreds of thousands of people, as well as destroy the world economy, is completely rehabilitated. Because he was presidential ~

Its easy to forget and whitewash that presidency when Obama fixed most of the fallout and when the current admin is so incredibly awful. So in the moment, its easy to forget.
Actual history books won't be so kind.

Bush came off as the "Aww, Shucks, guys" kind of idiot whereas Trump is more like a Cartman loud and stupid kind of idiot, I suppose.

But will the history books prevent a Republican candidate from succesfully winning a post-Trump election after campaigning on nostalgic Bush-era "moderation"?
-
I think Patton Oswalt describes Bush perfectly in one of his jokes about if he could time travel. He runs his past self through the presidencies of Clinton, Bush, and Obama.
-
Bush's image is also helped by the fact that he had the Penguin looming menacingly in the background at all times; people pin the bad policies on Cheney instead of Bush.

The Koch brothers gave Paul Ryan half a million dollars after the tax bill passed.

Is Cheney the best-defined version of the Evil Chancellor type in American history?

I mean, Kissinger.

John Foster Dulles probably deserves some consideration for that role.

So Chelsea Manning is buddying up to the Alt-Right. Can't possibly see how that turns out badly for her.

Well, if the slurs and misgendering are one thing, expect a lot of "traitor" squawking, unfortunately.
-
Apparently didn't pay attention to Caitlyn Jenner's blind support for Trump.
-
The difference is Jenner was always a Republican. Manning is a Democratic Senate candidate. That on top of the whole "released government secrets" thing will kill her chances of they weren't already stillborn to begin with.
-

Yes but did she know how much Trump was a transphobe (on top of being a racist and a sexist) when he decided that trans people shouldn't be allowed to serve in military? Point I was trying to make is you lay down with fleas don't be too surprised when the fleas start chewing that ass up.

Honest, immediate reaction: Would it have mattered if she did? Jenner was Republican, Trump was Republican, and "DEMOCRATS BAD!!!!!". Even now Republicans who rail against Trump aren't giving much more than lip service.
-
Honest, immediate reaction: Would it have mattered if she did?
Likely not but like with all the other people who voted for him, somehow waking up finding out that Trump is in fact an asshole who should've gotten spanked in the election, it would look less stupid in retrospect.

Dems: we should at least fund CHIP
Reps: NO
Dems: ok, we should pay service members.
Reps: NO
Dems: ok at least we should open the government & work on DACA
Reps: NO
Dems: pay fed employees?
Reps: NO
Dems: what about a bipartisa-
Reps: DEM SHUTDOWN THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT ANYTHING -
Schumer says there's a deal to pass the CR now that McConnell says if there isn't a deal before Feb 8th "The senate will immediately proceed to legislation dealing with DACA."
-
Of course he won't honor any such deal and the media won't bother pointing it out either but will cheerfully blame any future shutdown on Democrats like they were moving to do this time.

–- Update From New Post Merge ---
MCCONNELL: "I think if we've learned anything during this process is that a strategy to shut down the government over the issue of illegal immigration is something that the american people didn't understand."
A decent man you can make a gentleman's agreement with.
Graham-Durbin will pass the Senate, prevented from being put on the floor in the House (as per the pedophile rule) and the Turtle will win once more.
-
CHIP got six years of funding so at least those nine million hostages have been released by the GOP.

I know it's not ACTUALLY the pedophile rule, but I don't know/can't think of what rule you mean by that.
-
Dems: ok, we should pay service members.
Reps: NOAs an active duty member of the military, I'm commanded to still report to work every day as an "essential goverment employee", yet I'm simultaneously not essential enough to warrant payment for said work.
Fuck You Turtle man.
-
I know it's not ACTUALLY the pedophile rule, but I don't know/can't think of what rule you mean by that.
The Hastert rule is basically that the Majority Leader won't allow a bill to be voted on in the House if his own party opposes it no matter how important it is or how easily it would actually pass.
-
I know it's not ACTUALLY the pedophile rule, but I don't know/can't think of what rule you mean by that.
The Hastert rule, named after a former Republican Speaker and convicted pedophile, means that the House won't bring a bill to a vote if the majority of the majority party won't vote for it. It's an excuse used to prevent bills from getting easily passed because the Freedom Caucus (and thus by and large the Republican base) disagrees with it.
The previous immigration reform was killed this way in 2013, when the Gang of Eight bill passed overwhelmingly in the Senate, but was then prevented from getting a floor vote by John Boehner.

CHIP gets six years (which is six more years than I thought possible), people go back to work, and McConnell loses a hostage for February. This is as good as possible considering Schumer's negotiation partners.
-

This is kinda where I'm at. There's not really a winning play for DACA because the GOP and the WH clearly don't want it, and Dems don't have any real leverage. Even for a shutdown, the GOP would just bury their heels while the media puts the blame on Dems.
-

So they didn't get any money for the wall right? Isn't this working out towards the Democrats' favor? News articles only came out minutes ago.

President John Kelly rejected Schumer's offer for wall (or vague "border security") funding and it was never implemented into the budget.

They made the exact same deal they could've made on Friday, when they were grandstanding about protecting the DREAMers. Except now they went through a news cycle where they were blamed for the shutdown AND for losing the standoff. And alienated the base.
-
Uncle Chuck really isn't a very good negotiator, or at least doesn't understand the most passionate parts of the Democratic base that well.
-
Uncle Chuck really isn't a very good negotiator, or at least doesn't understand the most passionate parts of the Democratic base that well.
He was also stupid enough to openly say he is willing to pay for the wall. Now that is the LEAST that Republicans are going to demand in the next round of negotiations.
-
They made the exact same deal they could've made on Friday, when they were grandstanding about protecting the DREAMers.
The deal on Friday by all accounts did not have the CHIP extension (which according to "dumbass left" twitter, was something the Republicans already wanted and the reason it was allowed to languish for months is because SHUT UP NEOLIBERAL). The Republicans now have a timer to deal with DACA or else the government gets shut down again - and McConnell publicly said that DACA would get a vote by then (before this deal, Turtle wouldn't even consider it), meaning he takes the hit if/when that vote never comes and we get Shutdown 2. The GOP just let their only other hostage go. The Dems lost nothing in this deal that wasn't already lost.
-
@Cyan:
The Dems lost nothing in this deal that wasn't already lost.
I don't know about that.
I'm seeing(and agreeing with) plenty of distaste for Schumer's negotiation. I think he's failing to realize -unlike many of his colleagues- that thousands of Americans are in genuine panic over whether or not they may be deported, or have their families torn apart. This was his chance to make a hardline stance against the GOP. Oh how quickly he flipped on his #TrumpShutdown mentality. Is there good in this negotiation? Relatively. But simply pushing what is happening now back a little bit, while giving the GOP a chance to fight again over letting Dreamers stay.
If he wasn't going to have a hardlined stance on this matter and demand an absolute answer to the question of the legality of Dreamers in this shut down, why the fuck should anyone take him seriously if it comes to this again?
This is honestly likely good enough for Trump right now. You know that, while he'll still want to deport Dreamers, he's going to rationalize this negotiation as Schumer trying to save face after him and the rest of the Democrats caused a shutdown with everyone blaming them. It just gives more for his base to feed into. The far right is still going to maintain that Dreamers be deported. Many Republican Politicians have put the blame squarely on Democrats. With them simply pushing this issue back a bit so that they can keep the Government running, Schumer is pretty much telling the world "We really care about these people and their right to be here. But we got other shit to do, so we'll deal with this in a bit. But we'll be tougher on them next time, you'll see!".
Chuck needs to stop being concerned about alienating people that buy into Trump's rhetoric and blame the Democrats for the shut down and actually back the thousands of people that desperately need this matter of their citizenship to be resolved. If the Democrats want any chance of winning in 2018 or even 2020, they need to actually resist the GOP and be just as much spanners in the works as the GOP was during Obama's term.
Especially given the fact that this is one of the few times they actually can, given they are not the majority. If they're going to squander one of the few times they can actually negotiate something their would-be-voters want, why the hell do they think that people will have faith in them going forward?
