The fact that it's a Sanders/Biden plan is exactly why he's doing it. Hillary lost, so the pundits decided that "identity politics" is a dead end strategy. Plus Berniewouldawon and he said the white working class is the Dems' core constituency. Add to that Northam being blasted by the press for originally calling out Gillespie's campaign (racial tensions ON BOTH SIDES) and the dude is basically forced to move to the right, even though this Republican strategy of driving Dems into the mud with them never ends well for the Democrat.
I think it was dumber of the DFA to make a big stink about it and for the former Democratic governor to refuse to endorse him.

Of course, it doesn't help that so many so-called liberals cheerfully carry water for the GOP by getting outraged over such nonsense.
I mean, the thing that is without a doubt true is that the DNC was an incompetently run shitfest and DWS had to let go years earlier (the 2014 midterms would've been a good reason for firing).
