One Piece 864: The Vinsmoke Family Slaughter Plot
-
DAIFUKU IS SO COOL!
-
Judge's crying is an effective way to remark and emphasize the inhumanity of his sons. It's not like if a character is shown crying once, especially in a situation of imminent death like that, that would instantly ruin his character (not that Judge is that great of a character, on the contrary the whole characterization of the Vinsmoke's family has been a bit lacking).
Yeah, and I think that's great. So far he's just been a massive dick and adding that part where he's emotionally torn up is enjoying, because he deserves it. And it also gives him something else than just being an angry, prideful old bastard. Hopefully Sanji will point it out later in the Vinsmoke comeuppance.
I agree with this.
-
Solid bridge chapter, Brook continues to be great.
Judge just pussying out is kinda funny.
-
I'm not talking about crying alone, but the fact they got caught that easily.
And let's not pretend Oda is writing a dramatic masterpiece here. Judge's 180 turn feels totally awkward in light of everything we've seen from him so far. And if Oda decides to show his more emotional side in another flashback, so be it, but it doesn't change what it looks like now. Awwwwwkward.
If Oda wants to make readers more sympathetic to Judge, he could have done it in a less simplistic way.
I don't think he is trying to make us feel sympathetic towards him. I think he's trying to make us gloathe in his misery. Pudding however, is a cat of a different coat. But I really hope she just remains Yandere.
-

Why not both to a degree?
We know Sanji will end up helping him, and before he does that, Oda needs to awaken at least an ounce of sympathy towards him among readership. It's a simple but effective method.
I'd just prefer he wasn't such a crybaby over it. You can express grief in many ways. You can also not get caught by syrup like a goddamn moron.
-
Even if this is an unexpected turn of events for Judge (He really, really, reaaalllyy deserves to die if he has no backup plan), his reaction make him look pathetic as hell. Compare to Luffy's reaction to Pudding's reveal in the book prison.
They may be in similar situations, but they are not the same people. Luffy has always been the tenacious underdog who won't lose his drive as long as there's a way, even if that way is as extreme as ripping his arms off. Meanwhile, Judge has sat comfortably on his throne, surrounded by super soliders who obey his every command. He's an entitled, selfish brat who always gets what he wants. So yeah, he is pathetic, but this is the intention here. One guy we root for, the other we don't.

I'm pretty sure Oda isn't trying to portray him sympathetically; Reiju's "I told you so" thoughts after the brothers prove to be useless pretty much affirms it. Judge is getting what's coming to him, his technology and achievements that he has prized so much have failed him, and it's up to the weakling Sanji to save the day.

I'm pretty sure he is. Can't have one of the main characters rescuing unlikable evil despot scientist. Now that he's shedding crocodile tears it's not that easy to hate him any more. He's suddenly a person in distress. The guy hoped to realize his dreams only to end up being betrayed by allies. He's like Brownbeard or Bellamy now. Right now he's not an enemy, but someone who needs help.
-
So will sanji awaken the emotions in his bros or judge will have to do it the experiments way?
-
Why not both to a degree?

I'd just prefer he wasn't such a crybaby over it. You can express grief in many ways. You can also not get caught by syrup like a goddamn moron.
The intention was never to give Judge sympathy by having Sanji save him, it served entirely to reflect on Sanji's character and how the Vinsmoke men are going to look like morons when they not only get rescued by a "weakling", but are only going to get rescued because of empathy, an emotion they view as wasteful and unnecessary. Then, maybe after the thought, Judge can realize where he went wrong and possibly go out on a bit better note.
Also, I don't see how their entrapment makes them look like morons. One moment they're sitting down watching the Straw Hats attempt to rescue Sanji, the next they're trapped. I don't see how anyone, save for maybe Katakuri, would be able to predict and avoid that.
-
So I got told there was no chapter, after i said there was.
At least i got a surprise.

In a Theon Greyjoy way? I don't really think that's necessary in the first place. Sanji had already decided to save them from the "you don't turn your back on family, even if they do"-perspective. I really think this is just pure fanservice and the set up for Sanji basically getting a moment to use all the insults he had hurled against him, towards Judge later.

Misunderstanding. I mean Oda doesn't want to have Sanji rescue an nonredeemable villain, so he makes him show his weak side.
And as always, you're too forgiving to plot convenience. When required, people in OP have sharp senses. When not, they have reflexes of a dead horse. And we're talking about improved humans here.

"The crew of my son whom I forced to act as a pawn in my plans is attempting to take him back by force, heavy-hitters of Big Mom's crew started fighting them all around, Big Mom herself started behaving unpredictably and killing her people. There's only one thing we can do right now - sit there and wait for all of this to end." No, they're not morons, they are pretty smart indeed.
-

Well that's the thing. They shouldn't be sitting down watching. Any warrior who's worth their salt ought at the very least to be on alert the moment gunshots start ringing, cakes exploding, strangers battling… I could understand that someone completely helpless would be caught off-guard, but if none of the aforementionned could cause the Vinsmokes to so much as pay closer attention to their surroundings - and maybe realize that syrupt is creeping up your legs and the Charlotte siblings are looking at you in a funny way, not to mention Big Mom just killed a couple guys right out of the blue - then it's a wonder anyone ever considered them to be any sort of threat to begin with.
-
@Kaido:
Given what Daifuku and Oven are doing, I'd say that's expremely unlikely. Yes, a major aspect is the size, since most of the Big Mom Pirates are your usual New World pirates. Luffy, who's a step above that, would be stronger than a lot of them, and people who are closer in strength to him would likely be able to defeat most of her crew members. We're not going to get a crew where all the members are as strong/stronger than Luffy individually. But they are most certainly a threat together, given the ride of hell they put Luffy through with their Devil Fruit powers during his fight against a ton of them. And that's not even mentioning the Sweet Commanders, who can actually give Luffy a tough one on one fight.
It's just like Kaido and the Beasts Pirates; we know that Kaido and his Disasters are the top echelon, way above most New World Pirates. In his employ, though, are average New World pirates. Look at "Iron Boy" Scotch, the first member of the crew we ever saw. He's a competent New World pirate, able to wreak havoc on islands like, say, Randolph, Diesel, and Amande, with his sick machine gun. But Super Rookie Caribou managed to eventually defeat him. Same with the Red Hair Pirates, they got a guy named Rockstar who's far below the standard New World bounty and whom no one has even heard of. And who knows how many Whitebeard lackeys got their asses killed in Marineford.
So pretty much a size thing then. BM's crew without the advantage of dogpiling just doesn't come across as that threatening to me.
But i guess that's just an effect of Luffy progression and acquiring of such overpowered allies.
-
@Kaido:
Pretty cool chapter. I made it a bit too grandiose in my head thanks to spoilers, but Perospero's unexpected cameo and speech when the Vinsmokes got trapped made that scene for me. Delicious deaths indeed.
Also, not sure whether to be angry at Daifuku for being an absolute asshat for smacking his sister around, or be a bit happy that he carried out some of the audience's frustrations without Pudding (though I did like her in this chapter, given that she very clearly still wants to do her job and wasn't crying about it to boot.)
My suspension of disbelief that Big Mom hasn't gone nuts yet is a little strained, given that Judge's and Perospero's conversation seemed to go longer than that, but it's far from the first time time has been stretched recalls Alabasta bomb
I figured big mom being weighed down by different things to freak out about cause her reaction to be delayed plus the scene with nami, carrot and chopper talking about the 3 seconds was before the conversation so I think its been more than 5-10 seconds in time
-
Luffy looks kinda bad so far. Needed jimbei to rescue him from katakuri, brook to ruin the picture instead of him and now capone sitting on top of him, while jimbei has to hold the bm pirates alone. He sure could do more then this to help the plan.
And sanji looks kinda bruised, bleeding from his small clash with Daifuku's genie.
-
I kinda agree on the part about them just sitting there. It could have been rectified really easily, by just having a few token panels of them getting up like "WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?!" or whatever. Or that we somehow got a hint that they were covered in candy this whole time. It's not a gamebreaker for me personally. I can sort of accept that they were doing all of this off-screen and that it just wasn't focused on. But I still get the feeling the anime will fuck up this part horrifically bad.
-
-
Judge strikes me as "book smart people dumb" but it's odd so many people are bothered by this like real people dont exist like this in the world.
I love the idea that judge is a perverted sanji (aka perverted in the sense of twisted version of him)
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Where he is jobbing exactly ?
To anyone with common sense, nobody. Taking damage =/ Jobbing
-
As fun and awesome as this chapter was, the way Judge was handled is disappointing.
Clinging to the hope that it's an act!
He just saw his dream crushed out of nowhere, the dude has acted like an asshole to his kids, to achieve that dream, it was destroyed in seconds and he can't even defend himself, all he could do is cry in desperation.
-
Well when I look at Sanjis enemy now..
Hmmmm..
http://readms.net/r/one_piece/864/4224/8
If I would shave that Genie, give him glasses and exchange his weapon with bamboo I would get Vergo
-
It is kind of weird that Genie is coming out of his crotch.
-
That was satisfying. Now if Big Mom could just snap Niji in half like a breadstick, all would be well in the world.
-
its funny that he seems to have to weave it out the whole time
oven reminds me of someone out of zatch bell.
-
@Long:
To anyone with common sense, nobody. Taking damage =/ Jobbing
People might not note that Sanji here http://readms.net/r/one_piece/864/4224/12 was distracted by his father scream and got hit on left side while during next few moments he is still looking at his father crying on next panel-page http://readms.net/r/one_piece/864/4224/13
Then Sanji is absent for 2-3 pages and we see that he got hit on left side of his head http://readms.net/r/one_piece/864/4224/16
So it was only because he was distracted.I have 30th birthday 1 and half month from now and I have extra hope for Oda to deliver with Sanji showing

Looking forward to the next series of cover pages. I have expressed my thoughts on if the Fleet will show up in Wano. I do not think so. Mainly because it would be too soon from their appearance in Dressrosa[story time]. There are enough allies to handle already, and the Strawhats tackling a problem together ever since they split up.
If Blackbeard does show up in Wano, then I could see the giant squad showing up, in a prelude to Elbaf and show their 'combined might' and rescuing the crew after they are exhausted from fighting the Beast pirates, while the Whitebeard pirates and Weevil fight Blackbeard off. Not to mention that when the fleet was formed, Luffy was already aware that he was fighting Kaido and did not ask them for their help. Why would that be? When the fleet shows up, it will be literally because the Strawhats asked for help.
I like how little details like Brook not using Brulee's power, and using a mask to bypass the awareness of everyone, even Katakuri because indeed, all the other Luffy's transformed by Brulee were animals. I am surprised Brook did not add "…even though I do not have a face", however his humor is on point. "A long time ago". Great comedy pieces.
skips Pudding's part.. although enough with Sanji's cheesy one liners. We get it, he is so kind!~
Daifuku is really interesting. I think that this has been the arc where I have questioned the origin of devil fruits the most. Considering what we have seen recently, I wonder if they truly are from nature. If that is armament on his power, that is deadly. Not sure what the restrictions are in terms of movement. Glad Ceasar is following the plan. Is that armament on Jimbe?, what a boss to talk and fight against 4 combatants and giving tips to others.
Luffy's and Brook interaction is great. I like how Perospero corrects the name of the plan to be massacre given that they are all aware now. This is big news! Judge was a crybaby!. And so many wondered about the integrity of Big Mom by having a public execution, and that Pudding would have to alter everyone's memories. Look at that, they don't even care, they are mocking the Vinsmokes, as expected of the underworld bosses.
It was a weird addition to see Sanji yell about if they will make it. Bege, Jimbe and Pedro vs Katakuri. I like that match up. Smoothie might come in to assist. Fun times.
-
Oh, I just realised. The Vinsmoke brothers are all imune by Big Mom's ability. They have no emotions, that includes fear. They can't get their souls ripped out.

are you at least glad she tried to kill him again instead of turning just like that

So? She can still burn their asses with Prometheus.

really one badass chapter, well done oda <3
-
These Vinsmokes are pretty pathetic without their gear. I thought they would be a bit stronger considering they were genetically engineered. Don't they have a steel exoskeleton or something?
-
I wondered how it feels to be called a piece of meat by a "candy ass" like perospero.
Sad times for judge I like the reaction, I still think he deserves this but I dont think his actions are that unreasonable or make him some pansy. We never see villains after luffy kicks there ass but im sure judge cant be the only manly dude who cried after his dreams were smashed
-

Well, only the kids have those. Also the kids aren't pathetic at all. Just the father.
-
Atleast the kids had the decency to strike a good pose to die in.
The nonchalant arms crossed look really does work for an execution.

Well, Enel actually fulfilled his dreams so he is quite happy, crocodile actually didn't give a s***, Hody is dillusioned and still angry and cranky and probably died a few days later due to old age. I really can't see Arlong crying, and Buggy cries all the time.
Moria could have been crying. -

"I've been dead for a long time", delivered so matter of factly as to be almost profound. Brook continues to get all the best lines
- Lots of things are happening, yet the pacing feels slow. After the portrait broke I was expecting all hell to break loose instantaneously, yet Big Mom is still stunned a full chapter later. Not even welling up her rage or anything, she just stands in shock. It's not entirely unthinkable, but really lessens the impact of last chapter's cliffhanger.
I felt the same way. As a transitory chapter, it feels very clumsy in its execution and placement; this is the point where you’d expect everything to explode into action, yet things seem caught between all-out brawl and bracing for impact. While Sanji is fighting for his life the Straw Hat clones are pretty much already out of the picture, Big Mom is paralyzed (yet again removing any chance to see her in actual combat), the Vinsmokes are cornered offscreen and Nami/Chopper/Carrot are on standby. Jinbe and Pedro tangle with some Big Mom crewmembers, yet can instantly disengage off-panel to get to Capones aid, in a rather jarring transition. Even though every BM crewmember should’ve converged on Luffy instantly Capone can just sort of casually set him free, whereupon Luffy casually picks up the picture frame. Theres a real lack of urgency to the chapter, as if Oda has too many balls in the air to structure it properly; I mean, we don’t even see how Brook gets decapitated, it just sort of happens.
Beyond that, as for the content itself, the Sanji/Pudding scenario seems like a lost cause, and hope is slim that the Vinsmoke will do anything to pay off their buildup (Ichijis introductory spreads in particular doesn’t seem like they’re worth much now). So I don’t care about saving Sanji, his family, or taking down Big Mom for the sake of itself. I’m putting all my hopes in Big Moms relation to Caramel becoming a focal point to rally my interest in this climax behind.
-

Moria could have been crying.Well I mean the thing im trying to stress is that tears arent just because of a sadness, IE you dont always become a lump of sad when you cry, and he's probably pissed off as well. It kind of speaks to his ambitions, croc wanted alabasta but it wasnt his real dream so he was able to counter it, enel got what he wanted, moriah yes, lucci evidentally got back on the horse and trained to get better, with resoluteness. Doflamingo was always a mystery on how much did he really care plus his dream is chaps and he can still see it.
There's few examples because oda doesnt revisit villains after they are defeated because he likes to keep unlikeable people unlikeabke and you cant show a villain give up in a fight in a shonen manga either lol
-
I hoped Reiju would have said her thoughts outloud to Judge, but Perospeoopeorospoeorpopsoeoosssoeore was savage enough.
-
I'm not so sure how to feel towards Judge's sudden tears of betrayal right now. On one hand, he totally had this coming to him with how he turned his children into tools to benefit for personal gain, coupled with Reiju's "this was bound to happen, one way or another". While on the other, this juxtaposes with Sanji's feeling of weakness when compared to his brothers, plus the fact that his kids had their emotions sucked right out of them and don't even value their lives while Judge is the only one kicking and screaming for his life, and it kinda makes me feel bad for the poor SSJ3 Vinsmoke.
-
I wonder what the official translation of the Hoya Hoya no mi will be. Puff Puff Fruit? Genie Genie Fruit?
As for Judge, sounds like he got a bad case of hybris. He's got the best gear and technology, and a handy clone army, but if you take away all his toys he's nothing more than a weak old man who thought he could stand beside the yonko. He probably doesn't have the genetic enhancements of his children either, so he's extra pathetic.
-
What do the mum kids expect of their mother rampage ? Do they really think she will not snap if they capture the Strawhats ? I don’t know, I find perospero attitude strange as if nothing will happen
-
Match ups this arc:
Big news Morgans vs Old news Tamago(count chiken). Bird race vs bird fruit user
Genie fishman Aladin vs genie fruit user Daifuku.
I trust sanji and Pedro can go find something else.
-
Cabbage's ship is amazing, I couldn't expect less from the 1st captain of the Grand Fleet:wub:
Katakuri all over the place, while Smoothie…. well picking her nose or whatever...
Big Mom does really look like a child with her outfit, there are panels on which you can't help but think of a small fat girl wearing a ridiculous big hat, it perfectly goes with how her childish personality is.
Pudding totally reminds me of Launch from DB with how she acts xD, she needs to leave Totland to have her around in some cover story or sailing with someone else.
I like how Bege was totally right about being both outnumbered and likely to get crushed if the plan goes bad, Daifuku alone had Sanji busy, seemed like Pedro couldn't do shit against Oven and Jinbe said he couldn't stand too long those 3 dudes he was fighting at once, and that's not even half the members of the family. I mean, even if they release the Vinsmokes(as if candy alone could really stop iron people) it still seems like things are on the BM pirate's side, all they can really do is escape.
However, Katakuri's pale face seems to be hinting right the direction Greg's theory points out, BM will slaughter people indiscriminately once she goes mad, family members or not, doesn't matter, she will go shit on everyone equally, so from the point she goes mad, the best thing to do for all people present is a general alliance with everyone participating on it, all what's left for now, is the Launchers failing at taking her down.
-

They are expecting her to go into "screaming then feeling exhausted" mode, not her "hunger tantrum" mode. The first one would render everyone immobile because of her scream, but she isn't dangerous while in it unlike the in second case. From the looks of it, though, I wouldn't be surprised if she went berserker and everyone has to join forces in order to stop her (with Sanji eventually managing to do so by baking a new cake as many expect).

Smoothie has "Kizaruduringmarinefordwar" syndrome
-
Do you want a list of events before Perospero attacked them? Usopp will evade that. They are pathetic.
Really curious as to what events as they just found out this chapter that they're being targeted. And the simple fact that they have little care means they have little care for their own lives. They assessed the situation, realized it was futile and accepted death.
-
Katakuri all over the place, while Smoothie…. well picking her nose or whatever...
Yeah, useful Katakuri, he does jackshit besides being startled by his visions and helping the enemy with his pale face.
-
Every now and then i realize that when you guys are talking about this "katakuri" fellow you are actually talking about the starch man.
