I feel like I’m right about this. Some great developments.
I know a lot of people are taking desires literally, but it just doesn’t make sense for me. I don’t definitively think I’m right but it’s about 70-80% how I feel.
An epithet is a nickname or descriptive term that's added to someone's name that becomes part of common usage. For example, in the name Alexander the Great, “the Great” is an epithet.
So in this case, "They don't need to be calledthe Strong Samurai" or "The Stubborn Samurai". If they keep getting beaten it doesn't matter what you call them because it's meaningless. So, what are you Luffy? Are you actually strong or just calling yourself tough?

I get it after your explanation and context of what kaido is saying but that just sounds…weird.
When were the samurai given an epithet as a group? Is the context supposed to be when luffy says the samurai are strong?
Edit: never mind about answering. I get the gist, but the epithet stuff just seems to be worded weird for me.
As a non Japanese speaker, can somebody explain why the official chose to go with epithet which simple just means title or nickname? I’m more confused about what the saying even means now.
Even though it's usually best to follow in-story material to get an understanding of who will or won't join, I still wonder how much of a conscious effort Oda is trying to make of keeping people guessing if Yamato will join or not. It feels different compared to the days back then when Franky was on Chapter 377's cover, which was the third chapter of Enies Lobby, and makes it seems as if Franky is part of the Straw Hats even though Franky didn't join before Enies Lobby.
It’s kind of a hindsight thing. While he was out there not everyone agreed he was going to Join at the time. However with that argument, you could argue that Yamato being the only ally (not including ace cause dead) to be on the big picture of the trio of volumes (99,100,101) could also be a similar situation if she joins later.
I’m surprised but not surprised y’all argued so much over whether Yamato would be an apprentice. There are things we’d like to happen and things that are set up. Yamato being an apprentice is kinda ridiculous guys.
Regardless I’m not here to argue for or against it but Yamato imo is being set up to be an oden similar. That info will prob lead Yamato to writing about their journey. Whether that’s on the straw hats or not. Yamato will want to see the dawn that’s in the log book. Add on, whatever task Oda wants a new member to serve he’ll fit it in.
A musician isn’t needed. Any ol pirate can sing a shanty
An archeologist isn’t needed, but oda fit it in as it’s a major plot point to his story.
Shipwrights don’t travel with the ship.
Captains actually know how to sail their ship, luffy knows nothing.
Zoro is just a combatant, the whole crew are combatants.
A chef isn’t needed, anybody who can cook (Nami) would fit the role.
Apart from navigator and doctor: two actually dedicated roles, nothing else is really important
A helmsman is needed but you see how long we went without an official one.
Ussop is also the sniper but a sniper isn’t needed. He use to be the cannoneer but ussop hasnt used a sunny cannon since almost ever (can’t recall) so another position that oda just uses.
Yeah, he mentioned the scene with Onimaru would be confusing, but that scene with Hyogoro ended up creating the same effect I think.
I agree with the others that Ushimaru being his father was kind of too on the nose, but I figured One Piece was doing the "everyone is related to important people" thing now so I went with it. I'm a bit more interested in what all this means now though.
I don’t think it’s the same effect. Yes we got the gist that zoro looks like him but the fact that the dog didn’t even recognize the fact that zoro looked liked his owner when he spent probably the majority of his life together yet two other people did was a mistake in writing.
I don’t think it’s a HUGE mistake but it’s a mistake nonetheless.
While appreciating the Yamato showcase, I still find it interesting they didn't feature a main character on there for the promotion.

The flashback is 20 years ago, right? If Ushimaru (as last seen in that cave with Yamato) aged 20 more years…that doesn't equal Kozaburo's age. Hell, Kozaburo supposedly died of old age like, what, 10 years ago? And he left Wano...50 years ago? I would say Ushimaru is in his 20s, 30s during the flashback. That's (more or less) when Zoro was born (he's 19? 20? I always forget). For him to be his grandpa. . .nah. I don't see it.

They weren't that young. based on what they said, 20 years they'd be too old. so they're probably around 50. Yasui was around that age too and they would be around Oden's father's age. grandfather would fit more it seems
Carrot imo was a good candidate for the next nakama before wano. Her candidacy hasn’t really fallen but more so stagnated. She kinda came to wano and just fell in line with the rest of the minks. However you still see that she sticks to the crew a lot which shows how close she is compared to everybody else. She even was a part of the whole welcoming Jinbei hug
Saying All that, Yamato has surpassed all of the candidates to me. It’s been mentioned before but the fact that Yamato WANTS to join luffys crew is such a huge factor that some people are just bypassing. Yamato’s belief in luffy and having never met luffy is a huge huge deal that’s also being overlooked by some. There’s also her connection to ace (who was supposed to free her and then both go on adventures together. Ace is dead and she’s turned herself to luffy over the past 2 year. So there’s my stance on Yamato.
Let’s come back to carrot again. Her candidacy was also strong that I find myself hard throwing it out. Carrots story doesn’t feel complete either so I can see a possible 2 scenarios. She joins the straw hat fleet. I would def like this if she doesn’t join the crew. She has the ties to luffy still and it adds another race to his horde.
If not that then become a retainer for momo. Similar to Neko and inu. She still needs to find that purpose/dream that Pedro left for her.
