@AfroSamurai:
Also, am I really to believe it's THAT hard to get proper ID to every US citizen? Really? I'm not talking bloody gun permits or driving licences. Proper ID. Proof of nationality. Not Passports, but ID cards of some sort.
Just for context in this part, let me illustrate the process I had to go through in Texas to get one.
I was in Houston at the time. The DMV that you had to go to in order to get an ID or to take a Driver's License examination was about an hour and so drive away from downtown Houston, considerably more time if you count in traffic, even more time if for some reason you didn't have a car.
Oh yea, I didn't have a car. And even if I did, it's not like I could drive it there, because, you know, the not having a license thing. So I had to ask someone else to take me there.
Now let's talk about their hours, looking them up right now:
8:00AM - 5:00PM, every day except weekends, 6:00PM on Tuesdays
Those are working hours for EVERYONE
Now, at the time I was a student, and even then it was difficult to arrange the optimal time to go since their hours are the same hours as pretty much everything. Eventually I was able to outright skip class, get someone to drive me there, and then while there it was a several hour wait before I finally got what I needed.
Compile all these issues and consider who it affects more. The economically comfortable folks whose mom/dad can drive them to the DMV and hang out with them while they get what they need, or the people who cannot afford to get out of work pretty much an entire day to do this, much less get someone else they know to do the same exact thing.
And I'm sure this isn't even the worst-case scenario. I've heard of cases where the DMV hours are sporadic and people go to the DMV and find it's randomly closed.
I do agree that expecting ID from every citizen makes a ton of sense. What doesn't make sense is how absurdly complicated some states make it to deal with the DMV in any way whatsoever. It's extremely backwards. It is also very clear from the rhetoric of the people who demand it in congress that they have no fucking clue what they're talking about when they demand people just get an ID if they want to vote, since they also don't make propositions to make the process easier.
