Does Luffy even know where he's going? I don't think he has an idea of where Sanji is and is just running around looking for him.
Chapter 852: The Germa Failure

And again, there is a mirror in Reiju's room. Oda really puts them everywhere since there is a mirrorworld around.
Also classic fairy tale: mirror mirror in the wall. The fact that Bropper and carrot Need to ask the mirrors is a nod to snow white's bad queen/witch. -
@DEE:
Really? SHUT UP.

The wording on page 13 is interesting here: "These are emotions that he must not have!"
Implying, on the topic of the Vinsmoke kids showing plenty of emotion to date, that it was specific feelings that were engineered out of them. So we can either assume that "emotion" was meant to be interpreted as "empathy," or that it meant specifically feelings of pity, sympathy and remorse. Or we can take the translations we have at face value and try to ignore the discrepancy.
-
Sora is amazing… damn it this story touched me... And now I'm really curious what Sanji will do... Simply letting the Vismokes die (which they should) won't bea n option after hearing that his mother has given her life dor him having a heart... I doubt if would be in her sake to let them die.
Still curious of course if Sora is related to the Sora story...
-

Also classic fairy tale: mirror mirror in the wall. The fact that Bropper and carrot Need to ask the mirrors is a nod to snow white's bad queen/witch.Interesting. Oda didn't draw them in the prison or in the poneglyph room so it is certainly will have its purpose

So, Reiju is the less impressive kid, what a surprise -_- she is not modified from birth like Ichi/Ni/Yonji, nor is the great human born to balance it like Sanji. She is just halfassedly between those two opposites. Obviously…
Still, a good chapter. This arc is finally starting to pick my interest again. Loved the cover too.
Well it's basically equivalent to your first kid being your "experiment" in terms of how you raise them, though in Judge's case of course it was all about scientific progress. Reiju had obedience but still had empathy, so Judge improved upon the formula with his next four sons.
-
Sola…Sora. Could be daughter of sora, got together with judge and she died, sora blamed judge and that's why they enemies in the comic strip? Also, sora could be vegapunk.
Anyway, this arc can go anywhere. I wonder why potato starch still wasn't introduced. Name drop- introduction distance is way longer then for smoothie or cracker.
-
Im curious What does judge have against emotions

So far, the Totland Arc has been in my opinion on par with Zou as the best arc after the time skip. The setting has been unique and freaky, Big Mom is a very interesting character with a beautifully crafted set of morals, we had a good twist with Pudding and there's still a feeling of uncertainness how this arc will be resolved with many questions still open.
What Oda did now regarding the handcuffs won't take away my enjoyment of the arc, but it maybe will leave a mark on it.
The main problem I have with this is the casual "Oh-and-by-the-way"-style in which it was revealed. I think Oda took a wrong narrative choice in here, especially in conjunction with Reiju's encouraging words. It would have been a superior option in my opinion to let Sanji hang a little bit longer in his personal Trauma Conga Line. Would have kept the reader guessing in a positive way, instead of sacrificing the grim outlook we had at the end of 851 for a quick solution. The general tone, especially of the end, is far too enthusiastic. It just drains away some of the tension. This is all the more disappointing because this arc had some interesting choices especially regarding the outline. Up to this point, Oda managed to keep alive a mysterious tone, some kind of a big question mark how all this will eventually be resolved. For instance, we won't have something like this in Wano. The moment we set foot in Wano we will know, that even if Wano will be even longer than Dressrosa, the Beast Pirates will finally be defeated in a huge battle. The general outline will be clear from the bginning. This is something which is at least a little bit different in this arc. It would have been in the reader's interest IMO to keep us guessing about as much as possible for as long as possible. If the handcuffs are fake (taking away some of the threat level) and Reiju being Sanji's "Ray of light" again, why not reveal it only at the height of the wedding?
And now I feel a little bit like a professional nagger. Am I too harsh?
-
Does Luffy even know where he's going? I don't think he has an idea of where Sanji is and is just running around looking for him.
-
Wait, so the Sora from the comic is Sora, Sanji's mother?! What? When do we get more info on that? It's cruel to just throw that casually and then not expand anything upon it…
-
Reminds me when i fuck up in the stealth games and go rampage and attack everyone
lol sometimes I did it too, next step was throwing the hardware outside the window

I dunno about that. I mean Oda could just had Reiju keeping the keys of the bracelets with her and giving it to him instead of telling they were fakes.
The situation is not too different from those cuffs at Punk Hazard, but that aside I think Oda could have condensed more of the Mom Talk.
But still, I cannot think anything big for him to add in this chapter that would not be better putting in another full chapter.
-
Sanji is so lame and is almost entering into the dangerous territory of Rebecca level patheticness and hopelessness. Its as if he is a new comer in the crew and does not remember his identity, memory since the start of the series. As soon as knowing about the fake bracelets and the bluff of killing Zeff he should be getting his sorry ass and go feed luffy at the earliest and start kicking some ass if he even has/remembers an iota of his personality.
For Reiju trying her best to force him to gtfo and for him to remain in a pussy depressed mindset is so garbage to watch. Where is Mr Prince the badass cook and the person who is gonna be the most troublesome among the strawhats?
You mean he shouldn't act like a human normally would after learning that his mom basically made the ultimate sacrifice to help him actually live as a person? That's especially ironic.
-
-
Reading this arc is like falling in love with One Piece all over again. I have butterflies.
Sanji's mom was the bomb. -
Guessing who is in the 4th floor infirmary…
The guard says to the doctor "Be careful.."... -
In my opinion there will be no wedding. I think SH will escape. BigMom will get furious. One of the last panels will be when she says: "at least do we have that treasure box", and opens it.
-
I liked the subtle touches here and there: Jinbei and Luffy reflecting that the situation mirrors their meeting in Impel Down, the flashbacks to Luffy's vow…but I was expecting a little more on Momji.
-
Oh my God, turns out Sanji has emotions ! What an unexpected turn of events, that's fantastic ! Seriously ? When this shit finally ends and we'll move to Wano already.
-
So much for ''luffy removes sanji's cuffs like rayleigh did in SA with CoC''.
-

What more were you expecting from her, exactly? Genuinely curious.
-
@Kaido:
What more were you expecting from her, exactly?
More of a flashback? shrug To me, it's not bad or anything. Still touching.
-
In case anyone didn't figured out why Nami had a deja vu, it was that time in Little Garden.
I felt like that had to be said it.
-
When this shit finally ends and we'll move to Wano already.
God,please save One Piece from terrible fans that are willing to rush to whatever sounds cool and will happen in years ahead,by dumping everything that must be shown and adressed in a satisfactory way in the meantime.

In case anyone didn't figured out why Nami had a deja vu, it was that time in Little Garden.
Good call,it's very nice that Oda remembers every minor detail that happened like 15 years before.
On the other hand,if you also count the arsony at the Galley la mansion, that's like the 3rd time that Nami was nearly roasted.
-
Sanji still has the Bento basket with him, I guess that will be Luffy's meal for a start. Too little for Luffy but maybe it can hold him till they return to Sunny Go

Haha, good catches. Totally missed that.
-
I totally forgot Sora. I think it's definitely possible Sanji's mom is the person from the stories. Though, I don't know Japanese or if their names were written differently…
-
Wow another chapter about sanji, another useless flashback another arc with the SHs running around, another case of the BM pirates being useless.
I am so not a fan about how this arc -who looked so promising at the beginning- turned out.
-
Why do people are expecting for a Big Mom's regular pirate to be like a Hunters from Halo?
And forgetting the fact that they succeded in capturing Luffy before?
-
After being mentioned in Fishman Island arc & in this arc multiple arc, it will be disappointing if the tea party is not shown.
I really want to see a whimsical tea party and it turning upside down.Brook & Pedro are still occupied in the treasure room. Chopper & Carrot are still stuck in the mirror world. Luffy is wondering aimlessly. Pekom is still mia. Sanji is only starting to change his mind. There is 2 more sweet commanders. Capone is still unknown. I really don't see them escaping until the tea party start.
-
By the way, why did Jinbe need a bucket to put out the fire?
-
I love how Jinbe just casually rebels and laughs about it.
Oh, and Sanji's mom is best mom
-
By the way, why did Jinbe need a bucket to put out the fire?
I assume because Jinbei can't make water appear out of nowhere so given the plan, he had to to bring some nearby to "control" the dousing of Luffy and Nami
-
Something unnerving about Sanji's mum essentially saying to Reiju, "Sanji is my favourite child, you're okay but I hate the other 3". Ichiji, Nichijii and Yonjii seem to be the real victims here. Robbed of emotion and with a mother who doesn't even love them, poor guys.
I love the panels of Nami eyeing up that guys clothes then stealing them. Low key I always love Nami's outfit changes every arc.
-
Kind of seems rushed how so many plot threads were wrapped up in a short conversation with Reiju. Especially after all the build up for them, the Zeff situation, don't worry about it save yourself they won't pursue him. The handcuffs, oh they are fake, the Vinsmokes being a threat to you, just let us die. I know the pacing is suppose to pick up, however I wish some of these plots would of worked out differently. I guess Luffy will encounter the Vinsmokes, they will all gang up on him. However in his weakened state they will let the strongest take him on and knock him around. Sanji comes across the fight and intervenes and takes all the brothers on and uses his new found knowledge to take them all on. Meanwhile Luffy is eating the food in the bento box, while Judge watches the fight and realizes that emotion is important for a fighter.
-
So many mixed feelings on this chapter. Before those thoughts though: holy fuck Robin looked so hot on the cover page. I absolutely love it:wub::wub::wub:. Now in the chapter: on the one hand I'm happy that even Sanji acknowledged he was being a dumb-ass thinking everything would work out fine. Also liked Reiju basically telling him to go back to the SH's. On the other hand it does seem like everything is getting wrapped up a little too nicely. Shit could still go wrong but narratively I just am not liking the direction Oda is going with WCI.
As for Sanji's mother…sigh...this has been the worst flashback mother Oda has ever done. "Oh judge I'll protect my children from your evil ways". "Oh Sanji you're so great cause you have emotions and feelings". It's fridiging to the worst possible degree. At this point I just want WCI to end and Jinbe to join, because that's the only positive things that will come out of this arc.

@Mr.:

Can't he do that with Fishman Karate though? Back in FI when he hit Wadatsumi with that secret tech he enveloped his fist in water and shot it through him like a cannon. Granted it's probably better to have a bucket rather than punching Nami and Luffy, but it would have been funnier.
-
-
I love how Jinbe just casually rebels and laughs about it.
Oh, and Sanji's mom is best mom
Agree on the Jimbe part, but I say Big Mom is best Mom. Okay, she is crazy but far as characterization, design, and everything else she has it in spades.
For those worrying about the wedding, I am 100% sure we will get that. There has been way too much build-up for Oda to wrap up this arc in a few chapters and just not have that happen. The crew is still separated into many groups, one which is fighting Big Mom at this very moment, which means they won't be getting all together any time soon. Then there's the fact that with everything that has happened they wouldn't be able to just walk off the island like nothing happened.
-
Why so much hate for luffy's tooth?? Remember, the tooth falling out is canon, it ws explicitly and intentionally shown. I dont think its gon a get fixed soon. Plus it looks fine to me.
-
So the other patient on the 4th floor is Cracker? Or did they mean Sanji?
And what does Hidoikotosuruwa mean?
-
Wow another chapter about sanji, another useless flashback
A useless flashback that gives a major character huge characterization and fully reveals the circumstances that led him to who he is today?
another arc with the SHs running around,
Considering that they've been imprisoned for 6 chapters, isn't this actually a change? Why would Oda just show them getting to their destination?
another case of the BM pirates being useless.
Luffy is as strong as a Sweet Commander, and the fact that Big Mom is a Yonko doesn't mean EVERY member of the crew is stronger than every other pirate, especially super strong new world pirates. Plus Luffy is fighting on the run rather than 1v1, which is markedly different from the Enraged Army battle where he was turned into a sitting duck.
-
Can't see why people think Oda is gonna skip the Tea Party/Wedding just because Reiju told Sanji to flee with his crew, he's already hitting us in the face with how intently good natured Sanji is, you honestly think he's gonna leave his sister to die after she just revealed she's been lowkey watching out for him all this time?? Sanji is gonna implore Luffy and Co to at least help him thwart Big Mom's plot to wipe them out….Whether they try to hastely make an escape after this is anyone's guess.
-
And forgetting the fact that they succeded in capturing Luffy before?
I'm wondering what will prevent him from being captured a second time. Let's hope Chopper finds him and helps him finding Sanji
-
@Kaido:
A useless flashback that gives a major character huge characterization and fully reveals the circumstances that led him to who he is today?
Which character are you talking about, exactly? Because the only one I can think of where this fits is Judge, whos' hatred of Sanji is recontextualized.
From the perspective of Sanji, I'm not really sure what this revelation is supposed to add. Him being different than his brothers didn't need any explanation beyond random chance; even evil super-scientists can't expect a 100% succes rate. And even with Momjis sacrifice and Reiju making Sanji seem special by calling him "more kind than anyone"…he really isn't that special? He's literally defined as being 100% ordinary, and sure, he's a nice guy, but he's not exactly mother theresa. Grafting specialness onto Sanjis ordinaryness is weird.
And I'm not sure what Sanji is supposed to gain from this revelation. Its not like he was doubting himself compared to his brothers, and needed to be cheered up by learning that his ordinaryness was a gift from his beloved mother. Of course, being the cause of your mothers death is a good source of drama, but that is shut down by Reiju this very chapter.
I guess the whole thing at least shows that Sanjis empathy and ordinaryness is what makes him special to Reijus eyes, but you don't really need the Dead Mom to get there.
-

What this chapter adds is that what made Sanji a failure is actually what makes him a success. He not being as strong as his brothers was continuously placed upon him as a curse, as something to be ashamed of, but now he finds out being a failure experiment makes him the "true son" his mother was fighting to save. What was his shame now is a source of pride.
Even though Sanji had already cut his ties with his family and refused their view of the world, there is no denying this still weighed in his heart (the burden of not matching his father/family expectations and being a failure not worthy of love). -

Thank you for saying this. I mean yeah it's been nice that having Sanji suffer meant that he was finally taken seriously again but we haven't really learned anything new about him that constitutes "development". Reiju was really overdoing it with all this talk about how he's so great because he inherited his mother's kindness and isn't an asshole like his brothers. Also really have to wonder why in the hell did Momji ever hook up with Judge considering their personalities seem so different.

Wouldn't everything Zeff did for him and all the time spent at Baratie show Sanji that he is worthy of love. For fucks sake a man eat his own goddamn leg just so Sanji could have food to survive. Still got to agree with Daz that this whole you're so ordinary which makes you great is still massively overblown.
-
So the other patient on the 4th floor is Cracker? Or did they mean Sanji?
And what does Hidoikotosuruwa mean?
More or less "I do terrible things"…
BTW good chapter even though I am really afraid that Big Mom will end up getting beaten this arc
-
-
"Fu fu, I do not want your money"…Robin, so talented.
-
Curious to see whom is in the 4th floor. I think the homie told the doctor to be careful because it seems he is sleep walking.
-
I thought people were going to be happy with Sanji gift wrapping that homie up, that was pretty suave. I think he is just ashamed for being naive. I think we'll see the wedding but now the Strawhats will have a plan as well. Plan: Save Reiju~. If Germa goes completely down or she assumes the leadership, which will it be.
-
Well, there goes "what about the prisoners in the library", knocked out by almost burning to death. Unless we see Mont get knocked down, they could easily stash them there again. Jimbe and Nami seem to be going for hiding, which I like, there are no kids around so Nami does not care but for herself.
-
Such a refreshing interaction between Jimbe, Nami and Luffy. Putting the big picture together. The newspaper did say that Jimbe tried to cut ties but he went back on his word. Big Mom asks him to play the roulette he says he'd rather not then, Mama gets angry at him kicks him out of the castle for being gutless. That's why Opera said: "You are not supposed to be in the castle right now" instead of taking a fighting stance against an intruder. I hope we get to see it.
-
I wonder how much more fatigue does Luffy feel now in comparison as when he was in the book and under the prison's influence. Luffy letting them know that he said he was tired, he did not ask for food was priceless.
@Kaido:
Plus Luffy is fighting on the run rather than 1v1, which is markedly different from the Enraged Army battle where he was turned into a sitting duck.
He was also stubbornly standing his ground. I love it, "you! the one that punched me" *chokes him, jokes.
