Chapter 834: My Dream

Rehashed info with Sanji about the cuffs, repeat the useless pages with Big mom knowing the whereabouts of the Sh's and bounty poster flashing; we knew this chapters ago [but didn't even reveal how yet], A useless spread of bege's family [a small panel would have sufficed], a meaningless show of pekoms getting shot [we know he ain't dead], Ceasar Crown RETELLING the story about his failure in too many words; waste of panels which could have been used to advance the story. Panels Oda could have used to progress the forest escapade.
At this point I really think you are trolling. But just in case please see video below. @KageKageKing:
Not bad! But more like this!

Pretty accurate, I must say. However, its more like this!

As someone officially diagnosed for ADD myself, I'd like to recommend you make an appointment to see your physician and get a tip on local doctors and psychiatrists who could examine you. It would take maybe two or so sessions, but pretty quickly they could get you on medications that might help you live a fuller and more focused life. Fears of Adderall are not unfounded, but many drugs have since been created and processed that can offer similar effects without the drawbacks. So there's hope for you, and I'll be the first to welcome you back to the chapter threads once you no longer have the attention span of a pigeon.
-
Good chapter, updating us on the locations and situations of pretty much everyone on Zou. While also giving a reasonable dilemma to keep Sanji where he is now.
Glad to see that Cesar finally had his debts/swindling of Big Mam explained and turned into a plot point; we've got Sanji's wedding, Cesar being held hostage, and the search for Big Mam's poneglyph.
Though I am curious about how exactly the "Lick - Lick Fruit" is gonna work; I mean is it going to be as straightforward as turning someone into candy? Or is there gonna be a secondary component to it, like if he turns a really strong person into candy, and then eats said candy, will he be able to absorb some of that person's power (like Majin Buu's "candy beam"). Just speculating, because he is Big Mam's eldest son; so maybe being the oldest in his family puts him a but further up on the totem pole.
For the end of the chapter I'm both interested and entertained about what's going on while at the same time skeptical. What I don't want is for Charlotte's fruit to just be a more powerful version of Bon Clay's fruit because that would feel cheap. But I do find everything thats happened so far to be interesting and kinda funny. Especially with the last page.
So many exploitable pics:
[hide]
[/hide]Still not entirely sure whats going on, but hopefully it'll be more complex than Bon Clay 2.0
-
yeah,MS's translation seems even more localised
Localising a translation is what you're SUPPOSED to do. It's making the dialogue more natural and flow better than a literal translation.
and memish this time, though i haven't read the other trans and neither do i want to.
Waxing poetic is not a meme; it's an actual English expression.

I think its power to turn animals into copies of people.
-
I think its power to turn animals into copies of people.
Huh?? Why would you say that it was specifically animals. It can probably turn anything into copies of people. But for common living things that will move, dogs, cats and mice are the obvious fodder.
-
Huge chapter. Super important.
So much to say and so little time.
I flipped multiple times but I'm most stoked that my suspicion regarding '4Kids Sanji' has all but been confirmed.
-
The fact Oda is still keeping the forest as a threat is something I greatly appreciate. I also appreaciate the fact that even after some explanations, it's still mysterious as heck, and giving us plenty of great pannels, one of them this chapter's ending, which is hilarious and creative. And the giant stuck on the floor is awesome. Now of course Oda could make them solve the mystery in one chapter next week, but I hope he gets to play a bit more with it, since he seems to be having fun so far.
It’s funny because I have a hard time finding the forrest threatful. So the guy saying their chance of escaping is nul looks typically like the usual underestimating.
Of course this page showed that Luffy stupidity can rise very high level but he is not alone. -

Going to write about this in your column? I can see several scenarios right now, especially with the whole Capone-Pekomz thing, so would like to see your take on it.

Haven't spotted the confirmation myself, though I do agree that the Sanji in the last chapter is a nod to the 4Kids incarnation. Though I do wonder if Oda ever sat down and watched any of those episodes when they were the only official localization out there. I would assume he only known of Lollipop Sanji due to his infamy next to Helmeppo's Go-Go-Gadget Pistol
-

no,localising is what you are supposed to do if you are 4kids
i agree that some localisation has to be done, but not to the extent of completely changing the source material and replacing dialogue with whatever you feel like adding.
okay, waxing poetic is not a meme.so what?it's an "English expression" that personally i've only seen in rap songs, but feel free to illustrate it's usage in literature or other media where it's used as actual dialogue.
And more importantly,it doesn't matter.i'm 99% sure that's not what bege actually says, and unless his dialogue is some over-complicated expression that can't be translated accurately and literally i see no pint in replacing it unless you want to make some derivative of one piece with weird, humourous dialogue that would be suited for only whoever is interested in or understands those jokes.
but,i guess in the end you are entitled to your opinion,so feel free to Mangastream OP and Chill,i guess?(did i use that right?)On a more general note, one thing i see people seem to suggest is that the end goal of translating and localising is to ensure that the foreign product(foreign literature/comics/shows/movies) is unidentifiable as foreign.i think, for example almost all people who read manga or watch anime know it is japanese, and it is inevitable it contains some cultural differences to comics and shows.it is common sense, and there is no need to completely localise everything to hide that fact.just my opinion.
take the design of Marine HQ as example.it's design is foreign in nature, with foreign language emblazoned across it.what are you going to do with that?or japanese holidays?turn them into thanksgiving or christmas?
that is why localisation should be used sensibly -
I think it's an interesting logic vs emotion debate about the state of the manga right now. Logically some interesting things have happened and been said since Dressrosa, but emotionally the relief of seeing true danger happen and the strength of the Strawhats to overcome it– that's what's missing. Anyone who says there's been plenty to love since Dressrosa is right, but it's that one missing element that's causing unrest. By later this year, I assume, everyone will have had a full-course meal of what they're looking for.
-
I liked Dressrosa, and 99.9% of One Piece. I was fortunate enough to read it while the story was on Impel Down, but since then I rarely complain about a chapter. One of my few…not complaints, but desires is to see Luffy and Zoro tag team someone. They are not even my favourite amongst the Starwhats, although I like them all, but I think it could be very well set up and be an important fight.
I was laughing really hard looking at the last page, I almost saw, Luffy stupidity be able to break the illusion of the forest by trapping everything in it.
When I first joined the forum, I posted on theory thread about Capone working for the Vinsmock against Big Mom, it seems I'm still super crazy, but not completely off the mark. Unless the translations are way off. I admit my reasons, a flying rock as a means of transportation were far fetched, but eh, you got to start somewhere jajajalulu.

Super dense packed chapter, so much is going on, so many small new information!
But one thing is really bothering me… don't you think the whole connection between Ceasar and Big Mom seems a bit far-fetched? I mean, back then in Punk Hazard we already got the explanation for Ceasar's giantification research. I think it was Smoker who was the one who said the world government is doing that research to produce giant marine soldiers to increase the power of their army... and now, out of nothing, Big Mom was paying Ceasar for exactly the same thing?! This just feels... wrong.
And I mean, wouldn't it be just plain easier for all everyone if Big Mom wanted Ceasar to develop something to make her smaller instead of MAKING EVERYONE ELSE BIGGER? :D Ok, she is a Yonko, ok she is crazy, ok it might stress her power that she is capable of funding such research and so on.
And one fun fact: The last time a character in One Piece mentioned "his dream", he joined the crew. You remember? Back then, in the good old times, when the particular dreams of the crew members used to be sort of important? Big Mama for nakama! (I am NOT serious)

Their face expressions made me think those copies showing some very simplistic anger etc- simply reminded me of animals turned into people. If thats not proper answer then I didnt understand your question.

I missed at first, but capone gave pekoms a way out, just before he said that underestimating BM will be his downfall.
So capone does plan to ttake down BM? And wanted pekoms to join him…
Let's see, Bonney that could he one of daughter shows up and uses her power to nulify Bm's df that steal years, capone will trap BM in his body, then luffy will turn into giant with Ceasar's help( time limited boost). Sounds fun.

I think when he says "a way out" he is referring to being left for dead on Zou.
-

Same. He could have stayed there and survived but his persistency costed him his life.
Poor Pekoms. If only there were some unnacounted fishmen in the area.
It is a pretty weird location to get rid of Pekoms. If he is doing it as a part of conspiracy against BM, he could have taken him out anywhere but on Whole Cake.

The chances aren't half bad, I'd say.
And it's probably so that the sharks leave no trace of him, anywhere else, a corpse might be found eventually.

Chances that he's dead? Zilch.
I don't know, that sea of ants could have disposed of Pekoms equally good if not better. I'm just hoping Cake was chosen for something more than "plot reasons".

sorry miss post zzzz

Slightly late but the Grand Line Review for this chapter is out
-
@Monkey:
It was literally one goddamn page.
I was ready for things to advance within the forest after the entire chapter on it but yeah it was just a page and I know we'll start getting developments in the forest the next time we see it. I just wanted to point out that this wasn't necessarily a case of everyone forgetting to take their Adderall and giving in to their inner brain dead action junkie side.
-
What's in the place of Luffy for being captured then? Jinbe a coward, i knew this since the beggining, every pal of Ace it is one.
-

I can't tell if you're being serious or not…

Nice chapter. But I'm kinda fed up with Oda over used the "jaw drop" moments in so many chapters already (its all started with overdose of Barto's jawdrops).
-
Ceasar Crown RETELLING the story about his failure in too many words; waste of panels which could have been used to advance the story. Panels Oda could have used to progress the forest escapade.
Whaaaat?
Caesar spending all the funds on booze and hookers is a hilarious revelation!
For some reason I didn't expect that.

Still sounds exactly like that.

What an interesting development where Pekoms gets shot (again) and happens to fall into a sea packed with whale sharks. What did Jinbe do at Impel Down? Control whale sharks… Not really difficult to see how Pekoms is getting out of this and again he'll be saved by a (future) strawhat so he'll be in their debt for sure, even more then now.
-
Speaking of action and fighting, I actually don't expect there to be much fights that'll push the Strawhats to their limits power-wise this arc. Whereas for example Sanji of course will get another fight, I expect it to have mental hurdles instead of power ones.
The next time when there will be heavy fights that will push the Strawhats to their actual power limits will be when the first Yonkou goes down which will be Kaido in Wano. And no, I totally cannot see Big Mom going down here with only half the Strawhats.

Then how will luffy manage to get Sanji and Jimbei? They can't leave unless luffy does something.
And no, escaping is not in the options since the reason sanji even got here is because he would get some nice heads in boxes. Likely the same can be for jimbei and his friends.

Your over all point is correct but just going to jump in and say those aren't whale sharks. Whale sharks have the flatter snouts and wouldn't threaten to eat Pekoms at all. These are probably a type of dog fish or sand shark, shark breeds that are also known to have spots. Those will bite up and eat meat like Pekoms.
.
Though I wonder if Oda drew them with patterns that closely resemble Whale Sharks to play with our expectations? Maybe Jinbe roles in with the other Sun Pirates to control and befriend them but these Sharks don't play nice right away?

you make a good point. I thought they looked a bit similar only slightly more sinister. Can jinbe befriend only whalesharks though? Was he abwhale shark fishman? If so that might make some sense but maybe he can befriend more typea of sharks.

People complaining about the Capone/Pekoms scene: the scene was not about tricking us into thinking Pekoms is dead, it was to show Capone is just pretending to serve BM and that Pekoms (one of her men) is now aware of it.
@RomanceDawn:stuff
You'll be glad to know the paragraph (and the edit) bug is fixed.

I thought that Jinbei could only communicate with whale sharks since he's a whale shark fishman, like how Weak-hoshi can talk to Sea Kings because she's Poseidon. Maybe Jinbei learned how to communicate with other types of sharks during the 2 years.
-
I really dig how we see what's holding Sanji back is what Zeff instilled in him as a child more than anything else. I find his passion for cooking to be the most interesting aspect of his personality, so i'm enjoying all the emphasis getting placed on it.
I'm concerned about Jinbe. What was the price he had to pay in exchange for his freedom? I hope we get a flashback of what went down with the roulette wheel, can't imagine that'll be glossed over. Plus the way this chapter teases Jinbe becoming a Straw Hat is just cruel.
The way Baron Tamago casually discovers Straw Hat crew and friends with reactions from Brook and Pedro were priceless.
It was neat to see Bege as a family man, the back and forth between Pekoms being executed and Bege's son crying was a visually striking choice for a death scene.
Big Mom's dream suits her character, although I will say it appears more benign than I thought it would. I really love the dichotomy of how accomidating Big Mom is to Caesar because she has faith he won't fail her, while Caesar freaks out over being told to do the impossible and the consequence of his inevitable failure.
Perospero's character design looks awesome.
Count me among those who are enjoying the Seducing Woods. I wouldn't be opposed to Luffy and the ground giant being friends. Could make for an amusing temporary duo.

For some reason I didn't expect that.
To be fair, there was no indication for it whatsoever. He was the crazy, egoistical scientist with a jealousy problem and the goal to be the best and most famous scientist.

Well of course. No doubt he learned that the good ole Smack-on-the-Snout is a universally understood language. Shark Esperanto.

Agreed. Now let's look it in a different light. Say on some level, Pekoms is still loyal to Big Mom and intended to rat out on Luffy & crew sooner or later, or at least help them avoid direct confrontation with BM (so that everyone comes out unscathed). Pekoms' removal might instill the notion that Capone is intent on using the Straw Hats. He involves them by capturing Sanji, puts them in a corner by eliminating potential allies, then waits for the inevitable chaos to further his own agenda. And if worse comes to worst and BM emerges victorious, he'll still have opened a spot for promotion.
It's far-fetched as a theory, but really I think Capone is the kind of guy who would come up with such plans.
-
Maybe Capone is an ally with Crocodile who will come to Sanjis wedding..
-

I do expect important names at tea party like Buggy and Croco boy, maybe Buggy heard rumors that warlord system will go down, and needs to make new contacts, like BM. I don't think Corocodile Works with Capone, but then again, they both seem like mobsters…
-

I agree. It seemed out of character. As if Oda couldn't come up with something, say, nerdier.

I don't know, a scientist who was once on the governments dime now using a ton of his privately backed funds for booze and hookers? We weren't given any hints that's what he did with the money but it seems totally in character to me. It's like the real life scandals you hear about all the time lol. Caesar seems just arrogant and self centered enough to blow a large portion of that money on himself.
-
Yes, it is very in-character and very amazing.
Whats the hubbub about waxing poetic? Its probably a perfectly fine translation. And the "over here" part is just stereotypical dumb gangster talk. Quit trippin
