Chapter 797: Rebecca

Awww Rebecca's all grown up now isn't she
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Smoker vs Vergo, that's what I could call brilliant. Awesome exchange, not a single wasted movement.
I definitely agree with this. Plus some moments with Law were noteable.
-
It took me more of an entire day to get over an arc with overly hyped villains which did not live up to the glory, terribly written fights; which were interrupted, off-paneled and unappealing. Cliche conflicts…...Law's revenge, a kingdom being subdued by villain, oh, lol Rebecca, Bwahahwhahwhha I DONTZ CAREZ IF YOUZ KILLEDZ, DAT WAS DA PAST, U R STILLZ MY FATHERZ CUM BACKD TO ME...BWAHAWAWA [cue the overly forced Oda crybaby face]. How about having an admiral here just for eye candy? His talk of righteousness yet he stands here and laughs, but wait we clean it up with gambling right? The dice decides who stops the evil? How did you forget how lame doflamingos fight was with Luffy, champion and sabo OFF-PANELED while luffy was being saved by citizens? How disappointing was the executives, being under a shichibukai you are supposed to be worth something? Zoro took a break from shounen jump. Oda is not serious, his arcs are becoming more and more melodramatic, he is forcing you to sniffle. His arcs recently have been terribly written.
You know, I can't actually disagree with that. I would say Oda has lost his touch, but there were a few good moments in Dressrosa. So hopefully things pick off again.
-
to me dressrosa was a solid 7..probably a 7,5..in a scale where alabasta and enies lobby are a ten and fishman island is a 5..hado some great stuff in it..but also something that really didn't work as intended, and it suffers from the fact that now oda seems to avoid fights wth all his effort, while before the strange battles between devil fruit users were the highlights of the arcs..i understand that he has grown up with time and also that the more the story goes on,the less cool ablities are left that can also offer variety in combat.
the one thing i can't forgive to dressrosa is how it treated usopp as a character..it made him make several step backwards in terms of chearacter development..hell he showed some behaviors that he stopped doing back in the arlong saga ò_ò
that took off a solid point from the arc score for me. -

He will always be a coward, but he actually progressed so much in this arc, heck him unlocking Observation Haki to snipe Sugar from so far away was epic. F'king Doflamingo put him in the highest bounty! Ussop was really a GOD in this arc.

he can still be a coward, but also vowed that he would have always done his part during the adventures,or otherwise he would have not be able to smile with the crew.
instead in this arc there is at least one instance where he says that he is gonna go back to the crew lying about the fact that he done his part..basically what he lerned not to do back when he fought pciùalso, the set up was perfect for him to shine, since he was against an opponent who was stronger but also immensely stupid..and for him who is the master of deceit and lies it was the perfect opportunity to do something while still being the weakest member and still having fear.
this coming from someone who still thinks that usopp vs perona is the best one on one fight in the entire one piece manga.
-
Usopp got scared in the ONE chapter where he had amnesia where he no longer remembered Robin and several of the Tontotta existed and he was completely outnumbered. And then he *still got over it to go face his enemies… and got utterly destroyed for his efforts.
But still managed to succeed, albeit in a strange way. ANd then a few chapters later got the super awesome sniping with haki achievement that everyone loved, which Oda obviously had in mind from the start. He really, really didn't backpeddle, he just got justifiably scared at having been apparently abandoned... sudden giant gap in your memories of your friends and partners will do that.
I don't understand why people keep acting as if he was a complete and total traitorous coward for six months or a year and massively backpeddled... he got scared. For ONE chapter.
and it suffers from the fact that now oda seems to avoid fights wth all his effort, while before the strange battles between devil fruit users were the highlights of the arcs.
He doesn't avoid fights. Everyone important still got a full blown fight this arc… plus we had all the Colosseum stuff. He just makes the overall battles shorter, or offscreens the tertiary characters, otherwise things would pad out even more... like in Bleach. For everyone complaining this took too long, imagine if each of the lieutenants took 3 or 4 chapters each to fight... we'd still be on Sai vs. Lao G. and Luffy wouldn't have even started fighting Doflamingo yet.

he only forgotten about robin..and he was still planning to lie to the other strawhats about actually doing something…that's a behavior he vowed to never have again back in arlong park..one chapter is one chapter too much...especially since he had to hear the tontatta being squashed to actually do something.

there is a big difference between the full one on one fights we were used to have and the couple of attacks and then conclusionwe have nowadays
also..as long as the fights are intertaining..i wouldn't have mind longer ones..especially since there are many parts that can still be cut while maintaining the narrative cohesiveness, like all the panels where people run around. -
So anyway, guys. I was surfing Ishuhui, and I found some very interesting stuff that I want to do myself the pleasure of sharing with you, guys.
The first one is about a parallel between Barto and the painting of 'Liberty Leading the People'.
The second one is about the parallel between Cavendish and Napoleon on one of the five versions of canvases named 'Napoleon Crossing the Alps'.
Another one is about the parallel between the dining of the Don Quixote family and the depiction of the 'Last Supper'(the last meal that Jesus shared with his apostles in Jerusalem before crucifixion, according to the Gospel accounts).

Sorry but there wasn’t any sign from Oda that it is the memory loss that affected Usopp. You are a bit making things up.
Usopp has always behave the same since his introduction. He acts like a coward and in crucial moments he makes heroic things. There is no improvement needed in his character and it will probably be like that until the end.And the fact that interesting fights were avoided becuse Oda made an overcomplicated arc is not something he should be credit for…
-
Thats because we used to have only 4 or 5 characters getting fights, lus th ebig Luffy battle against someone. Now we have an average of 8-12 main fights an arc. Enies Lobby slowed to a complete crawl to give everyone battles, so of course Oda is going to avoid that if he can.
Hell, a huge chunk of this arc was colloseum stuff, nothing but fighting. ANd a big chase up a mountain that was also nothing but fighting. You complain that "there's a lot of running", but there's a lot of fighting during that running. Not epic 3 chapter long one on one showdowns, not for everyone, but plenty.
Didn't people complain about the Franky/Pink fight going on too long?
Also, if the anime were at all competant, they could fill in the gaps there but they don't.
Sorry but there wasn’t any sign from Oda that it is the memory loss that affected Usopp. You are a bit making things up.
Usopp has always behave the same since his introduction. He acts like a coward and in crucial moments he makes heroic things. There is no improvement needed in his character and it will probably be like that until the end.Usopp didn't say "Oh hey, I forgot Robin existed!" because… he didn't know that. But in context, its pretty clear that must have seemed the case to him that he was thrown into an impossible fight by himself with no back up. And it happened suddenly, too!
And the fact that interesting fights were avoided becuse Oda made an overcomplicated arc is not something he should be credit for…
Story is about more than just fights.
And its still loaded with battles and fighting. Just not as many drawn out 1 on 1 scenarios. If we went back and actually counted I'm sure we'd total up to dozens of fights in this arc overall.
-
Usopp's courage shines only when his dear friends are in trouble.
You guys talk about character regression, but Usopp never helped on his own complete strangers. Not at the cost of his own life.
Oh wait! They aren't strangers, they kidnapped him in the forest and tried to take all his belongings. They are really good friends indeedOf course, I'm not saying that I was glad to see Usopp run away. But he has so many glorious moments in this arc. He deserves a break.
-
Usopp:
"What are you looking at? I'm going up against Captain Kuro's pirates!
Of course I'm scared!! So what!? I don't want your pity! You guys can stop laughing! Leave!"Zoro:
"We're not laughing at you. We're impressed. That's why we're going to help you."Luffy:
"Who'd risk their life out of pity!?" -
It's true fighrs have become shorter and more reliant on attacks that end the fight at once (not one shots, since fights like Kyros vs Diamante or Hajrudin vs Machvise weren't one shots and both opponents ended up almost equally injured in both cases, but one single attack seemed to do 100% of the damage), and I too long for the great coreographies that Oda still has in him to do in short doses (Smoker vs Vergo, Law vs Doffy)…
... But I'm surprisingly satisfied with what we got, specially during the executive fights. Some got the short end of the stick, some gave us pretty respectable fights (Gladius, Pica, Diamante, Lao G). So, yeah, not saying this is what I definitely want from now on, but I enjoyed it.
-
Didn't people complain about the Franky/Pink fight going on too long?
One can only see so many supplexes before they become boring. Pink's ability had a lot more potential.
But it would have been tough to show it all in an arc like this one. If only people behind the anime were competent enough to make something moderately decent.

I take that the first time the strange request Viola was asked came from Rebecca's mom before her death.
I have to say, that because they don't know the small history that Rebecca and Luffy have together that it isn't surprising that some Dressrosa citizens are upset over Rebecca being "kidnapped" by Luffy. -
It's nice to see a good character analysis of Rebecca. People take for granted the extent of the childhood she had to endure. I also find it contradictory how people never get upset or mention how often her father kyros cries. She may just be an emotional person, a trait inherited from kyros.
Apart from that though, I like how you mentioned that her way to excise negative emotions was through tears. I'm sure many can understand the feeling of wanting to hit someone but having to restrain yourself. Emotions need a release and crying is a natural one, unfortunately it's also looked down upon in American society in my opinion.
Thanks. :happy:That way of releasing negative emotions is not rebuked in American society only. I think it’s rebuked worldwide.
@Jabberwok:For the briefest moment I had this silly hope you were about to go all Fresh Prince on us.
I am sorry but I don’t understand what you mean by ‘Fresh Prince’. It would be cool if you could help me understand what you were trying to say. :)
I thought the emotional core of this chapter could have used a little more time, like one more page near the end. It's the lack of finality there that makes me think we'll see them one or two more times before fully leaving Dressrosa.
I do agree with you that they might be seen one or two times before completely leaving Dressrosa, but I personally have no problem with that. This is just my personal opinion :)
Regarding Rebecca, a lot of people dislike her because she cries way too much and is forcibly sidelined by virtually every character she meets. That being said, I think she could be surprisingly improved by just holding it together for a few more panels each time. It feels like she starts crying a bit too early in several emotional points in a way that usually precedes the reader's feelings and sometimes even causes detatchment.
Take this page :
If Rebecca starts crying at the middle of the page and only has tears welling at the top/previous, I personally would feel more of her anger and desperation with her bone headed father. Holding off on weeping for a little longer would give more credence to her other non-waterfall emotions, namely the anger and frustration she feels so frequently throughout Dressrosa, and would present us, I believe, with a more rounded and likeable character.
When Kyros opened the door of his house and found Rebecca obstructing his leave, tears were already in her eyes. And in that same page she started crying. So it should be expected to see the continuation of her crying in the next page(the one you showed me).
Rebecca is an orphan who lived ten years of her life alone, marginalized, disdained and scorned. The Toy Soldier(Kyros) was the only one she has grown fully attached to, and the only one who holds the place of a ‘parent’ in her eyes. The very thought of having herself separated from him permanently, after finally been given the opportunity to realize her most precious wish and dream of living with him, tears her heart apart, especially when she has recently discovered that this very Toy Soldier, who has gone to great lengths to protect her during the past ten years, is in fact her father. So it is understandable and compliant with reality that she would cry when faced with the disintegration of that dream.
For such reasons, I cannot bring myself to complain about her crying in these circumstances. This is what I think.
-
I don't understand why people keep acting as if he was a complete and total traitorous coward for six months or a year and massively backpeddled… he got scared. For ONE chapter
Because it was one of those bandwagon type things, he was fun to hate at that time so people hopped on board.
-
So anyway, guys. I was surfing Ishuhui, and I found some very interesting stuff that I want to do myself the pleasure of sharing with you, guys.
Oh, that's interesting !
I've only noticed the parallel between "La Liberté Guidant le Peuple" and Bartolomeo but not the other ones.
Thanks for sharing.|
Now about Rebecca.
I do agree with you with all this emotional traumatizes she had to go through. That could be taken in consideration in real life or mangas like Hunter x Hunter where psychology is more developped, but not in One Piece in my opinion.
The fact that the other characters don't seem to have these sorts of issues, even after knowing way worse, is what, I think, makes Rebecca so annoying and hated by lots of people, including me. -
Nami was a useless ball of tears during the Arlong arc. Overwhelming emotion or past history mesing with someone are nothing new in the series. Its not even strictly just a female thing, Ace was full of angst and crying during marineford… and even Luffy was a blubbering mess after reuniting with Sabo.
And Franky cries at the drop of a hat on a regular basis.

And remember that time Nami begged Luffy to save them for their ordeal on Sabondy?

Nami cried when she needed help and was brave all along her journey.
Ace cried when he died or his friends died.
Luffy cried for a moment.
Franky cries in a manly way, when he hears sad stories for example >> it's a gag.None of them freaking cried for an entire arc !!

Well that's a clear signal you're not from the US or have been living under a rock.
It was just a passing reference to the
which has a similar line about his life got flipped turned upside-down.When Kyros opened the door of his house and found Rebecca obstructing his leave, tears were already in her eyes. And in that same page she started crying. So it should be expected to see the continuation of her crying in the next page(the one you showed me).

I don't have a problem with her crying- it's kind of her best skill. I'm saying that if she could hold back the waterworks for a little bit each time it would give her portrayal a slightly more positive spin. She should absolutely be tearing up the moment the door opens because it's highly emotional for her; I just think holding off on the full geyser for a few panels would help keep the focus on her other feelings.
Crying in One Piece is pretty frequent and that's fine. The only difference is that most of the those characters aren't crying all the time and that makes the moments they do have more impact. For those who do cry more frequently, like Franky, it's often played for laughs. Most characters work to present a tough face and stew in their own emotions until they finally break forth; Rebecca, despite fighting in a colosseum in front of a hostile crowd, seems to go around leaking everywhere. Maybe that's healthier but it sure makes for a less dramatic read.
By the way, loved the art stuff. Napoleon is definitely intentional and I wouldn't be surprised if the others were too given the Gaudi-influenced architecture and art references from Jora's fruit. More art is always appreciated.
-
Getting to re read the chapter with a better translation helps me focus on stuff I missed before lol. I wonder if the knocked down, but knocked out soliders was the dwarves. Or Leo specifically. One of the soilders landed in a way that made me think he was bound.
Rebecca crying is not surprising. That's like the most common reaction to happen in this series. People cry a crap ton. I'm like 85% sure someone is shown crying at minimum every 5 chapters. When I first started marathoning this series I thought about playing the drinking crying game (no not that crying game) but I'd be dead drunk. Everyone gets super emotional in this series. I think One Piece was also the first time I saw a lot of snot associated with crying in a comic/cartoon.

This forum has truly became a shithole huh, how sad.

Remove Diamante from the list and we have the only 3 decent fights in the arc along with Law vs Flamingo.
Diamante was the biggest disappointment this arc. Had so much hopes for him. But all he does is laugh at all the advantages he has over Kyros, freak out at the Nakama power, and then get knocked out cold. What a champion of the coliseum. More like the toilet cleaner. His trump card was so lame as well. Iron pieces falling from the sky. Sooo scary. Gladius was wayy more impressive and he wasn't a seat.
And Trebol a shit. The rest of the fights were also a shit.
Luffy vs Flamingo wasn't bad it just didn't live up to the hype. It didn't have as much quick paced frenetic give and take that Luffy vs Lucci had. It was Doffy beating the shit out of Luffy for a chapter, then Luffy beating the shit out of Doffy for a chapter, than back to Doffy beating the shit out of Luffy, and then getting oneshotted after Luffy activated G4 again.
But Doffy's style and powers are best of any character so far. Oda has shown snippets of brilliance so the magic isn't lost, but too few and far between. This fight had potential to be GOAT. Ended up merely average. And because of its potential the disappointment is exponentially greater.

This arc was a blurry mess. It started off simple (Destroy the Factory) but Oda just kept adding sub-plots and new character arcs until the plot was entirely lost.
Destroy the factory
Oh, and fight in a tournament
Oh, and there are dwarves
and the marines are here
and there's someone called Bart
and Bellamy's back
and here's a warrior princess
and here's a weird living toy
and the dwarves want to rescue their princess
and the girl Sanji met is also a princess
People run around
People run around
Here's an extended flashback of Doflamingo taking over the country
Now we've got to turn all the toys back to human
Here's an extended flashback of Rebecca's childhood
Rebecca crying!
Strawhats get bounties
People run around
People run around
Here's an extended flashback of Rebecca's childhood from a different perspective
Here's an extended flashback of Law's childhood
Time for fights!
Fights fights fights!
Interruptions to fights!
Cutting between different fights!
Rebecca crying!
Gear 4!
Birdcage destroys stuff
People try to stop birdcage
People run around
Birdcage destroys stuff
People try to stop birdcage
Rebecca crying!
Interruption to fights!
Rebecca crying! It could be great if it was cut in half, but as it is it's just a blurry mess. The birdcage is the single worse plot device in the history of One Piece. Somehow, without any concentration, Doflamingo can summon a cage strong enough to destroy an entire island that can't be cut or stopped even by the combined force of an admiral, Zoro, Franky, all the Gladiators and the entire population of Dressrosa. Absolute bullshit.
And Rebecca is easily the worst character created by Oda. Back in the good days, Oda didn't put so much focus on secondary characters. Sure, we had Dalton, Wiper; Paulie and so on. But these characters never took so much screentime, the spotlight has always been the crew. Not only the Riku family were secondary characters, but they were also bland, annoying and boring. Only the toy soldier actually felt like a One Piece character. On top of that these people weren't related to the crew at all (unlike Vivi), Rebecca didn't interact with the crew beside Luffy.
-
Just wondering, have we ever seen Jean Ango again after his defeat at Colosseum?
Is he still stuck in the wall there or something? -
Martine, you do realize that all arcs until now start with one main plot and then divide into others, right ?
That's just how One Piece (and shonens in general, really, except for a few exceptions) is (/are).
-
I actually enjoyed the Dressrosa arc. Oda's managed to introduce a bunch of future allies, while Luffy takes on one of the major players of the new world.
-
I'll give it another 5-6 chapters before we leave this Island.
Was this post seriously needed? Stop being immature.

Was this post seriously needed? Stop being immature.
Okay, I apologize for giving a response that I thought needed to be made. Its not like I was trying to offend one's culture or religion. Its not like I have to give an answer with a hundred words of text instead of quoting a phrase from a movie everyone knows. I totally disrespected the rules did I? I recon I am totally guilty. Crucify me.
-
I love that clip.
Upon rereading this chapter, I love King Riku violently shaking the guy who brought him the news of Rebecca being kidnapped, and then later he's simply laughing with Viola. It's nice to see him not stressed.

You mistook King Riku with Kyros.

Whoops, thanks for pointing that out.
Luckily it was a typing mistake, I didn't actually think that was Kyros.

I actually enjoyed the Dressrosa arc. Oda's managed to introduce a bunch of future allies, while Luffy takes on one of the major players of the new world.
It has a lot of ingredients to make it memorable:
Best villain in One Piece. He was pure evil, his design is so damn epic.
An arc that revealed a lot about Law and featured him heavily, he's easily one of the most likeable characters that isn't a Strawhat.
Law's Shanks who goes by the name Corazon is, surprise surprise, one of the most likeable flashback characters and his story was a warm and heartfelt one.
An arc where we actually see a flashback of the main villain and what made him what he is today, we never get that (at least not as extensive)
Some really badass side characters in Bartolomeo and Cavendish who sprinkled their comic relief all over the place.
We got to see Red Hawk again.
Saw some new techniques from Luffy, even in his base form, like those spin kicks he did.
Gear Fourth.
God Ussop and his observation haki slowly developing.
Hakuba.
Sabo.
Sabo using Dragon techniques.
Sabo being a pain in the ass to Koala (huehue)
Koala who we saw in Fishman Island flashback is all grown up cute looking.
Viola and Sanji moments.
Sabo eating Ace's fruit and then using Dragon techniques imbued with fire (jizz)
Jesus Burgess jumping down the mountain, no fucks given.
Hearing Blackbeard talking to him over the Den Den Zehahaha!
Bellamy's face etched with Luffy's fist again.
Zoro's swords making jet plane sound effects when Orlumbus threw him towards Pica.
Zoro having to think tactically for once in a fight instead of relying on his godlike endurance and brute force.
Kaido reveal.
More recently, Luffy soaring through the air with Crybaby Becca in tow, like a superhero. So many highlights and I've only touched the surface. One of the best One Piece arcs to date and we haven't even officially finished yet, I think after the next three chapters it will cement itself as one of the greats.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
What held this arc back from being the greatest?
Length
Rebecca
Riku
Tontattas
Birdcage
Too much running
Too much re-running
Kanjuro (seriously could not give two shits about this character, provided a laugh with his abilities but his design is meh)
Doflamingo seemingly being nerfed when he seemed way more intelligent prior to his defeat.
Mansherry's abilities, took out all the tension in future fights (oh Law's lost a arm, no big deal we know who's going to sprinkle her fairy dust when all is said and done). -
Kanjuro wasn't a problem in this arc. Even if you don't like him, he's enough of a background character that you can't say he actively hurt this arc. Even if you combine all the pages featuring any sort of focus on him you probably wouldn't have a full chapter.
I would add an excessive number of speeches and the mindless sheeple of Dressrosa to your list of faults. If ever there was an instance to use that normally idiotic term, it's to describe Dressrosa's citizens.
-
Do you like Riku? (if you do I need to put you in my no no list)
Not particularly. I don't especially dislike him either, though I do wish some things regarding him were handled differently.
Mainly I enjoyed seeing someone who's been through a lot relaxed a bit.
-

Doflamingo seemingly being nerfed when he seemed way more intelligent prior to his defeat.
The best villain is Crocodile, gets army, goes for a kingdom which holds info about the greatest weapon in history and having fun while it to strike the world… not just some galant nonchalant spoiled boy keeping his family land's for x reason making business with everyone and having the cover desire to be pirate king.
Yep, he was nerfed. Put me Luffy Vs Dofla without damage and Dofla wins undoubtedly, he's indeed the skilled person seen in One Piece.

I don't even like Rebecca and I'm getting sick of hearing about the hate towards her.
As for the villians… Doflamingo performed really awesomely but the entire rest of his crew dissapointed me severely in the end. Especially Pica, Treble and Daimante. They are the highest officers in his crew and got hyped up alot..and for what? They all fell way too easily imo. I mean, I've grown newfound appreciation for the fact Pica made Zoro think and it DOES help Hype up the fact Zoro is still going to have some surprises since he's stronger than Pica even...but at the same time I guess I was hoping for Dressrosa to be the next Enis Lobby and it ultimately wasn't.

Reminds me of that time when Obama fought Doflamango and Kadio when Luffy was badly damaged during his gear 4 run.
He did?

He did?

Story is about more than just fights.
That is not the point. Still fights are at the core of a serie like One Piece since it is how problems are resolved.
And its still loaded with battles and fighting. Just not as many drawn out 1 on 1 scenarios. If we went back and actually counted I'm sure we'd total up to dozens of fights in this arc overall.
Oda started using his cameo fights during the war and it seems he will use them a lot from now. Honestly they are more frustrating than anything. I didn’t enjoy them during the war and this arc proves it once again.
And there is a general consensus to say that the officers fights were underwhelming especially when the answer you had when you say that this arc focus to much on fodders and running was "Oda will deliver amazing fights later just be patient" -
Okay, I apologize for giving a response that I thought needed to be made. Its not like I was trying to offend one's culture or religion. Its not like I have to give an answer with a hundred words of text instead of quoting a phrase from a movie everyone knows. I totally disrespected the rules did I? I recon I am totally guilty. Crucify me.
Since you are getting your panties in a bunch I'll throw in some good things about the arc so you can sleep better at night:
- Some awesome new characters (Bartolomeo, Cavendish, Chinjao fam. etc.)
- The family was the most interesting cast of villains since…I think ever (besides the seats, they can piss off). Baroque works only had All-Sunday and Mr. 1,2,3 and CP9 wasn't interesting asides from Lucci and Jyabs.
- Doflamingo greatness
- Art is Oda in prime. Pica was the most beautiful think I ever seen Oda has drawn
- Kaido intro. Only person who can take Doffy's GOAT title away
- Law's flashback lived up to hype
Though I will say, if I listed the negatives it would be more than 5 times as long. Don't wanna give you an aneurysm though.

They are nothing more then a means to an end, everything around it is what sets One Piece apart. Problem was the running/fighting went on for way too long so we got less One Piece defining moments at the latter half of the arc.
