Chapter 796: The Soldiers Decision

Nice chapter. I kinda knew Kaido wasn't going to show up again, we need to wrap up Dressrosa before developing his arc.
There were a few funny scenes, especially with Sengoku.
I think he was high. His suspicious plastic bag, clothing pattern and uncontrollable laughter are all the clues we need. LOL -
The biggest issue with a new recruit joining (and it might be me nitpicking here) is that not every Strawhat has had the chance to interact with any one character in this arc, like all the candidates that are popular, Viola met Sanji, Luffy, to an extent Robin, Ussop, Franky maybe? Bartolomeo hasn't met them all, Cavendish has had even less interaction with them, mostly Luffy and Robin, Rebecca mostly Luffy, Kyros mostly Luffy and Franky (while being toy soldier) oh and Robin too. Like I know the Alabasta parallel had Robin barge her way in to the crew but I'm sure everyone saw her and spoke to her at one point prior to her joining. I can't see anyone here being yanked onto the Strawhat ship without everyone being informed and unanimously agreeing, albeit they fully trust Luffy and he is their captain. If we follow this pattern only Kinemon and Momonosuke have a good chance, if Bartolomeo continues to their next island with them and realizes his dream of seeing them altogether then maybe he'll have a good chance thereafter. No one is joining imminently, that's just the feeling I get so I hope no one is holding their breath to see if someone joins in the next couple of chapters. (I know all about Jinbei's situation, I've deliberately missed him out).
People shouldn't turn patterns into rules. If we go by that, Jinbe can't join because a fishman never joined. Robin couldn't join because a previous enemy never joined before that. Franky couldn't join because a blue haired person never joined.
Every member so far has interacted with the others before joining, it doesn't mean it is a rule that every person must abide by if they want to join.To be fair, I think the main problem with someone joining is the fact all the contenders' personalities are terribly generic. Rebecca, Kyros, Bellamy… none of them is unique. Kyros and Bellamy are just the serious loyal guy, Rebecca is just the "base female OP personality" without any trait added to it. Bartolomeo is the only one with a personality that stands out, but I can't see him joining too.
I am not saying that this keeps them from joining, just that I hope it doesn't happen. Specially with Jinbe coming soon and he already not quite filling the "unique personality" criteria.

But that's the thing I wasn't pointing out any characteristic or quirk about a character that automatically qualifies them as being good contenders I was talking about a thing that is ALWAYS the case for a new recruit and that is all members are present when it happens, not ruling out of course the off chance Oda strays from his own conventions but you can't tell me when Sanji joined Zoro, Ussop and Nami weren't there or when Nami joined Luffy Zoro Sanji and Ussop weren't there or when Franky joined that all his recruits up until that point including Robin weren't present. You're countering what I said with race and appearance differences I don't see how it relates to the matter at hand at all.

So no chapter next week?
Correct, there is no chapter next week.
Also, anyone noticed what it says on Ussop's shorts in the colorspread? "Lie turns into reality" I find that badass, he's definitely going to be a brave warrior of the sea after the Elbaf arc, methinks.

I'm not sure the interaction with all the SH is needed anymore. I mean, when chopper joined the crew, Ussop or Zoro never talk to him before Luffy asking him. And the next island, Chopper and Ussop fight together and they're like best buddies now.
Same with Franky, Zoro didn't have interaction with him before he became a Straw Hat. He was the guy who stole the money and destroy Ussop. Then a Enies Lobby he helped them and build their boat after.
I think the most important thing to take in count is, does Luffy like this guy and does he'll be good in the team. So Rebecca can't because she surely be useless in the event to come (war against Kaidou). But Bartolomeo is completely fine i think. Cavendish too. Viola too. Bellamy as well.
After that, do they need to be in the crew ? Viola i don't think so, but in the Dressrosa story, she was ready to leave the island : http://www.mangapanda.com/one-piece/723/9
Bartolomeo would love that, Bellamy will maybe make Luffy is new idol and for Cavendish, he could find glory in the war against Kaidou (but i suppose this could better as an ally and not as SH).And for Cavendish and Bartolomeo, they don't have much background. But for Cavendish, there is lot of stuff to find with his double personnality.
-
Neh, Kyros's defining character trait has always been guilt. He felt so guilty for killing those thugs that he was afraid to touch his daughter even years later, and he's been holding on to the guilt of not being able to protect his loved ones since Doflamingo's attack. Luffy's business will be as much teaching Kyros to forgive himself as it will be revealing his role to the citizens. I think their acceptance of him will play a big role in it too.
That's ignoring the psychological damage you can do to a child by treating her such. She may think it's her. Who cares about your dark past, you're a FATHER NOW, it's your moral obligation to BE THERE FOR HER. Get over your own crap and just be there for her.
edit: I'd rather have a dwarf or one of the MANY other characters that got more attention than kyros in this arc to join.

Yeah, maybe not a positive interaction of them getting along but they were still "present" when Luffy formally invited them onto the ship, no? That's what I'm trying to get at here, they should be there to at least see it happening, imagine he recruits someone now and then they reunite with the swirly lot at Zou or wherever and Luffy is like, "Oh, here's our new comrade" the execution would feel a little disjointed (though admittedly could invoke some hilarious reactions from them).

Yeah that feel a little akward, so we need to wait that the SH are reunite for Luffy to ask a new crew member. But they can do like the alliance with Law
Zoro : "Why is he coming with us ?"
Luffy : "Oh yeah, didn't tell you, we're ally now".But i feel like the next Straw Hat would be someone who help others SH in the next chapter. Like Ceasar or Momo atm ^^

I'm not saying he's in the right. Kyros is a very flawed character who frequently feels inadequate or unworthy and tries to overcompensating in other ways. Remember him ordering Rebecca to never fight because he would do it instead? That's not really that great of parenting.
However, it's entirely consistent with his character to still have not forgiven himself. If anything, he may have gotten used to not being remembered and wants to continue working from the background. From what he know about his character, it's unsurprising Kyros still considers himself unworthy.
He's the Hero of Dressrosa. It's time for Luffy to drag him into the light.
-
Kyros being royal was a rumor he created himself. It is not true. It was made to make the public acknowledge Rebecca as a legitimate princess.
I understand Kyros made up the lie, I'm saying that it's going to turn out to be true.
-
You know after thinking about it for a second I actually DON'T think Luffy's "unfinished business" is speaking to Rebecca (perse; it'll still happen of course) and it obviously isn't Fujitora. I'm going to go with the less popular theory that Luffy IS about to claim Dressrosa as his territory. Reason being, Riku has reapetedly mentioned his fear of another Doflamingo situation (and we were even reminded again in even this chapter!) and how his pacifism would make it difficult to protect the island. We also know that brokers ARE pissed and interested in sacking Dressrosa further once the marines leave. As well, Fujitora mentioned the marines will never be heroes in that country and Luffy is obviously popular with the people. And lo and behold we also have an intercom where Gats is at.
It's perfect set-up for Luffy to claim the island. It would protect Dressrosa AND Riku wouldn't have to compromise his pacifism. We even have marines ready to spread the news quickly via newspapers so all threats will be aware of the claim immediatedly. I also think we're going to see the alliance expand as well and for everyone to know Luffy is supported by the Happou navy, Barto, etc. I'm not so sure they'll stick around for Kaidou but I can definitely see them protecting Dressrosa (and Luffy's future territories) when neccessary.
Rebecca and Kyros? I don't know what the hell is going to happen there. Obviously Luffy and Rebecca are going to talk, I do NOT see Rebecca becoming a princess and Dressrosa will find out Kyros is the real daddy (
and he'll have to pay child support) but how exactly that all will play out and what the fallout will be I don't know. Should be fun either way.~ -

Uhhh after 10+ years of not having your daughter recognize you, you'd think even with the flaws he wouldn't pull this bullsh*t. There's flaw characters and then there's drawing out the flaws to make the character not believable or relatable at all.

It worked for Fishman Island because it's relatively isolated and not currently a member of the World Government, but Dressrosa has its standing to maintain. Declaring it his territory would probably end up causing more problems for the Rikus.
I could see him making a threat against future pirate attacks, maybe even saying he'll protect the island, but I think everyone present recognizes that the national army and the Marines need to be the primary defenders. Besides, the role of protector of the country is cpearly going to Kyros.
-
Zoro's "El que ríe último, ríe mejor"… and now Usopp's "Lie turns into reality", nice catchphrases Oda, really matching his characters.
Get the fuck out of this island, please. Tsuru has cute pants.

Don't get too worked up. The issue is precisely one of the things that should get addressed in the upcoming chapter or two.
Still not as bad as Usopp using and abandoning the Tontatta only to eventually save them.

They're doing a bang-up job protecting their image by openly praising Luffy. =P
Also Kyros alone wouldn't be able to protect the country from the several nations that are now pissed at Dressrosa. They can't keep an admiral posted there 24/7.
Also it shouldn't affect Reverie meetings since FI itself had a giant ass Big Mom flag posted up and they still expected to go.
-
Can Kanjuro create devil fruits with his ability? lol if he can createbir birds, maybe he can create fruits with portion of the ability missing.
-
Beautiful color page. Oda has always drawn water beautifully.
I liked this chapter. Been waiting for something like this for ages. Lighthearted, character-focused, character interactions, the marines not being incompetent villains, SENGOKU AND TSURU, Bellamy reminding me why I always did like him ever since Jaya, Manshelly being alright, even Fuji being alright again… I'm more content than I've been in ages.
-
Law gets a thought panel dedicated to shock about Sengoku, I sense a touchy feely moment incoming.
I assume Garpgoku doesn't know that Doffy killed Corazon because he'd probably be more solemn, instead he's having the time of his fucking life right now. Is retirement that fun?
If your work is like hell on earth in terms of daily stress and you simply can't quit because you have certain debts to pay and/or goals to achieve that a lower paying job wouldn't be able to provide then I say… yeah:you truly may bet on it.
I'm not an old dog like Sengoku but I dream with my retirement every day and intend to achieve it very soon.May Enel be on my side.
A nice chapter,by the way. -
Nice drawback, it would be amazing if she was actually related to ace. Would the brothers add a sister to the three cups? The daughter of roger on luffys crew? The marines would go crazy to get the pirate kings, current son and pirate king of the pasts grandson. Nami D. Roger/Rose
Or Gol D. Nami since she loves gold.
ODA IS A GOD

Most of the threat to Dressrosa originates either from Doflamingo, who's being taken away, or as an opportunity to seize the arms he'd been trading, which should have been/will be removed by either the Revolutionaries or the Marines. There's not many other reasons to attack.
I imagine Fishman Island would have swapped flags if they entered the World Government. It seems hard to believe that Akainu would let member countries openly claim equal protection from a Yonkou. It's one thing for small, independent countries to seek protection from a Yonkou and quite another for a country to tell you your protection is insufficient and seek additional help from an ememy.
-
Hmm? This is how i remember it, i do not think that there was a day between Fishman Island and Punk Hazard, i may be mistaken though:
Day 1: FMI and Punk Hazard
Day 2: Dressrosa
Day 5: Dressrosa aftermath and tea partyDeparture and FMI were day 1 (Tamago said 4 days during the party), they left FMI and arrived at Punk Hazard on day 2, and Dressrosa was day 3. The Swirly Hats were shown on day 4 last chapter, and now Luffy and Co. are still on Dressrosa 2 days after that. So we're on day 6.
Here's a timeline. well, one that points out that FMI and Punk Hazard are on separate days.
-
@The:
Actually 195.000.000
European numbering is interesting.
In US you write 195,000,000.
To me you mean $195, to you, i mean $195
-
Like father like son, Luffy most allies are wearing hoodie over head and sneaking around just like most revolutionary army guy we see.
-
Luffy is going to cut off Kyros's other leg. And tell him that he did that so you can stop running away. You're a father now!
-
I think people are hypberoling they said Rebecca looked better in a dress rather than that armor she was wearing. They didn't say that girls looked better in dresses. I kind of agree she looks better in a dress rather than that horrid armor.
Agree might have well have said dresses look better than being practically naked in probably cold uncomfortable armor
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Also I'm seeing marines will say hey strawhat luffy is a pirate, and the citizens saying " we're talking about LUUUCCCYYYY "
-
-
Well here's a basic timeline so far
Day 1: Straw hats reunite, Conflict at Fishman Island.
Day 2: Caime is working again which indicates the next day since she was off work the previous one.
- Pekoms and Tamago leave.
- Punk Hazard Arc
Day 3: Dressrosa conflict
Day 4: Twirlyhat pirates on mysterious island. Kaido suicide attempt.
Day 5: Tea Party occurs. Bomb explodes in Big Mom's face.
Day 6: Now. Strawhats leaving Dressrosa.
Oda will definitely backtrack here because he wouldn't have mentioned the tea party if it wasn't important. Plus the Bomb box would have exploded in her face.

Luffy is coming back for wicca:happy:

This is the only panel that got me a bit worried. What IS HE implying?
-
People, Luffy forgot to claim Dressrosa as his turf - that's the unfinished business he has!
-
I was hoping this chapter would reveal the mystery of the current status of Sengoku's goat. Sadly its whereabouts remains unknown.
-
Luffy is coming back for wicca:happy:
Correction= Luffy is going back to get Wicca since Zoro needs his personal navigator to get around.

The biggest issue with a new recruit joining (and it might be me nitpicking here) is that not every Strawhat has had the chance to interact with any one character in this arc, like all the candidates that are popular, Viola met Sanji, Luffy, to an extent Robin, Ussop, Franky maybe? (I know all about Jinbei's situation, I've deliberately missed him out).
It seems like we have a couple people tagging along to the next island, so I'd just wait until then. I am curious if Viola will come along at the last minute. She already planned on leaving, is said to be extremely passionate, and that rumor about "Scarlet running away with a Prince to an island" sounds like it also serves as a hint drop that she plans on fleeing with everyone and meeting up with Sanji. It's just hard because Oda sidelined her character to hard about halfway through the arc that she only made appearances when it was necessary to the plot.
If Luffy is about to be surrounded by Marine strengths like Admiral Fujitora, Former Fleet Admiral Sengoku, and Vice Admiral Tsuru then Viola might be of assistance with her clairvoyance.
-
I know its been said before but the maid saying "girls look a lot better in dresses than armour" just ticked me off. I can live with the sexism because it's part of the territory with most Shounen but argh that line! Remember that colour spread with Robin in full plate armour? She looked amazing and badass! Sorry just letting off some steam. It would have been better if she said Rebecca looks better in a dress since she's a pacifist but all girls in general ugh!

currently luffy doesn't have the military assets to protect the island. What the yonkous have are many crews under their command, that's what enemies like the WG have to contend with if they were to go against the yonkous.
post stress? I guess all that stress from luffy's appearance and fighting the war = gray hair.
Some of the allies Luffy gained might. Also bear in mind I'm talking about his name and the pirate flag simply scaring people away, not whether or not actual defense would work
-

Not gonna get in between and say who's right or wrong but I would just like to point out besides the actual internal conflict he's had, this is actually another portrayal of what Haki is and how it relates to fear and reputation. Kyros has killed someone, it was an act of revenge for his friend (if I recall) and he has served his "sentence" but whether or not he tries to act or is generally a friendly person, it doesn't change the fact on how the public cannot help but fear him from his past deed. If you'd like, you can read my thread under "Appearance and Reputation". Oda knows what he's doing though so we'll see what happens.. though I am reminded of that line in Kyros' flashback that barbarity in the outside world is potential in the Colosseum.
It's likely that Luffy plans to elevate Kyros into a hero or something, that way him stealing the statue for keeps would have more impact. Oh and guys, are we already forgetting Rebecca's wish to live with her father? It's not that Kyros is wrong but you can bet he also wants to live with her. Luffy is a pirate for reasons like this and if they're leaving before Luffy sees her wish through then he would really be an asshole then.
–---------------------------
By the way, who here is up for a game? I was gonna post some of this down eventually but instead of the usual explanations, I figured it'd be fun as a game (either that or my definition of 'fun' is off). This will be a question and answer deal and it'll cover (exaggerated) science and/or spirituality.
Three (simple enough) questions! (Oh and these aren't jokes lol)
[Exaggerated Science]
1. Why hasn't Sanji gotten lung cancer?[Exaggerated Science AND Spirituality]
2. This would technically only be exaggerated science but to avoid any copying (just in case) I'm gonna be adding and ask 'the purpose' to cover the spirituality. So the question is Why does Zoro and Sanji only have one eye and what's the purpose? Oh and just in case anyone is thinking it, forget the "left hand & right hand" of the King stuff, that's obvious. Also, the spiritual meaning of "the left being the shield and the right where the manifestation of Ki comes from", not that either.[Spirituality]
3. Excluding Luffy, where does the "flaws" of the Straw Hats derived from? If no one decides to play, well that's that, but if anyone gets all three answers correct, they'll earn my respect. (I really wish I have a cookie or a star to give.. and sorry but I can't give my LIFELONG respect since it's just simple questions.)By the way, I'll try and reply every couple of answers.
Good luck.

Others have already replied to that but I will say this, character dialogue isn't Oda, that said, those handmaidens also made a point to say that Rebecca's father is a prince and other BS. Try to get the context, not take one line from it. If anything, some people have reacted differently saying that line is a hint to Rebecca definitely not choosing to be a Princess/Queen.
Plus, that armor was skimpy.
-
Claiming Dressrosa as his land and a clash with Fujitora? Possibly?
-
I don't think Dressrosa is the kind of place that would be a pirate's turf again.
-
Calling it now! Rebecca will join the Strawhats due to Luffy's Nakama powers… And the will of Deez Nuts!
Ha! We predated that meme before that guy even did on Facebook. :) (There is an actual group on Facebook called The Will of Deez Nutz.) I used to be one of them in that club. ;)

I love you Sengoku! Enjoy your semi-retirement, buddy. Nice to see Tsuru looking more badass. I remember her looking more short old lady-ish.
We still haven't got the arc ending party. Guess it's happening on the escape ship.
-
I haven't read through the thread to check if it's been mentioned - but i think the straw hats will be leaving on the marine battle ship the dwarfs beached when we first saw green bit.

this is news to me, because I've noticed Oda does this to all bags or sacks throughout the series, I just thought it was a random thing he does…
