'American torturers told me they would rape my daughter to get confession,' claims Britain's last Guantanamo Bay prisoner Shaker Aamer
This reads like a torture scene for Theon Greyjoy but it's real and thus 100% more fucked up.

I've been wanting to congragulate Bruce on his or her transformation for a while. But there is one thing that I can't help but wonder:
If Bruce like women, does that make him or her a homosexual? Or do you become a homosexual if you prefer men after becoming the baddest female in the Kardashian clan? If Cat prefer males however, the perfect match would of course be Young Thug. Just think about it: two strong, independent women in a clan of strong, independent women. Also, if Thugger gets included in the Kardashian family, maybe that opens a possibility for Tyga Simpson to have dialogue with Birdman Sandusky yet again over the whole Lil Wayne issue. -
Does anyone know if the site Raw Story is legitimate news site?
This story is a few days old (June 1) and seriously fucked up…
"A website that gives sex advice to married Christians argues that women can never give their spouses “a flat no” when asked for sex because “her body does belong to her husband.” …. Although the author insists that he would not advocate “for a husband to force himself physically upon his wife,” he says that “a Christian wife should never give her husband a flat no, BUT she can humbly and gently ask for a delay.”
And any request for a delay “must be done humbly and respectfully, and always with the attitude in mind that her body does belong to her husband.”“But I will say this, despite American laws to the contrary, Biblically speaking, there is no such thing as ‘marital rape,'” the writer continues. “In the Scriptures, the only way rape occurs is if a man forces himself on a woman who is not his property (not his wife, or concubine). A man’s wives, his concubines (slave wives taken as captives of war or bought) could be made to have sex with him, no questions asked.”
“I realize this entire scenario is appalling to our modern western notions, but I choose to not challenge God’s wisdom in the laws he gave. If you want to argue with God about this at the judgement, be my guest.”
"The whole thing is stupid but the bolded really got me. Someone should remind him of some of the laws in the bible … like he can't mix fabrics in his clothing(Lev 19:19)! And no trimming of the beard(Lev19:19) And since he choose not to challenge God's wisdom in the laws... he better ask if the fruit he eats had came from a tree planted no less than 4 years before the picking of said fruit (its forbidden, Eating fruit from a tree within four years of planting it (Lev19:23) )

I love it wen people decide to be 100% faithful to bible rules on occassions it agrees with em… but are willing to agree stuff like stoning, or killing someone for working on sunday, or selling 12 years olds into prostution are bad ideas.
You can't pick and choose guys. its either all 100% to be followed... or it means times moved on and you need to make some exceptions because some of the bible as some really bad stuff in it.
I've never understood why not just make a new new testament for a more modern age a few centuries later. Retcon in some "7 days creation is a metaphor, not literal, and there were some dinosaurs" just to deal with that crap forever and get creationism out of the classroom.
Get the awesome new pope on that.

What a nutter. A legal nutter mind you, but a nutter nonetheless.
Not if you want them to vote Republican, because pseudo-crazy intimidation crap like this is exactly what's pushing the Millennials away.
What baffles me the most about this story (aside from the whole need to carry an AR-15 into an airport of course) is why the fuck this guy has a drum magazine. There is literally zero use for that other than killing lots of people very quickly.
-
According to the poll down below it's about 50/50 on the should you get to carry an assault rifle into an airport question.
I had to take a minute to let that sink in.
-
I am for rights and all … but this is just too much.
There is no reason why a civilian should have semi-automatic to begin with much less parading around in an airport.
It would make me feel safer if nuts like him was in a straight-jacket and a muzzle but that doesn't mean its right to do so -
He's clearly exercising his right to be a showboating idiot so let it be know, as it is his obvious wish, that this man is an idiot.
-
Apparently he didn't get past the security part of the airport where guns are still banned
Open carry is the most ridiculous bullshit ever tbh. Nobody carries a gun like that "for safety", they get off on people's reactions to them coming in a public building with a big gun. Its the new small penis compensation

I don't know anything about that website, but yes marital rape is considered nonexistant…by most societies that are stuck a mere 50 years ago.
It's a relatively new concept in spite of the obviousness of it's existence, and any conservative religious anything is likely still denying it. -

@Mr.:
So Erdogan's party lost their majority in the Turkish parliament, and the Kurdish party now has seats in it for the first time.
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-33042284Nice to know that Erdogan hasn't completely Putinized Turkey yet.
This election dodged exactly that Putin bullet. Erdogan would have used that majority to push some legislation making the presidency into some super position.
But a lot of chickens have been coming home to roost for him, I imagine unless he pulls some sort of coup that this was the high water mark for him and he's going to be on his way down.
The Kurdish party won what it did btw for two reasons mainly.
1. Kurds used to vote for Erdogan many of them, conservative ones, but his incompetent bumbling toward the Syrian Kurds shot this in the foot. As well as his incompetent bumbling toward the Turkish Kurd IRA type group peace process.
2. It broadened it's appeal beyond Kurds, it's basically trying to shape itself into a actual modern left wing party as opposed to the crusty old left wing Nationalist (Kemalist) Party. This is good news for Turkey, Syria, Cyprus, Armenia and everyone around the neighborhood really.
Meanwhile in Syria, the Syrian Kurds are executing a plan to cut off ISIS's main supply and recruitment road from Turkey. Which would be a severe blow.
As strong as the media keeps saying they are, their main weakness continues to be that they're landlocked territory wise. Turkey's border is their lifeline, cut that off definitively and they will weaken drastically. A wall of Kurds would do the trick. Also because the Kurds are the only good faction in Syria of any relevance anymore.
Otherwise it's the Alawite Government butchers, Vanilla Islamist Dominated rebel groups, and ISIS. -
lol Erdogan. I hope he enjoys cutting ribbons and visiting foreign leaders to suck up to them, because that's all he'll be doing for the coming years.

The justice system in this country is great compared to some others and that's really worrying because the justice system in this country is shit. What the hell is 3 years in Rikers for "allegedly" stealing a backpack? Even if he did do it that's supposed to be what…? A fine? 1 day in jail? I don't know, but if the case takes 3 years to get through court might as well let the boy wait for his trial or whatever at home where he belongs. Expedite minor cases like that because that's completely ridiculous, and in this case it was fatal. Maybe his death will actually change a little something. The boy's life shouldn't be a sacrifice for change but it's the least that could happen.

Sadly, the cynic in me doubts that this will cause anything to change.
I have to say, too, it's a bit of a jarring coincidence to come here to see that posted. I literally just finished watching a John Oliver piece on bail, and how messed up that system is.

De Blasio started to reform how people are held in jail but I'm not optimistic any big changes will happen anytime sooner. I mean we'll only talking about New York imagine everywhere else.

Well, mayor de Blasio already put in orders to implement changes in the court system which would speed up cases like Kalief's and this article about those initiatives was written before Kalief killed himself.
@article:
Kalief Browder, now twenty-one years old, lives at home and takes classes at Bronx Community College. When I called him last night to tell him the news about the Mayor’s reform plans, he had just arrived home from school on his bicycle. “That’s great,” he said. “Because the way I remember it, that was crazy. Very, very crazy. Every three months was a different court date.” Even he seemed to have a hard time believing what he had lived through: the thirty-one court dates, all those trips he made from Rikers to the Bronx courthouse and back to Rikers again. The memory seemed to discourage him for a moment, but no longer. “I feel good that I spoke up and got my story out there,” he said, “so the public could know what goes on in Rikers Island and the court system.”
If his tragic story which motivated de Blasio to take steps in the first place doesn't help push initiative to actually get through then his tragic death should add more weight to the situation and really help to make some kind of lasting change. Unfortunately, tragic death doesn't always = positive change but, you know, sometimes it does.
Incidentally Browder could've gotten out of jail a lot earlier for $10,000 family couldn't pay it.
That's a lot of backpacks.

Recent new in Brazil:
Viviany Beleboni, actress, 26, is a transsexual, spiritualist and shocked participants of the 19th LGBT Pride Parade on Sunday (7). She held the cross, staging the suffering of Jesus, to "represent aggression and pain that the LGBT community has past." "I never intended to attack the church. The idea was to protest against homophobia". She said.

Still can't figure why people are so god damn butthurt about gays/lesbos? If person feels its natural to him to love and feel attraction to same sex person then whats the fuckin problem? If its natural to yourself then its perfectly fine and healthy to be true to yourself… I don't know why people can be homophobic when its clearly so irrational fear... people should love who they want and if both feel same way then its their own god damn business, if people can't accept it then f*ck them and their prejudice...
God damn sometimes I don't know if we are living in 2015 or 1115...

It's bullshit, but the fact that people can believe in such stupid things "in this age" doesn't surprise me. It could be 3015 and I wouldn't be surprised to see people bitching about equally retarded things. That being said, if those people who don't believe in gay marriage just don't act like assholes about it (harass them, actively act against them, or hurt them) than I don't have a problem with them. Sure I might not agree with their way of thinking, but it can be overlooked. For example; I might not agree with my grandparents political or religious views, but I will never hate them or disown them for it.

And yet, as the world becomes less homophobic and more accepting of LGB people, rates of murder of Trans people continue to skyrocket.
As being gay becomes more and more accepted, the bigots are finding another place to lash out, and it's against us….

Not to mention the rates of homelessness and suicide attempts among the trans community. Along with the media and news sources' tendency to mis-gender or victim blame those who have been murdered or have gone missing.
As much as I'd love to think otherwise with all of the positive attention that we're getting lately, we've got a long way to go in terms of the generalization of trans acceptance.
-
Oh, without a doubt we still have a long way to go when it comes to the general perception and treatment of the LGBT community. A loooong way to go but this is our future.
As hammy as that is that is the reality of the future generations. Of course there will be kids raised differently but it would be hard for me to say the numbers would favor intolerance. I'm simply speaking about kids in America at least. This is also coming from personal experience since I work with kids 5 days a week and they are generally a lot more accepting and educated on these issues than when I was a child. They have to be since a good number of the kids in the school have students with same sex parents.

Forgive the ramblings of a cisgender pleb like myself, but I'm curious on something. It's one thing to observe from the internet and media, but I myself haven't met a transgender person in real life.
Although, isn't that the idea? You're not supposed to "know" unless the individual feels comfortable enough to tell you, correct?
Apologies if my question or phrasing is too forward, but I dislike offending people. …food for thought, are there situations where a person is talking but they're extremely nervous, not wanting to use the wrong pronoun, and as such, their talking becomes slited?
-

That would be the ideal, yes. Or at least, my ideal. I can't really speak for every transgender person nor do I intend to.
But inevitably, some people will know or find out. Particularly those who knew you before your transition. Family, friends, coworkers, employers, doctors, bankers, neighbors, employees at stores that you visit regularly; a good deal of people are going to know. And odds are that a portion of those people won't like the idea of a transgender person.
And that's not even mentioning the awkward period before changing your I.D. or passport. And some places won't even allow the gender marker on such documents to be changed unless you've had Gender Reassignment Surgery which 1) is incredibly expensive and 2) not every transgender person opts for anyway.
I'm sure that someone else could explain this much better than I ever could, though.
And I also don't want to gloss over what Outerspec stated. Future generations should (fingers crossed) be so much more accepting of the LGBT community and hopefully in the upcoming years things like the illegality of homosexual marriages or the denial of services by certain companies to the LGBT community will officially be done away with.
-
Although, isn't that the idea? You're not supposed to "know" unless the individual feels comfortable enough to tell you, correct?
I can't fully agree with that. It really depends on the person. A lot of trans folks like to own the fact that they don't fit into a paradigm, which is where you see new gender pronouns cropping up that clearly reject of the gender binary.
I think the ideal case is really for it not to matter. Gender identity shouldn't be a thing and some differences in genitalia shouldn't limit your expression nor how others treat you in non-sexual contexts where the concavity of your inner-thighs doesn't matter.
-
Augh why do I open my mouth. This is all out of my element ;_;

So the situation really does vary from person to person? Makes sense.
I only brought it up because of my personal fears…..it's all something I am trying to understand as best as I can (although yes, there's only so much I can get as cisgender)....I just don't want to commit a faux pas or something in real life.
....now I'm sounding like a fool guys, sorry.
-
It's fine. So long as you're willing to learn, I don't think anyone will make fun of you. Some folks may be more sensitive, but the people who are really problematic are the ones that don't change. I've seen those guys argue with trans folks about how misgendering them is for their own good and it's horrible. You're not like that, though, and I'm sure if you made a mistake, you would be quick to correct it.
-
Forgive the ramblings of a cisgender pleb like myself, but I'm curious on something. It's one thing to observe from the internet and media, but I myself haven't met a transgender person in real life.
But the internet is real life!
You've casually talked to a bunch of trans folks on the forum and probably not realized… its really not a big deal.
Once they switch, yes, you should refer to them by their chosen pronoun. He it he, she, or ve. Whatever. And their new name, obviously.
Slipups can happen, especially if you knew them for a long time prior, but generally, just treat them as what they want to be. One of my very best friends is trans, so I've got a fair amount of experience with this, and I knew them for years before they switched over. It was no surprise that it was coming, and took a little while to officially get used to, name especially, but I instinctively always use the proper pronoun and name now.
(the helpful thing for them is after the change, they keep meeting new people that never knew them otherwise or by their previous name, and those people accept their name and gender easily.)
-

Hmm….in hindsight, you're kinda right. I've seen pictures and stuff, and I don't think I've misgendered someone here before. Certainly didn't change my opinion when I found out. Just more cool people that like the same geeky things I do. :)

I suppose it can be pingponged back to the recent transgender development - even as a celebrity I've never met, I've always used "Caitlyn Jenner" when talking to others about the story, not the name she used to have. and I think she was quite attractive on that cover
(the helpful thing for them is after the change, they keep meeting new people that never knew them otherwise or by their previous name, and those people accept their name and gender easily.)

Whenever I hear someone whining about how today's culture is too 'politically correct' cough Jerry Seinfeld cough like 'oh noes cis people can't have opinions now cos' those evil INTOLERANT trans people are gonna accuse them of CISPLAINING' (obviously not this strawmanny but you get the point) I just point to asshole incidents like these bolded ^ in why trans folk may not feel comfortable in discussion with us CIA folk.

But yeah, Meta, you're pretty friendly even for a forum like this, as long as you don't take the "I know better than you" route (what was it Charles Bukowski said about doubts and idiots of the world…?) you should be fineI think it was Socrates who said something like "the more you know, the more you don't know."
Even when I educate some of my family on proper addressing and stuff, I still know I don't know a lot. So that makes it interesting to keep reading stories and introspectives.
-
My actual quote of reference was: "The problem with the world is that the intelligent people are full of doubts. While the stupid ones are full of confidence" but hey yours works in a more succinct way too.

So long as we're quoting people, I believe that Stephen Covey said something along the lines of "Listen with the intent to understand and not the intent to reply" which you're definitely doing.
The fact that you care enough to ask questions and admit that you're not that familiar with the subject speaks wonders to just how cool of a person you are.
-
Augh why do I open my mouth. This is all out of my element ;_;
Don't you EVER feel bad about being out of your element! It's a good thing to step outside your comfort zone and learn about something you aren't necessarily knowledgeable, and I both applaud you and want to reassure you, nothing you've said or done is upsetting or bad.
Misgendering or messing up names or pronouns are and are not a bad thing depending. If you are just genuinely making a mistake but on the whole are trying to treat someone right, that's fine. You kinda have to be TRYING to be a jerk to be a jerk.
Being misgendered can be disheartening tho…. I have major self esteem issues and last night has me thinking they might stem from this..... I was at a party last night and a guy misgendered me, he called me "He" at the party.... and it almost made me cry. I like to think I actually look like my gender, IE Female, so having a stranger whom I've never met before read me as male and treat me that way without being told I'm trans or something hurt.... a LOT..... and events like that aren't an isolated incident... so it tends to get me down... it reinforces the idea in my head that I'm ugly and have a manface..... and that tends to drag me down. Also, dating is really hard. When rarely a guy asks me out, if I tell him I'm trans that usually makes him run for the hills, and that destroys me every time it happens....
Sorry, I'm rambling now, but basically, that's why misgendering can hurt.
But don't worry, you're doing fine, you're great Meta! ^_^
