Chapter 763: Human Declaration

I have to disagree, a baby is always cuter than some lil' kid.
If the lil kid is cute (which I do agree Baby 5 is), that just means the baby is even cuter.…unless you take the Harry Potter world into account for baby Dudley will always turn 'cute baby' theme on its head and reveals the monsters

Anyone see this little essay on Manga Stream about this weeks chapter? I'll put the whole thing in the spoiler below.
! Hello there everyone, voxanimus again. You were all so kind in your comments on my last blog post that I thought I'd do another one. Well, that and this week's One Piece chapter has yet again a lot of stuff I want to talk about. I think.
! Anyway, let's get the more lighthearted stuff out of the way. Several characters' full names were revealed this week, and I wanted to give some background on the references contained therein. Corazon's real name is Rocinante, or the name of Don Quixote's horse in the eponymous book. Law's name contains two references to the Napoleonic Wars: the Battle of Trafalgar is a naval engagement in which British forces led by Horatio Lord Nelson sunk 22 French ships without losing a single of their own. "Water Law" is a transliteration of the Japanese pronunciation of "Waterloo," the name of the battle in which Napoleon was defeated once and for all. Japanese has a habit of using the native pronunciation of a word when adopting it into Japanese; the Belgian pronunciation of Waterloo is closer to "Water Law." This means that transcriptions of the name as "Watel" and the like are clearly wrong. On the heels of this fact, I would like to make a request to all of you readers. Please refrain from commenting other scanlation groups' translations—be it of names, attacks, or dialogue—in the Mangastream comments section. I find it disrespectful to not only my work but that of our other translators. We spend no small amount of time and effort trying to come up with the most faithful and appropriate renderings we can of these manga, and to ignore that work is not very nice, to say the least.
! Now, let's talk a little about the main underlying reference of this week's chapter. Again, though, to understand it, we need a bit of historical background.
! Following Japan's defeat in World War II, the Allied Forces insisted, as part of the war reparations, that Japan move away from its imperial government and towards a more democratic one. Pursuant to this goal, Emperor Hirohito was required to issue a statement officially renouncing his status as living god, which would thereby decrease his monarchical right to sovereignty and pave the way for the writing of a new Japanese Constitution that would formally enshrine democratic power as the de facto arbiter of Japanese politics. The Emperor and the Japanese royal family would remain as mere symbols of the Japanese government, with little real power. The name of this declaration was 人間宣言 (にんげんせんげん, ningen sengen), which means "declaration of humanity." Sound familiar?
! It is certainly very evident that Doflamingo's father's descent from the Holy Land and attendant renunciation of holy status is at least superficially similar to that performed by Emperor Hirohito following World War II. But the similarities do not run as deep as they did last week. Doffy's father's reverse apotheosis, if you will, caused his family to fall into ruin, as they were preyed upon by those they used to rule. Yet, on the other hand, Hirohito's renunciation of divinity was, at least in the long run, a very good thing for Japan. It allowed for the appointment of a Japanese Prime Minister and governance power to rest almost wholly in the hands of the three branches of the Japanese government.
! In truth, though, Japan was actually occupied by Allied forces (in effect, the United States) and the majority of the governmental and economic reforms implemented following the war were done so at the behest or even command of the occupying forces. While it is probably not disputable that the long-term consequences of Allied occupation of Japan were beneficial, the attitude of the average Japanese citizen towards the occupation itself is less clear-cut. Some believed that the somewhat ham-fisted occupation's use of power hearkened back to the pre-Meiji days of the shogunate.
! Ultimately, I cannot say whether or not Oda is trying to critique, using Doflamingo's family as a foil, the treatment of Japan at the hands of America following the Japanese emperor's renunciation of holiness. I was neither alive during the occupation period nor have I been to Japan and had a chance to talk with Japanese people about this. In addition, attitudes toward these sort of political issues vary from generation to generation, and I know not which generation's reaction Oda is calling upon. What do you think? Leave your opinion, or any suggestions or feedback, in the comments below.
! Stay frosty, friends.
! - voxanimusFirst part is the stuff that was mentioned at the beginning of the this thread. Nice references, but really doesn't add anything overall to the story.
My problem is what most of the stuff is about. I think something like this came up last chapter thread, but I don't like it when someone takes an event and tries to make it fit in the context of the chapter. It seems to just be blatantly trying to add more than there is. I will admit, the stuff does seem to fit, but it seems to be more of a coincidence of a few details that seem to fit. If the whole arc could fit into this theme/concept, then that would be fine. Trying to say one chapter is supposed to represent this idea seems crazy to me. I dislike it when Bleach fans do it, I dislike it when One Piece fans do it, I just dislike it in general.
Part of this probably stems from back in my Lit. classes back in High School, where I was terrible at identifying these types of things. However, from the stuff I read it was themes from the whole book, not a chapter or a few paragraphs.

@Skull:
Way to go to miss the point entirely.
What point? Baby 5 y'all talking about? Or Sabo inheriting bro's will?
-
I'm a little late on the review of this chapter, so I shall start:
-A lot of content on Doffy's backstory was revealed. So many questions need to be answered. Oda is on a roll(as usual)
-Law happens to be a "D", which makes a lot of sense, but it still caught me off guard.
-So Corazon spoke and Doffy seems to hate the "D's"So overall I give it a 9.4/10

I wonder if Law is gonna tell about Will of the D. for Luffy once Doffy is beaten.
Tough I seriously hope not! This is still supposed to be Luffy's adventure. Too early for any destiny crud!

we could discuss how we should name the new unit of cuteness: Baby Dellinger or young Baby 5
Baby Dellinger, no doubt.

Baby 5, Baby Dellinger is a bit annoying. (To me, but still cute.)
what did he do that you find annoying?
-
I am wondering how Law is called. I read Watel, Wartel and Water… Which is it?
And which part has the D? Law or the other? If it's Law we have 2 animals and marshall law as D's... Probably doesn't mean anything though. No matter what anyone translates it as, it's still Trafalgar D. Water Law. Aohige explained this already. And 'D' is the middle name. Water Law stands as a two part first name.

This post is deleted!

Am I the only one wondering what the heck is Enkidude talking about?

what did he do that you find annoying?
Kicking ass while being flawless I guess, man his kid version seems so cute and shit looking at ships getting destroyed, but now he rather destroy things himself with a smug on his face.

for the sake of far more interesting discussion, are you saying you don't see the theme voxanimus (thanks for posting that, btw, The Franky Tank, i would have never read it otherwise) is alluding to?
hah (really, no offense) but maybe you just are bad at noting those nods or homages to similar real life situations?
and who's to say this will be a one chapter thing? obviously it shaped doflamingo's entire life, you could say it's relevant up until we stop talking about it. but oda has made nods like this to completely insignificant characters or moments in the manga, it's not like such a heavy real world topic must be treated equally as important in the manga. although, i'm sure this will have bigger implications down the road… it's not even been a week yet.

Sabo getting the Mera mera fruit totally threw me off. That fruit doesn't fit him in any damn way, it's the first time Oda is giving a character a fruit that doesn't suit his/her personality or looks.
Burn scar, Dragon-themed moves, impulsiveness, history with fire…
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
Doctorine: "I teach him about my medical knowledge"
Medical - of or relating to the science of medicine
Wait, you're saying surgeries aren't medical? What the fuck are you on?
"Surgery - the branch of medicine concerned with treating disease, injuries, etc, by means of manual or operative procedures, esp by incision into the body"
-
what did he do that you find annoying?
I guess I'm being a bit biased, since I see only his older version and compare how he was then and now. He seems just self-obsorbed (older Dellinger), I never got his personality in all truth. So kid version is just the same.
-
That's not what the conversation was.
I said Chopper isn't knowledgeable on surgery because his field is medicine. This isn't "real world" logic. Chopper literally only studies fields relating to medicine. There's nothing saying otherwise.
Pirates get all sorts of injuries? So do people irl, yet there are still different types of doctors. Pirate crews often have more than one doctor.
This isn't like Naruto where they specifically have a name that goes for all ninja who do practice all types of medical science. The fact that we know that surgeons even exist within the series means that there are specialized classes.
What you don't understand is that there will never be a situation where Chopper would perform full on surgery. We have Law for that.
Saying he can do something that he has never done, has never been shown doing, and doesn't study, for absolutely no reason at all, is abysmal.
Next you're going to tell me he's a dentist. You have no reason to believe what you do so debating with me, someone who's going off what the series has shown us, gets you absolutely nowhere. What you personally want believe is irrelevant. Those kids were exposed to numerous chemicals. Chopper could do nothing, but give them sedatives. That's why Law had to step in and cut up their bodies to treat them.
I'm behind you on this.
And to help explain why Law was the one to treat the poisoning was because of:
-
Long Time Exposure. With his DF he could extract the Drug from their blood. I don't know of many medicines that can do that to People and Animals that have been through Long Time Exposure to drugs, poison etc. in a short amount of time.
-
Time. Once they captured Caesar -the Alliance were in a fight against the Clock. They had to get out of Punk Hazard as soon as possible
-
That is all they both could do. Even Law had to leave the rest up to Dr. Vegapunk and the WG
Even Chopper didn't do a thing about Brownbeard (and those henchmens) poisoning. The WG will handle that also
everything all chalks up to time and plot convenience.
~As for Chopper actually performing Surgery.
I do agree that if the Plot demands he performs then HE WILL PERFORM SURGERY. just like that
But we have seen nothing that does suggest that he is a Surgeon (and don't give me that manga: doctors are all purposefull nonsense). All Chopper ever took with him was his bag-full of supplies. Did he get proper medical operating equipment from the Land of the Birds? Is there any on the ship?
I always thought his dream was to Cure any/all Diseases (What the Kids on PH had was not a disease). When things are out of people's expertise -even in Manga- people tend to leave it to others who are more capable.Chopper leaving it to Law- and then both of them leaving it up to Vega and the WG

I do see where he is coming from. He presented the historical context, and applied it to what was shown. Part of it is what you said, I can be bad at picking those up. Another part is I'm wary to pick up on those things, for a few reasons. While he's allowed to make that analysis, to me it doesn't seem to add anything really. At most it would be another nod to some other event. The other thing is one could probably find other events, pick a few details of said event, and put it in the same frame. Biggest reason is that there are fandoms that will go into this territory, but instead of just making that observation, they try to claim the person is being deep and meaningful (This can be really bad in the Bleach fandom).
It could be relevant for more time, but it was mainly based of a few details in only a small portion of the chapter, so I'm less inclined to really think it's actually a thing at this point. If the person took this part of history, and was able to apply it to the arc so far, then I would say it's more likely something.

I instantly knew that Law's name was based on two major historic battles involving Napoleon. However, I read the other references from your earlier post from MS; It could merely be a coincidence, but like you said, it could have significance. I'm still going to label it suggestive instead of persuasive.

Names that are just a reference I don't mind, and there's not really any leeway for arguing. Same for looks as references. The problem is when you are taking a chunk of history and trying to apply it to a piece of work. In those cases, the more points you can connect, the better your case is.

I'm definitely agreeing with you on that point. Right now, like i said before, is only a suggestive plug in from a historical event that may or may not be relevant in this current story. It would have been better for the blogger to include words like: "may" or "might." This way, the readers will be able to discuss whether or not it's relevant, instead of assumptions. I'm not saying it isn't an accurate plug-in of history, but being being over-persuasive has it's downfall too.
-
well i think the term "human declaration" is pretty telling, but i'm sure it will be sorted out in a future sbs. but this chapter's reference, in combination with last weeks, both being obvious japanese cultural references, most likely sit outside the realm of "fandom" and probably are exactly what oda is alluding to. the post doesn't really smell or hint at fandom either, i think it's an interesting and appropriate anecdote. also it should be obvious these are editorials as they are just his thoughts after the chapter, but i agree some mays or mights could balance the post.
does anyone think now that the bullets doflamingo used on law were actually "amber lead", instead of just lead?

would this mean Law's children will only live a few months…
No, but seriously I don't think it was amber lead.

I'm just really glad it wasn't silver bullets. Last thing we would need is theories about Law being a Werewolf. If it wasn't Amber Lead, then the comment Law made wouldn't really make sense, unless it was to note that it wasn't amber lead.
-
I think it was the amber lead, because he was chained into seastone right after, the plan being he would die helpless of the same disease w/of his df, and oda decided he would just say lead to avoid confusion at the time and not be dramatically anachronistic.

Chopper leaving it to Law- and then both of them leaving it up to Vega and the WG
It was a disease. Diseases aren't only caused by viruses/bacteria.
You guys should just stop making excuses.
-
I was gonna go on a big Law rant, but Ordinary summed up my problem with him pretty well.
! I like to think Oda's editor has straight-up given up on trying to get Oda to make OP more kid-friendly.
! "So Oda, whaddaya have for this week?"
! "Law's a D. Corazon can talk. Doffy's family moved to a place where people hate the WG and want to murder them."
! "Oda-"
! "And they people hate them because the CDs killed their kids, and drove their family members to suicide, and gouged out their eyes for fun."
! "Oda no-"
! "And Doffy's dad tried to get the CDs to at least save his family, but they left them to die."
! "sigh"
! "…"
! "..."
! "Also the DonQuixotes get crucified." -
Chopper should learn to be a surgeon
-
I think the fact that he is also a d, which means literally nothing to the readers at this point, is a death sentence more than anything. He's too hyped, too strong, and is about to finally reveal his mysterious truth bomb trump card on doffy instead of just buying time like in their previous encounters. I think him being a d is not so much plot ass-pull for his character, rather a more interesting plot point for the celestial dragons themselves and the void century, and more for world building instead of convenience/coolness. He's now or momentarily some kind of natural foil to whatever the CDs are.
But I have a feeling the reveal gives him a considerably higher death rate now, considering everything.
-
It was a disease. Diseases aren't only caused by viruses/bacteria.
You guys should just stop making excuses.
I was going to say "if you're talking about the kids, then it wasn't a disease but a toxin"… but I then read the link. To quote your link=
"1. a disordered or incorrectly functioning organ, part, structure, or system of the body resulting from the effect of genetic or developmental errors, infection, poisons, nutritional deficiency or imbalance, toxicity, or unfavorable environmental factors; illness; sickness; ailment. "But here's where it gets the iffy part. The kids were given the drug NHC10 in the candy and had withdrawl symptoms. Some call addiction to drugs a disease, some don't and call it a mental illness instead. (I see mental illness as a disease) However, an overdose has been described as a toxin buildup , therefore falling into that category of disease. ANd Mocha did have a OD after she ate the giant candy to keep it away from the other kids. But the others were shown to be having withdrawls not an overdose.
So on the "is it a disease or not" issue, I'm inclined to go … down the middle
-
I guess I'm being a bit biased, since I see only his older version and compare how he was then and now. He seems just self-obsorbed (older Dellinger), I never got his personality in all truth. So kid version is just the same.
He's bloodthirsty, really. That's the main point of his character. Frankly, having grown up watching his fellow family kill, maim, rob, and plunder, and (presumably) having a Fighting Fish Zoan, a species known for being bloodthirsty, it's no surprise he's aggressive and easily angered. That's why he flipped his shit when he couldn't hurt Bellamy because of Barto.
-
I think the D's are the ones who lost the conflict 800 years ago. The 19 families of Marijoise and the D's might be mortal enemies, which would explain why people with the name D. are considered really dangerous, but it also makes me wonder why the World Govt. would let Monkey D. Garp in their ranks, when he is considered an enemy because of his name.
Also whats interesting is that Law might have aligned with Luffy because he knew Luffy was a fellow D.
-
The more I think about I can't believe i didn't catch onto Law being a D earlier it was hinted.

Well i dont understand why people cant put 2 and 2 together. Why did it take someone to mention MONKEY D Dragon or MONKEY D Garp to know Luffys relative.
I mean, Monkey D dragon is known by everyone in the world (except Luffy at one time lol) but why couldnt they figure out that Monkey D Luffy is related to Dragon.
Also to answer your question. The WG only seems to care about a D doing something once he/she starts getting troublesome. The Gorosei put a 100m on Luffy because they want that D gone. Garp on the otherhand was on their side so they didnt need to worry about it.

I think people couldn't figure out Dragon was Luffy's dad because most people only knew him as "The Revolutionary Dragon" and only very few people knew his full name was Monkey D. Dragon until the War of the Best.

Is Doflamingo based on Napoleon?
-
What makes you think that ? @_@
-
@Monkey:
What makes you think that ? @_@
I think I should have posted in Dumb Predictions lol.
But well, Law having names based on Waterloo, Trafalgar battles which Napoleon got wasted… -
Is Doflamingo based on Napoleon?
it has to lose against russians to be Napoleon, and it has to be on winter or it doesn't count as a real fight.
-
Hmmm… Punk Hazard mmm, I give up.
-
i don't think law will ever go at sh. yet at least i see him more like whitebeard was for roger, but probably he'll become a commander a la marco. i bet my coin on fuji becoming for luffy what garp was for roger.
….....Smoker=Garp
-
Is Doflamingo based on Napoleon?
I think Don Quixote is spanish and his country is based on Spain. So I would no way he is based on Napoleon.
-
I got news, characters can be based on multiple persons.
Dofla isn't a shorty but he also isn't suffering from paranoid delusions and attacking buildings.
I think it's just a play on words by Oda, doubt anything about Dofla was based on Napoleon. Of course, I'm no expert on Napoleon.
-
Gan Fall seems to be completely based on Don Quixote.
-
It's a character from the world known work of literature. Any information regarding him and other characters in the book is really easy to find. That's assuming Oda hasn't read the work himself.
Some do their research and some don't.
Oda does it which I like and respect.
Common knowledge is not so common anymore.–- Update From New Post Merge ---

Law's name and the other things which were pointed out in this thread.

@MJR.:
Some do their research and some don't.
Oda does it which I like and respect.
Common knowledge is not so common anymore.Yeah but naming Dofla's dad after another character from the same book Dofla was named after is not that big of a deal. Compared to his research of other stuff, like Spain architecture, science, biology, life and behavior of real life pirates… Wonder when he had the time for that.

As far as I know, it's only Waterloo and Trafalgar thing. It probably wasn't accidental, in the sense that a major figure was beaten in those battles. I don't see any other similarity with Napoleon. I think it's been confirmed that Oda was inspired by Edward Low when he made Trafalgar. The guy supposedly tortured people before killing them. Trafalgar and Waterloo might just have been put in his name for kicks or something.
But as I said, I'm no expert on Napoleon so if there are any similarities between him and Dofla, I'll change my mind.

Considering Dofla is 305 cm tall I don't think height is a trait of Dofla from Napolean.
Wasnt he based off of that rockstar with the flamingo jacket?

I´m sure he´s a fighting fish that was fed a human DF (smile?)
I am pretty sure that we can completely rule out SMILES.
Dofla is only just beggining his business. Smiles and SAD and ceaser arent Dofla yet.
