Well Smoker and Vergo were marine captains you could say they were strong at the time. Also Hina was or is a marine captain not sure if she still is any more.

Now I can't stop imagining Doffy hiding a basket full of delicious fruits under his coat during the war lol
He's got more than enough coat xD
As for the marines. Yeah… I mean, captains haven't ever exactly been shown to be that capable of taking down Strawhats with the exception of Smoker. I mean, on Enies Lobby, all they did was fight captains at the end, and while the captains got one or two "Surprise this is my awesome power" hits in, the Strawhats still viciously pushed them back. Though I'll have to admit at least the captains were actively doing their job and not getting relegated to background activity.

Is it just me or is Kinemon a terribly boring and unoriginal character? another pervert+swordsman in the series? really? and some people actually want him for next nakama…

Forreal, I could careless about him and kanjuro but I think he will be more important later on I bet they have ties to kaidou. I'd rather Bart as new nakama. The straehsts need a ruthless jester to hype the team up and rep them in the new world

I was doing some rereading of recent chapters and it finally struck me what a stroke of genius Usopp's takedown of Sugar actually was.
At first I thought the joke was good but was underwhelmed by the set up. Like most readers here I was hoping for Usopp to show some competence, and I still think Oda hit some bad notes in how far he regressed him into cowardice, but I get it. It was never about showing how Usopp fights.
This was about getting Usopp to the point he's so terrified he shouts his declaration, against all discretion, as loud as he can. As Cavendish said last chapter 'he saved me, even though I never actually saw it'. Having Usopp cleverly win isn't the point, this is about Legend building.
All those toyified by Sugar heard was that declaration and then… Sugar is beaten! They're saved!
It happened in the stupidest, luckiest, most bumbing manner possible and that doesn't matter in the slightest. Whenever people talk of how how the Great Captain Usopp saved them the details are going to be straight from whatever they want to believe happen. The facts and the details don't matter. In fact having Usopp mean to do it takes away from his achievement, nobody saw how clever he might have been. It's all about intent.Oda's saying a lot about how blind hero worship is in this arc" and a running theme throughout the book has been how gossip and reputation seldom line up with the true facts. This is another look at the process how Buggy forged his fame at Marineford.
It also makes a contrast at how Luffy is building his.
And because it's not really earned it gives Usopp the motivation to catch up to his own legend for the day we see Captain Usopp, leader of 8,000 men and brave warrior of Elbaf.Plus those epic face-faults were pretty funny.

Good analysis! I didn't really think that far ahead but you're right. The legend of God Usopp is going to be absolutely epic when told from the mouth of one of the captive toys. I can't wait to see how far it goes into the story.
Of course the angry and pissed will just say he could have had an epic battle and won without anyone noticing. Usopp just wasn't ready for some like Trebol and Sugar. He'll get a full fight before Dressrosa is over with.

It's not just about getting ready, with Trebol he was definitely outclassed. With Sugar the problem is she's a non combatant, she can't really be taken down with sniping. She really only has that E Honda Black Bears style attack, and it can only be used at close range which is fairly useless against Usopp. Perona at least had a few different ways she could be offensive, and his fight with her was more about mind games than anything. I see why people would want Usopp to have a similar mind games style match with Sugar, but it doesn't help him grow as a sniper at all.
At the end of the day a fight like that with mind games, story wise, would have pretty much the exact same effect as the way he took her out now. I do expect Usopp to get a full fight before this arc is over, though.

@Romancedawn Thanks!

The fight with Sugar really had nothing to do with Usopp, it was all about the audience. His fights with Perona was pretty private, only his crewmates really noticed so showing him grow was fine.
But if he had somehow won against Trebol & taken out Sugar what would have been the point? It works against him as if he was proud of it he might even try to correct people on the details. It's something that could turn you bitter that, not to mention one of the rescued saying 'Oh, well that sounds kind of stupid'.
This way Usopp just has to shut up and accept whatever praise is thrown his way. Which will really only grow his legend more. And, yes I do expect Oda will throw us a bone and have Usopp win one more on his own merits later on in the arc.

No no I agree with everything you're saying. A couple pages back (or it may have been in another thread) I basically said a similar thing, myself. I just wanted to point out that he couldn't really use his sniping skills even if he wanted to, so he took her out the same way he's always done it. And Cavendish did note he didn't know how Usopp saved them, only that he did, so what you're saying makes a lot of sense. It may have not been the primary intention of Oda, but it is one of the outcomes.

That's cool, and what I'm saying whether he could or couldn't have done anything differently isn't the point of this.
I really would like to see a focus on Usopp's pure sniping skill rather than his plant-gimmics but maybe that'll count at a later time. And Oda really is loading this arc up with hero worship themes; the Tontatta and now the rescued gladiators for Usoland, The Dressrosans (before Sugar was taken out) and the Doflamingo Family for Dofla, Bellamy for Dofla, Kyros by his daughter and his arena rep, Bellamy for Dofla, Law for his lost Cora-san, maybe Kinemon for Kanjuuro, Barto for Luffy and even Cavendish's hate of him.
I think this story is all about when heroes do and don't live up to it, when it's misplaced and even if the hero should have to take the burden of itas well.
I think when it's finally over and we can reread it in one sitting it's going to be a bit deeper than just the already great story Oda puts up. -
I dunno, I love Usopp to bits but I think he's going to sit this one out for the rest of the arc. He isn't like Franky who can just refuel on cola and regain all of his strength; Trebol beat him up pretty badly to the point where he's basically paralysed and the Tontatta have to carry him everywhere. Granted, people in One Piece heal very quickly (and in the most recent chapter he seems to have recovered a bit) so maybe he'll be able to get back up again, but I feel like he has already done his job.
I'm still holding out hope that Burgess will try to attack Usopp due to his high Star Bounty though. Burgess can't just be sitting around doing nothing right now and going after easy money seems perfect for him.

Burgess doesn't like easy though.
The exact opposite, in fact.

True, I also am not expecting to get in another fight. Maybe taunt someone, proving to his delighted followers how cool he is who will then protect him from the challenge, or perform a pretty cool act of sniping such as at Eines Lobby. Whatever he does now will improve his legend despite himself.
As for Burgess, again he may go after the stars so he can leave. He may go after Dofla for trapping him with everyone else. There's a chance he may want to screw with Luffy directly, or test himself agains an admiral or even decided to hunt down Sabo to see if he can beat the mera mera out of him.
There's also the chance he might just sit in a bar until al the main events are over and just walk away. We'll see. -
Would love some Jesus action, can't lie. I want to see what he is capable off.

The thing is, if Burgess isn't able to call Blackbeard, that means he's making his own rules now. So he could very well just be on top of a building challenging people like the good ol' days. We definitely need to see him coming in and destroying somebody. Even if I'd love it if he just runs into Franky and Senor Pink, and he accidentally overhears how theres all these awesome SMILE being produced in the factory, and he decides to go try one out while destroying the factory in the process. Leaving some antagonism between him and Franky (Because I'm still riding the whole Burgess vs Franky train, choo choo champion perverts.)
-
Am I the only one who doesn't really get any real tension from this arc?
Luffy's side has so many strong characters now that even with 2 admiral level people on their side Doffy seems vastly underpowered. -

Come on, man. Be a little bit realistic. Burgess is getting about as much done this arc as Fujitora.

I'm genuinely curious about Doffy's clone ability. I think it'd be a super waste if he didn't use it again. The way he double-teamed Luffy was very fun to watch. If he doesn't do that again, It'd be a real, real shame.
And no, I don't mean, everytime Dofla appears we're all "wait, is that Doffy? or a clone?". Not that. I mean Doffy AND his string clone sandwiching Luffy from both sides.
Oda, don't drop that concept.
Am I the only one who doesn't really get any real tension from this arc?
Luffy's side has so many strong characters now that even with 2 admiral level people on their side Doffy seems vastly underpowered.Who's the second "admiral level" person? Fuji and Sabo are cancelling each other out. . .are you counting Burgess? Doffy himself?
And, yeah, I've been thinking Dofla's side is screwed for a long time, yet I feel Oda has the chance to make the officers look good by dealing with the Colosseum fighters. I honestly don't think Gladius is any weaker than Ideo or Sai. That'd be a great showing of their actual threat level and would up the stakes of the arc, knowing these guys are no pushover.
Then, the elite execs. take out Caven and Chinjao. Profit.
Except Buffalo. Every crew needs a Yamcha, and it was up to him to fill that role.
Who needs tension, we need to see more Sabo curbstomping dudes with ease!
Come on, man. Be a little bit realistic. Burgess is getting about as much done this arc as Fujitora.
Your Sabo comment makes no sense. Sabo has just been officialy pushed aside this very chapter, and his contribution towards lessening the number of enemy characters is. . .one man down, Bastille. That's it. Being canceled by Fuji afterwards means he cannot help Luffy curbstomp Dofla in any way, so Luffy's on his own, as are the rest of the guys.
The lack of tension has nothing to do with Sabo being strong.
And your Fuji comment is just one of the many bitter comments you leave every day regarding what you feel is an unfair treatment Oda's giving to an Admiral. Fair enough, but I think you should honestly tone them down a bit. It's like, everything in this arc can be reduced to "just like Fujitora".
I'm not saying to get over it cause it obviously is pissing you off a lot, just try and not bring it up at every conceivable instance. It'll make you feel even more bitter towards One Piece every time. Unless that's what you want, of course. . .

burgess doesnt have a change againts sabo thats the reality

Would love some Jesus action, can't lie. I want to see what he is capable off.
That brings back memories from the start of the final colloseum round and how everyone was excited to see Diamante, Burgess, Sabo (and to some extent Barto) go all out against each other.
Am I the only one who doesn't really get any real tension from this arc?
Luffy's side has so many strong characters now that even with 2 admiral level people on their side Doffy seems vastly underpowered.I have a feeling that many are underestimating the Dofla family a lot. That begins with them being disappointed that Franky could not defeat three of them at the same time and has a rematch against just one of them, to pairing them even against some of the lesser gladiators or complaining about zoro "just" having to fight Pica instead of a more awesome opponent during the initial palast invasion.
-

I know this haha. I just wanted to express my hopes and dreams for what could ideally be the coolest thing Burgess could do this arc. I honestly don't want him to fight anyone, I want him to destroy the factory that Senor Pink just said even Franky's beam couldn't.
Thus hyping Burgess and putting a little rivalry between him and Franky.

If we're doing straight matchups I always thought Franky would fight Abalo Pizarro cause he's got some sort of weird drill…things...or maybe they're guns..for hands. But this would be pretty sweet, too.

I would like to see a three way fight of Sabo vs Fuji vs Burgess. That would be fun.

Nah, I was just pointing out what Jesus would have become in that sort of fight.
A burger that got eaten by two fat Americans (Stereotyping -_-)

Fun? Agreed… but it wouldn't add anything else to the plot, at least not that I can rationalize. Burgess has served his role this arc in that he's reminding us BB is agressively seeking strong fruits and the hint about Kuzan. The only further purpose he could serve is to further establish the enmity between the BB pirates and the SH pirates.

Also Blackbeard's expanded his crew into a fleet, just like Whitebeard used to have. And Burgess is basically Marco. Granted, we didn't have to see that here, but it was a great way to learn that information.

Do you mean he's like Marco as in he's the strongest commander?
We don't really have any confirmation for that.
For all we know, Burgess is the first fleet commander because he loves being "number 1" and Teach didn't really care who got what number.

No no I was just talking about how they're both 1st division captains. I always got the vibe that Burgess was the first crewmate Blackbeard recruited, which is why he's the captain of the 1st ship, but that's complete and total speculation on my part.

Cool, I've seen the old "Burgess is the first commander therefore he's the strongest" thing getting thrown about before.
I didn't think that's what you'd meant but just wanted to make sure lol

Well he is Jesus "Champion" Burgess. Wiiiiiiiiiiihahahahahahaha!
I'm telling you man, Stronger's the 10th division captain. Hito Hito no Mi: Model…something.

@Monkey:
Definitely this arc. He loses to Luffy or Law, and then Kaido get's him.
Beautiful signature. And Kidd is Shiki.
-
This is almost definitely false hope, but with the mention of Robin going to the Flower Field(?) this chapter, I'm really feeling like she might actually fight Trebol.
Probably not, but I can dream.

She will most likely fight Trebol, all the previous cameos got paired up again. Franky vs. Pink, Zoro vs. Pica. The SHs on Dressrosa right now will get a major fight. Yes, Ussop will still fight.

I hope so. I want to see her go all out and reveal some new techniques learned during her time with the Revolutionaries… and perhaps tap into some of that Miss All Sunday spark.
-
I think it all depends on whether or not Trebol is a Logia-type. Nothing has been explicitly stated yet, and due to the vagueness of what his "sticky stuff" really is it's not as easy to just consider him a Logia like you would with someone like Smoker or the former three Admirals whom were all made up of very clearly defined elements. But if he is, then unless Robin knows a tactic that can counteract him, I don't see her alone being enough to take Trebol down.
Honestly, I have no idea how Trebol will be dealt with at this point. I originally just assumed Sabo would defeat him since he was off on his own, but now that Sabo is holding Fujitora back I don't see that happening. We already know that Zoro is going to handle Pica, and I'm still betting that Kyros will take out Diamante because too much about that battle would be fitting for it to not happen. But with Trebol, who knows. Maybe he's down in the scrap heap where Kin'emon currently is, and if Kanjuro turns out to be an insanely strong samurai, he could take Trebol out in a really cool introduction chapter. I could also see a tag-team combo of Robin, Bartolomeo and Rebecca being enough to defeat him. I can't say for sure at this point, but Oda can honestly do whatever he wants with Trebol now. All I need is that bittersweet Kyros vs Diamante fight to be confirmed and I'll be satisfied match-up wise.

Usopp's Pop Green Shuriken cut Trebol in half, but he was fine afterward, so he's probably Logia.
I wouldn't like Kanjuro to take out Trebol since…I wouldn't like a character that was just introduced to take out a main donquixote family executive.
-
I would want to see Robin vs Trebol it is quite a possibility due to the stuff that is happening in the story right now.

Isn't Doflamingo already a pirate King?

Franky taking out Fukurou.
-
He's currently a pirate who is also a king
-
Franky taking out Fukurou.
Not even remotely similar. We had seen Franky for…lots of Chapters by that point, even his backstory had already been seen. Also Fukurou was a low tier member of CP9, compared to the others. Trebol is one of the 3 main executives aside from Diamante and Pica, so I do not want to see him taken out by a character who would have been literally introduced 5 or so chapters before he'd take out Trebol.

Franky wasn't even introduced in the same arc….franky already had the potential to become a crew mate before the arc started AND Franky had close ties to Cipher Pol anyway.

Now that Bastille is out of the picture are the only wild cards let on this arc Manshelly, Burgess, Kanjuro, CP0, Meadows, and Bellamy right?
I'm not missing anyone am I? -

Depends, Koala wasn't mentioned at all this chapter so where she pops up could be interesting. Djola seems to be somewhere on Dressrosa proper so within Birdcage.
And not all of the gladiators are accounted for so someone like Shaman Mummy, Damask or Meadows could pull off an upset somewhere. This arc needs a huge scorecard.
-
If you really think about it, Oda is portraying Doflamingo and Fujitora as Stalin and Hitler.
They're both a bit scared one might turn on each other, but they're sure each won't because of their circumstances.
Doflamingo being the Hitler is going to be crushed by turning on Fujitora, failing to defeat him and result in Doffys defeat.
Genius.

Still saying Meadows is Kaidou, keeping an eye on things in Dressrosa. (Don't really think it's true but that would be amazing. Part of the SH's vs Big Mom, other part & revo's vs Doffy and Fuji and then Kaidou into the fray)

'The Shame Of Arlong Park' makes me laugh.
Though when you think about it Block A had Burgess masquerading as "Mr. Store", Block B King Riku as "Ricky" and C had both Luffy & Sabo as "Lucy". That leaves D Block as the only one with no VIPs in disguise but with 3 masked/ obscured characters.
Unless you want to count Hekuba.
