I became OP fan in the beginning of 2006. I spent 2 straight days (only stopped for food and 4 hours of sleep) reading OP from the beginning to the current chapter of that time (Water 7 arc). I got tired during the process but keep going because I was hook with the story line and cliff hanger.
Your duration as a One Piece fan

Bought an American Shonen Jump at a book fair forever ago. Don't remember the exact year but the OP chapter in it was the one where Zoro is fighting the acrobat guy and cuts his side open. Been reading the manga since then, originally just the Viz releases and then the scanlations. Also watched the anime along with K-F subs until they were about in the middle of the Foxy arc, which is when I initially dropped the anime. Watched it seldomly from then on but just recently started really watching it again on Toonami.
-
I have been reading One Piece since August 2003.
The new chapter at that time (in my local manga magazine, which is few chapters behind Jump's) is when the Straw Hats started going to Sky Island.
-
I haven't been reading One Piece (or manga, for that matter) for nearly as long as most people here. Started around this time in 2011, maybe a little earlier.
Let's see… looking back, I'd say the first chapter I read new was 623.
-
I was on and off with the manga, I was more of an anime-viewer then.
Chapter 359: Bingo
When Merry "died", Robin declared her wish and Sanji being all cool at the end, I remember wanting to read more.
-
about 395
I remember hopping on board with the manga during Robin's flashback
-
Only started with anime recently (after joining this forum lol).
I started One Piece with Volume 54, Impel Down. It was just sitting there in my local library and I ended up reading the whole series from 1-54 the next day. -
I don't do much posting here, but i started reading at chapter 396!
-
I started reading mangas with the German Jump equivalent called "Banzai!" which had some weird novellized version of One Piece, that didn't really last long, only up to Reverse Mountain, I believe. It didn't really interest me in that form but when the anime started, I read all the volumes in a bookstore (without buying it :ninja:). I caught up but at first, we had no internet at home, so reading spoilers in a bi-weekly anime magazine ("I heard Usopp is quitting, omgz, iz that true?!?!?!?" "Yes, you're right!!1") was all I could do. Then I found some sites that only covered new information like the revealed Monkey D. family, which also was very poorly translated (I first believed, their new ship was called King of the Sea…), until I found a forum that was actually up-to-date and also had the complete chapter to read. That's also how I ended up here, since Arlong Park was their source.
If I remember correctly, the chapter with the "conclusion" of Ace vs Blackbeard just came out, so the first spoilers I saw were the introduction of Brook which was officially released on 1/29/2007, I think. -
My first new chapter was chapter 591 released in late June or early July 2011.
-
I believe the very first chapter I've read on a weekly basis was chapter 319. Somewhere around April-May 2004. Joined AP around that time.
I became a fan of OP earlier that same year by watching Kaizoku Fansubs' release of episode 86. First OP episode I've ever watched (I seldom start a series with episode 1), instant love.
-
I remember I first started following it on a weekly basis at chapter 385 "There's a way". I found out about One Piece through some Russian fan group which scanlated Naruto at that time (it was still a good manga at that time). It was a pretty good chapter I have to say.
-
Ouaaa, I'm amazed people here actually remember what chapter they jumped in on after so many years! Especially since I've reread the series so many times it's impossible not to get it all jumbled together. I had no clue, I had to go back and try to remember when I picked it up to figure out where I was.
So, lets see…
If we take it from the start I think I bought the first One Piece volumes in 2003 (it says so on the inside of the volume and I bought it within days of it's release). As background info I was a huge fan of Dragonball and had bought every book every month (a new volume was released once a year starting from year 2000) for years until the series was finished. Afterwards the publishing company decided to give out One Piece and since I was starved for more comics I bought OP as well... only I didn't like it as much. It was too wierd, I didn't like the artstyle etc because I kept comparing it to (and wanted it to be) Dragonball. So after 7 volumes I stopped buying it and started to read other comics instead. And that was the case... until a few years later when I hit uni around autumn 2006- spring 2007ish and a friend of mine insisted I should at least read the 10-15 first volumes because it really is a great series on its own and if I read that far I'd be hooked.
... yea...
And the rest is history, I guess.
Thinking back I'm quite certain I came in around the end of the Water 7 arc, I remember waiting on Thriller Bark chapters scanned with bad quality so... Volume 44-45? Somewhere around there.
-
Man, I should have gotten this thread moved a while ago.
Business is booming here in the manga section.
I'm not on that list Mr Rob.
Sorry about that buddy, honest mistake.
-
Well, I really wasn't a manga fan to begin with. In fact, I never knew something like manga existed. I was checking out some youtube videos when I encountered a fan made music video of OP and started watching. Looked interesting and so started watching the anime from episode 1. Till that time, I never knew something called the Manga existed! I saw some comments from the video site wherever I watched which referred to the Manga being superior. By that time I had finished all the current anime and then realized that the anime was based out of the Manga. First chapter I read was I believe somewhere around the Water 7 Arc then started rereading from the first one. I believe I started off in 2004/05 perhaps.
-
I don't quite remember when i started watching the anime, but the last chapter that was out when i jumped to reading the manga was this chapter that
Garp was revealed to be Luffy's grandpa, so, chapter 431. And on the next one we learn about Monkey D. Dragon. Glorious times. -

I started watching the anime in August 2008. Catched up with the anime around December that year. (The most recent episode was that Spa filler with a Brook filler just the week after that). I didn't read the manga until at least a few months after that, but I catched up with the manga when the Whitebeard War started (with the reveal of Ace's father)
-
Lets see, I joined here in 2007, but i was caught up for about a year already. I remember uncontrollably laughing at chopper storing kumadori in the fridge. So ch 405 for me…9 years ago crap
-
Was a fan from 2005 to about 2011 from that time period I found One Piece to be utterly flawless. Have to admit the last 2 arcs have been a bit meh for me, am finding this arc a bit hit and miss. But I've followed it this far so I guess I'll see through to the end.

The reveal of Roger as Ace's father took place in Chapter 550, "Marine Headquarters", released on the 18th of July, 2009.

Lol I love the scene around then when Franky tries the different types of fuel by accident.
Anyway, that's chapter 405, "Power", released on the 27th of March, 2006.
-
I was caught up with the Swedish publication in time for volume 26 and realized the series was available online in time for Chapter 440, released January 7, 2007. Really great place to be introduced to the weekly format, although I had no better place to read it at the time than in some obscure MSN Group.
-
I don't remember 100% which was my first new chapter, but I know I catched up when Luffy got to Amazon Lily Island. So I think my first new chapter was right after Luffy got there, so it's same as yours Rob - 515.
-
I used to read volumes only in my own language, and I caught up to the point where it was at around chapter 328 (Probably a year after the chapter got released online)
First chapter I read online was 553

Cool, that's Chapter 553, "Conflict at the Summit", released on the 10th of August, 2009.
Also, looks like you're rather new, so welcome to AP, buddy.
You get to join our extensive Scandinavian contingent.

Chapter 606 was my first totally up-to-date chapter. The one where they were underwater looking for Luffy, Zoro and Sanji. I had watched the anime up to a certain point (Thriller Bark?) but my internet became really terrible for a few weeks so I couldn't watch any more without it taking about two hours to load - so I read the manga from there and caught up then bought all the english volumes, read through again and have collected and remained up to date ever since. Good times.
-
I'll never forget the day I catched up with the anime. It was around the moment when Luffy got stomped by Magellan. After watching the last episode available, I got SERIOUSLY depressed. It was like someone close to me died, I am not shitting you. And no, it wasn't your typical post-show sadness, it was REALLY serious (I was 16 or 17 then, so that might be the reason) It lasted for four days and stopped the moment I watched new episode on Sunday. It's like my brain realized that it isn't over and One Piece is still on, and decided to stop being fucked up lol. That shit was bizzare I tell you. I had a smiliar moment when Luffy punched tenryubito. I was so overwhelmed by epicness of that scene, I literally started shaking and slipped off my chair. I've never had that kind of reaction to a show of any kind. Guess that is why I love OP so much. That tenryyubito moment was one of the best emotional moments in my life. Only love and orgasm are better, lol.
Anyway, after catching up I decided to check how far ahead the manga is so I went to onemanga, clicked on One Piece and… with big, fat letters, the title of the newest chapter hit me right in the middle of my fucking face. Yeah, you know what it was. "The death of Portgas D. Ace".
-
I can't remember the specific date, but it was definitely the chapter where Luffy (not understanding the plan) leaps over the gate of Eneis lobby ahead of the Water 7 crew. And fights his way thru the guards. I remember that following chapter ended with the Franky Family waking up Oimo and Kashi, and then Luffy being surrounded by the almost 10,000 guards of Eneis Lobby. So I'm pretty sure it was Chapter 377 - Great Battle on the Judiciary Island, which my guess would have been August or September of 2005. My old person memory is fading.
-
Franky doing his pose naked and Robin grabbing his balls when he was about to join the crew, those were my first pages I saw from OP, so .. chapter 437. Also, the first chapter after I catched up was 447 when that zombie tree and unicorn were having a drink in Thriller Bark.
-
The first chapter I read that was up to date was around water 7 ~ Enies.
I started reading the series when it was released in my country (at that time I know 21 books had been released in Japan).Specifically, I think it was around the time before the wave hit the town (was it called aqua laguna?). Hard to say! I think the local books were somewhere during the Skypiea arc and I figured out I could read it online -now- instead of waiting like two months for a new book. As I was catching up and reading it online I do recall spoiling myself with things such as cp9 and other things which didn't make sense to me at that point until I caught up.
-
that's a loooong time ago but I know it was right at the end of the Arlong Park arc somewhere around chapter 90, which was released May 31st 1999.
-
Chapter 298 - the song of the island.
-
Really great idea for a thread. And now I'm feeling old haha. Can't remember the exact chapter, but my switch from anime to manga was way back in Alabasta. I think it was in 2002 or 2001 wow. The new one for me at the time I think was Luffy and Croc's 2nd fight. Read that chapter, then read from beginning of series and never looked back at the anime (episodes at least).
-
I remember mine chapter was the one where the prisoners of Impel Down learn that Buggy was from Gold Roger's crew (after they escape), which is chapter 549. I have no idea when I read it, but I'm certain it was close to the chapter release, which must be 2009.
-
I caught up somewhere in punk hazard
-
It was when Davy Back Fight was broadcasted in Germany iirc. I did not like it that much and wanted to see how the story continues after it. Looked it up, should be from 14th November 2006 to 30th November 2006.
-
I want to say right before they started the grand line, I remember arlong park…..or something?
-
Well I was big into the anime starting around 2008. I remember binging the episodes and not wanting to read the manga to "spoil" what was to come. I caught up to the anime right around when the Whitebeard War started and kept watching weekly until FI came to be. At this point I was fed up with waiting weekly and started to read the manga (648 I believe was the first new chapter I started reading after catching up from the beginning of FI, 12/4/11) and I discovered how amazing it was to read the manga. I have been dedicated to the manga since then and it is leagues above the anime in terms of quality. I have been debating going back and reading from chapter 1 to experience what I missed.
But yeah.. converted to manga 12/4/11 chapter 648 from having watched the anime since 2008
-
Easy for me to remember. I Caught up to the anime, and immediately wanted to see where the manga was at. Went to the most recent chapter's "last" page and saw a chibi Luffy and all I could think to myself was "wtf, does the author really draw the manga like this? The anime version is tons better".
Only later did I find out that this was the after affect of Luffy going Gear 3 for the first time. If I had looked at any other pages, I would've discovered how idiotic I was. This was Chapter 403.

Haha I can't say I've ever heard that one before, the chibi Luffy thing I mean.
That's excellent lol
-
Looked up the date that correlates with the date i gave above, should be chapter 435

Yeah I am pretty new here. I joined during summer because I saw the tournament.
And that sounds right, before that chapter I didn't even know you could read online.

Let's see, I think I've told this story before, but we very briefly lived in Japan when I was a kid, and my bought the first four volumes, which were all that was out at the time, one day and he read them to me since I could not speak Japanese. (For real, his on the fly translations were 10 10 times betetr than the crap mangapanda puts out.) We then read weekly after that. When we left Japan, I think it was during the Loguetown arc. After that we imported the volumes, and I kept up that way. Learned what scanlations were and started reading weekly at "Water Luffy" in Alabasta. Been on this boat ever since.

That's a pretty cool origin story.
God, I really want to go to Japan.
Anyway, that's Chapter 200, "Water Luffy", released on September the 22nd, 2001.
