I'd say that aside from the food item Gyro (which half of the people pronounce incorrectly), the average american is most likely to encounter words like gyro(scope), hyrule, myna-bird, cyrus, gynecologist, all of which take that "consonant-Y" form and pronounce the Y as "ai", instead of "ee". So seeing "kyros" and thinking "kairos" is really pretty understandable.
and in the end, Oda writes it キョロス, "kyuros". but he also writes "sabaody" but wants it pronounced "shabondy", and wrote Shiryuu when he meant Shilliew, so fuck him.
We need someone to post some Geoffrey Chaucer up in here.
I'm talkin we need some real English, folks. Like forreals.

R and L are almost the same in Japanese (as everyone knows), so Shiryuu becomes Shirlyu, which is practically Shilliew, so it's not that big of a problem. Everything else though, is.

oh, I know. it's just one of those times where everyone agreed that Shiryuu was the more badass name, but Oda was thinking completely outside that box. or somehow screwed up and made a bad call, whatever.
so if he writes kyuros and wants it read kyros, I'm almost more inclined to believe he left out a "u" by mistake. it's entirely possible that he never considered how greek would be written in english or pronounced.

Japanese often confuses the Greek υ
Like the κυ in Κωκυτός is pronounced like "key" but it might be written in Japanese as "kyu"
So if I had to guess I would say he intended Κυρος and converted it incorrectly
@Monkey:
If Oda's deliberately going for a foreign sounding name I wouldn't go with a Japanese actor/actress's pronunciation.
I mean she says her own name kind of like "Rei-becca" and that darn well ain't right.
I know , but listening the anime will certainly give me the habit to say Curos. For exemple my friend who are only manga reader pronounce Ceasar Clown : "César Cloon".
I have rewatch the scene one more time, she does not insist that much on the "U", I will need to hear other character saying Kyros's name to be sure.

It reminds me how many (me included) liked the name Chu better than Chew. Yeah, Chew looks odd and funny so fits the character, but still Chu looks better

I may have missed something obvious here, but can someone clarify about Violet/Viola:
When she meets Sanji, she is on run from the police. What did she do? I always took it as she didn't actually stab a man, but had to think up a lie in order to explain her sad face to Sanji, and the "I want you to kill a man" line was also a ruse, even if she was subconsciously referring to Doflamingo. Because her crime was never elaborated since then. But if she didn't, what would make the police go after her? One would think Violet has a certain degree of impunity, being member of the crew of a Shichibukai and World Government-authorized king. Or was it all an intricate scheme where she made the police pretend they chased her so that she easily could fall into Sanji's arms?
Again, I have a feeling I've not managed to connect some really obvious dots, but clarification would be nice.

I think it was just part of the trap to get Sanji. That is what I understood at least.
EDIT: I was looking back and actually, she does mention her pursuers again after revealing herself as a Doffy's Family member to Sanji so I really don't know.
I agree In thinking it was a trap. Viola has the local police chase her so she appeared as the "damsel in distress" and get Sanji to drop his guard when she first met him. Remember that Sanji was first with Zoro & co when he saw Viola as she danced, when she saw Sanji and winked. I believe she knew who he was (a Strawhat) then. After all… didn't one of the family say they knew the SHs were coming and had Viola watching??
Viola played the damsel in distress to separate the SHs (Sanji & Zoro) that had crossed her path, the old 'divide and conquer' tactic.
Do think we ever see chinjo son in one piece, seems odd he never took from his dad. On second thought maybe he had a daughter instead of a son
Or he is dead, a fate pirates in the New World might suffer.
Does anyone know the name of the shonen app? Where you scan last page and get first page next chapter?
Was armament hardening used pre timeskip or even mentioned? I'm not talking about CoA just the black hardening thing.
Everyone knows that Pell survived after awakening COA at the last second. He isn't the strongest warrior of Alabasta for nothing.

It's on here, but I'm pretty sure the one where you scan the last page is only available in Japan.

Nah, black hardening was never shown pre-timeskip.

So If I've got this right these little dudes on green bit are not actually dwarves, so they are new race or what.
I was watching an add for a waterbike when I realized that Aokiji does not use his bike anymore. I thought it might be because of his severed leg designed by Oda himself for the film Z. But he is riding his bike several times in the same movie.:getlost: So here is my question:
What's the deal with Camel ?

When was his name revealed? The bike has to be in the backpack, pokemon style!

D: Tell me the name of the penguin Mr. Kuzan was riding! Is he related to the Galapagos penguin?! Was he treading water under the surface the entire time he was waiting for Mr. Kuzan?! He's so cute, I can't help but want to know more! Tell me!! –Kunugi
O: Yep, that's a big penguin. He's a member of the "super penguin" species, which is very adept at treading water. He fits well with Kuzan's Chilly-Chilly Style, and has been accompanying him since he left the Navy. His name is Camel. Also, he's a hardboiled dude, so don't call him cute or you'll get burned.

How you all make anything from this pic is beyond me.
I see nothing…
But I agree that Hogback, Absalom, and Moria are probably on a team together somewhere in the NW.

If you look at that bat figure on the bow of the ship, then look right, you'll first see something that looks like Absalom's tall hat and next to him, something that looks like a fat ass with two hands in the air. Two dark figures on the relatively light ship background.
Wow, I see it now. But I still think it could just be nothing.
Crazy, Oda.
How many weeks we should wait till the next chapter? 2 or 3?
@Esu:

2. It's just one week break. So we wait 2 weeks to get a new chapter.
Guys I have a quick question, I remember back in the alabasta arc, Mr.8 was supposedly killed by robin. But how did he manage to survive? I don't think they showed how or why. I just recalled this now lol

Its never been revealed how Igaram/Mr. 8 survived.
But later on it was revealed that Robin had allowed Vivi to follow her, which lead Vivi to find out Mr.0's identity as Sir Crocodile. Add that to how she tried to give Luffy an eternal pose to take them near Arabastra, many fans think that Robin really didn't care about killing Mr. 8.
Is it ever explained why Hody doesn't just die from the after-effects of the drug?
Compared to the others, he consumed MUCH more, yet he was in the exact state as the rest of them.

I don't think so. Though to be honest I sorta figured he had hit his saturation point early on and all the drugs he was taking after his "transformation" did jack simply because his body couldn't process them anymore. If each pill really did double your strength he should have been able to juggle planets by the end of that fight.

I have to agree with this. It was already discussed that the pills sped up aging and seem to come into effect sooner the more one took them but after the stage where their hair turned white… they didn't do anything more until they hit the advanced age stage....which they seem to have done at the same time.
I've imagined that the pills worked something like this=
They expanded the strength of the person, bringing out the maximum potential of the person similar to how the Super Solider Serum changed frail Steve Rogers into Captain America. Its the potential that most can not achieve due to all the various factors.
And since this is OP-verse ... people of the same race and same build can have a vast difference of strength.
Take Usopp and Luffy, they have same body build, only 1 to 3 inches of height difference (in Usopp's favor) but while Usopp is "normal strength", Luffy is a monster there.
So the pills can affect the fishmen to bring out their max strength ... but there is a limit, they can't go beyond their max, so they can't do the impossible feats. Once they hit the max strength is when their hair first turns white and signals a max saturation of the pills in the system...though its possible a larger body may take more to reach the max... then again this is OP so maybe not
Once they reach the max saturation, it doesn't matter how much more pills they take, it won't change anything, the max is met.
So now why did they age at same rate? "Hodi ate more of them." "Didn't he change sooner?" Sure he took more of them but as said, I believe it doesn't change the saturation level is met. And he changed on same day as the others, it was maybe just hours before but it was same day.
Its possible that once the max saturation is met, then its a matter of time (something like 1-2 days) that the body cycles the drugs out of the system which then crashes, leading to the advanced aging
Even after his hair turns white the pills still had an effect on his body by ignoring pain and fatigue. As for the double-strength, I never bought into that.
Maybe there's just something about Hody's body that increased an immunity to the pills. Compared to Hyouzou, it took him many more pills just for Hody's hair to change color and reach "max saturation." That whole concept is just confusing/wasn't explained well. The rest of his group(Zeo, Dosun, etc) were shown to eat a few and aged at practically the same rate as Hody/Hyouzou without overdosing.
And in the chapter introducing the new fishmen, Daruma says that Hody has taken a lot of pills at once at least once before. Yet his age never matured before the day the SHs came to town…his minions on the other hand were screwed after taking barely any.

A good note on that ignoring pain and fatigue. Not sure of the double strength too. That's one reason I think its the pills pulling out the maximum ability of the person.
In the real world, we get these rare cases of a mother lifting up a car to save her child from being crushed but in a normal setting that selfsame mother is an average lady with average strength. Its usually described along lines of 'adrenaline rush' or something similar. A case wehre the body does amazing things but isn't normally able to reach its full potential.
I think the pills act similar where it pulls out the full potential of the physical form.

About Hodi eating the pills for some time even before SHs arrive and not yet changed- a "max saturation" can still be in affect. Didn't they say that this (when SHs was there) was the most pills he ever took? IF so then he never hit max saturation before. It was a matter of him taking 1 or 2 pills, then they run their course without him taking another one while on them. That would mean his saturation (if it exists) went to zero until next time he took the pills.
But that scan you provide… Daruma is saying he took 'a lot at once' again. Meaning he's done it before... but he didn't change right then. Didn't he take some more before the hair turned white?
If not, then maybe its a case of adrenal rush was kept going past the level of the past.
Whatever the case, I think its time to change a bit of this theory of mine….
By that I mean, maybe its a case of "max saturation" (which depends of individual) + adrenal rush + no recovery period = the 1st change with white hair. then its a matter of time
Maybe in the past he took the lot of drugs, then after a time calmed down and wasn't quite as active, giving his body a chance to recover. In his coup against King Neptune and fighting SHs, he didn't get a chance of recovery after hitting "max saturation". He went to attacking the palace to the fight in the plaza then to fighting Luffy. Add to the physical activity he took more pills, maintaining the saturation level.
But this is just a working theory that I really didn't think much on this until today so discussing this really helps fleshing it out. Counter arguments (that are well thought out so they can get the brains working on ironing out wrinkles) are welcome
Maybe physical activity over a certain period increases the potential to change.
i asked this in another thread but here seems like a better place, really..
does anyone know which new group scanned pretty much all of skypiea, or at least the last few volumes?
i can't seem to figure out where they come from..

I'm really curious why people think Blackbeard is the strongest living character in OP when he gets beat up quite a few times. Strongest abilities? Yes. Strongest character? Not sure about that.

Well, according to BB himself, his fruit makes him feel even more pain from each hit that he takes than a normal person would feel.
So, him reeling from an attack isn't what people are using to gauge his strength. It's that he stands back up to keep fighting just a moment later. (Exception: Magellan)
edit: The way I see it, since BB has a gravity fruit, he's almost impossible to miss. A standard hit turns into a direct, critical hit. That kind of thing.
I'm really curious why people think Blackbeard is the strongest living character in OP when he gets beat up quite a few times. Strongest abilities? Yes. Strongest character? Not sure about that.
He generally loses because of his overconfidence.
Having risen to the status of yonko within 2 years suggests that he's getting better at managing said idiocy.
After that, you've got the guy with the 2 strongest DF's and absolutely unbelievable endurance.
I can see why he's regarded by some as the strongest character in OP.

I think Rob's reply a pretty good explanation on why Blackbeard is considered a great candidate for the title of strongest character in the series.
Although out of curiosity, who do you have in mind as the strongest then?
@Gol:

Don't get me wrong, I think he's really powerful just not the strongest character in One Piece. I think he might even be the weakest Yonko and the reason being is that he's just the newest on the block. I think right now the strongest character would be Shanks although I think Dragon would probably a very strong character as well but we don't know his role as of yet.
There's something about BB that I can't put my finger on, but I just feel he's not the strongest and isn't as strong as people think. Still really strong, but I think his reputation precedes him.
Just want to know your opinion guys..
Back in the PH, did you guys think Law used Busho Haki when he cut Vergo's full koka body? please give me some reason too thks.
I hope I'm not in the wrong thread

I'm guessing… he did? Perhaps a combination of his devil fruit power and his haki.
