I just have a feeling that some of them will have signifigance in this very arc after the tournament is over. These guys are a ton more interesting than the NFP for example. They're connected to the world with already established and not established places. The jacket fruit is another bizarre as hell fruit. Also, the sparkly eyes of Jean Ango were freaking funny and Chinjao and Luffy clash looked pretty cool.
At this point I have just accepted that One Piece will take it's time. It did before the whole Whitebeard War started, it has finally slowed down to the pace it was at Thriller Bark.
Chapter 716: "Don Chinjao"
-
-
A possible Don Chinjo mini flashback in coming chapters??? I personally would love it.
-
@Tainted:

I'd say a flashback is a given. Otherwise Don Chinjao wouldn't keep whining about Garp being mean to him.
-
Good stuff happening here. Just when I thought the tournament was a way to set up the confrontation with the Dofla family Oda opens up the story in all sorts of ways.
Could the location of the level 6 prisoners have anything to do with the frozen corpse room on Punk Hazard?
The Jake Jake fruit made me wince. It's certainly the weirdest fruit yet & not really sure how it works. It allows Funk to control somebody but only if they voluntarily put him on? Is that it or has he unlocked further modes for using it? I wasn't sure if Boo was strong enough to knock both brothers out or if Jake, being on the outside, was a weak spot for his brother. Wonder what would happen if someone like Luffy accidentally put him on. Beware the lurking jacket of doom!
Chinjao certainly started to show some personality quirks, bull-headed & a bit absent minded very much like Garp. Laughed out loud with the scene where Luffy displayed his mantra dodging Jean & Chinjao racked up all the pointy bits.
With Luffy forced to keep his identity down-low wonder if Oda put him in there to show us exactly how a battle of pure CoC haki works.
Waiting on later translation but there was something about the way he blamed Garp for the loss of his treasure… really out of leftfield guess, but could we be looking at Luffy's other grandfather?Hoping next week doesn't cut away from the conclusion.
-
Don't know if its mangapanda but jean referred to the main guys who escaped with luffy like jinbe ,buggy' and crocodile as the "jailbreak team". Is that what the marines are calling them?
-
Dat Jinbe, Dat Level 6, Dat Iva, Dat CoC clash and most important of all, Dat, JINBE. Good chapter.
Not many fodder in OP, just interesting characters.
Ye! Finally.. a Jinbe's face..
Feed me more, Oda. :ninja:

_From Aoihge's translation:
" How Garp stole his vast wealth.. how he took away his memories of his youth, his strength, everything. "_
I really believe that dent Garp gave Don C is the root of all of this (amnesia). His memories of his Youth is obvious, but the "lost treasures" could also be related to past memories of comrades and adventure that became lost when Garp cracked his cranium.

I guess it's a Celebrate Poster this time..

Exactly how strong is luffy? steamrolling through block C like no problem.Diamante does not seem to be intimidated at all by seeing luffy's strength so far does he really thinks he can defeat luffy easily and thinks bellamy can assasinate him.We know doffy has faith in him and thinks he can handle luffy but still we get a feeling that luffy will defeat him on mid diff. Also how the four fighters of Donquixote family were shown in number Lao G is 3rd so will luffy fight him after winning block C or does a block winner has to fight all four at same time then face Diamante?.
LOL he might have CoC as well, every one and their mothers seems to have it now a days. lol a Smiley CoC :ninja:
but in all seriousness, if DD really aims to be PK, his strongest crew mate should possess it or at least be able to handle those who does.
-
So finally, shit gets real. It's a pity the Funk Brothers didn't get to show more, some of the participants should appear again in the upcoming arcs, or even later on this one.

Maybe this is it. I hope we get a little flashback of Chinjao in the next chapters to clear this up.
-
If would be funny if ChinJao was a skinny tall man, without a beard and with long hair when he was young

So, Luffy has to pound his skull some so that his memory comes back?
-
So, Luffy has to pound his skull some so that his memory comes back?
Someone on another forum speculated that maybe Luffy will hit him so hard in the head that he regains (some) his memories and decides to end the fight with Luffy, being grateful and everything.
Possibly getting his memories back will allow him to forgive Garp and Luffy.
-
Nice chap, can't wait for next week. A poster by Oda is great.
-
Knowing luffy, he probably wasn't paying much attention even if something was said.
I'm glad something got mentioned of the Lvl 6 prisoners - i wonder if we'll learn of the others that escaped, but its interesting that only Shiliew from the BB crew was mentioned and not the other 4 that left with BB as well…i wonder if there is a reason for that....?
I think it's because although Shiliew was kept on level 6, he wasn't a level 6 prisoner per say. Like he was imprisoned there more out of necessity than to hide his existence from the world like the others. I imagine the WG would have information about Shiliew be a lot more visible to the general public than the level 6 prisoners who they still want to be expunged from history.
I would love it if the theory about Garp having punched Chinjao so hard he broke a continent not only gave him the indent in his skull, but actually amnesia as some people have alluded to.
I really enjoyed this chapter, the jacket power is another of these great original abilities that Oda thinks of, but god did it creep me out looking at it.
Oda is managing to continue to build a richer and more diverse world every week, but has still managed to put strength limiters on these guys, while really showing Luffy's improvement over the timeskip. These guys are all a big deal and widely known in the New World, but it's been made clear that Luffy and Don are on another level entirely.
I don't really understand some people's annoyance at Luffy and Don dominating the competition like they did at the end of the chapter. If Luffy had struggled against the guys in C block, it would have been these exact same people who would have been saying things "OMG what was the point of the timeskip if he can't even oneshot these guys".
-
I get that some people dont like the tournament but calling it a waste of time makes me lawl at times. Ive always viewed the tournament as a way for Oda to do several things.
1). World build and show how much of a scramble is going on to power up in the new world right now with all these different factions competing for the Mera Mera no Mi. (Bart is working for someone, we know who Jesus is working for, Luffy's ambition, and Cavedish/Rebecca ambition, etc.)
2). Show the difference in power level. This has been pretty much going on since Block A. Jesus quickly defeats all competitors (league of his own), Block B was spent hyping King Punch which was in turn used to show the strength of Bart's shield. Block C literally has been showing power level differences past two chapters. Im okay with people being OHKO if it shows the necessary gap in their powers. It shows that while Sai is formidable against lower and mid tier opponents he pales in comparision to upper and elite tier of the new world. (it kills me when ppl see action simply as action, there is context there that is useful information in the grand scheme of things. so put simply the navy of theirs obviously pales in comparison to the marines navy etc.) Block D will also follow this pattern. showing how strong each individual is then by a process of eliminating each other. the gaps in their strength.
3). Suspense. While Luffy is stuck fighting in the tournament, there is a lot of things happening outside of it which is beginning to come to a boil. (fuji/law/dofla) as well as the dwarves rendezvous to free the prisoners/attack dofla stronghold/strawhat alliance destroy factory. I like the juxtaposition of both these events because they are BOTH important. The plot line around what will become of the Mera Mera no Mi IS important.(at least it is to Luffy and that is enough for me.) The non tourney stuff is the overall goal and over arching plot but depends heavily on what happens within the tournament itself. depending on who gets the fruit may dictate whether Luffy decides to follow Law with his plan or chase after Jesus etc. The two plotlines are not entirely independent of each other.
Im too lazy to write more points. Feel free to critique anything ive said. I believe those to be the strongest points IMO.
FYI i dont post much i joined this site semi recently been reading weekly since sabaody arc and been reading this forum for entertainment for the past few years as well.

don't know what is with everyone, but this is a fun chapter. Some people here forget that One Piece is more like a journey and with that you need to enjoy every step, even if it isn't the Dlfy-Law-Fuji fight that you so want to see (and I but i don't bicker about it). Is it just me or what Chinjao said about garp doesn't really sound like garp at all? Maybe he's exaggerating or he meant the consequences of his defeat to garp but still this is a bit strange.
I hope Chinjao hates Garp for some really stupid reason. Garp ate his food or something like that.
-
You know who I called 'fodders' in my summary?
The nameless gladiators Kelly Funk mowed down. Those are what fodders are.
Not Ideo, Boo, Sai, or Chinjao.Wait I'm forgetting someone. Oh well. Sparkly eyes.
This. Man, I'm getting a bit tired of people complaining about the tournament chapter after chapter. I get it, some of the participants are not that strong, but honestly, who gives a fuck? Up until now they have been original characters with a wide variety of powers and backgrounds, and help expand the One Piece world and giving us some information ( Kanokuni, the Mogaro and Prodense kingdoms, the New World Central Fighting Club, the Impel Down prisoners, Elbaf's new generation ), which is what I like the most, not everything revolving about the main characters, and I think that's really helpful for an adventure manga like this one and makes the world feel alive.
Also, they have the potential to not only be seen on this tournament but to appear again later on, imagine for example seeing Elizabello on the Reverie, Ango trying to hunt down the ID escapees or Hack and Jinbe talking together. All those things I mentioned are above fighting power on my book. And about the ones who say the pacing is too slow, I don't think that by any means, for me it's perfect as it is, getting to see a bit of every named participant of each block instead of just rushing through it and having no substance at all. This tournament is the kind of thing that is better judged when read in one go.
PS: I'm finally getting Elizabello out of my avatar :U Thanks, RKTGX95

Good news, in next issue we will have a One Piece poster (and Weekly Jump Heroine Gravure Poster drawn by artist of Shokugeki no Soma), thanks Zeromcd from MangaHelpers for the information and kaze1028 for the scan.
http://thumbnails107.imagebam.com/26811/8ffcc8268100769.jpg
Maybe the poster is chapter Color Spread (like in chapter 595) but who knows XD.
That's the issue going on sale on 12th August, right?
-
Lol at anyone who thinks these characters are filler. We'll definitely be getting the Chinese trio for the Kanokuni/Wanokuni arc. Jean Ango seems to be a tie in for the situation with the level 6 prisoners and even Ideo seems like an important tie in to the New World fighting club which might be a bigger organization than we thought.
I just love the switch up for the final fight we got this chapter, it's so exciting and hilarious at the same time.
Guts: This is incredible, these two fighters will give us the epic climax of a life time!
both combatants get easily kicked out by the real monsters
Everyone: O__________O
Awesome.

Ha, I like this theory.

So I am not the only one who think about it
-
I wish people would just enjoy the damn action in this chapter, it was so good!
Its like they expect a Ponyglyph to be found each week and the True History to be revealed tomorrow. -

I don't see how! First, because he explicitly said Garp, unless both Luffy Grandparent's are called Garp O_O. Second, is the job of a Marine to destroy the Dreams, Treasures and Youth(Prison or Death!) of Pirates, so is not strange that Garp made that to Chinjao!!

I've been reading OP weekly for two weeks now and they still haven't found it gnarf gnarf

Obviously what happens outside the Colosseum is more interesting, big and epic than the Tournament, though there are more seeds for the future of the series in the Tournament than on Green Bit.
So people should not complain in what they don't have and just read well what they have. -

This made me laugh but couldnt agree more.
-
Alright chapter, maybe too many one hit KOs, makes some of these supposedly big names of the new world appear less threatening, but whatever.
-
This was a really fun chapter to read. Now I think I'm glad that Oda fleshed out some of the other combatants and gave them cool special abilities because it made the other fights a lot more fun to read. I think these tournament chapters are going to be really fun to read in volume form.
On another note, is this cover story going to go anywhere? Because it's been pretty crappy for a while now. At this point I'd rather just have the normal cover pages of the strawhats playing with animals.
-
Would be interesting to see how the "jake jake fruit" works in combination with a vessel who also have a DF. How would it work with a Logia o.O
How about BB, activates the dark dark fruit and sucks in the jake jake ability. What then? BB inside a human who no longer has the ability…does he explode?`? -
There's also that little side plot of him defeating a Yonko Kaidou, and possibly Donflamingo. If he would have struggled here and now , I'd facepalm when he eventually beat the formers.
-
Ah, another really good chapter. :)
-Going back to this scene, makes it obvious now that Caribou's gonna save the granny in due time. Would actually be funny if it echoes Luffy saving Neptune from Hody, but with Caribou failing to actually hurt Scotch much.^^
-Kelly's ability is rather interesting. Makes me think he actually could reappear, because his powers has a very high potential.
-Sai shows that he's obviously going to keep some importance by showing off his character like that. He reminded me kinda of Smoker, when he beat Vergo to the ground saying that he's not going to let him touch his men. Though I would have also liked to see Sai getting really pissed off because of some minor thing.
-From what he's saying Garp really had to have done something on Chinjao. I actually think he's going to have a change of heart, seeing how he's only driven by revenge on Luffy's grandfather right now. That's also a thing I like about the tournament: No character so far is really a bad guy. They're fighting to win and often use dirty tricks, but in the end they didn't show any signs of being evil. Heck, even backstabbing Dagama told the people he betrayed that he would give them compensation later if they want.
-The whole scene about Jean Ango was just hilarious. Luffy not giving a shit; Ango's face, when he noticed Chinjao; Luffy just taking his helmet back afterward and then the reveal that Jean's head is actually shaped like a cactus. :D
-Though his line about the Level 6 prisoners was some juicy information as well. Luffy wondering about Iva is also a nice detail. He's the second person Luffy is wondering how he's doing after the timeskip, right? Before we had Johnny & Yosaku at Fishman Island.
-Sai & Ideo would have lost after some time against Luffy and Chinjao in an one on one fight for sure, but I don't think it would have ended that quickly if they weren't surprised by them. Both of them still didn't loose conciousness and seem like they would be able to fight, if they wouldn't have fallen out of the ring.
-Chinjao looks like Luffy's mightiest foe so far in the New World. Looking forward to the battle.
-Oh, forgot to mention inbetween: Gatz was also hilarious again this chapter. xD -
Anyone complaining that the chapter was uneventful should be kindly directed to this weeks Naruto chapter
Get a taste of what real meandering is like. -
Cool chapter! I don't think we will see any of the other tournament folks except for the winners since they are just named "filler"
characters. So not much extra story than just building on the tournament. I like it. -
In my opinion this was a great chapter. Fun, action, new information. The escape of more level 6 prisioners was a nice addition. It seems that CoC strengthens CoA. The only thing I dindt like was that the fight didnt seem to be over/decided.
-
Holy shit, this chapter was freaking epic!! I'm loving the shit out of these fights in this block so far!
I especially loved the clash between Don and Luffy at the end since now I see what happens when you combine CoA and CoC together.
-
Rather meh chapter, though MP's translation didn't help at all.
I'm actually kind of disappointed, as I loved the last 2 chapters. In the end, it turned out that I wasn't enjoying the tournament simply because I didn't care about any of the characters. The instant Luffy started fighting I finally grew interested. While I still don't think it was necessary, it is at least, now enjoyable.
-
I really liked this chapter! very fun read. I wonder if there were as many complains back in the days when people were reading long arcs like Skypea or Alabasta on a weekly basis. I caught up by the beginning of TB and there were complains but they weren't as popular.
-

Man I´ve been lurking for quite a couple of years around here, since 2008 I think, but never have I seen so much of a hated vibe from a thread as I´ve seen here. It feels as if somehow the community feels dissapointment but its unable to express it correctly due to their liking of the manga. That being said, I LOVE that Jean´s hair is Cacti!!!
-
You know with the Punk Hazard being 90% plot, I'm actually very glad the tournament is more action then anything. For those who are complaining about how "dull" and "boring" this chapter is to you; don't worry you will get your plot geez. It's fun to have a little fist action :P
-
Scotch has napped Granny??? Oh snap
C Block progresses as usual, with the beginning being the Funk brothers new fusion. Or, rather….one of them became a jacket and draped himself over the other. Like I said in the spoiler thread, I do think this ability is a tad....general. Wapol's fruit, involving eating, did more or less the same thing with Chess and Kuromarimo.
But then again, fusions are cool either way.
The Funk bro combo takes down Boo, but Sai avenges his brother and takes him down. Then bam! He clashes with Ideo.
Meanwhile, Luffy and Chinjao are about to square off, all the while Jean Ango is rattling on and on about capturing the two of them (I wonder how he learned about the Impel Down incident, and like Luffy, I wonder…..how is Iva-chan?) Chinjao promptly KOs him with a headbutt.
Awesome, but seeing as how Jean was an interesting bounty hunter….meh, I wanted to see more of him.
And before Chinjao can take down the grandson of his bitter foe, the two of them knock out Sai and Ideo. Heh, reminds me of Whisky Peak. But still, kinda wished they lasted....just a little longer.
But then the two of them finally clash with Haki ablaze! Now Luffy's gonna have to go all out here.....no way will Chinjao lose so easily. His identity will most likely be revealed next chapter, and we might see a flashback of Chinjao and Garp? It's gonna be intense either way, so I can't wait.
-
I think unless Oda is going to make use of characters later like Chinjao, Bartolo, and Cavendish then we shouldn't waste chapters on them. I did like Ideo but to make them worth introducing he has to ignore the main plot(s) of the arc. I think the tournament will be better after D block is over, the winners vs the Doflamingo family will be interesting.
-
That Jacket Jacket Fruit is kind of interesting, however… So Jean Ango have been able to collect some nice money thanks to Luffy , Iwa , Jinbe, Bleackbeard & Co. I Wonder how he found out about the Level 6 escape's , it meant to be Top Secret. My guess is, he catched one of them who appeard in the New World and got some informations out of him. Lmao at the reaction of Jean Ango when he saw that all those Weapons landed on Chinjao's stomach. I Also find it quite funny how the Commentator & the Crowd consider Sai & Ideo one of them to be likely the winner of the Block , when all of the sudden Luffy & Chinjao knock them out Whiskey Peak style. I Really wonder what exactly Garp did to Chinjao... , i am pretty sure there will be most likely a little flashback next Chapter revealing it. That CoA Clash looked really awesome , like Aohige mentioned it reminded me of the little Clash between Shanks & Whitebeard. I wonder what an impact CoC Haki will have , it definitly will play a role in that fight. All in all i enjoyed this Chapter well done Oda Sensei.
-
People are complaining about this chapter?! sigh
It's soooo funny that Argo wanted to go after the level 6 inmates xD Bad thing is, no strong Bounty Hunter yet again!!
Those last pages were great, can't wait for the next chapter! (I'd rather have this fight resolved then gettin back to Law again - or Nami - but that would also do…!)
And I think that Happou Navy can't be THAT dangerous if their new Commander is this weak. I know Luffy is pretty exceptional himself, but I can't imagine those guys opposing a Yonkou...can't wait to learn more about them.
-
It's kinda really cool to see Chinjao because he is a good indication of probably how strong Garp still is
[h=2][/h] -
I don't really care about the action itself. It's just that most of the designs are really awesome and these characters may later on be links to other arcs. I'd like to see one of these characters in a cover story ("The hunt for level 6 prisoners"). Now let's see how long it takes for Luffy's identity to get revealed and chaos to start..
-
It's kinda really cool to see Chinjao because he is a good indication of probably how strong Garp still is
We know Garp is leaps and bounds above him. What we don't know is when Garp thrashed Chinjao and how bad it was.
-
You should rather ask how many people were threatening to quit reading One Piece
Was it worse than nowadays?

I at least want to know the names of the people Luffy is KO'ing. i find this tournament to be a cultural gathering.

I think people are selling Sai rather short here. He's fully concious after taking a surprise attack Jet Stamp kick in the back, he's only out of the running because he's out of bounds. Really, transplant in any Straw Hat crew member instead of Sai, or hell even Law and Jinbe, and you'd get the same result…unless people are suggesting Sai should have gotten eyes in the back of his head/rooted himself to the ground/bent the laws of physics to keep him in the ring, etc.
