I actually liked a theory Aohige had (I don't know if serious or not-so-much); seeing that Wanokuni is One Piece's Japan, and Kanokuni is OP's China, their countries could be enemies, just like in real life (just recently there was all that conflict over a stupid microscopic island)

That's Korea and Japan you goof. But the point still stands, I wonder if Oda is setting up some sort of relationship between Kano and Wano. It IS a good opportunity to introduce characters from the country (such as through the tournament) as a preface before they get to Wano.

It seemed like Sai's axe wasn't black despite using CoA. I don't see how Luffy will be able to fight Dofla this arc, it's obvious he's about to get hurt some during this fight. And whoever he fights next will obviously be strong as well. I just don't see him fighting Dofla and beating him not at full health. I also think we won't see much more than another page or 2 of the Law/Dofla/Fuji fight because Oda will reveal the extent of Dofla's powers later on.

Because Hardening is an advanced application of CoA, not a visual cue for generic CoA.

It's also Japan and China (they have a microscopic island issue too). East Asia is a veritable cauldron of hatred, but all that goes back much farther than any island disputes (which are not the causes of the hatred; just symptoms).

That said, I really doubt Oda would make Wano and Kano hate each other. That'd be sending an unnecessarily nasty message to young readers, and would be uncharacteristic of an author who loves to emphasize that people should look past superficial differences and accept each other.

But precisely because of the already existing conflict, Oda could use the chance to actualy give the readers a message of trying to solve this issues.

It's like Fishman Island; racism and intolerance exist, it's a fact, and Oda's choice was to show it to the readers, and then explain WHY it's a stupid stance to take in life, and the terrible consequences it might have (in manga fashion, of course).

To show the conflict and then explain why it's a completely useless conflict by making the parties involved (China and Japan) end up being all friendly is a very One Piece way to make a point.

Anyway, I haven't seen it mentioned yet, so just a short thought that I found rather amusing:

Pretty much ever since the tournament – and more to the point, I guess, the block format of its first rounds -- was revealed, I recall seeing quite a few people theorizing that Luffy would simply use CoC Haki to, if not win the block, at least severely thin down the competition. Others argued back that that would be far too dull, and that there was no way Oda would utilize something like that.

Point being, at any rate, I thought it was pretty funny when this chapter basically proved both groups wrong. Haki really was used to deal with a fair bit of the nameless masses of the block, but it never crossed anybody's mind that such a move might come from someone other than Luffy.

overall a pretty great chapter; the tournament's definitely a lot of fun
when I saw the spoilers I was afraid that none of the contestants were going to be eliminated, but it seems that one of the Funk Bros is out (well, not technically, but they fused, so it's basically one less person) and Boo got his ass whooped.
So, the tournament's progressing as it should and there was lots of great exposition and character development. Plus, the cliffhanger wasn't a nailbiter or anything, which makes the break a lot more bearable. Pleased.

Also, I have to say Oda sort of threw a curveball with the Chinjao family!! Everyone was predicting that the numbers represented their allegiance with Kaidou (and maybe it still does, who knows), but it seems that they correspond to their place in the Happo Navy. Boo doesn't have a number too, which makes a lot of sense.

Oh wait, there's ANOTHER island issue going on? I really need to pay more attention :sad:. Gee there's surely a whole lot of pointless islands to squabble over (makes sense due to ownership of parts of the ocean and fishing…w/e).

Yeah the East Asians generally have a weird relationship with each other (though a lot of it is directed against Japan) and for a legitimately good reason. But yeah, don't want to get off track. I'm pretty curious what Oda has in mind with Hanokuni since he is basing it on China. Having the Ha and Wa facing each other in political conflict would be kinda iffy for a child's comic, but then again so was some stuff in Fishman Island.

Great chapter. Loved the part where the bounty hunter mentioned some idiot breaking into the prison. The boxer Ideo was very cool as well. When I read the mangapanda translation and saw the 100 million pirates instead of 100 million bounty I facepalmed.. Maybe Bart wants to get the fruit for Luffy? I don't really have my hopes up but it would be cool if he idolized Luffy and wanted to get the fruit to give to him for admittance to his crew or something. :P Doubt it, but we'll see.

Couple things I found interesting. So many people in the ring recognize CoC, thus it says a lot of the new world and the fighting level in the ring. What is also interesting is the fact that many opponents suffered the CoC. My theory is that the stronger the person gets, the stronger CoC gets as well, so even with a standard strong opponent, they will still be knocked out if the person who has CoC is extremely strong.

Anyway. I think Luffy will win, but I don't know how he'll win so many opponents who are strong. If he was fighting one on one against Burgess, I think he'd win. But if he was tired, I don't know.

Is this our first time reading one piece? B/c Oda sometimes brings back the most obscure references. We don't know, but I'm leaning towards them being part of a future arc or a foundation for a future story because of how much of the focus has been on them.

Also, Jean Ango might become very relevant this arc. Casually stealing something off Luffy's head is not something characteristic of fodder.

Really, we're talking about a whole world now, so even if you're an omgwtfhax character, i doubt it that the entire,whole world will/must look at you.

About the chapter..umm, just average i guess, but its ok, since when i compared it to another "famous" ongoing manga, at least this all-out brawl still got some points, and a few characters still going down, not just running in circle. We'll see how this go next chapter.

And I'm really curious if there will be any interference with the tournament, or if it will run as it's supposed to be. Anyways, I'd rather see Zorro fight Cavendish than having Luffy fight him. Seeing as they are both Supernovas from 2 years ago, there's a slight possibility of it happening. Even then it's still possible that Cavendish will be defeated by someone else. He doesn't seem like a villain at all. Don Chinjao on the other hand…

I'm also curious as for how many chapters it will take for us to see the action going on at the flower fields. I'm really excited as for how large scale of a battle we'll be witnessing.

This chapter was greatly paced for Luffy's portion of the story. It had a great stride into staging up the big-tier characters from different lands, strengths and backgrounds than our usual pirate/navy set-up. Then when all contestants sized up, Luffy comes out on top, reminding the world that he is worth 400,000,000 for a reason :D

I´ve got mixed feelings with this chapter, even if I rather liked it, there was this hollow feeling I can´t deal with as if something was missing. Ideo and a boxing torunament, maybe in the future we will visit the place along with the SHs, as for his personality I cannot say much as he didn´t show a particular trait besides the ambition of getting stronger. To me, he seems like a hardworking-wanna get strong dude and I had some "zoro vibes" coming from him. As to his alignment, he seems pretty neutral and balanced, obviously he is not the one to brag. Actually none of the C block contenders seem to be the braging-boasting type, which extrangely hypes them even more. Jean the Bandit. I agree with the poster who said that stealing Lucy´s helmet should not be an easy task, thus the guy knows what he is doing. He being literally a "weapon sniper" seems kind of odd and a memento to Vander Decken, well more or less. His highlight was without any doubt his hat, how cool can a HAt be. I would like to have a Jean-Angotori soon.The funk brothers are truly funky, considering what happened maybe the younger has in his arsenal one devil fruit already, maybe a coat coat fruit? who knows. What MYsteriously delicious brothers. I didn´t quite liked the kanokuni trio, even if I´m unsure as to why their abilities seemed dulled compared to the other competitors; By no means they are weaker, but visually they just didn´t make that much impact on me. They seem to use a shockwave style, A la whitebeard but whitout the overpowered df implication. And Don with his COC and miniWBpunches is making his way to Luffy. I said it in the beginning and I´ll say it again, I felt something missing from this chapter even if I cannot pinpoint what it was…

I personally wouldn't mind if Sulieman/Orlumbus/Damask fodderize Rebecca, she just seems so out of her league. Taking a gander at the character reactions: Rebecca looked in awe while Cavendish was like "meh you better have been able to at least do that" and Barto just looked giddy at the thought of fighting Luffy, also judging by the gladiators' comments, Rebecca was getting pushed around by Spartan, that screams fodder.
