Did you hear about a recent ranking of the top 20 most selling shonen manga of all time in the world ?
I saw it in a french website but it looks weird : http://adala-news.fr/2013/02/top-20-des-meilleures-ventes-manga-shonen-de-tous-les-temps/
And apparently the original source is http://matome.naver.jp/
huh, so Death Note really doesn't do much business outside of Japan (old figure for that was 26.5mill, so it's only a slight increase)
interesting figures to be sure, especially when contrasted with the same titles just in japan. like One Piece and Dragon Ball would be in opposite positions, and Hokuto no Ken and JJBA would be higher than Bleach, for example
A few of those figures are a bit less than what Shueisha gave for their top 10 series by volumes sold as of Feb 2012. Like YYH is listed there at 47 million, while Shueisha said 49 million. Kenshin's 50 million there, 55 according to Shueisha.
hmmm that has me doubtful of the whole thing, at least enough to say it's probably inaccurate. shame
Hmmm, how much the little figurines could cost? And how random would be their release?
They are rounding down to the half millions, right? Because this figure published by Shueisha says that One Piece has 273,480,000 sold in Japan as of February 2012. And I know the markets outside Japan are insignificant in comparison, but from what I understand, One Piece is pretty popular in Asian countries, as well as pretty popular in France and Germany(the next two biggest manga markets), and mildly popular in the U.S.A. In fact, this French chart shows that the print run for some One Piece volumes is 100,000. Are you telling me that with every volume, One Piece can't manage to make up a quarter of a million more sales to bump up their figure to 274,000,000?
The same goes for Bleach's figures, which are seemingly rounded down to 78,000,000 on this new chart, but Shueisha gives the exact figure as 78,650,000. Bleach is considerably more popular that One Piece is the States, so I find it hard to believe that it can't make up another 350,000 more volumes sold outside of Japan to make their figure 79,000,000.
If it wasn't for Dragon Ball's vastly higher sales in the new figures compared to the ones Shueisha published last year, I'd think that this wasn't actually world wide sales. So perhaps these figures aren't entirely accurate or up to date for every series. I mean, it would actually be pretty difficult to collect accurate sales figures from every country and every publisher. Especially series that changed licensing publishers and for old series that may be impossible to find old data.
Just realized, there's no Ichigo figurine.
those six open slots mean he's probably incoming, unless the title's really fallen that much out of favour

More like, the figures they are using all come from completely different time.
Not to mention apparently ignoring several titles, for example…. where the fuck is TOUCH?
Touch, Dokaben, and Astro Boy all sold over 100 million copies. And all ran in shounen magazines.
Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize "all time" only means "in the past two decades" in French. My bad.
Can't trust those frenchmen.
EDIT: BTW, according to the Kiruko spoiler guy, the bottom 5 TOC is
Medaka, Kochikame, Kiruko, Hungry Joker, and Cross Manage.
Yeah, the 350 million figure for Dragonball is something I believe came from when DB evolution was being done, and I'm honestly still not convinced of the legitimacy of that number. because as popular as DBZ was, I find it hard to believe it sold over around 200 million outside of Japan which is far more than in Japan. Especially since in places like the US it was mostly the anime that was popular.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Yeah, just did a check, and according to the site for the new movie, DB manga has only sold 230 million worldwide. THat 350 million number is way off
^there are conflicting reports on Dragon Ball figures, 230 million is claimed usually officially, and 350 million figure came I believe from the DB Evolution movie source.
230 million does sound far more believable.
Yeah I just noted that. I'd trust the official source far more than what I'm guessing was a claim done to hype a movie that had probably very little actual research put into it. Especially when the official figure makes vastly more sense
According to this article, the official website for the upcoming movie, Dragonball Z:Battle of the Gods, claims that Dragonball has 230million copies sold worldwide.
I love Kiruko's volume cover. So much cuteness (and green)…
According to a german newspaper, which had a good article about One Piece, it sold 3,5 million tanks with 65 volumes. One Piece is the second most popular manga after DBZ with 7 million copies sold. Nice little tidbit the starting print of One Piece volumes is 40000 and has to be reprinted after 3 months.

That's quite interesting to know. Non-Japanese sales numbers are hard to come by. And if this is true, it kind of proves that those sales figures provided earlier are either not worldwide or inaccurate or both.
Any chance you could provide a source? Scan the newspaper or maybe the have an online publication?
230 million makes more sense for Dragonball since they made a huge deal about OP being the first to hit 200 mill just a couple years back and thats when it was just pulling ahead of Dragonball. (Of course at its current rate it'll be at 300 by 2015…)
OP is of course aided by the fact its been running longer that Dragonball did, so its gained more momentum, is STILL running, and has more volumes. (Dragonball stopped at what, 42, and OP is approaching 70 now.)
Well the 200 mil was about 200 million IN JAPAN, which NO other manga has achieved. DB has only sold around 160 mil in japan, with the other 70 million being international (Which is still huge for world wide sales)
On the other hand, Dragon Ball has been released in different format. I know that in France we got 3 (Normal, Perfect and Double).
So I think it's quite difficult to compare the two manga if we don't know the sales of the "Normal" edition of Dragon Ball.
@Maxy:
To be fair to the other new series around at the time, but Kuroko probably deserved them more. I mean look at it now, for one thing.
Anyway, animeace on mangahelpers posted the currently revealed JStars nendroid figures being released for Jump's 45th, and so I'll repost them here for you guys. They're pretty spesh:

For real, I want almost all of these, but Hibari, Ranko, Chitoge and Ryotsu top the list. SO GOOD.Also bets on the last six involving Ichigo, Oga+Beel, Koro-Sensei, Hanamichi Sakuragi, Yoh Asakura and Hinata from Haikyuu?
I mean there's a million other suitable choices, but i figure they're safe bets, between historical status and NPG promotional stuff.
Add in Oga, Bobobo, and Koro-sensei and you have a wonderful roster for the next Jump Super Ultimate Mega Stars.
Krillin, Ichigo and Wingman are now confirmed as well, from a mag scan Perroloco put up over at mangahelpers: http://stat.ameba.jp/user_images/20130121/21/yoyocom69/e5/dd/j/o0500054412386687945.jpg
Two of these aren't surprising, but Wingman? Awesome, but I didn't see it coming
My guess : Kenshiro, Sakuragi, Hiruma
I don't see Kenshiro happening because of the whole seperation from shueisha thing, but he appeared in JUS, so I guess it's as likely as anything

Issue 15
Cover, Lead CP: Ansatsu Kyoushitsu
CP: Medaka Box, Nisekoi, Haikyuu!! I have opinions about this, but more importantly it looks like Medaka Box could be ending next week, which is both good and bad, but mostly good because a lot of people are sick of it and the last few chapters have been GREAT ending material.
The ideal time was during the Anashin'in arc, but after the last battle, it's a good point to end.
I read again the Medaka Box's thread and saw myself being converted.
Soma is KICKING ASS and TAKING NAMES yeah.
Seriously, Saiki, AC, and Souma are supernovas that came into WSJ swinging and wrecking shit up in the orders of power.
Happy that with garbage like Reborn! ending it gave a chance to new and fresher series.
And i don't know where the Medaka is ending rumour started since there hasn't been an annoucement.
Medaka could end next week, or it could spin randomly into a new arc and run for another 6 months.
or maybe it's time for a fully-fledged Good Loser Kuwagawa spinoff to replace the main show…
Korosensei and Souma are kicking ass and taking names.
Edit: What the? I was typing my message in before Aohige posted then I submitted and saw his.
We totally synched right now.

Yep, according with the spoilers I got it seems there's still one more arc left.
glad to see Souma doing great….among Kiruko,HJ and CM my money is on HJ to fall first...
Nisekoi is the true enigma....for such a stereotype manga to do this great for so long...
Well there's a debate there about what's stereotype and what merely skirts stereotype whilst doing something unique unto itself, but I don't think there's reason to wonder, as even typical series can do well
The reason Nisekoi is a success despite the stereotypical setting is that it's charismatic and very well executed.

Sorry, but I couldn't disagree more. It might've started out that way, but it quickly devolved into typical harem bullshit, with an unlikable, dense protagonist and a downright annoying, stupidly tsundere and smack-happy main love interest. Let's not forget all the damn keys that managed to show up, too.
I wanted to like it, but I finally dropped it after chapter 60 (which is rare for me). Hell, the only reason I even stuck around that long was for Seishirou…
ohboy.
Looking at the next issue preview page, Medaka seems like wrapping up.
Uh oh…so we got Medaka finishing, HJ and Kiruko bound to be axed. Is it possible for CM to actually survive if Medaka completes its run and HJ and Kiruko fall out in the coming weeks? I think CM has some leniency to fill out the third volume so it is possible that HJ and Kiruko might get axed once they finish out filling out the 2nd volume?
To clarify… SPOILERS!
! The preview page for Jump issue 15 2012 says:
! "It's graduation day, and Medaka is nowhere to be found! And what is Zenkichi up to?"
! It's either start of the final arc of Medaka, or going to MEDAKA IN COLLEGE YEARS. I sincerely hope not the latter.
And yeah, if Medaka is wrapping up, one of the bottom three may survive.
Just wondering? Did Medaka stay terrible to the end?
I have only seen the show, but I pretty much felt like I was being spat on by Nishi Oisin the entire time, but out of masochism I stuck with it,
and yeah, it stayed terrible, but made me feel bad that it actually had some cool ideas that I just wish some other mangaka thought to use first.
And I have been curious, so I just flip through it in Jump time to time, but idk how it could even end coherently, for a while I have just seen random reverse time skip toddlers. Weird…..
And I think Kiruko getting axed is probably gonna all depend on how volume one does. I think both series are getting some sort of special treatment behind the curtain, but I think it is of note how long it comparably took the first volume of Cross Manage to come out, and how fast Kiruko has come out.
I don't expect Cross Manage to be doing any killer numbers, but hopefully it will rank at least high enough so we can see the numbers it does do, and if Kiruko gets anywhere near the 100k mark, pretty safe to say it will be the one they save from getting axed.

Main premise is exactly like Love-Hina and not long ago 'kagami-no-kuni',which was very much same(actually a bit more exciting and less stereotype) got the boot….
That's why it's success surprised me...

Kiruko has better franchise prospect though…i saw the picture of a Kiruko doll once....
may be it will be a hit among those fabled Otakus in Japan..

100k for Kiruko is completely unrealistic, that's far above what Toriko did on the first week chart of volume 1.
Hell there were doubts even Assassination Classroom was going to hit that. You know 100k first volume is near Bakuman level achievement, and not something a manga scraping the bottom of the TOC is for, right?
Realistically speaking, if Kiruko does 30k the first week, that's far above the expectation.
EDIT: read Medaka's full spoilers. Oh yeah. It's game over.
Guys I want Jump Issue # 15 Preview Page
So from what I read, Medaka Box has at least one more arc to go.
please, i hope Medaka Box will end soon..
So from what I read, Medaka Box has at least one more arc to go.
I don't know bro, from the spoilers it seems like getting-canned level speed, hardly an arc.
EDIT: I moved it to the Medaka thread, so people don't "accidently" click on multiple layers of spoilers. Or something.
I don't know bro, from the spoilers it seems like getting-canned level speed, hardly an arc.
! don't say I didn't warn you
! Jump 14
Medaka flies to the moon on a rocket, not expecting to return home.
Moon dissapears from the sky, and Medaka didn't room.
! One year passes, and the graduation day comes.
! Jump 15 preview
Medaka is nowhere to be seen at the graduation. And what is Zenkichi up to?You tell me that doesn't sound like it's getting canned lol
! Given there're series that are doing far worse, I very much doubt that's the case. Oh, and I already read those spoilers, but I don't get the rocket part. Did she destroy the Moon with that thing?
! It's probably the last arc, albeit a really short one, I dare say.
I don't mean it's getting canned in the next few chapters, but it seriously sounds like ending this season.
The next board of meeting is next month, I think Medaka's already given the notice.
Or is it really ending. This last arc had all the ingredients of a final arc to me, events and speeches that only would happen when a series is heading to its climax.
Looking at the TOC, Cross Game and Hungry Joker and even Kiruko-san did really bad in the rankings, far worse to say little. But we'll see, because I don't know what kind of criteria they follow in those meeting boards.
Gotcha.
