It’s weird. Like it’s probably the least I’ve enjoyed Jump’s lineup, but like the stuff that’s good is REALLY GOOD. There’s just a lot of middling or bad comics too right now, for me at least. I’m sure it’ll pass, but it really is just an odd time for Jump.

Yeah my anti-piracy self is stuck waiting for Monday, 4pm to read them both. Hopefully worth the wait

RE: The "Shueisha" Thread
Personally I’d love a return to the ‘nonsense’ era of Bobobo, or even Mr. Fullswing when it was being funny, but I don’t think it’d sell anymore.
And I think you’ve hit the nail on the head with the ryoga period. Nothing lives long enough to establish its cast. Saiki Kusuo had the advantage of its whole volume 0 leading people in, and everything since then has floundered trying to get pieces in place before they’re cancelled. I don’t know that there’s a good solution outside of Jump getting softer on cancelling titles (which it kind of is, a little bit).
I just hope some good gag manga get settled in soon as possible.

RE: The "Shueisha" Thread
Yeah it’s weird to realise but Gintama, as variable as it is with genre, was kind of holding the line for proper, popular, gag-based comics in Jump the last few months. If neither of these two newbies survive we might be entering the weirdest era for Jump, of just…. less series about jokes. Gonna be odd

RE: The "Shueisha" Thread
You know what, the topic at hand is absolutely about Shueisha, so let’s keep it going a second longer.
The law and what’s moral are not 1:1 the same. Every civil rights movement has come up against what was law at the time. It used to be legal to execute the mentally disabled in some American states. As has been pointed out here, possession of child pornography wasn’t illegal in Japan until fairly recently. If you choose not to understand this very basic idea then sure, Watsuki’s fine and incredibly short hiatus means its fine. But the issue here is people having a moral objection to something that SHOULD carry a far greater punishment, especially as Watsuki’s purchase and ownership of these materials supported the abuse of these children and perpetuates the problems of child pornography and trafficking.ALSO Japan isn’t a monolith. Some sub 200k of readers buying his book doesn’t mean that all of Japan has decided it’s okay. Some people are still super opposed to what he’s done. Some are fine with it. Again, reason for moral disappointment in those people, and also in Shueisha for profiting off of a pedophile. (Which also, HE WAS CONVICTED. Dude is a pedophile, and shall continue to carry that, as unapologetic as he is, for the rest of his gross life.
Shimabukuro is a more difficult case, involving questions of whether a person deserves second chances, and as to what the severity of his crime was. Two years punishment for soliciting (not having sex with if news stories are accurare) a 16 year old (still wrong as shit, but notably older than the children described in Watsuki’s conviction. I don’t believe Jump should have rehired him so soon for Ring, and as much as I enjoyed Toriko I don’t know that that was right either. But at least in that case it had been another four years and there’s been no further word. I don’t think it makes it okay, and I’m still uncomfortable supporting him, but at the least I can understand people being more okay with him than Watsuki.
Also also also and finally, has it been considered among us that the reason Japan has one of the lowest rates of… child crimes... is that the criteria for conviction and punishment is clearly lower than in other countries? It’s not a huge leap to make, considering the subject at hand.

Anyway, how about them new serials, huh? I’m excited for a double dose of gag manga.

I’ve translated and expanded KTR’s Jump Assistant Chart, which is a super good resource for knowing who worked for who and such. Enjoy, if you’d like -
RE: The "Shueisha" Thread
Yeah dude’s from Ancient Greece, gotta be naked for sports back then!
…. the people in the present day are a bit shocked by it.
I think Yamazaki gets away with it on the cover because it’s a little cartoony one, as well -
RE: The "Shueisha" Thread
WTF with Olympia Kyklos?!
It’s another time travel book by Yamazaki Mari, like Thermae Romae, this one with a Grecian pot decorator travelling to Japan’s 1964 Olympics, hence the cover. It’s one of the best Grand Jump books right now, funny weird thing that it is.

I remember that Inumaru Dashi was solid with kids but there has to have been something more recent than that.

Also that the 8 week thing is a myth from over a decade ago, and that the table if contents aren’t actually a ranking.
