Apparently the schools in Westhampton (my highschool) still haven't gotten power. Honestly at this point they might as well cancel school for the rest of the week.
Alright whose going to be underwater for the next few days

@Monkey:
I think more people are killed in horrible domestic things every day in India.
Obviously, I was just disputing the charge that "only" 14 people died due to Sandy.
-
Well also lots of people are losing jobs, homes and businesses because of this…so there's a lot of lives ruined, on top of deaths.
-
The estimates for storm damage so far are around $20 billion dollars; to put that into perspective, there are around 100 countries whose total GDP is less than that.
-
It's also to be said that most of Katrina's damages were due to levie's breaking…not the storm itself in terms of wind or rain. I'm not saying this is worse, or comparing the tragedies at all, but I think people are underrating this a little bit...

I don't think they are. Katrina turned New Orleans briefly into a sort of anarchic cut off post-apocalyptic Akira city. It was surreal and I remember how strongly people were just asking "uh how does this happened in the US?". And their were semi-scandals involving FEMA and Bush's handling of that ahead of time.
-
@ monkeyking What area of CT you live in? cause im in middletown, and i feel like barely anything happened, tho shit was closed for two days..
-
So it seems my brother's school is closed for the rest of the week. Most likely my sister's school will follow suit.
Thankfully, I have no power troubles here at home.

- The part you put quotes around was not in the post you were replying to. Interpret a post wrongly and come out looking like an ass.
- The figure I quoted came from the broadcast I was watching. They obviously ignored the Caribbean because, hell, nobody cares. Seriously, all we in India know about the Caribbean is that they ruled cricket in the 70s and the 80s and that they produce a lot of sprinters. Oh, and Chris Gayle is from there, so it's obviously a fucking cool place.
- I am not belittling a death toll. Just asking for perspective. The day this report was made, a cyclone made landfall on India's south-east coast. More that 200k people were displaced, and counting. And guess what took up more reporting time. At least this got some coverage (now, that is all that is being covered). The Myanmar shit I would have no clue about if I didn't obsessively read the BBC website at work everyday.
-
An image of the storm from above:
pictures like that always so amazing to see. It looks so small from space like a swirl in of milk in your coffee but the devastation it caused. It's just incredible. If this is going to be a yearly thing i don't know if there's much that the barrier islands of NJ can do. I mean they probably won't disappear all together but the way people live along the coast will definitely have to change. Outside of building things differently they might just have to suck it up. Would be interesting to see what NYC proposes to do if anything.

Myanmar is more Bangladesh's shame really.

Let's be frank here, I know people in New York City and the Caribbean, I don't know anyone from that part of India. Just on a human level, I'm inclined to pay more attention to what's going on with Sandy, plus the fact that I currently live in Massachusetts. It's shitty that the media in India is covering Sandy more than Nilam or the situation in Burma with the Rohingya (the first thing that springs to mind with sectarian violence in Burma/Myanmar, but you might be referring to something else, I'm not well versed on politics in south Asia), yes, but your original post just came off badly. Apologies for any misinterpretation on my part, English isn't my first language and things are a bit stressful on the eastern seaboard right now, even if it's not as bad as it is in other areas!
I'm reading up on Nilam now and you're right, it is much worse than Sandy, yes. However, this isn't the thread for it, unless this becomes a general "shitty things that have happened thread". If you were to start one (you seem to know more about it than me, that's for sure), I'd honestly like to learn more.

So Monday at aroudn 2 PM I lost power and I got it back Wednesday evening. Then last night at around 11 I got cable and internet back.
My area got hit pretty hard. Lot of destruction over here. While I live about 10 minutes away from the harbor, I'm lucky enough to not live there. Downport was completely flooded.
-
Hey, not having to pay for buses is cool. Gas shortages, however, are not…
-
Going to school lots of people coming there were like "I'm glad it's open because this place is more livable than my powered down house right now". There's still huge power outage here.
It turns out my house OWNS during emergencies like this because we're on the same grid as the town police station.
-
I can't drive anywhere because the gas stations near me either a) are out of gas, or b) have lines that stretch for a mile
-

I haven't noticed any gas problem here, it actually seems like there's more cars on the in-town roads than ever before.
i mean, im right across the water from you, wahts the deal with strong isle

were still an island with aparently only one open access point to the rest of civilization
the fact that the gas stations that actually have gas lack electricity really doesnt help

cant they send boats, or is the only port NYC
-
I think the only major port is NYC, yes
Though honestly it's less getting the gas on the island and more people draining the gas stations dry in under five hours

Fun fact: whenever our house happen to lose power we always go to my grandmother's house because it's on the same grid as the VP's house.
Also on a much more serious note over 100 people have died in the US because of Sandy (and it's likely to grow).

One of those Connecticut deaths was some idiot in the town next to me who went for a swim in the Sound during the middle of the storm.
The death toll should be adjusted for actual casualties, and people who stick things in their nose.

I know it's probably not much coming from someone who's not in the affected area, but the damage and destruction of so many homes and businesses and lives up there is absolutely devastating. I've been spending a lot of time glued to my phone the last few days texting my good friends up in NJ who lost power for a few days. They're right in the middle of central NJ and thankfully had little to no damage to their homes and property but so many of their friends and relatives lost everything. It's hard to watch so many people lose the people and places they have been so close to all of their lives. It really breaks my heart to hear what they're saying, and all of the pictures of the destruction >_< (( Also glad to hear from a lot of you guys that are up in that direction, I know there's quite a few. And there are still a few of my AP friends from up in that area I haven't heard from yet and hope to soon))
Hopefully down here we can get some care packages organized and going out(even if its just blankets and food, if that nor'easter hits the affected areas hard, power is going to go out and be even colder) >_< people are being asses about donating money.
-
@ monkeyking What area of CT you live in? cause im in middletown, and i feel like barely anything happened, tho shit was closed for two days..
I live in Stratford, I myself haven't felt much. But everyone else around me has pretty much lost power, and I mean like STILL. Our relatives in Trumbull might even be coming to chill at our house tomorrow because they don't have power or hot water.
I think I saw a statistic that said that Weston is like 90% out of power. A lot of the Fairfield county towns lost all their power. It's way worse than Irene, where I think only the little rich hill towns like Ridgefield went without power for this long. My parents work in Milford and Fairfield and haven't had to work all week. They even mentioned that Monday might be off too.
It's strange too. The roads are so busy. Like we have plenty of gas apparently unlike poor Long Island and Jersey. It's like a ton of bored restive people are just hopping in their cars to go somewhere since their houses are powerless and stuff.
Yeah check this out.

No wonder you haven't noticed anything you north central jerks!
I guess the New Haven and Bridgeport areas are some other power company though, where I'm at. I'll look for a map for us.
EDIT: here's a thing for us

-
The Ironic thing is gas is rather cheap up here, down to about 3.72, feel sorry for NYC/ Staten Island tho
-
feel sorry for NYC/ Staten Island tho
Tell me about it. It's been two days, and my mother still can't find gas for her car. :I
-
After 6 days without power, my family couldn't take it anymore and went to Philadelphia where my aunt lives. Luckily my mom had enough gas to make it here. You should see the few open gas stations in New Jersey. Some have 4 hour waits and the lines can go on for miles. Fun week all in all.
-
Oh boy, speaking of gas lines…..I was taking the bus yesterday, and I saw this massive line at least five blocks long. It's crazy.
-
So on top of 75% of my neighborhood not having power, trees still being ALL OVER, and just debris, nobody can get gas now. The only places that have it are the few Hess Stations and the lines for those stretch out onto the highways.
-
Nothing in Mastic should warrant a line that lasts two miles.
Forget Sandy, this logistics nightmare is the real danger.
-
I live in Sea Gate, and this is the first chance I've had to be on the internet at all. The flood rendered both of our cars unusable, and we still can't totally pump all the water out of the basement (which was totally submerged, destroying most everything and only missing the kitchen by a hair) because the groundwater is taking a while to recede. Still no electricity or hot water. Even after the electricity finally returns, we still won't have power because all the wiring needs to be redone. I've been spening all week toting up debris from the basement. My mom's store and the family restaurant are likewise ruined. In short, everything sucks a lot. On the other hand, my mom's cousin's house was by the water, his house is totally demolished.
I will say that we've been eating like kings, for hurricane victims, since we have to empty the fridge of its wares before it all goes bad, and we thankfully still have gas, and a generator to play Angry Birds and operate the pump.

Sorry to hear that, man :( up here in Toronto we just had a really bad storm and some trees uprooted. Be safe.
