On a more serious note wow did the senju disapear in one moment for another (the so call the rivals of the haxchihas) they simple vanish from the vilage at exception of tsunade who wasn't even on vilage. They vanish from vilage even before the uchiha massacre and everyone is okay?
My guess is that since the village most likely originally consisted of mostly Senju and Uchiha, the Senju mostly died out in battle during the first two wars. Add in with this other clans joining the village and Senju marrying into those clans and it might explain why there are so few.
Actually a theory I have right now is that Rin might be a Senju and that's the reason she was wanted: to replicate Senju DNA. Everyone seems to have it now so it seems like a good enough reason to get her.
Did anyone notice that Kubo butchered the timeline with this chapter?
We know Yamamoto founded both the Academy and the Gotei 2100 years ago. The original Gotei 13 died with the Quincies 1000 years ago, according to Bach. Yet we know that Unohana was a Captain even before Kyoraku and Ukitake, who were the first Captains produced by the Academy. So unless the Academy produced no Captains for over its first 1000 years since foundation (hard to believe, since almost all of the current Captains got to that rank in the past 100 years).
Another point, in the latest chapter we see Kyoraku as a kid looking at a drawing of Yamamoto's Bankai, which is obviously referred to his war against the Quincies since this is what this arc's all about (so it referring to something else makes no sense).
When were you under the impression that anything written by Kubo had to make sense?

Has Kubo even explained aging of the Shinigami? Why is Shrimpo still looking like a kid. Or why doesn't Byakuya look at least like a young teen? Kyoraku should probably be younger too.
There's just so many inconsistencies in pretty much every aspect of this series. Most of which we'll never get an answer for.

Nope.@Sonic:
This… What do you mean?
What exactly are you having trouble understanding?
We know that Yama founded the academy 2100 years ago, and we know that Kyoraku and Ukitake were both the first among the Shinigami since the academy's foundation to become Captains. Yet we see that less than 1000 years ago, kid Kyoraku looks at Yama's drawing of himself and they talk is referring to the war with the Quincies which took place 1000 years ago. So how could Kyoraku and Ukitate be the academy's first Captains if they didn't even join the academy less than 1000 years ago? Does Kubo really want us to believe that for the first 1000+ years since the academy's foundation, it didn't produce any Captains? (while all of the current Captains except for the Yama, Unohana, Kyoraku and Ukitake became Captains in the past 100 years, some of which became Captains only 50 years ago like Byakuya and Gin)
Well, long after anyone has stopped caring, but Daz finally got time on his hands, Its time to post my weekly ramblings regarding this atrocity.
Well well. And thus Yamamoto dies, and boy howdy do I not care in the slightest. The only pity I feel for Yama is due to him being shafted so thoroughly by the horrible writing. This isn’t a blaze of glory, this isn’t a death Yama can be proud of, that showed he gave his all. Its Yama getting a face full of pie and being laughed of the stage. Despite being captain fucking commander Yama makes the same idiotic mistake of all the other captains, and is forced by Kubo to forget his absurdly powerful shikai, his immense hand-to-hand combat strength and his kido arsenal, and just releases his bankais for the enemy to steal. But hey, Yamamoto had a really convincing, nearly baseless, totally wrong theory that it wouldn’t get stolen hurr durr!
In the end, Its just really fucking hard to appreciate Yamas contribution to the war effort when it amounts to killing 1 especially moronic mook onscreen, 3 mooks offscreen, and one pointless decoy mook. Hell, looking at Mohawk Renji, Yama even failed to toast the 3 quinzies in his pre-fight fodder-toasting hype moment! Kubo, these guys don’t have tits like Harribels posse, can’t you allow old Yama a little bit of competence? He can’t even have the dignity of killing fodder properly before he dies?
Of course, the meat and potatoes of this chapter is the flashback, and goodness me it’s a filling meal. First, let us consider the timeline as of this chapter.
2000 years ago: yamamoto founds the shinigami academy
2000-1000 years ago: Yamamoto and uhhh…his students from the academy? Roam soul society as a gang of vicious killers.
1000 years ago: Quinzy genocide!
200 years ago: the Quinzi genocide…again?
And really, thinking about this, what implications does this timeline have for life in soul society through the ages? I mean, in the pre-academy days, the entire afterlife system has had to be maintained by whatever souls discovered they had the ability to pull black clothing and giant swords out their ass, and somehow knew what to use them for. Considering soul society barely functions as is, this seems rather unfeasible. And then, between 2000 and 1000 years ago, the academy was there sure enough, but the guy in charge of it was somehow simultaneously a ruthless, merciless warlord, and the custodians of reality a pack of “bloodthirsty killers”. It’s hard to believe, but it seems Soul Society has been even worse than it currently is.
Of course, the real killer is the notion that Yamamoto has been mellow and compassionate this last millennium. Kubo…rushed and unjustified though it’d have been, you could almost have sold the notion that “Ichigos actions has prompted character development for Yama!” to me. But this is Byakuya all over again, Kubo is taking it too far, and rewriting history so that Yamamoto has ALWAYS been nice, deep down. Despite a million evidences to the contrary. This also demeans Ichigos impact on the “million years of rigidity” in SS somewhat, when it turns out Yama was mellow all along, and it had nothing to do with Ichigo.
And just…really? Yama declined the arm healing because he didn’t want to “use” Orihime- though her healing unholy undead soul eating monsters is A-OK? The kidous effect being unhealable would be transparently convenient, It being for the sake of pride would have been stupid, but they’d still have made a million times more sense than because its “morally reprehensible” lolwat. Yama, you could just have politely asked her for help. Maybe apologized for labeling her a traitor even.
As for Ichigo, ahahahahaha, NO Kubo. Hey, remember how Yamamoto didn’t want Ichigo to go to Hueco Mondo because he’d get boo-boos? No? That’s because it was since Ichigo needed to be ready for the friggin Aizen war! You even made him a substitute shinigami- a job which by its definition uses humans to deal with dangerous situations! Hell, they were even put under surveillance so they could get executed if they started harboring “dangerous thoughts”, and when Ginjou defected, the main plan was to create a new substitute, wait for Ginjou to approach him, and then kill them both. For fucks sense, the last part of the fullbring arc barely makes sense, but Hitsugaya basically said that Soul Societys plan for dealing with the situation was “Use Ichigo as bait, observe if he remains loyal to soul society when re-powered, let him mop up everything. I think, just maybe, this might fall under the label of “using a human”.
And then, gasmask Nazis.
Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh

Nazis.
When you need to make your villains just a tad more evil? Make ‘em Nazis. When you need to dehumanize your villains a tad? Give ‘em gasmasks. When you’re creatively bankrupt like nobodys fucking business? GASMASK NAZIS, for fucks sake.
And just where the hell did all these now apparently hundreds of Quinzis come from? Are they descendants of yet more previously unmentioned genocide survivors (making it consist of Ishidas family, Bachbeard, and bunch of other guys?) or has Bachbeard cultivated his own private little cult over the millennium? The fact that LloydRroyd was born as apparently “normal” kids and then subsequently drafted indicates the latter, and boy would I like to see that recruitment process. Because really, what exactly is the quinzi army itself gaining from this? Are they laying down their lives and destroying the universe only for the sake of avenging a thing that happened 1000 years ago, to people probably not related to them in any way?
Bach: Hi guys! Listen, a race of undead-monster killing ghost samurai exists. Want to help me get revenge on them for the sake of another race of undead-monster killers?
Rroyd: what did the samurai do to the other monster killers?
Bach: They killed them all! For absolutely no reason! Certainly nothing involving preventing the apocalypse!
Lloyd: How mean! This doesn’t seem at all fishy!
Rroyd: Suddenly, the quinzi cause is so important to me that I’m willing to invade heaven itself!

This has been more then worth the wait.
And you are absolutely right, the whole explanation of the arm makes zero sense givent he BIG SCHOKING UTTERLY GROUNDBREAKING REVEAL from the Ginjo fight.
Though I suppose someone could make the argument it was ordered by someone higher up, but consider this: we have never seen Yama actualy take orders and for all we know he was the highest ranking person with military authority in all of SS. And the courts purposefully avoid even seeing other people, even when they are judging them. And the even higher ups created a special dimension just so they don't have to actualy bother governing anything.
I think it's a safe bet that Yama called the shots around here.
Also I love how the 0 division, who so far seem to have even less duties then the regular shinigami, couldn't be arsed to try and stop the quincies before Seireitei was completely leveled. Or do they have one guy at the monitor up there and he's too busy playing solitaire to notice ?
Sure, why not? There could have been plenty of strong people around already, just not the 13 first chosen when the gotei 13 began. Or maybe those 13 in the flashback stayed captains until the end of the first conflict. As Bach stated he believe the shinigami became weak when they embraced the peace after the first conflict 1000 years ago. Which could imply all the old captains disbanded or something and only Unohana stayed with Yama (It's funny though how Unohana looks so young… But she's a healing expert so why not).
When the weaklings started to infest the gotei 1000 years ago they started to get replaced all the time.
Let me just try and demonstrate the life and duties of a shinigami.
Step 1. Die/Born into SS. Nothing.
Step 2. Join academy, pass tests.
Step 3. Become shinigami, rest an average 0.05 people per year.
Step 4. Promoted to seated position. Rest an average 0.025 people per year. Maybe fight a couple of hollows.
Step 5. Become a captain. Never rest anyone. Maybe fight a hollow or two.
Step 6. Get promoted to Squad 0, a place for people who think all of the above is back breaking and unbearable labour. Spend rest ot eternity never showing up and never doing anything.
Thank you once again for an awesome spiel Daz, and for pointing out things I hadn't even though of.
Love your post Daz.

Hell, the unseated officers seems to be weakasses who can't even deal with a simple Hollow by themselves (look at Rukia from the first chapter, it should tell us Kubo's idea of the average Shinigami's level, since he obviously didn't think of her as VC level since… well, the concept of VC didn't even exist in his mind back then). There're 200 Shinigami per division, so around 2600 men in total. Those 2600 don't seem to be doing much for years since even Karakura is barely being attacked by Hollows to provide enough action for even 100 Shinigami out of those 2600 (especially since Ichigo and Rukia took care of the attacks). The Captains are doing nothing as well like you said.

And then somewhere someone said "This is too much for any decent person to handle" and we have magic pocket dimension BS.
The key to which recquired the LEVELING OF AN ENTIERE CITY IN THE HUMAN WORLD to make.
You know, Kubo should've made Yama's change of heart a bit more believable.
Like, make him take a hit to save a kitty that was passing by.
So I wonder, did they make the key before or after Yamamoto stopped doing double duty as warlord and academic ? Because the whole moral flip-flopping of SS is realy remarkable.
In the begining, it was reffered to as paradise. Then we find out it's ruled by a dictatorship. Then we find out they wiped out entiere cities. Then we find out they were supposed to keep a balance. Then we find out that balance consists of extrajudicialy slaughtering thousands of people from the slums with no actual crime being commited. Then we find out they perpretrated at least two acts of genocide. Then we find out they're supposed to have been good guys these past thousand years. Genocide and recent mass slaughter of 20 000 of their own citizens that was met with barely a raised eyebrow as consequence notwithstanding. AND then there's the Gotei 13's retirement policy of "Once you stop being able to serve us after centuries of faithfull service we will lock you up without trial for the entiere rest of your millenia spanning lifetime in a secret prison because you could one day turn on us". But still, good guys , at least for the last 1000 years !

It was passed on to him from the previous tyrannical warlords.
It was passed on to him from the previous tyrannical warlords.
Which wouldn't even make sense because if the Gotei 13 wasn't there before Yamamoto, it means it must have been made later. I just want to know if it was before or after SS is supposed to have "gone soft".
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Because from what we gather the soul king is the ruler of SS, but there was no SS before the shinigami were around right ?

Well, the SS did exist since… well, who the fuck knows. Yamamoto only founded the Gotei as it is today, as well as the academy. So I guess they simply weren't organized at all back then...
Imagine all of current SS's incompetence, only done by tribes of Shinigami running around and fighting each other (probably)... and more bloodthirsty, of course, since now they're as soft as cotton cady or whatever.

LOL at the gasmask Nazi tirade, this whole post needs to be an article on the blog, Daz
As I've said before, the nonsensical WTFery of this whole Quinzi culture fascinates me. Where the hell did all of these people come from? Why are they all evil? Whence came their powers? How did they get stronger than SS captains? Why are they intent on destroying SS / the cosmos, with no discernible gain on their part? Why are they following this loser? How does Casa Ishida gel with any of this?

However those groups were probably at least somewhat organised and on a somewhat higher level of society then sickness filled slums of death taking up pretty much 99 % of Soul Society.
So I think this would have been actualy a far better time to be stuck in SS I think.

Kubo will be happy to supply you with all the explanations you need at this point, heck he'll give you a couple to spare.
Wait I just realized that the guy who I thought was Ikkaku at first was actually the mohawk SSpada that got fried by Yama. What did he survive…?
The Quincies are MEANIES because Yamamoto shed a single sexy tear when he was slaughtering those innocents
YAMAMOTO IS GOOD WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT
So Daz pretty much said everything I'd love to scream about.
But there's one other thing: Do Quincies age the same as humans? I mean, this new guy says that he knew Yamamoto from years ago. But this makes little sense if Quincies age the same as humans. Sorry if there's an explanation for this somewhere in Bleach, but I couldn't be bothered to read this manga again.

Step 5. Become a captain. Never rest anyone. Maybe fight a hollow or two.
Step 6. Get promoted to Squad 0, a place for people who think all of the above is back breaking and unbearable labour. Spend rest ot eternity never showing up and never doing anything.
What do you mean by rest people?
Here's a question
If people reincarnate, what's the point of having an afterlife
^
Same reason why orange pajamas work as camouflage for a ninja in a forest village.
Gasmask nazis or gasmask fauns…
I wonder if Kubo also forgot the "ukitake" reveal, being evil and for whatever case..
Must have.
Hashirama's cells cure blindness.
Hashirama's cells helps you grow your WOOD.What can't it do?
The sight of Rin getting pierced by Kakashi made Obito's wood grow bigger…

The thing shinigami are supposed to do that would totaly prevent any Hollows even existing and would take roughly a minute, yet they never do. The thing that's technicaly their job and main responsibility. That I've not see any of them do once in this whole series.

I don't want to give Kubo too much credit but this is sort of the same as what's covered by my very misty understanding of Buddhism.
Of course Kubo messes it up by having a uniform not-so-great paradise for everyone who was not "bad", and then eternal damnation for the rest. With reincarnation in the middle.
So realy, typical Kubo.
Also, anyone else feel Kubo just completely forgot the whole "guiding souls to the afterlife" aspect of the Shinigami by this point ? Because again, why would a group of people like this need something like an assasin division, when they are the only existing organised form of being in the afterlife and always have been ? Especialy considering Quincies weren't always enemies and they were a non issue for the last millenium ?

Must have.
It's a typical case of Shroedinger's Kubo, where a semi important seeming and rather interesting plot point is
A. Forgotten about to be replaced by a completely different plot point as if the former never existed
B. Remembered to be used for an even stupider retcon down the line
simultaneously.
The sight of Rin getting pierced by Kakashi made Obito's wood grow bigger…
So that explains uooo type of scream it wasn't a pain of scream it was a horny scream and also explains why the Pain rods where on the boobs of the female jinchuriki it was his fetish.
Thanks to Kakashi Obito discover his fetish and the reason he didin't kill Kakashi right on the spot.
Late yet again, but that was an excellent post, Daz.
And I'm lovin' the new thread title.

In a word, yes. Kubo has forgotten so many aspects he set up with the early volumes showcasing the life of a Shinigami. Remember the gates of Hell?
And the assassin division would be useful to eliminate SS threats on the downlow….if you know, they didn't need to rely on Ichigo to solve everything.

Remove Aizen and it will be perfect.
I actually now want to see what would be like if Aizen entered that fight, and Tsukishima for laughs too.
Illusions+shapeshifting twins+change the past=???
aizen is always present

I… I... love it.
Bach: "Then who was-?"
Momo's corpse is on the ground
The "Substitute Yourself" Momo
"The first ones who stabbed Momo were the doctor and nurse that picked her up"
Momo's red blood cells are literally microscopic katanas
Momo's sonogram
"She must be a boy, what's that protrusion sticking out of her?"
"Nothing to be worry yourself over, Momo mom, that is just an ordinary sword."
"Ohh, okay."
There's an entire branch of medicine/swordplay dedicated to Momo and her unfortunate accidents
We should STAB probably stop STAB stabbing her you STAB guys
Is it weird this discussion is making me feel a tiny bit sad ?
Everybody used to greet Momo with a friendly dagger to the spine but Yamamoto is good because he deigned to give Momo the undeserved honor of twisting the dagger each time
Momo has more holes in her than the plot.
So, about bleach..Bach > Aizen ? (I would say, Bach is more confortable as a vilain, Ainzen is just a spoiled brat with a machine gun).
[hide]I´m not going to say anything about Yama´s death, Kubo discards character to make hype, and he´s not afraid to discard ANYONE to give hype to Ichigo)[/hide]
And Naruto ? Who don´t like senseless violence ? Now, can anyone explain the last sentence ? The where "I´am ? I know, I´m in hell" Is something about the "moon plan" ? Is this a poetic excuse to the change of heart of Obito ?
