He just wanted the right to end his own manga whenever he felt was appropriate for the story, he never had a different series that he hated in mind.

Wasn't Crow more like One Piece though? At the end of Crow, Eiji said something about a prison and a big war (Impel Down and Marineford).
They never said anything about it selling 200,000,0000 copies or anything, and it only ran for 8 years, while OP is the eternal record breaker and is going to run for 20 or 30. In pure scale its closer to Dragonball, but like I said, on second though it might be closer to Naruto level. Dragonball was just the first longrunning big hit with universal appeal that symbolizes Jump that came to mind.
The specific title its a proxy for doesn't really matter so much as the type of series its standing for.
