Okay, who just felt the 5.8 eathquake that originated in Virginia? I felt it all the way up here in Boston.
5.9 Earthquake!!!!!
-
-
I'm right outside of Boston, and…I didn't notice a thing.
I feel like I missed out.
-
Were there any casualites ?

I'm IN Boston right now and we felt it. What the heck?
-
Psh, silly non Californians where an earthquake isn't normal.
j/k, hope everything is ok.
-
It wasn't anything more than a light swaying up here. Virginia is what I'm worried about.
Any Virginians here?

Yeah, I don't get out of bed unless it' 6.0 or above.
Talked with a friend who currently goes to Virginia Tech and he told me he saw some buildings sway bot nothing happened where he was.

Raises hand
I honestly thought it was just some construction in my neighborhood. But then, I heard some car alarms go off and my windows rattle. After I went outside, my neighbors were asking if I felt it, too.
-
I felt it in southwest CT.
-
I live in Virginia and I felt it about half an hour ago. Wasn't even sure what it was at first, I thought it might be just be construction work or something, but it kinda clicked in my head; EARTHQUAKE!!! After that I just ran to my bedroom door and just stood there. I'd say it only last about 45 seconds, but still pretty freaky.
No real damage as far as I can tell though. It just knocked over a glass candle I had in my room, which shattered, but other than that, nothing.
Oh, and CNN's calling it a 5.9 earthquake now.

Northern New Jersey. Experienced earthquakes before when visiting San Francisco, but never thought I'd feel one over here on the east coast.
My mom and I are upstairs, but only she felt it, and my sis and her friend were in the basement, but only my sister felt it. Similar results from all my friends.
So what's the appropriate grace period before we can start looting?
-
Im in Northern Virginia. Scared the crap out of me. Cellphone service is down right now but everyone I know is ok. I heard Toronto felt it.
-
Felt it in my room. Figured it was either an earthquake or my house starting to fall apart.
Thankfully I'm OK.

Considering you're in New Jersey is there really a grace period?
j/k

Shorely you jest!
(I hate MTV)
-
What the fuck. I was in the doctor's office in NJ taking a physical and while she was taking my height the whole building started to shake.
-
Just so I know, since my geography of the US isn't all that hot, how big of an area did this quake affect?
-
People felt it in Mississauga (toronto, Canada) but me also being in Mississauga, didn't feel a thing. Yup I really do feel left out. Although, I should be thankful, but this is the second one in like a year that I didnt feel but the rest of the city did.
Anyho! Hope everyones okay and damage/injuries are min to none.

we had another one?

I live on Long Island and felt it. For some reason only me and my Dad felt it. I was listening to music and felt my chair wobbling, then I heard my closet door creaking and went outside and my Dad's like "Yup, an earthquake".
-
Psh, silly non Californians where an earthquake isn't normal.

Yeah seriously right? Im Originally from Los Angeles and now Ive been Living in Tokyo for the past four years. . . .
f*ck me. . .
Theres been an earthquake above 5.0 like three days in a row. . .
-
Whoa, all the way in Maryland. Scared me right out of the shower.
-
I live in Northern CT and didn't feel a thing. I saw on CNN that the was felt as far away as Atlanta and Detroit.
A nuclear power plant located near the epicenter of the quake was shut down.
-
we had another one?
Yea. Probably like under a year ago. It was all the rave, how did you miss out :P. But it doesn't matter, I didn't feel both. Just found out that my dad felt it while on the road in 'Sauga. And my cuz in NYC felt it too. My mom was downstairs on the main floor, but she didn't feel a thing. But when I told her about it she remembered noticing one of our blinds fall randomly (and we put two and two together)
-
This… kind of creeps me out.
This may sound really stupid to anybody but me, but I was going to take a shower and decided to put my drink back in the fridge. There was no where to put it where it was extra stable. I thought for a second "Eh, it won't matter", but then I thought "What if there is an earthquake? I better tighten the lid". Now, I don't live anywhere near where this earthquake struck, but we so rarely have measurable earthquakes where I live that it was kind of silly of me to be worried about that in the beginning.
I get out of the shower and there was an earthquake. Not here, but that doesn't matter. Still kind of creepy in its own way. lol

Are the buildings earthquake safe there out on the east coast? Im remembering the new zealand quake, it was like only 6.3 yet buildings were collapsing like they were made out of paper
-
i felt it in NJ, for only a few seconds. my whole neighborhood felt it.
-
I'm in Queens, NY and I felt it. It only lasted like 5 seconds. Thought I was shaking and not the ground, but then I realized that other people shook too. I know a few buildings in Manhattan were evacuated and the news is just regurgitating the same thing over and over, "5.9 Earthquake in Virginia. We felt it! Here's a picture of the White House!" I hope everyone in VA is alright, though. They got it the worst.
-
They actually made us leave the office for a bit when it first happened lol… I laughed really hard because it was like maybe 30seconds to a minute of shaking and everyone freaked out. I thought it was someone shaking my cubicle wall tbh. Either way they said there might be another one because the plate might move further or something along those lines.
Oh and I am in Jersey. :D

I know buildings here in New York are not Eartquake-Safe. I assume it's the same for the rest of the East Coast where earthquakes are relatively uncommon. So, no.
-
Checking in from Annapolis, we seemed to have survived.

There might be some aftershocks over the next few hours.

People are saying that the Washington Monument is tilting.

Lot of NJ APers, huh?

People are saying that the Washington Monument is tilting.
that's a lie. the monument is fine. We felt it here in Philadelphia but no real harm. Just a lot of ppl going wtf. ofc FB exploded with statuses too
-
I hope everyone is okay!
But really, it shouldn´t have been too powerfull to the point of destroying a building or anything like that. Im from Chile and here an 5.9 is not even considered an earthquake, is more like a walk in the park. -

Meanwhile, on the Golden Coast

Cuddles: The earth is belching again.
Goes back to work
(We still gotta' get ready for 'The Big One' though. Good thing we're always prepared for that kind of shit in the first place). -
I hope everyone is well. Things like this makes me glad I live in Minnesota where shit doesn't happen. Beyond the I-35W bridge collapse some years back. No natural disaster though, except maybe some flooding in other parts of the state.
-
People are saying that the Washington Monument is tilting.
Erectile dysfunction? (sorry, I had to)
Anyway, no aftershocks here in Virginia as far as I can tell. And yeah, I'm sure all you Californians and Chileans and whoever else are thinking "ah, get over it you big babies." Eh, what can I say? It's just not something we're used to. But yeah, it's not really a big deal at all.

-

Same, especially after that 7.2 hit us yet it seemed like nobody cared about it.
I remember thinking that one would've been a measly 4 or even 3, but holy shit was I in for a surprise.
-
I was in Virginia working when it happened. I was working at a YMCA and the whole building were evacuated. Kids in the swimming pool led straight outside in their swimming suits, people working out in the gym, and workers behind the desks, everybody. I was playing DDR in the game room and at first I thought someone was bouncing a basketball through the vents above my head. A second later I thought, "Is this an earthquake!?" Then I just wandered outside where I felt it'd be safe.
First earthquake experience. More confusing than scary but it only lasted for a few seconds and it didn't do any damage from what I can tell. Haven't seen the news yet. Hope everybody's alright.
-
As a native Californian I have one thing to say to Virginians on this board…...
PUSSIES.
Just kidding. But I'm not seeing the whole big deal with this, no one as far as I'm concerned has died from this quake, let alone been severely hurt by it.
And no damage has been done severe enough that a few days won't fix. Hoping everyone is alright, and that's all I'll say.
-
Hm, I still feel like I missed out on the earthquake..
-
I'm a Californian, transplanted, and I've lived in Tokyo, and have been through a quake or several in both places, many of which were larger. The thing is, in those places the buildings are more or less built to codes that are meant to help them withstand the swaying. The East coast has no such building codes that I know of. A considerably smaller quake here could do a lot more damage than it would in Tokyo or California. Just something to keep in mind for anyone saying the authorities may have overreacted.
-
Everyone needs to realize that the east coast isn't used to earthquakes and most of our buildings are not earthquake "safe" or whatever the terminology is. So what is normal (or even considered weak) over in Cali is an entirely different situation out here.
Not to mention people like to make a big deal out of stuff like this… I laughed it off, but will have to replace the top part of my fireplace because it came out of the wall and shattered... Who knew marble would shatter that easily!

ah this reminds me of when e1n, from solcal stated he would rather face a forest fire than a blizzard. :3 lol feel free to laugh away. at the east coast. I snickered at e1n. it's neat seeing how differently different places and people react to things they are not accustomed to. It's a bit more of a deal for us, cause most of us have never witnessed an earthquake before. :3
If you ever come up here in Winter I'll take ya sledding. :3 if you can brave the cold.
-
I get to have earthquakes and insane heat. Yay for me..
Live real close to one of the hottest cities in the world, probably hottest city in Mexico, with record temperatures of 122°F, but it's basically the same place.. that and coupled with earthquakes, what a great ass place to live, huh?
