Anyone else find it weird that Luffy is so adverse to being a hero? I suppose it's true that he's only ever previously acted upon things that have only directly affected him or his crewmates, but I still think it's weirdly out of character that Luffy would be so against helping people. I suppose you could say that he wasn't against helping people as much as he was "getting recognition as a hero", but that entire prospect is still bizarre and I'm not really sure why the exchange even exists.
Chapter 634: "100.000 vs. 10" - Discussion
-
-
Luffy just has this idea of what a pirate is and just wants to be that. I don't think it is out of character at all. Everything he's ever done has been pretty selfish. Zoro fit's that bill as well. Sanji, Usopp, Chopper, etc tend to want to save people at times because it is the right thing to do.
Can't wait for Robin's FI history lesson to unfold even more. Sounds like she has more unfinished business with discovering what there is on this island.
-
Wasn't there a scene at Saboady where Luffy flipped his shit at a Tenryubito shooting some guy unjustly or something?
-
Well he hates A-holes too.
-
No he only helps on whims and won't help if it's got nothing to do with him. He walked right past the guy who looked like usopp and the girl and didn't even pay them mind. Im sure he saw two people on the ground bleeding along with all the people looking at them. If he didn't care about all the pirates being arrested by marines when sentomaru came what makes you think he would care about civillians. Though he is hugely againts being a hero. It's not like he's the only pirate to inadvertently help someone because of their own interest. Look at Law, Kuma, Buggy, Mihawk. If you want a real hero look at Fisher, Usopp,Nami,Smoker. All the people who had nothing to gain and everything to lose. The thruth is none of them we're strong enough. Being a hero is about sacrifising your self for others.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Zoro will save a person at any given time. If your looking for someone as cruel/selfish as Luffy look at Sanji. He the only guy that will beat you to a pulp for the dumbest of reason's. As A chef I understand though.
-
I'm so excited about that "Important history about the World Government lies within this country!" line with Robin.
I swear if we learn even just a little bit about Pluton/Poseidon I'm going to combust from the awesome, but it'll probably be about fishman/human history within the WG or something.
And I just noticed this, but Nami and Shirahoshi are waving to each other in the color spread. I know, I'm slow, but I still found it kinda neat. (it took me a while to notice because there are certain… distractions on that color spread). Their chemistry is just like Nami and Vivi's.
-
Well he hates A-holes too.
To me he only has one cannon morale. he was disgusted by someone who calls them self a pirate but doesn't like the things pirates like. Fame, money, power. If these things are to much for you than your not a real pirate.
-
@S.C.:
To be fair, those defeated were literally nameless fodder. Not much different then the nameless Marines at Enies' Lobby or Marineford. Just as powerful as fanged bunnies.
I'm mainly thinking about Hodi. It's pretty obvious the only way Oda is gonna make him a match for Luffy is by making him pop more pills and after some courageous act by Shirahoshi or Luffy (something that'll really offend Hodi's ideals) his rage and the pills will make him go overboard and Luffy will win like he has before in similar fashion.
-
@Don:
Color of Observation(CoO) actually makes you aware of everyone surrounding you, but that definitely isn
t what Rayleigh meaned with Roger
s ability "to hear the voice of all things".
CoO or mantra as we were first introduced to, is just able to detect living beings, while Rogers ability seems to spot even more than that.
On Sky Island he was able to read and write in the ancient language, even when he actually never studied them.
So Rogers ability was to understand what "things" mean or have hidden inside them, what i would translate in an ability which makes him able to see into the past of an object.I believe it said he could hear the 'breath' of the rocks and DazB's Steel.. Sounds a lot more like whatever roger had going on than CoO
-
I personally think Oda won't give anyone else haki.
All of the SH are different (with the exception of Zoro and Brook but thats being fixed…). I can't see haki being the only way of hitting a logia. Its too unOdalike. If it turns out to be...
Than Oda will probably have different SH be a master at different haki. Luffy will probably be great at all 3 types. 3 other SH might be masters at different haki

This. I think this is why it could mean that Zoro can also have CoC. He has it like Luffy, to be on the epic tier he is destined to acquire. (greatest swordsman isn't just some title) But unlike the future Pirate King he's not as proficient.
Now what I'm really interested in is what different types of haki all the crewmembers get. I mean to be a contender for Pirate King I think the Strawhats would need about everyone to have Haki in one form of another. Except perhaps some of the weakest members.
In conjunction with their perspective training grounds I believe this is what they'll excell at.
Luffy: Excels at CoC, also has nice CoO and CoA capabilities.
Zoro: Has CoC, uses CoO predominantly. Not sure about CoA
Sanji: Doesn't have CoC, uses CoA predominantly and excells at it. CoO capabilities.
Franky: Not sure if he has any, if he does it'll be CoA.
Usopp: Same as franky, but if he does, I think it'll be CoO
Nami: She doesn't need it, so I don't think so.
Chopper: Don't think he has either, but if he does CoA I think.
Brook: Don't think he has it, but perhaps CoO.
Robin: I see her being able to use CoA. It'd really boost her fruit powers. What do u guys think?
-
Only problem with that is how do you "excel" at CotC? As Rayleigh said it can not be trained in any way. It can only be brought under control, then it will grow with personal experience. In other words the stronger you get the stronger your CotC gets. With the other two shades it's easy to imagine. Someone who is a CoA natural has strong and thick armor, may be able to use it over larger areas easier etc. while a CoO natural will be able to read the opponent's moves more accurately and / or further in advance. But CotC so far doesn't really have techniques as it's just your spirit manifested.
So long story short, I don't necessarily disagree with the Luffy = CotC, Zoro = CoO and Sanji = CoA concept but rather how is it going to work out in practice? Maybe it's more likely that Luffy will be more balanced, having a worse CoO than Zoro and worse CoA than Sanji but better in reverse, plus his CotC which is the strongest. Ray did say that MOST people tend to lean toward one or the other IIRC, not necessarily all.
As for the others, I dunno if anyone else has it currently. But I'd like to think Usopp will get both to be honest as we've seen what CoA can do to projectiles, a huge power boost, and without CoO stronger enemies could aim dodge him too easily. Chopper should have CoA as he is a physical fighter. The others can go without to be completely honest though that's not to say they will.
-
Zoro will have COA no doubt to me thats a no brainer especially as most people believe he will eventually cut diamond cant imagine him doing it without that.
-
Well I actually meant CotC for Zoro in a way that because his spirit is less strong than Luffy he'll won't be able to knock out 50.000, but maybe half. In that way it isn't something you actively train, but like said rather born with a capacity. Likewise their goals are different; Luffy wants to be Pirate King and Zoro Swordsman king. That doesn't necessiraly mean that Zoro would have a lesser capability per se, but due to the fact that in One Piece Pirate King is the highest attainable rank of infamy. It is logical that it caps with their respective goals. (Just like Gol D. Roger and Rayleigh)
Anyhow, I figured that since Sanji was mostly runnign and fighting Okama and since he is brawler type he'd have to armor his body to stand a chance, even his FLambé attacks hinted to it. With Zoro CoO comes naturally due to hearing the breath of things. Of course when wielding a sword he's probably infusing it with CoA to attest to stronger attacks and slice up more shit.
I forgot about the ranged projectiles infusement works too, and I'd LOVE to see Usopp have BOTH CoA and CoO. I find it hard to imagine his shooting strength tho, since he mostly uses special shots like the pop greens. Not sure where his fighting style ends up tho. (if it stays like the good old 10.000 diff specialized utility attacks, or he also has insanely powerful hitting shots. I mean he has never really hurt some insanely high tier person in most arcs.)
I believe if Chopper wants to keep up his fighting I'd like to see him get CoA, though his different forms solve that partly.
Franky, Robin, Nami and Brook don't need it really for their fighting style. They have very niche capabilities that are extremely good in group battles. Except for Robin and Franky who can dish out some shit 1on1 prty well.
So many possibilities, so little information… xD
-
-
I also found Luffy's hero reasoning a little weird and out of the blue, but I really don't mind, now that I look back at earlier chapters. It makes him unique and as long as he doesn't hurt people for no good reason, I don't care that he doesn't help people without a (what he considers) good reason either.
Luffy just has this idea of what a pirate is and just wants to be that. I don't think it is out of character at all. Everything he's ever done has been pretty selfish. Zoro fit's that bill as well. Sanji, Usopp, Chopper, etc tend to want to save people at times because it is the right thing to do.

http://www.mangareader.net/103-2606-16/one-piece/chapter-499.html
on that page, you can see that Zoro helped that guy selflessly.
-
This is how Luffy has been all along. To quote myself circa 2009 on the subject.
Luffy really isnt the kind of guy who gives a crap about the world as a whole.
He'd probably sooner be of to save a fish that be befriended than the world as we know it.
-
Luffy makes up reasons to help people but just dosent wanna be seen as a hero just like how he helped nico robin.
luffy is a nice guy just a bit selfish. -
When Luffy said he wants all the meat for himself and Jinbe bribed him with meat in order to be the "hero" of Fishman Island, for some reason it reminded me of Big Mam agreeing to protect Fishman Island as long as they give her a lot of candy per month. IF Luffy were to ever claim islands as his own as the Yonkou have been doing (which I doubt Luffy will), I can see those islands having to give Luffy a lot of meat as compensation.
-

So Koshiro and most of the rly good swordfighter should also have that ability, that made Roger so special.?
I see from where you`re coming and i think it definitely can be related to each other.
Getting aware of the breathing of things like they were beings, sounds rly close to it.
But this scene always had the vibe to me as "something important especially for a swordman"….,thought. -

For all we know, he was a swordsman, and he just discovered how to take this ability to hear the breathe of all things to a new level.
-
I also thought it a bit out of character for Luffy to say the things he did (about not wanting to be a hero e.t.c) at first, but then, I gave it some thought and realized that this is how he's always been. The difference is that he's never said it outright, it has just been reflected in his actions.
I like the fact that he didn't KO all of the 100,000 enemies with his CoTC, it leaves room for improvement, and we can use it in the future for comparison (if he ever gets put in a situation where he has to CotC more than 50,000 fodder again) to see how much he's grown.
Finally some confirmation regarding haki on the other mugiwaras. Robins reaction leads me to believe that she is familiar with haki, but hasn't learned it yet. Zoro/Sanji obviously know haki by now, anything else would be ridiculous, even if it wasn't more or less 'confirmed' by them commenting on Luffys CotC. Why? Consider this: It took Luffy 1 ½ years training with RAYLEIGH to learn all 3 forms of haki. If Zoro/Sanji hadn't learned haki by now, when exactly would they learn it before Luffy becomes Pirate King? Another timeskip? Because I doubt that they can learn it faster than Luffy did. This argument also leads me to believe that the SHs who aren't already familiar with haki/learned it to some extent, won't learn haki until Luffy is pirate king, as it would be really bad if any of them learned haki at a faster rate than Luffy, who had already shown disposition for it before he even learned it consciously. In other words, I'm hoping as many of the SHs as possible have learned haki by now, or are in the process of learning it. It seems like most top-tier fighters know haki, and if the captain of a crew of 10 people is ever to become Pirate King, it would be weird if only 3 of his crewmembers knew haki.
As for VDD's boat coming toward the island, I think it will be an 'Oda-moment', in other words nothing we can predict. However I liked the theory of Yowahoshi swimming out to touch the boat (and therefore stopping it), but again, I think it's impossible to predict how that will end.
-
Hody must really be worried about the power Shirahoshi has because it seems killing her is one of his priorities
-

I'd be pretty damn scared of someone who could have these appear at any time!

when will we get to see big mam?

Where did you get the idea that his spirit is less strong? From what I have seen Luffy is a step ahead of Zorro and Sanji simply because of his DF powers. Without them he is at about the same level. Besides Zorro doesn't need Haki to take out 50.000 people. Chances are by now he can do a huge slash like Mihawk at the Whitebeard war. That seems enough to slaughter 50k people
Franky, Robin, Nami and Brook don't need it really for their fighting style. They have very niche capabilities that are extremely good in group battles. Except for Robin and Franky who can dish out some shit 1on1 prty well.

Actually Robin needs the Mantra type of Haki because defense has alays been her weakest point. If she had Mantra she could have taken out Moria
But not too get too out of topic I wonder if how the battle will proceed in the next chapter. I am guessing Sunny would probably take out the rest of the 50 000 pirates(or they would just run away) but it would also be interesting if we get to see the SH doing some massive aread damage attack to take out the rest and then proceed to the sub bosses
I am just wonder who will take care of her Vander Decken. It will be kinda boring if Luffy takes out both Hody and him. I am hoping it's Jimbei. The guy also deserves a piece of the action
-

I Hope it's the other way 'round. VDD seems to be much more formidable (because of his DF power) than Hodi (the annoying pill junky) and also it seems more fitting for Jimbe to be the one who cleans up a mess in his own backyard, plus I just think the fight between Luffy and VDD wold be more entertaining in the typical Oda wacky fight way.

Well I just don't really see another good target for Jimbei. Hody's underlings would just not fit. And I am not too sure about Luffy against VDD. I mean his DF powers while interesting can be overwhelmed by brute strength and Luffy has more then enough strength
-
Awesome chap. Going to be a long two week wait for the next piece of Oda awesomeness.
I've been wondering to myself if Luffy's state of mind could change the strength/amount of opponents knocked out by his Haki. If he was extremely angry or desperate I'm thinking he could have knocked out more than the 50,000. Besides being slightly digested by Megalo, Luffy is still pretty laid back overall. Back in Marineford, Luffy was under a lot of duress and knocked out a good chunk of Marines and the executioners (wasn't Mr. 3 one of those knocked out?). Albeit Luffy could still not be in full control of it, which would lead to a variable result anyways -_-

That might be possible but Luffy tends to get from being laid back to being super serious extremely quickly. I think this was the case when he came out of Megalo and hit Hody with G2. (was he in full body G2?)
-
The next week we have a chapter??
-
No.
16 characters.

This post is deleted!

Finally Internet again! Anyways, loved the chapter, and Jinbe seems pretty much confirmed with the chapter title - although I'm sure people will say something because of the colour spread :D
And Sanji understanding the concept of haki makes it pretty clear him and Zoro have some control of it, too, just not Kingbition - which is good, I think. Would be a bit extreme otherwise. I love how Luffy just overpowers everyone in a way, it looks like the others need to hurry if they want to join the fight.. Well I'm
Sure all this has been said already, sorry for that.I'm also growing more and more fond of my avatar, Hody's design is pretty neat.

nice chapter, now let's wait for Big Mom to show up i don't think the Arc will end by defeating Hody ..

I bet a hundred belis on that.

Does anyone here other than me think Hody is ridiculously weak?

Luffy is preposterously strong.
-
Plain Hody is kinda weak for this level.
Super doped up Hody seems to be average for a new world pirate maybe.
That's atleast the impression he's giving me.

Honestly I feel that Caribou is going to be used mainly for a Kidnapping. If he actually Kidnaps Shirahoshi while everyone is celebrating and manages to sell her on sabaody, I can see a huge upping in the chances for a Reverie/World Government Arc. You know where the rest leads. Thats why i feel Hodi is just the villain needed to up the scale of an arc, like franky with Water Seven.
I know how far-fetched this sounds, only because Camie was kidnapped 2 years ago, so it would be a rehash of plot elements. But, if done in a masterful way as always, im sure oda can pull something like this off. After all, every arc basically has its rescuing moments.
I just don't want to see such an anticipated arc end so quickly, but thats just me. I however wouldn't mind if Jinbe actually joins.

Well, it wouldn't suck to see another mermaid being captured. It's well known that mermaids are very expensive on the market of slave trade.

Uh I don't want Fishman Island to turn into a saga. :/
I would rather it be the first major arc in the last saga, New World. :O

True, but I'd rather not finish an arc I have been waiting for since I joined this forum to finish in less than one years time.

Yeah, Franky with hair!

I'm guessing Mecha Sunny will be the one to take down Noah!

Swampy guy will suck in Noah. That's for sure.

(am I the first one to say it?)I don't know if you are, but I've been thinking the same thing.
And does Sunny have enough firepower ?
Considering the power of the Gaon Cannon (Franky's pre timeskip weapon for it), I'd sure hope so.
-

I'll join this bandwagon, seems like a great way to show Sunny's new awesomeness.

I feel like Luffy will somehow deal with Noah himself. This will lead to him deciding VDD is the real threat and make way for the much more logical Jinbe vs Hodi and Luffy vs VDD.
