Not just Chu. Kuroobi is next to him with an afro, and there's also the Macro fishman pirates in there as well. The only guy I don't recognize is the guy right behind Fisher Tiger.

Really? I got the opposite impression from him. His was the first fishman/merman design I actually liked since Jimbee, and there were tons of characters introduced after him.

Great chapter that marks the beginning of the most anticipated flashback ever. So the chapter…
Gaimon finally appears, with an adorable Sarfunkel in tow! Ahaha, oh Oda, I should expect a pun of this nature from someone who titles a chapter "The Times They Are A-Changin" but... they're both men... oh well.
The guards have bubble producing pez dispensers! That's awesome. That explains a lot (and it's conveniently useless technology after fishman island again too).
Supporting cast character development! Quick and efficient like always, too.
Damn Icaros is huge. I suppose he is a giant squid, but wow.
Poor Daruma gets no respect. All the residents are begging to some fodder guy instead.
Neo appears behind people out of nowhere. Neat trick.
Dosun gets the shaft, poor hammerhead. I only see one prince, though. I guess they're splitting up to cover more area. ES might be enough for Dosun to beat Fukaboshi, supposedly the strongest in the entire empire? My heart says "please no!" but my brain says "yes, eventually enough of them will give him the upper hand."
Forcing people to step on their idolized deceased queen's picture, go homeless, or die. This is a pretty twisted scheme, so I want to know who the mastermind really is.
Poor Caribou, your greed will lead you to your fate.
Luffy drinking Nami's tea... hahaha, oh man... and then the "now that you mention it, Yosaku's probably doing pretty well!" ... so good.
Now that you mention it Oda, Sanji was the only other person who heard that, wasn't he. It makes sense that he'd be here.
Sanji can be pretty scary when he's not dying from a nosebleed. It's about time.
The page summing up Nami's history after Hachi's line... I teared up a bit. Well orchestrated efficiency again, and I love Nami's character when she's being level headed.
Arlong Park was supposed to be like Sabaody Park? Wow, even the crazies at Sabaody kept that stuff out of the amusement park. Arlong's like a psychotic clown. (good call mia)
Deep rooted racism isn't something that can be solved easily. I still can't get a read on what direction the arc will turn after the flashback.
Fisher Tiger has 3 swords in that Mariejoa flashback panel! Also 2 guns, which add versatility. A sword in each hand and a pistol in the mouth for when he really has to go all out.
So the flashback starts as two opposing groups who both want the best for their race, but have clashing ideals based on living for the present or for the future. It's hardly a new concept, but it's one that I don't believe Oda has ever done before. I like the setup.
The flashback finally starts on the last page! Hoorrrraaaaaayyyyyy!!
I was sure Fisher Tiger was going to be a tiger shark but I guess not. A sea bream, huh? That must be cool... /google... "mostly eats worms and larvae, and is known to taste very delicious"... Truly a terror of the seas.
On second thought, though, this revelation is awesome. I'm glad that the most notorious fishman didn't do it by winning the gene lottery. And really... I like his design.
Wait, Macro!? Wow. It's no wonder Arlong was an officer. We don't know the guy next to him. He's technically the only remotely possible option to join besides Jinbe on that entire page.
I like Jinbe's old hair better (also Kuroobi's!). Oda is going to have fun changing the pattern on Jinbe's... err... jinbei (clothes).
Ahaha, Arlong's hat and that muscle shirt combo is just... I don't really know why it amuses me to be honest.
Oda, you sly devil, you managed to stretch it out enough to use this flashback as a cliffhanger for two different chapters, and none of it was forced or wasted space. Next week the flashback starts for real. I'm circling my calendar.I love this series.
-
What do you guys think was in Franky's hand on page 14? Also jinbe looked kinda like a scene kid but nevertheless pretty badass on the last page
It probably a fishing pole.
-
At the risk of being burned at the stake.. I expected more from fisher tigers design, i dont think it's bad ass enough for the shit he got up to =(
A lot of Oda's characters don't have that initial "bad-ass" look to them, at least as far as I'm concerned. Many of them look rather goofy, others merely look plain. But as time goes on, and particularly as their stories unfold, they grow into their rightful badass status. Just take a look at Montblanc Noland…were it not for the epic flashback telling his story, I could never have assumed a guy that looked that ridiculous could be that awesome.
Give Fisher Tiger a few chapters and I suspect he will prove to be quite badass, initial impressions of his character design aside.

Just copy the image of him - put shadows over the eyes like when Oda draws people being serious see if you feel the same.

Admittedly I was kinda "meh" with the first part of the chapter. After seeing the Army escape we go to the different districts and look at the NFP telling people to step on the late queen's face. Alright, I got it. It's a widespread movement to get people to denounce the queen's ideals of humans and Fishmen/Mermen getting along. But it felt repetitive even when we moved on the 3rd district and Fukaboshi showed up. Nami's flashback, been there done that but at least we got some new scenes. The last half of the chapter was great though. Caribou wants to kidnap the princess and the build up to the flashback was nice and suspenseful. Excited to get the history lesson on.

you know.. that image of little cute hachi and the others at the top left corner of the page.. i can imagine what would happen next just by seeing it.. i mean look.. the image of them who appear on the sea surface just to peek at shanbody's park.. they seem really long for it..
damn u ODA!!

Well why does he need to be badass looking, he looks like a tough older guy, I think too many obvious muscles or stuff would be kind of silly.

Looks to be a coating Brush possibly - maybe he is learning how to do it for their return journey or just to have the skill. They missed out due to the Sabondy issues first time round but this time it is pretty likely that it is a skill an expert tradesmen like Franky would want to know.

The Chapter was awesome, the second part especially, and Fisher Tiger looks as bad-ass as wolverine!

^I agree. The last thing I need is a filler in the manga. Also, I don't give a damn about characters that are already dead and I don't need to know about their life. Leave that for filler purposes for the anime. I just want to get to the freaking point of the arc and kick Hodi's and Van's asses.
two comments on animetake.
i hope my response will get through to them.
@MDL:
this is actually a great chapter. nice buildup for the flashback.
this is such a major part of the arc that i can't even begin to fanthom the word "filler" being applied here.
this is a majorly important flashback, filling in the gaps surrounding the racism between fishmen/humans, the death of the queen, arlong's will, and overall our perspective of events that have happened so far.
this is a good move by oda. this is storytelling 101. it's time to get filled in on some important stuff.I just want to get to the freaking point of the arc and kick Hodi's and Van's asses.
the strawhats so far have been reacting and re-locating as events escalated,
and are now ready to hear some vital information on important past events, which are directly relevant to the current conflict.
how do you not see the relevance?this flashback can be argued as a very valuable "point" of the arc, because of the information we will be shown, and because it will help put things in perspective as the strawhats try to resolve the fishman takeover attempt.

Ok, so in the flashback the Sun Pirates are already formed, which means that the invasion of Mariejoa already happened, so we probably won't see the invasion of Mariejoa by Fisher Tiger, at least not in this flashback (unless Oda do a flashback inside a flashback, like he did in the Luffy-Ace-Sabo flashback)…
So, I imagine that this flashback will focus in the consequences of his acts against the WG, which probably is what eventually resulted in his death, Queen Otohime's death, and increased the prejudice against humans in FI, and utimately resulted in the sitation the island is right now. And also will bring around the part concerning Arlong and Jinbe, and why Jinbe is taking the responsability for Arlong's actions in East Blue.

ah that makes sense dont know why i didnt think of that

I hope that the Hancock fans don't go NN mode just because in the bottom corner said that Fisher Tiger is the savior of the empress Hancock. I know we'll see her again soon since the WG and especially the nobles, their story is far from over, and I confess, I want her as NN too, but only in the right time. For now, it's flashback time and Jinbei joining time.

DURR NURR HURR WHY IS ODA BUILDING UP ON THE ARC'S CENTRAL CONFLICT AND THE VILLAIN'S MOTIVATION
-
Another great chapter, thanks Mr. Oda.
-
Oh, wow. I was getting Booker T. Washington/W. E. B. Dubois/Martin Luther King Jr. vibes from this chapter all throughout. It's so interesting. I like the unpredictable way the arc is going; A revolution, moral destruction, flashbacks, Nami/Arlong stuff and Fishman explanations.
I loved Luffy throughout all of this. His calm before the storm attitude has always captivated me. It's the subtleties in his personality that are so interesting to me. And I loved Sanji in this chapter. The only other character in the series to have heard Nami's story is Zoro, but we don't really know if he was asleep or not during that explanation, but I'm glad Sanji remembered it enough to such an extent that he's even threatening someone of such power as Jinbie. It's the emotional connections that are so fun to wittness in OP, I think. And I loved Nami's little flashback. I actually did cry a bit reading that. It's interesting how Oda put forth the horrible inhumane and evil opinion of Arlong in our faces and then brought out the 'Arlong Park is Arlong's dream Themepark' and the incomming flashback.
-
Really enjoyed this one–-one of those chapters that reminds me of what I admire about One Piece so much, the world building and scale of things. The connection between the two parks was a nice touch, and for some reason it feels like it's been a while since we've seen serious Nami so that made the Arlong sequence really touching for me (although that arc alone handled that much). Wouldn't mind a long flashback at all.

Indeed, stating it like that definitely puts the chapter in a different light for me…really interesting how different emotions, opinions, and feelings cross paths to form such fatefully tragic and unforgettable memories that places people under the victimization of life, while also bringing in all the pieces and players needed to complete the puzzle.
But yeah, it's pretty crazy when you think about it...I guess you can say I'm looking forward to this upcoming flashback.
-
@Chopper:
ah that makes sense dont know why i didnt think of that
All good I'll admit I too was wondering the way it was drawn was really weird like it was part of his hand - then I thought it might have been a rope that had been coated he was adjusting. Then I realised with Den there Franky would probably be giving him a hand with the coating and learning howto as well.
-
I wonder how Sanji found such a big cup for the mermaid princess.
-
Anyone else get really excited when you got to the page that revealed we're finally getting a flashback for the Sun Pirates?
-
I wonder how Sanji found such a big cup for the mermaid princess.
It's probably Franky's cup.
And yes, I am very excited for the Sunny Pirates flashback.
I expect to be crying buckets of manly tears by the time its over. -
Might I add that young Jinbe looks sick!
-
I wonder how Sanji found such a big cup for the mermaid princess.
Remember the teacup ride at Sabaody park? He stole one of those.
And wouldn't you know it, they just happen to be talking about Sabaody park in this chapter too. It's Oda's little hint.
-
I wonder how Sanji found such a big cup for the mermaid princess.
Well the boat is right there - that said it is abnormally large so I would say hammer space is the likely suspect.

Actually, Ussop was there as well. Everyone in the crew up to that point, sans Nami of course, had gathered back together by the time Nojiko decided to let them in on the story, though Luffy walked out on it.
What Sanji WAS exclusively present for (ignoring Luffy, who was almost certainly not paying attention) was Yosaku's introduction bit while the trio were sailing toward Nami's homeland post-Baratie, in which Yosaku mentioned the then-Shichibukai Jinbei in relation to Arlong. As such, Sanji IS the only one among them (except Nami, I imagine) who would have made the connection between the two without additional prompting.

Meh, I'm not a fan of flashbacks. Hopefully this is short and we get back to the Strawhats…to be quite honest, I don't really care about Arlong or his story. I'm more interested in Hodi and why Jinbei wants Luffy to stay away
-
Really? Hmm, I need to rewatch the Arlong ark, then. But still, Usopp and Zoro are currently not with the crew and Sanji, the one who shows how much he cares the most, is; that's really all I ment. Thanks for the info~ c:

To be quite honest, I'm not interested in your opinion, because it's terrible. It's pretty clear that this flashback is about more than just Arlong, it's about Fisher Tiger and the queen, two of the most influential people in the entire series. "Hurpa durp, I jusd want too c luffy hit hodee!". And why are you not into flashbacks? Are you against world building and character building? Do you just like to see people punching eachother? Go watch Transformers and think before you post.

I like stories that focus more on the "now" than the past. Personally, I'd prefer a summary of what happened over several pages rather than a long flashback. I want to see how the SH's handle the news, what happens afterwards, etc. rather than watching the news unfold in the flashback.
To me, characters like the SH's are the most fun for me to watch. I don't care much for depth in the development of these new characters like Fisher Tiger/Queen Otohime. I already know enough about them (the Queen is about promoting peace between humans and Fisher Tiger is about taking direct action). It's just how I prefer stories more. Unless these characters show up later (both are dead), personally, it's not important to me how deep their character is.
A flashback with Sabo, for instance, basically alluded to the fact that we will be seeing him down the line in the story, so it was interesting to see the flashback (even though much of it was a bore, but I can deal with it).
But oh noes, I'm disagreeing with the consensus, let's all react by flaming the user. Geez, learn to accept other people's, even if you disagree with them. There's not much productivity in responding to anyone you disagree with "you're in idiot, and your opinion sucks."
You do realize that this flash back is going to explain all that, you know that right?
Yes, I'm well aware it'll likely answer that question, but the question could just as easily be answered across several pages rather than a long flashback. I'm hoping this flashback is short for that reason
-
Oh man this flashback is going to be awesome, I need to remind myself every Wednesday now to keep away from spoilers….. Cannot wait for the flashback in its entirety and to appreciate every bit of it, I love Oda's storytelling, it is superb.
-
I still have no idea where this arc is going. Initially I thought we were going to get a war torn, post- Whitebeard War Fishman Island, where the entire place is in a social upheaval. Once we got here, and it being much calmer, I thought it was going to be a short, in transit arc. Now it seems to be going back to a social upheaval arc (though obviously not post-war). I still think neither Decken nor Hodi are final boss material. This flashback is coming more early in the arc than I expected, which makes me think it's going to be shorter. I'm starting to doubt a new crew member. I can't get a read on this arc, and I love it.
I wonder what Hyozo's relationship is to everyone (I know he's a hired gun). He is in the flashback image with Kuroobi, Hachi, and Arlong, yet he isn't a member of the Sunny pirates.
Cariboo, while I was initially unimpressed with you, you are the character I most look forward to seeing what you have up your sleeve now.
Luffy was awesome this chapter. I really did not like the "Fisher Tiger… that sounds familiar" part, but his face, his composure as he drank the tea listening to Jinbe was awesome. One of the many reasons why he's my favorite character.
"I bet he's doing well." Obvious foreshadowing to the obvious eventual return of Johnny and Yosaku.
I think this flashback will carry on through June. There is a lot to cover.
Great chapter. I'm really digging this arc. Can't wait to see what it builds up to.

I hear you, dude, fuck story, as long as shit happens that's all I care about. I mean it's really dumb that one piece is like 600 chapters long, I wish somebody would just tell me how it ends all ready, that's all I care about.
To me, characters like the SH's are the most fun for me to watch. I don't care much for depth in the development of these new characters like Fisher Tiger/Queen Otohime. So you prefer flat, 2-dimensional side characters instead of fleshed out believable characters? Have you tried Bleach by any chance? You'd love it.
A flashback with Sabo, for instance, basically alluded to the fact that we will be seeing him down the line in the story, so it was interesting to see the flashback (even though much of it was a bore, but I can deal with it).
Yes, and this flashback is going to deal with this massive arc that we're just now starting that has been being built up for years. Do you honestly believe that the two are going to just disappear after this arc? FT was a revolutionary before even Dragon, Otohime was looking to change the world.
But oh noes, I'm disagreeing with the consensus, let's all react by flaming the user. Geez, learn to accept other people's, even if you disagree with them. There's not much productivity in responding to anyone you disagree with "you're in idiot, and your opinion sucks."
Sorry that I had to be the one to break it to you dude, but you are an idiot and you're opinion does suck.

Wow…..all this time i thought fishman tiger had died because of his siege on Mariejois. This is entirely new material guys. Not things covered by hancock (though i wouldnt mind seeing) or anything else. This is pretty beast i must say.
Lol and i must say its been almost 100 chapters since fisher tiger was mentioned.

How the fuck would Fisher Tiger be able to establish the sunny pirates from freed slaves, if he's dead?
Nobody thought that FT died at his siege of Mariejois.

You are welcome to your opinion and being different isn't always going to be a crime.
But as for people respecting your opinion and right to be different on this forum may be a slightly big ask :P
