Oil prices are going up because people are speculating in energy futures because of the potential that supplies will be interrupted; actual production hasn't been bothered in the least.
A few years ago, prices kept going up and that was explained as the natural result of increased demand. Then people started talking about investigating the oil companies and investment firms. Prices for a barrel promptly fell to about a third of what they were and have remained fairly low up until people started buying oil futures again.

Easy way to say it. They'll find any excuse to raise oil prices and try to justify it for a reason that has absolutely no effect on them.
-
Or, another way of saying it: Greedy idiots artificially inflate oil prices because they're too rich for it to bother them.

Amnesty International has demanded the release of a Vietnamese human rights activist arrested for allegedly calling for a Middle East-style uprising in the south-east Asian country.
Dr Nguyen Dan Que, a prominent government critic, was detained on Saturday after authorities said he was caught "red-handed keeping and distributing documents" calling for the overthrow of the government.

Correction, the world is starting in 2012.
People always need something to overthrow.

-Pro-Gaddafi forces remain 10km outside Nalut, Al Jazeera is told. It is a the capital of a mountainous region in the west of the country.[hide]
Last night, before sunset, about 25 armed cars tried to enter the vicinity of Nalut town and controlled one of the entrances. We had to to pull back, and took guard of [another] entrance to the town, helping journalists and medical aid as well as food supplies into the town.
We heard that the news about tanks and other armed vehicles was not true at the time. It was not a very large-sized force.

-A Live Phone Caller tweets, reportedly from Tripoli, that they are recognising the same people in the footage of pro-Gaddafi demonstrations aired on state TV.

I get the feeling those pro-gaddafi demonstrators, or at least some of them are essentially under orders to demonstrate.
Like how Gaddafi had threatned Libyans abroad that they had to show support in their abroad countries or have their support lines terminated.

Just like what Mubarak did, get some of his forces and pay some people to go out for him.
I actually heard that some of them were paid like 10000 or 100000 Libyan Dinars.
Also this.[hide]jI4vlWbKFFw[/hide]
Libyan state TV has been showing soldiers inspecing weapons they say were handed in by opposition forces in Az Zawiyah.
They say the men "felt guilty for what they had done after listening to lies on foreign media". They also said the surrender was peaceful and that the men were not arrested nor were their names taken…

-Gaddafi is doing some kind of celebration. It's called "The rise of people authority". http://english.aljazeera.net/watch_now/
-Gaddafi:[hide]-I want to remind you of some parts of that historic declaration. Libya a Jamahirya (Masses) because the people rule the country
-There is no King, or President or Leader in a Jamahiriya, only the people rule, no law is issued without their approval
-The People's Committees rule here in Libya, the world does not understand that.
-These days we hear my name a lot in the media. I started the 1969 revolution, gave the power to the people, then rested in my tent
-I don't have any power. I freed the people then gave them the power. The Libyan people are free to rule themselves as they wish
-Lawyers came to me on the 15th of Feb, told me we want to complain to you because you are our guide
-"Mohammed "What was the name of that thing, huh?" It was called the Lawyers Union Committee, what does this have to do with that?"
-They told me that Union only represents a minority of lawyers out of the 1,500, but they are free to form a Union.
-They held my pictures and told me we would die for you. I don't have a position, I am not a president but they wanted me.
-They told me the Imperialist media is focusing on me. They said Libya has no constitution, only Gaddafi, (people chant for him)
-They chant God, Mumaar & Libya only. Gaddafi: This is the first time I hear such chants. Muammar has no power to resign from
-I was surprised to see all the demonstrations in my favour all over the Jamahiriya
-All these chants of the Libyan people were surprising, I don't watch TV, I don't watch Satellite TV that enrage people
-They want me to resign from a position I don't have. They are challenging the accomplishments of the Libyan people
-They didn't know the difference between Libya, Lebanon & Liberia, now all Libyans hold their heads up high
-They want to insult the Libyan people, how can Gaddafi make Italy kneel & kiss the hands of the son of Omar Al Mukhtar!
-How can Gaddafi make Italy pay for its colonialism of Libya! How can he give the oil to his people & free Africa!
-Men, women, children all over Libya went out to demonstrate for me, the TV stations didn't cover them, we have it all on tape.
-"Gaddafi made Italy condemn its past & pay us for their colonialism"
-The outside world wants Gaddafi to resign, resign from what? I have no authority. They don't want the peace & love that we live in
-Al Qaeda Sleeper Cells have entered Libya, some Libyans lived in Afghanistan & Iraq, they don't care about Libya
-The US Intelligence knows them, they handed them to us, we released them & they apologised but now they are back, the traitors
-You find them in Misurata, Benghazi in Zawiya, these sleeper cells, also in Bayda which was very secure, they defended themselves
-These battalions train in Benghazi, like an army, in case the Libyan people are attacked, the sleeper cells attacked the battalion
-Cross fire started when the sleeper cells attacked the battalion, 150 died, or 200, then they said thousands died.
-The soldiers were killed inside their camp, I told them stop, don't attack them back. They took the weapons & took control of Bayda
-They started a radio station & then took over the mosques, they wanted to kill the people, the people were scared, families fled
-Women are hiding now, they are scared from these armed men. The same happened in Benghazi with Fadheel Bu Omar Battalion
-Fadheel Bu Omar was a hero who fought the Italians, but he was backstabbed, like these traitors now
-They then took over Benghazi radio station, then one man took over, he was from Guantanamo, & started executing people
-He was be-heading them like Zarqawi, people were living in peace before, he forced the military to resign & the diplomats
-Don't believe this news of the resignations abroad
-They took over dangerous arms so the military started bombarding the weapons depots so the terrorists don't take them over
-Then the world said "Look they are killing innocent unarmed civilians" these people who kill civilians!
-We are sorry for all those who died from the police & the citizens. You know Al Qaeda don't do demonstrations.
-have you ever heard of Al Qaeda starting demonstrations! These are lies, lies. There were no demonstrations anywhere in Libya
-The people went out to demonstrate against those who were killing them. But the world got info from media that has no presence here
-Libyans don't like foreign journalists. The news is always vague from Libya. If someone writes "1,000 were killed" they believe him
-Everyday the armed people attack the people in Bayda & Benghazi, they free the prisoners & arm them, murderers, drug dealers!
-In Libya there are no political prisoners, not one. Because politics belongs to the people, we want people to take authority
-They took pictures with their mobile phones, they say things that are not true. We demand the UN to come & investigate
-Those who were killed some were civilians, but also officers who were defending the weapons, they should ask why there were there?
-Will America allow this? They killed those in Waco Texas & Russia bombed the parliament
-Like in Gaza, the Israelis attack the Palestinians, NATO attacks the Afghans & Swat Valley, it's allowed if they carry weapons
-Why are they not condemned. This is a plan for America to take Libyan oil or land, to colonise it
-Of course not fighting back allowed them to take over the eastern cities, they said "Who ever goes out we will kill him"
-People came from all over Libya to see me, especially at this time, from Darnah before the terrorists took it over.
-All the demonstrations in Libya were in support of my revolution. They want to take over Libyan oil, that is impossible!
-We will fight for Libya from its north to its south, to the last drop
-People are calling us, saying save us from these armed criminals. We have recordings of them, the world can hear them
-Then they attack the foreigners here, they tell their embassies, so these countries withdraw their ambassadors
-Saif Al Islam warned you of this, these criminals who scared the foreign oil workers because they are scared
-If there were peaceful demonstrations why would they withdraw their ambassadors from Libya?
-In Italy there were demonstrations in 30 cities demanding the leader to resign, no one withdrew their ambassadors
-Why would they withdraw the oil workers if the demonstrations were peaceful?! This is proof that they weren't peaceful
-Why would peaceful demonstrators attack oil workers? Libya will stay powerful.
-We Libyans have to investigate the Bayda to Benghazi operation. To find out who was the culprit.
-Who killed the citizens & also who killed the police? The police are also Libyans, they have families. We must find out.
-They killed them like Zarqawi does. This has nothing to do with Gaddafi, it concerns Libyans, not the outside world
-We invite the world to investigate. The UN has nothing to do with internal conflicts only between countries.
-How can the UN issue a resolution based on media reports? They are lies 100 %
-The UN will regret this & apologise for resolution 1970, how can they get involved in internal issues?

Damn it! Who the hell cares what Russia thinks!? Do it anyway!
The European Union will hold a summit of its 27 heads of state in Brussels on March 11 to discuss the situation on Libya.
Why!? Why not do it tomorrow or in three days or so instead of waiting another 9 days to decide to do something!?

Well, if Russia opposes the idea there is no way it will be legitimized by the UN. They could just veto the decision as they are a permanent member in the security council. A similar thing happened in 2004 with Darfur if I remember correctly.
I don't get why they have to wait 9 days either.
-
Goddammit Russia.
Also if Chavez goes to Libya just before Gaddafi gets Nicolae'd, we could easily be two dictators short by the end of this.

It's harsh, but I agree with you on that one. The problem is, Europe, especially Italy, sold Gaddafi so many weapons, you could literally destroy the whole African continent with it. Plus, the rigidity of almost all states when it came to even small sanctions against Libya, not even military intervention, is still absolutely shameful.
You could literally imagine them counting their petroleum barrels. But still, I believe in the Libyans. The people in Benghazi are planning a fucking walk to Tripolis and are training soldiers. They have to fucking kick Gaddafi's arse.
On a different note, seeing that Ahmed Shafik has stepped down is a really good sign for the young democracy in Egypt. Cool as hell.
The interim government in Tunisia has turned a bit unstable, with five ministers resigning left and right (out of protest because of members of the old regime still being in charge). But today they announced the elections for the 24. of July. I'm still a bit nervous but I think that's a good sign…Unfortunately, there is some really heavy stuff going on at both the Libyan/Egyptian and Tunisian/Libyan border right now. Libyan refugees, but also workers from Bangladesh, the Philippines and Vietnam are stuck in the border, in the middle of nowhere. There are thousands of people, who walked hundreds of miles, without enough food or shelter. This could end in another catastrophe, far away from the war zones.
-
Any updates on how many cities Ghadaffi has retaken?
I'm worried that he might get a 'second wind.' -
