He's lying,
Not like he ever cared about stealing other people's food.
Yay, a new chapter to entertain me on a snow day here in wisco. Also, the broad themes of the arc are coming into focus:
Shirahoshi is an even weaker version of camie: a girl who has dreams but has never even made the slightest attempt to follow them. So luffy doesn't like her, but he does pity her and thus encourages her to rebel against her restrictions and follow her dreams. She'll be visiting the surface by the end of the arc, that's a promise.
I also love how luffy makes no claim to virtue. Is he bad? That's your call. People always seem to forget around here that he's an antisocial miscreant of a pirate… and revels in it.
Similarly, now that Luffy is helping shirahoshi go on an adventure, damn the consequences, he'll of course be blamed for her kidnapping. The entire poseidon army is going to be mobilized to take down the strawhats, leaving them completely vulnerable to whatever scheme hodi and Vander are planning.
Speaking of whom, they are being set up as a too stereotypical of villains for my taste. Mad man and supremecist partnering up, with the typical variety of sidekicks to fight the rest of the crew. I'm currently hoping that Hodi's crew end up like the General class zombies of Moria's, and are matched up against the poseidon army in the end.
It is hard though to argue against hodi's assertion that the poseidon army lacks racial pride. They were formed only to search out Vander Decken and to protect the FI royalty. Why weren't they defending the mermaids from pirates? Why are they so reliant on pirate protection? It is somewhat pathetic for a supposedly strong race. The seahorse and carp advisers are almost guaranteed to be corrupt too. They are the real rulers and the king does as they command. What a wussy royalty.
The crew power ups so far are looking impressive. It's nice that everyone can hold their own now against entire armies worth of enemies. Nami and Usopp used to run away from scrubs when they didn't have one of the three monsters at their back. Now they can kick ass in awesome fashion. Got to love it.
@Al!naJames:
Luffy + Shirahoshi = OTP
it is a bit too soon to speculate.
The giant mermaid seems to have a dream to discover the world. Too early as well and Oda is hard to predict
The fact that his ability is to be able to target anything should automatically disqualify anyone even thinking he can be a crew member.
Not necessarily, since his power might only be able to target one person at a time and/or rely on touching the target before it can worked. Plus the attacks can be blocked as well. Not saying I think he'll join, just that his devil fruit is not what disqualifies him as a future crew member
Vander Decken VS Usopp
Make it happen, Oda.
@HiroVoid:

I hope that he can have only one target at a time, and that he needs to touch the target first. That would also explain why he didn't want to touch Jones. Being able to target anything would be a little too overpowered. He could try to kill even Neptune every day.
First fishman with a DF :D
Damn he looks really strong..
It's pretty strange how Shirahoshi reacts to Luffy… Or maybe is she always like that?
Yeah, would be awesome… King of Snipers vs Vander Decken, the guy who can target anything.
As for the chapter - I loved the princess part. I think there is a small possibility for her to join the crew. We have a clear dream for her. Only thing she lacks is some nice fighting power and we're good to go with this prediction.

I thought the same when he put the glove. It makes sense.
This chapter was really great, and Shirahoshi in this chapter doesn't look anymore like a big Nami.
@Aru:

She'll overcome it when she has to fight San Juan :ninja:
And with the new cover story, we'll hopefully see many old faces.

I would think the fact that he's trying to force the Mermaid Princess to marry him on threat of death would disqualify him for that… :getlost:
I wonder if it might just be Decken's right hand that is set to the mermaid princess as a target, and he's free to choose anything else as a target with his left hand. Bonus if he's somehow hiding 2 more arms behind that cape, to match his number of legs, but that cape doesn't really seem like it's hiding more arms.
Really epic chapter… now we have 2 captains, crewmates and Caribou + maybe the Neptun army... Big Mama maybe will play a role as well
I seriously dunno what fights we can expect. I would like to see Decken vs Sanji, cuz he is now the second person who was called strong by Luffy... The first one was Hyouzo. But Sanji fighting a captain probably won't happen.
Brook, Nami and Usopp looked truly great in this chapter.
Zoro was utterly bad-ass even if I would haved liked to see how Brook would block that attack
Vander Decken's DF seems really interesting and I want to see it in an actual fight.
Mermaid princess is hot but meeeeh. A crybaby ala Vivi.
I hope next chapter we will see Robin, Frabky and maybe Chopper/Sanji
Seriously this is an freaking awesome arc already and I can't predict anything... And that's great
My reaction:

It's quite fun to see that the part of Vander Decken's body that was in the bubble was the upper one, because he's a merman… Would Arlong get only his legs in the bubble, if he had a DF? ^^
Loved this chapter..
Hoping usopp will fight Decken.
Being able to target anything would make for a amazing sniper battle.

Err… Decken's a fishman...
Err… Decken's a fishman...
Hmmm, ok, but then why does he have 4 legs?
I find it pretty strange.
Anyone notice Nami's Clima Tact changed, it doesn't have the balls which I assumed held Dials.
Is it me or Usopp's face on the newspaper is concealed ?
Maybe it implies that he will keep his Sogeking name on his poster.
Hmmm, ok, but then why does he have 4 legs?
No idea, but being a merman wouldn't make that any less weird.
I presume a merMAN's tail splits at ~30 years just like a merMAID's does, but that still wouldn't explain Decken's legs.
just looked it up so sorry if someone already mentioned it
but mato in english is mark or target, so since this is the mato mato curse its probaby a df, since to the mermen and fishfolk having a df would be a living nightmare for them
anyway my theory is whoever he touches becomes his next target that he will lock onto, but he can have 2 targets one being for each hand (this could be extended to all limbs aswell) which is why he put his glove on when he shook hodi's hand which was his right so he wouldn't lose his target for his right which is the princess.
The only reason i think that it cn be one target per hand is that if he wants to keep throwing stuff the princesses way then he cannot lose that target, which would be a problem in battle as he could either not attack or lose his target. and i don't think he would be a very big threat if he never got into a fight, why else would'nt anyone have beaten him?
but im hoping that he will put an actual mark on the targets body like the black dot from pirate mythology
Hmmm, ok, but then why does he have 4 legs?
I find it pretty strange.
Why does the Minister of the Right look like a Seahorse with arms and a nose, instead of a human with a seahorse tail? It's just the way Oda felt like designing them.
@The:
Good chapter. Anyone else think Decken looks like a cat? (at least his face?)
Yeah, that's what I got from this chapter.
Because the Japanese name for the shark he is based on is nekozame (cat-shark).
Is it me or Usopp's face on the newspaper is concealed ?
It's not. It's clearly Ussop with his hat right of Nami's face. Only if you are saying that his face is not shown, so then I agree.

Yeah I meant the face. Only his nose and hat kinda stand out.

His face is shown, it's just so small that you can't make it out unless you try really hard.

A question. Does Wadatsumi's …..second name mean anything in particular ?
Awesome chapter! I really wish there was more to read, but that is what next week is for.
I really like how they drew Usopp and brook in that image.
If Brook wasn't wearing Flower patterned pants, he would be as awesome as Usopp.
Where Is Sanji on the cover story. Did they fail to get a pic once again xD

Second pic (Third if you count Luffy in that row) from the left on the top row. Between Zoro and Nami.
It looks like his hair is covering his face, though.

You can't see his face xD So did they once again failed to take a picture xD
Helloooooooo MANSOPP. Also great to see Zoro's slasher smiler again.
I was scared for a sec with the princess because I thought we were going to get Hancock II, but now I'm intrigued to see how their relationship will develop.
Overall, great chapter. Can't wait to see the cover for next week!
that would be funny.
A fishman with a devil fruit power must have it hard. Fishmen are more powerful in water and he can't swim XD
Also i like the new manly usopp. Where are snaji and chopper btw? i thought they'd gone to the palace as well but if not wouldn't they be at mermaid cafe meaning they may have already been caught by the princes there
Had to fanart it, duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun~

He's next to Zoro. They got the back of his head
Edit: Oh, you got an answer. I forgot to refresh..

You are just making the fandom love the idea of them togheter even more. :ninja:
It's cute, and looks good.
Wow, what a great looking picture.
The eyes are so detailed looking.
He's next to Zoro. They got the back of his head
Muahahaaa.. he is just too fast for them xD
And someone is saying Usopp vs Decken? Would be a nice match even if it would mean Sanji had to fight someone else
@ Alina of 8D8D
:D
The good news is that Sanji will be able to lead a normal and peaceful life when One Piece ends.

What do you mean
It's things like Oda remembering not to let the Marines get a picture of Sanji's face, just so he can continue to be trolled, that I love about One Piece. It's a small detail, but I like it.

Sanji vs. Caribou, perhaps?
Though I feel that Sanji vs. Decken would also be highly appropriate… Depends on whether the Decken/Shirahoshi situation escalates into something of a high enough level for it to truly become Luffy's problem, though if it does: Nami vs. Hodi anyone?
What do you mean
The marines don't have any actual pictures of Sanji, so if he were to ever retire from piracy, they'd never recognize him.
Wow quite the exciting chapter. I see what looks ot me to be so many hints and foreshadowings… My excitement level rises--fun fun fun.
The Princess thinks Vanderdekken hates her and is trying to kill her. Vanderdekken, in typical male fashion (jk, don't jump down my throat, lol) blindly assumes she must love him (he is so awesome after all) and that his love messages (which she, in love with him, would totally understand, right?) are being stopped by her dad, lol. Nice setup. I can see it going either way, with her suddenly realizing all those knives and axes with flowers were love messages, and sighing at the sweetness of it all, even after 10 years (you really must love me), or she finds her legs (Ha!) and comes into a personality of her own, visits the surface (Little mermaid anyone) with Luffy's help and falls for him (the new running gag--every new fabled beauty eventually falls for Luffy, while he remains indifferent, the whole driving poor Sanji round the bend from an agony of frustration). Personally I am thinking it will be the latter, but Oda could surprise me--wouldn't be the first time, lol.
I am not seeing VanDedekken potential nakamate material, because his dream is to make the princess his bride--hardly something he needs to be with the SHs to achieve--unless the story moves in a direction where she demands something from him in order to prove his worth, but it still seems weak as a motivation to become a SH, and, as several others have said before, there's the whole stalker, "me or death" thing.
I agree with whoever said that the Ministers of the left and right are corrupt--I'm beginning to think they may in fact be behind the shadow that is over the whole island, mentioned by Caimi back at her place. The fact that the guards cannot get close to the pricess due to the 5 minute rule, the "convenience " of a mistake in the guards' scheduling right when they were expecting to be hosting some of the most imfamous pirates around for a banquet (and he knew about it right at the moment she started screaming, no saying they would investigate), the fact that Seahorse minister shows up to see what is going on, and doesn't confront her highness about the voice he thinks he heard, that they are in charge of caring for the King's where-abouts at all times, as well. All too convenient to me.
Loving resolute Usopp, Nami and Brook.
Anwyay, sorry for the wall of text. Enough from me for now.
I'm waiting for a Gangs of New York-type resolution to this current conflict that leads into a much larger, much more insidious plot against Fishman Island since Hodi and Van der Decken seem too minor to be Major Arc Villains.
What do you mean
It is very likely that Sanji will never get a good wanted poster in the series.
If the WG cannot get a clear shot of him, marines and bounty hunters will never find him. Duval proved us that fact.
Thus Sanji will live in peace in east blue on the baratie.
Chopper will be safe as well because his bounty is so low and he is too cute to be hurt or imprisoned.
