Excited about having a new monitor to replace my burnt out one (finally being able to use my desktop again), I jumped straight on to listening to music.

I put Horace Silvers on rotation and decided I'd listen to jazz all day, but then shortly after one album, queued up Melvins deciding I was in a sludgier mood. Not long after listening to Houdini I felt more like I wanted to listen to sunshine pop. But now I'm thinking about hip-hop.

It's like two weeks of missed music time is hitting me at once and it's killing me.

That's a nice little rotation there, haha. I've had those moments. Right now, though, I've been listening to the front and back ends of that list in preparation for one of my new radio shows. I need to get some drone/experimental metal time in for my other new show.

Also, on new music, a friend of mine called quite a few things to my attention, mostly metal. New things I'm looking forward to: Amebix, Eyehategod, Autopsy, Toxic Holocaust, Opeth, Death Breath, Neurosis, Krallice, Shining, Altar of Plagues, Pentagram, Rotten Sound, Cro-Mags, Cynic and, potentially, Wolves in the Throne Room. This will definitely be a great year

Really been getting into Voltaire's stuff recently. I'd heard a few of his songs before, but I didn't really recognize or understand his style. But yeah, I love the dark humor style approach to his songs.

Also, I had no idea he was the one who did those songs for Billy and Mandy.

As for worse? Well, NSBM is there for combining the worst of black metal with the worst of mankind. At least there isn't any sort of meeting between the NSBM guys and the loli worshipping crowd. Oh wait…

Nickelback is a troop of Canadian men who, upon hitting the age of 13, physically progressed as usual, but were mentally stunted. Left stagnating in the mindset of a pre-teen, Kroeger formed the band, using his grating voice to echo what incredibly juvenile notions happened to be running amok within his brain at the time.

When the band became popular, Nickelback in itself began to morph, taking on a strange new quality: the ability to incur inbreeding. As the band's bafflingly ignorant anthems permeated the depths of the world, their sounds became essentially an inbreeding signal. Seconds into a Nickelback song, the average coherent individual may notice the growing need to fuck his or her sibling, a quick acting catalyst that flushes the brain of any intelligible thought in a matter of seconds; turning off the music prematurely has been proven to kill the urge, but any more than one minute of exposure to Nickelback's music guarantees deformation in future generations (200 out of 250 voluntary experimentees noted that after listening to Nickelback, there was a heavy influx of mental retardation diagnosed amongst their offspring).

I have to confess I just downloaded Kaiserlich Lolis Marsch (Impeial loli march, with wrong German gramar. I'm sure they meant Kaiserlicher Loli Marsch...)

It's always a tie between Tago Mago and Future Days for me. Tago Mago's the musically shocking and immense album, that's incredibly cohesive and brilliant as an album, whereas Future Days is the easily accessible, short, fun and effective record.

I feel Future Days can be picked up anytime, but Tago Mago has tracks like Peking O and Aumgn, which though wonderful, have to be played in succession with the rest of the album. Oh Yeah's my favorite song ever though.

Opeth's new album should be good. More fusion/psychodelia than metal, it seems. So far the only song leaked sounds great!

There's also Dream Theater. I don't know. There are leaked bits that sound great, while others sound pretty meh. I still have some hope left for these guys.

Mastodon's The Hunter so far sounds good, but not stellar. Crack in the Skye was a let down for a lot of people, but I loved it. I hope they don't disappoint.

And I didn't know Cynic had an album planned for 2011 at all, that's awesome news. Looking forward to it!

All of their early 70s shit is great, but I'd go with Ege Bamyasi as my favorite, such a groovy album.

Tago Mago's my favorite. That album just feels so good to listen to. It's like a brain massage. Tago Mago>Ege Bamyasi=Monster Movie. Those three are masterpieces, though.

Have any of you ever really fallen in love with an album that, upon your first listen, sounded shitty, or un-notable?

I was listening to this masterpiece again earlier for the 50th time.

It is my favorite straight up rock album of all time and the first six times I ever listened to it, I could never hear anything notable about it. It's like I hit Play, suddenly an hour goes by, and I would be "Wait the album's over?! I don't remember HEARING it!"

So I was interested, since I heard amazing things about The Wrens, but I wanted to at least hear the album before I wrote it off.

Then one day suddenly the first song starts up, it sounds beautiful, it quickly segues into the second track and suddenly I'm hearing rock music that just excitedly, incredibly, digs its way into me and I suddenly against all odds realize how great it sounds and how much I loved it. Suddenly I remember hearing it five times before too. Just out of nowhere, suddenly it just reaches me and now it's in my top 5 albums ever. I'll never get over that.

So yeah, have you guys ever had a grower like that for you?

Does Pet Sounds count? Since its one of the most highly acclaimed albums of all time and all.

First couple times I listened to it I was very "eh. So this is what all the hype is about? I don't get it." (Nevermind that its had 40 years to inspire and influence other musicians, so before I was even born music had been altered by it) Mostly I just dug the three tracks I already knew from the singles. It was sort of neat that they were basically all songs about love, and that unified it sure, but I didn't get it.

And then I read the liner notes. And really payed attention, and just listened to the album, no outside distractions, trying to hear the specific things that Brian Wilson pointed out that he was proud of. And wow. Holy crap. It wasn't until the 8th or 9th time I heard it that it really settled in just how layered and nuanced it all was, and how GOOD it was. I mean, the part where he's going "Listen… listen... listen..." and there's the rhythm of a heart beat?

And its a cliche easy pick, but now its one of my all time favorite albums.

Still don't like the 2 note bike horn though.

There are so few albums that I love immediately. I may enjoy it in the first round of listens, but it will take me months before I realize HOLY SHIT THIS KICKS ALL KINDS OF ASS. The first times I listened to Frank Zappa and the Mountain Goats, I didn't think much of either of them. I think it took me half a year to fall in love with Zappa the first time and maybe a full year to digest the Mountain Goats. Hell, with the Mountain Goats, some of the albums I once disliked of theirs (Heretic Pride and We Shall All Be Healed) turned into a couple of my favorites.

As for emo, I'm pretty sure Stephen is into it, too.

Well, when I first listened to Fear of a Blank Planet from Pocupine Tree I went kind of "meh" and didn't listen to it for a year or two, and then suddenly right as the next album came out, I started listening to it again and it's now my favorite PT album. I'm wondering if I need to get their next album before I really get into The Incident.

I still can't get into Pet Sounds. I have tried….because so many people rave about it. But I have never liked the Beach Boys in general. So my own personal fail, I guess.

Also, not album specific but I couldn't stand Steely Dan at all when I first heard them, and now I think they are awesome. There's probably many more examples of albums I didn't like at first, but I'll have scan through my collection to remember.

Music is such a personal, intimate reaction, that there aren't really any rights or wrongs. Movies are kind of the same, personal experience will vary. You can compare and contrast all the elements that make things up, and its really easy to agree that, on a technical level, X is better than Y, but that doesn't automatically mean you'll like X.

I'm not a big fan of the Godfather. Its a perfect movie, not a flaw, many things to love about it… but I don't care for it. And I like the Beatles, but I don't love them, and I downright dislike a lot of the druggier, more experimental second half of their career. (Revolution 9, what the hell was up with that? ) But to some people they're the greatest and most influential band of all time and didn't have a single miss, and that's hard to argue with.

Oh, I totally agree. I was being a bit facetious. But I do tend to at least try to appreciate music that has been given decades of acclaim.

Obviously Revolution 9 gets made fun of a lot, I'm a huge fan of the Beatles and I hate that song. I have an aversion to any songs that play music backwards. Like that one ELO song, Fire on High, I think…I always have to shut it off if I hear it.

Yeah, pretty much. Me, I'd say I'm actually a pretty big fan of The Beatles and I think I actually prefer their later stuff over their earlier stuff (but Revolution 9, yeah, that's just…what?). Although, I have to admit, I'm actually not a huge fan of The White Album. Don't get me wrong, it's great and there are several songs on it that I just love, but it's pretty heavy length-wise, has a lot of tunes that are either quirky or just don't stand out to me, and I'm still not sure how I feel about their take on the country folk genre. Sgt. Pepper, however, I just adore.

For another example, I've really gotten into Yes recently after listening to their 90125 album, but I was soon after told to listen to Close to the Edge, Fragile and The Yes Album to get the true Yes experience. At first I didn't think too much of the albums (except for Yes Album, which I almost immediately loved) as they seem kind of long, tedious, and unremarkable, but as I've listened to them more and more they've definitely grown on me. I'm glad to hear you are digging the original side of Yes, Nobody! I never understood how people could not have the patience to listen to longer songs, though. Some music just needs to be drawn out!

Speaking of longer songs, I've been meaning to drop this here for some time:

The Subhumans have been rising in the ranks of my favorite bands for some time, even after only listening to The Day the Country Died (somehow, I've only discovered them about a year ago). This song, though, is just such a phenomenal punk epic that I think deserves some attention. Give it a listen if you feel so inclined (and have about 17 minutes to spare).
