No, Latin America used it too!

First manga I read was Rurouni Kenshin. Bought vol 1 of it along with vol 1 of Naruto and Dragonball.
-
First manga I read was Fruits Basket.
Not long after that I was introduced to Shaman King, Naruto, and One Piece.
-
Soon after that my friend introduced me to Inuyasha.
-
My first mango was Naruto as well.
-
My first is One Piece as I didn't know of the existence of manga until around this time last year.
-
First manga, I read was DBZ. I always loved Goku and Vegeta. They had a great interaction. I think Toriyama intented to end the story at the Cell arc. I always liked Videl.
-
Oddly my first manga was Bleach. Because I was told it was the best. Boy was that person wrong.
-
Technically, the first manga I've ever read was a Cowboy Bebop manga.
Wasn't too bad.
The first series that I followed was One Piece, back in the day when Zolo was still Zoro and some swears were still allowed.
Sigh -

That chick with the giant boobs is my fav.

SighViz has actually gotten a bit better with their releases…
Ignoring what they did in Skypeia with "Kami Eneru"

SighI think I read the Cowboy Bebop manga. It can never be as awesome as the original (the anime version).
Cowboy Bebop defines 50 percent through its ost and the atmosphere, especially the "film noir" atmosphere. The rest is the charisma of its characters. It had one of the best ending in anime. It is the kind of ending that screams "no sequel". it is so satisfying.
The ending of "Nadia the secret of blue water" was outstanding as well. I was at the brink of tear at end.
Speaking of ending. I wonder if Luffy dying would be the best way to end One Piece. It will be a gigantic tear jerk ending. Not only making a shitty sequel will seem impossible but we will have the timeless impression that One Piece was good from the beginning to the end. It will be so satisfying.

DBZ for anime.
Naruto for manga.
-
I grew up reading Doraemon and Dragon Ball. They were a large part of my childhood.
Then some of Tezuka's works. As for anime, I don't remember. As a child I preferred Disney cartoon.
-
First Anime - Pokemon then DBZ
First Manga - Bobobo-bo bo-bobo -
First ones I remember from when I lived in Colombia
Dragon Ball
Samurai X
Caballeros del Zodiaco (Saint Seiya in spanish lol)
Sailor Moon -
My first anime ever was Unico. However I was completely unaware of the fact that cartoons came from any place other than that one magical cartoon factory which existed purely in my mind. According to this idiotic theory of mine, cartoons were drawn that day and were voice acted as I watched (I even had the bizzare belief that voice actors came together each time I popped a movie in the vcr cuz I was just that special in my mind)
Anywho. After that came Pokemon and shortly thereafter Digimon. At this point I wasn't even aware that japanese cartoons existed. Apparantly by that time I believed that different cartoon studios existed, but they were all jam packed in america. In fact, come to think of it, I don't think I was even aware of the existance of Japan itself. I think the only asian countries which existed in my mind were China (cuz that's where everything I owned andstilldo was made) and vietnam (cuz my Daddy fought in the war). Apparantly the other countries were just giant bloated manatees in my deluded little world
In 8th grade my arch nemesis (now one of my bffs) kept flaunting around Escaflowne. I had no idea what it was, and was ready to slug him for his flauntyness. If I'd had the chance I probably would have stolen it from his backpack and drawn moustaches on the cover at the time.
Later that year, I was at hastings with my Dad one day and saw a shelf with something I'd never seen before (they rearranged the shelves) it was something called Ranma 1/2. I thought it looked cute and asked my Dad if I could rent it. He said I could. It was only later that I found the 16+ warning. Although by that point it didn't matter because I kinda realized that when boobs randomly went SPROING out of girl!Ranma's clothes. Right. In front. Of my mother…..... (and yet somehow she let me more!!!)But still, I was kinda intrigued by the show itself (not the boobies, sorry I don't swing that way boys ;) ) and went to school the next day with it still on my mind. I was sitting in art class still thinking about it. I was sitting at the same table as my nemesis (friend) and figured he might know. Finally I just asked if he knew anything about Ranma 1/2. He stared at me with shock. I don't know if it was "wtf why is she talking to me?!" or "wtf she watches naughty anime?!" and said yeah. He started talking to me about it, explained what anime was, and eventually we became friends. I had a crush on him until it turned out he was gay. I should've known considering he watched Sailor Moon too.
Ranma also somehow introduced me to another current bff. I was reading one of the books. She was sitting behind me in history class (she was an acquaintance at the time) I got to a page where Ranma was a girl and full frontal nude. Full page splash. She grabbed the book, held it up for everyone to see yelling BOOOOOOOOOBS. (I got lots of requests to borrow the book after thatfacepalm) and somehow in that twisted, bizarre moment, me and her became best friends. She calls me on the phone in Vegeta voices. it is awesome.

My first contact with anime was in the late 90s. Series like DB, Captain Tsubasa and Mila. After a short time i learned that Manga existed and brought every available DB tanks. In one of them was a advertising for One Piece and that lead to my fandom.
-
First animes i remember enjoying as a kid were Lodoss, Bastard! and Vampire Hunter D, in the early 90's - mostly thanks to a couple of older friends who were big fans.
Then they lent me a few Dragonball Z movies/Ninja Scroll and it felt like i was in Heaven. -
My gateway to anime has been Digimon 2, The Vision of Escaflowne and One Piece. All on German television in 2001-03 and I saw them in that order. For manga its been One Piece and Naruto. I started reading them online one day when I got bored with Enis Lobby drag and Naruto pre timeskip fillers in 07. I think it was literally on the same day. I forgot which one came first.
-
The first series I watched while acknowledging it was anime was Dragon Ball Z. Dubbed, but anyway. Before that there was Pokémon and the infamously horrid dub of Digimon.
The very first subbed anime I watched was One Piece actually, though before that I had also seen some Studio Ghibli movies.
-
The first anime I watched was Pokemon and whatever else happened to be airing on Kids WB back then, like Cardcaptors and Yu-Gi-Oh. I saw a small handful of Dragon Ball Z episodes every now and then on Toonami.
Then I discovered around 2005 that I could find more on the Internet, and here I am.
-
well as sad as it maybe, it was probably naruto.
yes my first anime was dbz, but i had no idea what anime was back then and just thought dbz was part of my many cartoons i watched like dark wing duck, rescue rangers, x-men, ect. and i guess pokemon was a anime as well, but most was just american cartoons and i thought dbz and pokemon were also just american cartoons, had no idea what anime or manga were or that they even existed.
and then when i was around 14 or so i didn't really watch cartoons at all, maybe i saw a show once a week or something, but i was just too busy with life and sports and everything else going on i rarely even watched tv as a whole.
Then sometime late high school or freshman college me and a buddy of mine went and bought out of reminiscense a db/dbz/dbgt collection online and when i had done this i also got curious to see if there were any other cool cartoons like dbz since that had always been my favorite show.
low an behold i heard about naruto. being an american that seems obvious it would be what i heard of first. I just loved it. watched like all 180-190 or whatever episodes where out at the time. was starting to find it crappy towards teh end, but again at that time i had no idea about this thing called "filler"
And well that was my intro into anime. After naruto i then watched either bleach or one piece, then probably avatar, then fma, and the list can then go on to many many other not so great shows. Also it was sometime when i cuaght up with one piece did i learn about what a manga was and started then reading them as well.
funny how i could go some close to 20 years of my life and have no clue of any of this great stuff.
-
Flame of recca was the first I watched, but DBZ was what got me into animes/mangas.
-
Dragonball
One Piece
Saint Seiya
Patlabor
Even though watching Pokemon, Medabots and Digimon when kid (well, 4 to 9 years old, I begin to watch One Piece with 10 years so…), only those two I mentioned made me jump in animes. When I stopped watching One Piece and anime in general it was, sadly, Bleach that made me go back. I left Bleach just after the moment I begin to rewatch One Piece. -
Shouldn't we add "manga" to the thread title?
-
Gateway?
Uh…
Well if 'gateway' includes not knowing it was Japanese animation, then Voltron.
Followed shortly thereafter by Unico.
-
That Dragonball Z episode with the kids in space and Gohan was all like, "WOAH!" and I was all like "why don't I get Cartoon Network anymore?!"
But my first real foray into anime was in 1999 with Gundam Wing.
-
Speed Racer for anime.
Pokemon Special for manga.
-
Toonami
I also remember watching Macross and Voltron.
-
As far as I can think back, technically speaking, my first anime would've probably been Speed Racer
Manga-wise, a friend of mine back in 6th grade lended me a volume of Bo-Bobo (the SJ Adavanced one-shot graphic novel release with all of the Hallelujah Land arc). Then i pick up my first domestic Shonen Jump and that's where I first read the manga for Naruto and One Piece. Of course, I started buying One Piece about a month or two later.
Ahhhh, memories :)
-
The first anime that really resonated with me and trapped me into the fandom was, like much of my generation, "Pokemon". But what I really consider my gateway were those lines of shelves at specialty video rental stores and shops that contained all those interesting-looking VHS tapes of sci-fi wonder that looked so cutting-edge when I was a wee lad. And then I got to see some of that really at the time mind-blowing stuff on Sci-Fi Channel Saturday mornings, stuff like "Akira", "Roujin Z", and "Robot Carnival". I didn't know what they were at first but boy was it a big glimpse of what would become a big part of my later years.
-
the first animes i have watched were from my childhood. mostly mecca. voltes 5, gundam series, daimos, etc… I started really getting into anime early college. yuyu hakusho, dragon ball z, tenchi muyo.
-
This since im also from Portugal, Saint Seya also and Ruroni Kenshin.
im suprised you didn't mention Captain Tsubasa
this was huge in Portugal.
as for me, Lupin III, Urusei Yatsura, Future Boy Conan, Captain Tsubasa and Dragonball are the firsts one I recall.
-
Wait. Scratch my earlier post. In the most likely order that I can think of…
Speed Racer (had a VHS and watched it a lot)
Digimon (One of the movies that was in theatres; also watched the TV series before school)
Cardcaptor Sakura (used to watch it before school)
Zoids (watched it before school)
Pokémon
Dragon Ball (the original series when it was airing on CN)
Rurouni Kenshin (on Toonami, watched it every day when I came home from school)
Dragon Ball ZEdit: Some others that came to mind...
Grappler Baki: The Ultimate Fighter (watched it when it aired on Encore Action)
Tokyo Babylon (same as above)
Fist of the North Star (same as above)I'm kind of scared at the amount of shoujo I watched as a kid.
-
Dominon: Tank Police, Vampire Hunter D, Akira, Record of Lodoss War, and the Sci-Fi channel in general back when it kicked ass.
10 years ago those were the standard introduction for everyone. Strange to see thats not the case anymore.
If you want to be technical, it would be Voltron and Robotech and Mysterious Cities of Gold and Maya the Bee and such, but I didn't know those were anime at the time.
-
gatchaman/g-force
Some other really old mecha animes but don't remember.
DBZ
pokemon
sailormoon
digimon
yugioh
dragonball gt
shaman king
zoids
