The Davy back fight is my least favourite arc.
Favorite Arc/Saga
-
-
Sky Piea all the way, the other ones were entertaining sure but that arc felt like a true adventure.
-
Against the norm I think but my clear favourite is the Baratie arc. Though I might be a bit biased because there was a hell of a lot of Sanji in it :D.
Seriously though, great arc IMO. -
My favourite arc is the last, The Battle of Marineford, but the best Miniarc for me it's Robin story (the betrayal reasons + Ohara)
-
Baroque works still reigns supreme in terms of enjoyability
Skypeia is however the arc most central to what One Piece is about.
-
CP9 was the most enjoyable arc for me. Especially loved the big plot twist. Blocknose was awesome. And there was Sogeking!
-
In this order…
CP9
War and Rescue
East Blue
Thriller Bark
Baroque Works
Skypiea

Looking through the thread again and a question popped into my mind.
Personality wise, what's the difference between Akainu and Rob Lucci? I was thinking about it, and the two are pretty similar. I can't think of any, but I could just be too tired to think.

We still know only very little about Akainu. Yes, his basic ideals are similar too RL's but I believe both (yes both) are only half developed.
-
Even though I can't vote I still think Baroque works was the best. My reasoning? Baroque works had one of the best plots of one piece's arcs. The ending was epic and Croc was a great villain completely bounded to rule over Alabasta.
Skypeia had the same factors here which is why its in second place for me. Eneru was a pimp cane dipped in awesome sauce, and all the main fights was basically good.

Rob Lucci is supposed to like blood, and killing people. For him, those two things seemed to be above justice. That's not the case for Aka Inu.
Rob Lucci was poorly written during his fight against Luffy. I don't know why he was so emotionless.
-
CP9 Saga for me. For me, this arc really showed the SH crew's potential. Kalifa's way hot too :))

Akainu's better written.

So Lucci is a sadist, while Akainu is an extremist…right? Extremist seems like the right word. That seems right.
@Cyan:
Akainu's better written.
Can you explain why? It's not like I don't agree, but I'm having a hard time explaining to myself why outside of "He has cool magma powers".
Was it because Akainu actually injured people while Lucci failed to harm anyone in Enies Lobby? Is hand to hand combat boring/fight dragged?
Lucci fights to kill. Akainu fights for "Justice". If "fighting just to kill" is bland I could agree.
Just say that's it if I'm in the ballpark.

Yep that's pretty much it. If you want a better answer, think Lucci mentions it when all the cp9 are gathered and Spandam brags about fame or something and they just shrug it off. Saying blah blah kill blah blah more killing and so on.
To lazy to look for the manga chapter, sorry. But yeah your pretty much in the ball park.
-
I pretty much like all arcs and I say each arc has its strengths and weaknesses but I'll go into detail another time maybe…
Right now it's still the CP9 .... the best part is from Water 7 ... things were just too intense... from losing their ship, Usopp leaving the crew... getting framed, Robin "betraying" them.... just so much things involved... So many new things added into the story ... and the ending was very pleasant as well...
new crewmate, new ship, new secrets, new world, new bounties... Ah, very fun for me indeed. xD
-
with East Blue I was introduced to the universe, logical that it took getting used to,
and only in part of Arlong is that I start to like the mangaon the part of Alabaster, was the first serious challenge of luffy
and addressed the DF with more weight, not counting Crocodile (groovy villain)already in the part of CP9, I did not like, I thought oda wanted to "prove" something with all those uninterruptible fights
TB was boring, a quickly arc (not like ID) but at the same time slow (although the end was beautiful)
SA was the despair / excitement of the fans
with the "Super Novas"
and the introduction of kizaru
(Besides deepening the general history of OP)ID + WAR
everyone was waiting for the damn war
but before we had a "snack" that was ID
that was fast and renew the joy of nostalgic fans of crocodile, buggy, Bon Clay
and introduce Magellans (a power house in my opinion) in the world of OPthe war was "misused"
perhaps can be blamed on having so much characters
that oda did not succeed to focus on each of the characters
(But again the final was incredible)but for me "Skypiea" was amazing
something that lies between the first serious adventure
and the fight rampant that was Water 7 and ELmay seem slow because of Norland's flashback,
but
ENEL as a villain is amazing.
And besides, all that mystical world of clouds
is unique (and think that all this was introduced by a simple Childreen Book) -
You know, I've enjoyed all of the One Piece arcs, but I have to say the war was my least favorite. Don't know why, didn't hate it or anything, just I liked all the other ones better.
-

Maybe because Luffy didn't have his usual crew? The Marineford + ID arc will always stand out because of that I think. The only point in time where Luffy was not with his crew. I daresay I'm impressed with how Oda-sensei handled it. Without his usual bunch of characters he made a very interesting arc. It's not so easy to deal with XXXX amount of characters and use them at the right time.
I wonder how this kind of arc (where your usual main characters aren't there) would be handled by say.. Kishimoto-san or Kubo-san XD …. but then again they are good at introducing interesting but useless characters to the story.. it's rather sad.
-
Hmmm. I enjoyed all the arcs so picking a favorite is a tough choice. I would say it is between the Skypiea arc and the CP9 arc.
The Skypiea arc had enjoyable fights and Eneru was a great villain. I also felt a sense of adventure at the start of the arc when they were trying to get to skypiea. The Knock-Up Stream was a very creative idea.
The CP9 arc was also very enjoyable. Luffy going into gear three was awesome. Plus, Franky was introduced in this arc.
My favorite mini arc was definitely the davy back fight arc. Luffy in an afro = awesome.
-
This is tricky because of the inevitable recency bias. I mean, the CP9 saga ended, what, 4 years ago? And the Skypiea arc was ~7 years ago. Hard to remember each detail without rereading 100 chapters or so. However, I think the CP9 saga has the edge over Skypiea and the war, but not by much. Here's how I break it down:
Story / Plot
Although the war will have a far greater impact in the One Piece world than any other arc, story wise it was basically one gigantic battle. No real development for Akainu or BB's re-emergence. And the fact the Mugiwara were on the sidelines hurts a bit. But make no mistake, the events of the War are more significant than any of the other arcs at this point.
However, there were far better plot elements in the CP9 arc (CP9 itself, Robin leaving the crew, Usopp's mutiny, Tom/Franky/Iceburg's backstory, officially declaring war w/ the government, Luffy's gears, I could on and on …. ). Skypiea was also well thought out, but not to the extent W7 was. You can see that Oda proved his mettle with Skypiea, and then took it to the next level with W7.
Villains
Eneru was a great villain. Nothing made me smile more than watching Luffy shove a gigantic gold ball down his throat. He was also developed as the perfect foil for Luffy. Eneru against anyone else would be very tough. I think he'd take out CP9 pretty much by himself. His DF power is no joke. He was custom made for Luffy, who was basically his natural nemesis. His character remains the standard.
However, I think CP9 takes this too. Although Eneru was superior as the "end boss", I think the CP9 as a foil for all of Mugiwara (versus those priests or whatever) better served the story. It was also the first time that Mugiwara had to step up significantly to have a chance of winning. Add in their motive (the still mysterious "weapon") only adds to their credibility. There's a reason the Mugiwara's bounty effectively tripled after defeating them.
This is a relatively weak spot for the ID + war arc. There was no truly well developed villain in the whole arc. I guess Magellan was a decent character, but he wasn't all that interesting personally. I suppose kicking Luffy's ass deserves some cred, but at that point Luffy winning would have been a plot hack. This is Impel Down, the most indestructible fortress in the world. The warden better be a badass. Blackbeard and his crew will be formidable later (as will Akainu), but this arc served more as a introduction than anything else.
Character Development
I think CP9 takes this one pretty easily, for many of the same reasons its storyline was the best. We learned a lot about Usopp, Robin, and Luffy from this arc. Sanji and Zoro weren't exactly side characters either. It was Luffy's first true test as captain dealing with the Usopp situation, and a test of Mugiwara's mettle trying to rescue Robin. And the teamwork required to rescue Robin was pretty awesome. After the crew left W7, no reader had any doubts the crew grew as a team like their bounty.
Skypiea was awesome in showcasing the guts and never say die attitude of the Mugiwara. They took a lot of hits, but kept on coming. I think Luffy had Eneru beat 2 or 3 times before finally taking him out. Nevertheless, not as much as W7. And the War arc didn't really showcase the Mugiwara much except Luffy. However, Luffy grew in a different way, as evidenced in the next section…
Drama
The War took this one hands down. There's a reason why first printings for the climax of this arc was 1mil+.
Skypiea, for all its fun and backstory, I feel wasn't as dramatic as W7 or the War was. I mean, ultimately it was about finding peace between two warring tribes. Not much was at stake for the Mugiwara as a crew. Sure they had an adventure, and Enel's crap made things personal, but the arc wasn't nearly as high stakes as the W7 or War arc were.
The W7 arc wasn't exactly boring . Saving Robin had plenty of drama. Burning the WG flag after Robin begs the crew to save her was a high point in the arc. Giving the Going Merry a Viking funeral, Franky's recruitment, Usopp's apology were all dramatic moments. I thought at the time how I couldn't believe how much drama Oda can drum up w/o people either sacrificing themselves or getting killed. The Water 7 arc was a gigantic piece of story telling, and you can feel the emotion in some of key moments during the arc. I don't think the distance between W7 and the War is as big as some make it out to be.
But still, it doesn't match the drama of the Marineford War. I see ID as a prelude to the actual battle, so I don't hold the lack of drama there against the arc as a whole. But what else can be said that hasn't already? The stakes have never been higher. The strongest pirate in the world against the WG. Mega-pirates and mega-marines on either side. The introduction of Luffy as a major force in the pirating world. And ultimately, the deaths of Ace and WB and the victory of the WG. Oda never killed anyone, and no one thought he was ever going to. When he pulled that trigger (and man, was that a cannon), you had a recipe for one of the best deaths in my recent manga memory. I mean, when was the last time a mangaka had an arc that lasted over 12 months, that ended with the 'good guys' losing? Badly. The WB pirates are in tatters, Luffy is mentally broken, Blackbeard has succeeded in his ultimate plan (using the WG on the way), and the world will never be the same. The War arc had everything a manga arc needs to have.
Overall
So I don't necessarily think it's a 3-1 victory for CP9. It's just that CP9 did the "other" things better than the War arc did. Oda decided to go for more drama and shocking developments than character/villain development, which ended up working just fine by the way. It's just that when judging an arc on the whole, everything needs to be looked at carefully and equally. And I look forward to Fishman Island in a couple weeks
PS: Thriller Bark easily brings up the rear of the six choices in the poll. I ultimately have it CP9, War, Skypiea, BW, East Blue, TB
-
I love the enies lobby arc and the thriller bark arc =D
-

It's strange, my first time reading it, Lucci came off as this untouchable hyper-competant killing machine, and that was intimidating enough by itself that I thought he was a great villian.
But since then, especially when compared to all the other big leaguers recently revealed, Lucci seems bland. His strength isn't anything anymore, and he's not axe crazy enough for his personality to carry him.
I guess he was really a necessary stepping stone, now overshadowed by other villians. But at the same time, I admire Oda for not going all-in and making him the generic psycho killer type, and instead making him in all actuality a realistic character. He likes to kill, but its not like he's friggin insane or anything. He just happens to love his work.
-
CP9 and War and Rescue are having pretty close fight. I think I like War and Rescue better because that is the arc where there are lots of names that are very epic. I like moments where super-awesome characters are introduced, such as when Rayleigh is introduced, that is super-exciting. And who will forget the bloody Akainu and the beast that is Magelan, really awesome. And Jimbei, very awesome character, can't wait 'til Luffy becomes powerful enough to recruit him. And Whitebeard, never seen anyone manlier in any manga than Whitebeard. He's a freakin monster yet very likable. It took so many to kill him and yet he is still standing even at death. No one can bring down the Whitebeard! So yeah, I like the War and Rescue arc a lot because we got names, we got deaths, and we got Whitebeard! They even put the juicy part of Blackbeard gaining double-DF, really epic.
-
For me it's Skypiea. It was the first adventure that was worth the "Grand Line hype" that was going on in East Blue. Ships falling from the clear sky, compasses pointing up, Knock Up Stream, flying Going Merry, ancient stories, cloud oceans, golden city, gods owned with rubber, giant Luffy outline in the sky….I can go on :D
Anyway, I hope that the New World will be equally awesomely messed up.
-
for me was the best thrilerpark beacuse of thhe fight whit moria and the end whit kuma and zoro i was shocked when i saw him and what he did for hes crow and LUFFY.he's also my favourites character.

A friend pointed out, we enjoy the parts of the story that have an embodied villain or collective of villains that we like/identify with.
I loved rob lucci, I saw him and thought 'this is despair'. W7/EL is therefore my most favourite arc.
Thought Enel was cheap, overhyped and overplayed. The only time I saw him as a monster and felt momentary fear is when he revived himself.
Admittedly, some people here like Gecko Moria, whom I hate passionately. I thought he was a pathetic excuse for a villain, but I tried to enjoy the adventure in the arc. Still, TB is easily the most useless arc in my opinion - even though it showcased my second fav character outside of the SHs - Bartholomew Kuma. OP could have easily done without it. -
how about the whole isle of woman arc why isnt it part of the poll?
-
@¡Sanji:
how about the whole isle of woman arc why isnt it part of the poll?
Because IMO it was something like prologue before whole War and Rescue arc, hmpf.
-
@¡Sanji:
how about the whole isle of woman arc why isnt it part of the poll?
because then we would need the option to choose other prologue arcs like jaya or water seven
why cant i vote? is it something to do with being a new member? i would have gone with east blue, just because of the arlong park conflict. i have read it over and over and i never seems to lose its emotional impact. skypiea is incredible too. its probably the best arc, but not my personal favourite.
-
I can't vote. :( I R Sad.
Anyway, I loved East Blue, it was very quick and showed a lot of development. Very good how Oda did that. The manga is 3x better than the anime, East Blue story that is.
But my favorite has to be the CP9 arc, what a twist. I read the manga before I watched the anime, and damn, when I saw Lucci, Kaku, Blueno and Kalifa reveal themselves…..O_o Then you have the Rokushiki techniques...DAMN!
-
I'd probably have to say the Baroque Works saga. Also, isn't Thiller Bark part of the Whitebeard War Saga?
-
@S.C.:

No and I have no idea how you can even tie it together.
A lot of important elements to the story developed in Thriller Bark. I didn't like the arc much, but this AMV made me change my mind:

cp9 was my favourite on my first read through. the epicness of the "shoot that flag" moment will never get old. but through my many rereads, other arcs have developed into my favourite, which i tend to read much more than cp9.
btw im really feeling your avatar. just started reading that comic because of how much i loved scott pilgrim vs the world. such a shame it flopped in the box office…. -

When I read the manga from the beginning, many things I didn't see as epic changed for me. It is entirely different than the anime, the manga is the TRUE One Piece-though we all know that now, most of us. I didn't really get watery eyes when Nami's past was show in the anime, but damn the manga was pretty harsh for some reason, so awesome how much emotion was put in that area-the reason why I love East Blue so much.
-
I loved the Arabasta/Baroque Works and Thriller bark arcs the most. Mostly because these arcs aren't too extreme. More light hearted that alot of the other arcs.
The War and Rescue arc is really good so far. It's really surprising to see Luffy team up with people I would have never thought he had before. Also Sanji landing on Kamabakka Kingdom. Priceless.
-
If I could re-vote, I would say East Blue.Back then we didn't have the new awesome crew members, but the fights were epic. Ever since they joined the Devil Fruit Line, I think fights miss something. Just my opinion…

itll prolly get worse for u in the NW lol

I really like the enies lobby arc (in the anime )
-
My fave arc is Marineford. I just love it, the fights, the epic scenes, the plot twists… and the awesome characters, of course!
My second fave is Water 7/Enies Lobby ( I just can't seperate them).
Third is Sabaody. So 2/3 of my fave arcs belong to War and Rescue arc :3
-
"Voters: 1001. You may not vote on this poll"
Why can't i vote?? :S -
Saobody and Water7 were epic.
-
I think that I gotta go with the War Arc.
It just had this epic feel to it, like everything since Romance Dawn had been building up towards that story. -
The Skypeia, Marineford, and East Blue/Romance Dawn arcs were definitely mah faves.
-
It was realy hard to choose in my opinion every part of OP is awsome.
-
Why cant i vote for any poll? :( Anyways i'd say Baroque Works, its the arc that first got me into OP
-
While Marineford was great, I gotta go with Sabody. It introduced tons of new characters and it had probably one of the more emotional and shocking moments in OP history, nothing beats it in my opinian
-
Why cant i vote for any poll? :( Anyways i'd say Baroque Works, its the arc that first got me into OP
Because of the character tournament new members can't vote. Something about preventing people from making duplicate accounts to cheat…
I guess just actively participating and maybe PMing a mod about it might solve the problem.Anyway, I'd still say Skypiea, followed by Baroque Works, Sabaody and Water 7 (I really dislike Enies Lobby for some reason)
-
So there are still people who can't vote?
Anyway, I really liked Skypeia, even though I was a little annoyed by Wiper until the latter part of Enel's 'game'. I liked Enel, the dial technology, the whole island-in-the-sky thing, the 'ordeals', etc etc etc.
Sabaody's in second place, because of the 11 Rookies Rayleigh, finally they're (almost) halfway through, bubble tech, and of course that bit when Kuma sent them all flying. Baroque Works is third because of Crocodile's organization. BON-CHAN~
-

Once your account meets a few (secret) requirements, you'll be automatically switched over to being able to vote. Simple measures to discourage dupe creation. It's obviously still possible to dupe, but when we find anyone doing it, we aren't nice.
Anyway, if you're even moderately active, it won't take long before you'll be able to vote. I'd ask that new members be patient with the system.
