Dragon Ball Z was actually the unofficial title of volume 17-42 of DragonBall, only difference is in other countries the series kept it's original title on the book covers. They were still meant as DBZ. (At least in Sweden that's how it played down)
Chapter 580: "End of War" Discussion

-
@People:
I know all that you are saying exept the NA part (too bad for them), then what? It does not change the fact that the time skips in Dragon ball have nothing special, the characters just grow up with the years, it's the most normal time-skip which can be done. However, in the interview, Oda seems to point a particular type of technique.
Hey, I was just pointing it out because it seems to a common misconception that DBZ is when we first see Goku as an adult and also that DBZ suddenly takes away all the exploring and adventuring you saw in DB, when in fact that stuff happens before the end of DB.
Anyway, on topic, I think this is just a language issue. I don't think there's a "special technique" for showing characters ageing; you merely timeskip, whether that be by years at a time or by showing a collage of images as they go from X age to Y age.
-
I know they're not shown to be anything but nice and carefree unless their friends are hurt or in danger, but Lucky Roo did kill for the first time in One Piece, and then the crew took out Higuma's troupe of bandits. Shanks could've easily knocked everyone there out with Haki without killing anyone. But these people died anyway (or at least one of them. You don't recover from a bullet in the head.). The Straw Hats have been shown to spare the lives of their enemies whenever possible.
Contrary to what most people appear to think, I believe that Shanks wasn't a Yonkou yet 10 or 11 years ago, when they visited Luffy's island.
He most likely didn't even had complete control over his haki yet, so he couldn't use it to knockout the bandits. So he only was capable to use it once, when he protected Luffy from being eaten by the sea monster, and yet Luffy wasn't affected by it.
I see the change in the crew members' appearance since then as a clear indicative that their strength has grown very much…
Which brings me back to the topic about my belief that when Blackbeard inflicted the cut who left those scars in Shanks face, Shanks also still wasn't so powerful as he is today. And the same applies to the fight between Shanks and Mihawk.

just read this from greg
I was prepared to sign off the CW5 interview as one of the most boring and meandering interviews Oda has lead in the CW series, (just bbehind Amano), which is why I got bored halfway through and skimmed Oda's questions, avoiding discussion.
Last time I'll do that -_-
There's a teacher at school who I discuss OP with. He's a maniac-level fan like myself. Sometimes 30 minutes go by in the teacher's room and we'll still be talking about the most recent chapter. Anyway, he just got CW4 (the shitty stores around us barely stock it) and he texts me at 11 at night, 'DID YOU READ THE COLOR WALK INTERVIEW!?'
Of course I did…..right?
Apparently not. Upon closer inspection, Yanase throws a question back at Oda after discussing 'no matter how much time passes, the characters don't age or change'. Oda says he admires an author that can do that because he isn't sure how to do it himself.
He elaborates, he mentions that A CERTAIN SERIES (probably DB) that was influetial on him used a certain technique to help its characters change over short period of time and that he's been eager to do something similar for a long time and is almost ready to follow suit.
TIME-SKIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII-PUH
so theres a db to dbz time skip coming
would make sense considering how long it really should take for some of the members to come back
Still running with that, eh?
-
A CERTAIN SERIES that was influetial on him used a certain technique to help its characters change over short period of time and that he's been eager to do something similar for a long time and is almost ready to follow suit.
Why it must be time skip?? itu could be anything. I think it wont be time skip. In some manga, a wounded character that absent long enough in battle usually getting stronger when they are recover.
ex:
goku in db, he getting much more stronger when recover just before facing captin ginyu? -
That was a hoax…
-
@Corson:
That was a hoax…
Are you talking about Greg's mention of the Color Walk 5 interview? Did he confirm it was a hoax, if that is what you were refering to?
-
If Shanks turns out bad, his epicness would go beyond the scale!
Yeah haha. I don't see it happening unless hell freezes over, but if Oda near the end of OP revealed Shanks despite his diplomatic and friendly happy-go-lucky behavior to be some kind of evil overmind, that would be bombshells
-

Good reviews. The interviews were the best thing ever!!! XD
The Shanks turncoat thing would be awesome, but I believe I can only tolerate a certain amount of mindfucking. With all the awesome plot twists still to come and all the unfinished plot lines opened up, making Shanks another villain would rape my brain to an aneurism.
There is also the fact that already it looks like OP will never end. Adding another story arc or major group battle means another 30-50 chapters at least.
Regarding the timeskip, I don't think there will be one that lasts any more than a few weeks. I think the technique Oda is doing could very well be having all the Strawhats go through an insane ordeal in a short amount of time, just like Luffy. Hell if it is anything like Luffy's, who will most likely visibly age after this arc into the guy in that profile shot in Romance Dawn and be way stronger, then we should expect drastic changes and growth from all the other Strawhat's as well. But a 10 year timeskip like some people brought up? Nah that's not happening. Robin would be nearly 40, Franky would be well past 40 and all the sillyness from the Strawhats would start to be weird and unfunny. The crew is simply getting stronger, and we will see some apparel or equipment changes related to the ordeal and island they came back from. The only one that will change physically is Luffy in my opinion, the rest are fine as they are and shouldn't age more than a year.
My belief is that the few following chapters will deal with Luffy's recovery and how much it will last, as well as the possible physical repercutions, among them his premature aging, and then I'm not really sure. I'm hoping the next chapters after that are focused on the Strawhats. I don't know maybe chapters that deal with two or three strawhats at a time, and round off their stories and how they get back to Rayleigh in Shabondy. Or maybe the story will continue in Shabondy and as the Strawhats return to Luffy there is a 2-5 chapter short story flashback dealing with their particular ordeal.
What we know for certain is that we will at least get glimpses of what the other Strawhats went through as well. But the time is ripe for the reunion and unless the story will continue without the Strawhats further it's impossible to keep doing the coverstory thing cause it's too slow.
-
Yeah I really got a sense of weirdness how the war just suddenly ends despite all the insanity right beforehand. I wonder if Coby's words also contributed to Sengoku's consideration, since Shanks was acknowledging and commemorating Coby's actions, while even agreeing directly with them.
…
I only felt this weirdness since I ended up re-reading the entire war arc, starting from the newkama/prisoners/everyone all escaping from Magellan, etc. It was freaking amazing. Because, before that, I get lost in the low qual pictures at times; plus there's the whole weekly break that insanely interrupts connectivity and flow. Once re-read, all the reasons and motives and aspirations and natures and thought processes of every person becomes so much more clear. It's infinitely more enticing than believing stuff like, "Wow they're showing Crocodile's face again. This seems rather cliche. The anime's inanity must be rubbing off on the author. Wait, what did Croc have to do with anything, again? Ho hum, time to skim through to the major plot developments anyway because I've forgotten about all the glue between characters. Damn, it all must be that crappily drawn anime's fault!"
(The anime suffers from its own much worse flow interruptions, and even flat out belligerent stylistic choice blemishes on top of that, making it impossible to watch without audio/video editing the entire series yourself. And I used to prefer the show; so right now is what has led to my only recently perceived profundity regarding re-reading chapters. ... That said, I think the anime could actually be pretty amazing during the war, considering the recent scene with Blackbeard and Shiryuu, and the fact that they always become incredible artists/animators during key scenes -- scenes of which would occur like every 5 seconds, if you've come to the realizations that I did during my re-reading. It all comes down to pacing and emotion and being able to portray them accurately reverse knock on wood.)
Without any of those character/situation connections, I fall back on blindly accepting Oda's decision to do something, rather than seeing any alternatives.
Moral here: if you haven't re-read this arc or don't have a good memory, you should probably read a marathon. It even has the major benefit of being able to contribute actually sound plot and character analyses here.
-

Yeah. And a little prediction, seeing as how Oda likes to build up to cliffhangers every chapter, maybe a small (3 month-ish) timeskip and we get back to Luffy recovering, some world shots of how things have gone, and last page of the chapter will be a spread of all the other SHs suddenly appearing, all looking a bit different but mostly the same and awesome. That's something I could see Oda do.
-

ex:
goku in db, he getting much more stronger when recover just before facing captin ginyu?I just think the way ODa been going with this the crew aren't strong enough
and the way hes set up this new chaos which will take time to happen with bb he could easily create a time jump of a year maybe 2 luffy just waiting unwilling to move from SA until his crew come back and it took months as a group it could take longer seperately -
I hear a lot of people say that the Straw Hats aren't strong enough to enter the New World.
What exactly is "strong enough"? Do the Crew Members have to be Shichibukai Level?
Similar to entering the Grand Line, maybe there will not be a timeskip and the Straw Hats will gradually become stronger after entering the New World.
-
I think straw hats already are strong enough, otherwise kid, urogue, etc. wouldn't be strong enough too to enter the new world
-
I also think that the SH are strong enough for the new world. They are just not strong enough to fight admirals. And for what we've seen in this war, the new world captains are not incredibly good. I doubt that all the NW captains that we've seen can fight an admiral isn't it. Or they would won already.
-
The difference between the SH and every other pirate is the way in which they are FORCED to grow stronger.
Luffy's bounty isn't really worth 300 million, it's more like 600 million, and no he's not ready to take on the Red Line.
Kidd wants to sail and become PK, but everyone considers him a rookie.
Luffy wants to be PK, but along the way he leaves the impression that "hey, this guy could actually do it."There's a tremendous difference in the outcomes/goals of the two. Even if they are equally powerful further down the line, it is Luffy's duty to beat Akainu to a bloody heap of lava puddle, Kidd just has to avoid him.
-
I predict there'll be a time skip.
I predict there won't be a time skip.No matter what, I win…

Yes…they are ready. You think Shanks, Whitebeard etc were elite pirates when they entered the New World? No one goes into a new place and is instantly the strongest there. Of course he's not going to be able to fight an admiral, but in this war Luffy did a lot more than any of the Non-whitebeard NW pirates. He could definitely enter the New World and be a mid tier there.
Think of it this way...All of the other supernovas were going to the new world if Luffy hadn't f'd it up for them. Luffy is probably either the strongest (Most likely considering all his feats that aren't known to the general public) supernova or the second strongest, so it makes no sense that he wouldn't be ready for the new world. Every single arc the Straw hats face a new opponent who is a little bit stronger than them, I don't see how this will change in the New World.
-
I want to see Shanks fight Kaidou and the mysterious 4th Yonkou fight Akainu.
-
@Audity: Hell, I feel like a re-read of the entire series would do a lot of people on this forum good, myself included.
-
I'm hoping there is a quick recap of the SH meeting in SA, and agreeing to wait there until Luffy recovers. (or wait somewhere else)
Then a 1-2 year time skip. (period it takes for Luffy to recover)
Heh, I guess I want to see Luffy as a 19 or 20 year old.
-
I hear a lot of people say that the Straw Hats aren't strong enough to enter the New World.

Or close to it since Luffy won't be getting a huge crew of fodder.
I think a lot of ppl underestimate having to take out a bunch of fodder pirates and then fighting the super strong pirates in that crew. The SHs usually don't do that and I'd expect something along those lines to be in store for them in the NW

goku in db, he getting much more stronger when recover just before facing captin ginyu? When anticipating the war during the trip between ID and MJ, I thought a timeskip wouldn't be realistic (we already know the SBS info about Luffy's age, if my memories are correct).
Now I'm almost convince next chapter will be a timeskip of 1-12 months. Real epic is on his way.
Given the current configuration, I somehow feel that Oda will show the SH already together. We'll learn their meeting and part of their solo-story by flashback. We'll learn what happened in the submarine via Luffy flashback, according to what people told him once he woke up.
I guess some fellow member of APF already spoke about it. I'm not up to date concerning latest arguments.
-
I hope Oda doesn't use the time skip to set the supernovas up as more formidable opponents, something to the effect of "they've already been fighting in the New World for 6 months, 1 year etc."
-

Kidd and the other supernovas are gonna face some serious foes down the line. Since Luffy is allied with many crews right now he is gonna have a lot of friends. It would be interesting seeing Kidd go head to head with the likes of Duma and Squardo. It would be good for the Anime to do filler episodes of the Supernovas facing the New World crews and winning. Until we know the others dreams we can't tell who is gonna be Luffy's main rival.

How bout a thousand year time skip and Children in the future are hearing the story of Pirate Emperor Luffy.
-
How bout a thousand year time skip and Children in the future are hearing the story of Pirate Emperor Luffy.
While I could see this happening further down the line, I don't think that Luffy will ever be called Pirate Emperor. Remember that Luffy does not wish to rule anything, he just wants to be free.
Also keep in mind that the children of the future may or may not hear about the story of Luffy, as it could very well be that there are other more current heroes after the Timeskip, so the story could focus on them instead of Luffy, who has been dead for a thousand years.
Regardless, I'm sure when it does happen we will get to see a thriving technological society, and it's something that we all have been looking forward to after the inevitable but brief timeskip. It's too bad we won't be seeing the any of the characters we've seen up till now though. Ah, I'm sure the next batch will be even better. Do it Oda!

which chapter is the one that luffy has wings?

That is the same as Roger, yet he was called Pirate King..

I don't believe the irony of that post could have been any clearer. Evidently people didn't get it.

Probably. They actually do that quite a lot:
- Buggy had a fodder crew, it was dealt with quite swiftly by luffy's buggy bomb bounce
- Kuro had a fodder crew, some of them were beaten and some of them were just scared to death
- Don krieg had a fodder crew, although it was taken out by Mihawk
- Arlong had a crew with fodder members, they were taken out by luffy when he swung that cow thing around
- Baroque works was filled with fodder members who were not really taken out by the strawhats, although Zoro beat a bunch of them on whiskey peak
- Enel had his priests(not the 4 special dudes, but those goaty guys) but they were mostly taken out by the Shandians
-Moria had his zombie army, the strawhats fought those before fighting the top tiers of his crew
So even though they have not beaten all the fodder themselve, the strawhats have dealt with quite some crews with fodder and top tiers. Off course new world fodder might be a lot stronger then its grandline counterpart, so a strength increase would be nice, but I dont think its neccesairy.

If this were to happen, I am not sure why it would be "filler" material as these encounters would be very important events in the New World.
I'm still not certain that there is going to be a huge timeskip. I wouldn't be surprised if Oda decides to focus on each Straw Hat crewmember and devote several chapters to each one.

You obviously don't get what I'm talking about. Bringing up East Blue villains and not even adding in the part of them fighting fodder.
I'm talking about them fighting a crew of fodder(actually fighting) on their own and then fighting the strong fighters of that crew(captain included). You just waste time with examples that don't reply. Closest thing that counts is the SHs raid on EL fighting fodder marines and then having to fight CP9 but ofcourse they had a whole lot of help.
-

If that would be present in anime to pull some time and not in the manga that would still be filler. But if Oda would control such fills they, I assume, would not be fillers.

Yes I understand, I am just saying that I would think Supernovas defeating New World Pirates, especially if it were those who participated in the Marineford Arc would be in the Manga and thus not filler.

A time skip would have potential but remember this what Gol D rogers crew went through. I'm guessing the entire straw hat crew would have to go through a lot of development and it would be a while. But I don't mind as long it turns out to be really good and gives a lot more depth to the characters.
Also, it's about time Oda reveals more about dragon. And the will of D. Gol knew what it was, he told WB but he died as well. So Im thinking is there anybody else left in the world who knows it? -

So at least Rayleigh knows about it. -

So at least Rayleigh knows about it.This post makes me wonder how a man that possess such dangerous knowledge as Silvers Rayleigh could operate an illegal enterprise right underneath the World Government's nose?
Not to mention the fact that this enterprise allows Pirates to gain access to the New World and potentially find One Piece.
In some ways, it just seems that Rayleigh is just as dangerous as any scholar that existed on Ohara and therefore more dangerous than Dragon.

Rayleigh is one of the most powerful and cunning pirates alive, he can probably toy with the WG pretty easily.
If anyone outside of the inner circle of the WG knows anything, it's Dragon. And he has an army to back it up. -

i'm hoping for the opposite. i hope we see the majority of the supernovas utterly beaten and their crews dead as they got taken over by the emperors and other more powerful crews like blackbeards crew and probably doflamingo's crew.
-
wanna bet chapter 581 will start like this…
2 years later.......
Luffy and Law are sparring (or you can say having their 999 matchup since the war)......

I believe the time skip might occur on chapter 600. Remember that every 100 chapter, something "epic" happens.

Did you just make S-Cry-Ed reference? Because it sounds vaguely similar.
-

Yeah, since we would all love to read a series about a 14-month-old baby battling vicious pirates.
Ehh, wait, that'd be pretty cool. Katekyo Hitman Reborn pulled it off, too.
