EDIT: Hmm, now that I think of it, Garp may not have haki and may just be insanely strong that his punches hurt Luffy's rubber body.
his punch hurt the immaterial phoenix form of marco.. no doubt it's haki

Not the least of which Luffy with wings on Volume 27 with one eye closed.
Heh. I still remember that coming back to attention during that brief period we were trying to figure out what was on Hancock's back, and also speculating that she might be Luffy's mother.
That cover, along with 25, will end up being one of those covers we see years from now and interpret an ENTIRELY different way.
The one with PWNgoat right dead center in it? With Shanks, Buggy, Luffy and Blackbeard all around him? (and some other guy faded in the background…)
Then by 'beginning' do you mean chapter 1? That's where we got our first glimpse of it.
It's not going to be some unexplained 'thing'.
Any clever reader knows that Skypiea is, without question, the most important arc YET in terms of Oda's overall story.
There are ideas, themes and entire blocks of history that will all come back to Skypiea.

i do find it funny whenever i hear people call skypiea one crap long filler arc and totally pointless. even up to shabondy arc people still saying that. not sure if still going on about it now.
we learned so much stuff there, or more like most of the hugely important things in the story right now were first introduced there or hinted at there. major events changed around it. i mean the going merry got its broken spine from the events at jaya while trying to find skypiea. their money from skypiea lead to many outcomes. weapons were advanced greatly from skypian dials. we learn more about roger and crew, and the poneglyphs. and more i'm sure coudl think of it felt like taking time.
and then now the even bigger thing of we now learn that most likely mantra was all a form of haki and not just some mysterious unique ability to those few poeple. anyone who still in in quesiton to mantra and thinks it ain't haki is just being a moron. if the boa sisters back then didn't convince you yet, i don't know how you an' tbe after coby basically said word for word what that little girl said all the time
Lets not forget the sheer craziness backhistory that Enel's coverstory brough to us afterwards, either. Skypeia was HUGELY important, just a lot of people didn't realize it… at the time... for 2 reasons.
1-Its away from the Marines, so the "real world" has no idea it happened. So people treat it like filler, particularly since no new Strawhats came from it. (Tough in hindsight all the setup for Water 7 was immense and subtle)
2-At the time, it was THE longest arc in the series, the most time spent in one place so the sense of length was disproportionate. Barouque works was similar length, but it covered multiple islands and had the 3 volume Chopper sub story in the middle.
Since then we had Water 7 which was longer still, and Thriller Bark which was a decent size, and of course the great war. Skypeia is no longer 1/3 of the entire series, but now its just about 1/7, and increasingly more and more just becoming another piece of the bigger picture.
I 100% agree that Skypiea is VERY important to the story. So when i read ppl saying that Skypiea arc was useless, i have a good laugh. Void century, Shandora civilization and their fight to protect the poneglyph, which caused their decline, lunar civilization who installed in bilca, Skypiea, Jaya and probably more; all of this is connected like a puzzle and this is the plot who interests me the most.
I didnt noticed how the 27 cover is suspicious, good find.
However, each time i read this part, i still very surprised how they know about devil fruit, they know it very well. Wiper even has some sea stone… This is very intriguing.
Maybe that Haki means Mantra, but they know a lot about the blue sea, I don't see why they would change the name. Devils fruit are devil fruits after all. So why Haki shoud be Mantra.
This will probably be also explain why the Ship of the Straw Hats had a spirit, which appeared after they entered Skypie.
Franky already explained that quite clearly…
It's not going to be some unexplained 'thing'.
it won`t be Lost or what:wassat:

i can only agree with that when you talk about the old yaja, cause i was always asking myself why they had to protect one of the porneglyphes?

mhh i dont know if we should interpret to much in it..having here luffy with wings doesn
t seem to me in any connection with the will of D or the ancient kingdom.
or the old kingdom was full of guys with wings and here again we have to think about enels coverstory ,which won
t be unimportant.

rly interessting how those moon civilisation and enels dreams are connected.. what in the history made them so interested in the moon and to build a civilisation on it. i don
t hope that in the end the ancient civilisation was actually from the moon or some science fiction stuff, but i think oda will sure use it for the conclusion of the overall history.

maybe it`s just a kind of haki..a form of it which they created and so they called it different.
@ Don Flamingo.
I hate to burst your bubble, but the winged people did come from the moon, and migrated to earth when they ran out of resources.

Here is what i think of it:
All the ppl in Bilca, Skypiea, Jaya, probably forgot about their origin ( the moon). However, the city on the moon was called Bilka. Enel come from Bilka which is a sky island. So it seems that in coming to the blue planet, the moon civilization gave the name of their hometown (Bilka) into this sky island. Probably because they missed their home, we can see them crying on the pics. Bilka is the first island colonized by the moon civilization. Then, they probably moved in differents island, and some of them went to the blue sea. At the start, they still know their origin but something happened, probably during the void century, which destroyed all of this. The survivors retained this memory, but over the centuries, this memory has become legend, and today no one know the truth. Thats why Enel wants to go to this "fairy vearth", a place full of vearth, but he does not know that this is his home. Fairy vearth is probably a legend for the sky civilizations, it's like a tale.
@ Don Flamingo.
I hate to burst your bubble, but the winged people did come from the moon, and migrated to earth when they ran out of resources.
how do you know that?
I wonder if the SHs will ever go to the moon. I think that would be a cool arc. Atleast it sounds interesting to me.
how do you know that?
Seems obvious through the ancient drawings that Eneru saw. I imagine if they did come from the earth, Oda would have shown how the winged people went from the earth to the moon and then back again. But he only showed us Ancient Winged people leaving the moon for a new home.
when I look at this arc, I loved it, but there was just one thing I didn't like:
where the hell was that swordsman that traveled around with Garp?
@Yonkou:

He, along with T-Bone, went missing in action after being seen in the background in Ch. 524.

maybe you can show me some links so that i can see on what your conclusion is based on.(but i agree with you non the less)
but in fact i was just hoping\explaining that this old tribe aren`t the ancestors of the ancient kingdom where the D generation comes from.
<– that means that here two different historical tribes should exist(even more counting where the WG comes also from a different tribe from), where the moon-tribe is nowadays known as those who live in the white-sea.
my question was why this tribe got one of the porneglyphs afterall...maybe cause the ancient kingdom-tribe always saw them as friends while the WG-tribe always thought of them as villains and so nowadays just a few rly know that those people in heaven exist, cause the WG vanished them out of the mind.
@PeoplecallmeE
not a bad theory after all..
seeing that the old skypians(those who actually lived in east blue) praised the moon and sacrificed people to him
http://www.onemanga.com/One_Piece/289/19/
sure shows the connection..
and also those who lived all the time in the white seas also praised the vearth which is nothing else than ne soil of the moon.

Cover 27? What is there?
Cover 27 implies that Luffy (and every D I suppose) is a descendant of those winged people, which makes enough sense. Maybe he doesn't have wings the same reason Chimney doesn't have a fish lower half, and yet is a very fast swimmer (According to Oda she's only 1/4th mermaid, same way Luffy would hypothetically be only a fragment "winged").
Maybe the Shandians and all winged people are descendants of D and lack the knowledge of their bloodline. All those years of self imposed isolation and xenophobia caused a dilution of knowledge of their culture. They are knowledgeable of seastone and dials yet they know nothing of the ponelygraphs . It would be possible that the likes of Wiper, Luffy, and Roger shared an extremely powerful bloodline that split into various branches.
If the Lost Civilization was technological advanced what would the world gov. use to defeat them. I believe they used the Devil Fruits to destroy all the technology in battles and used the Yami Yami no Fruit, and Gura Gura fruit to wipe out the cities and and advanced technology. I mean 2 powers that can shatter the sky and swallow the ground could wipe out an entire civilization . Look at what a few quake attacks did to Marineford.
Ahh pwngoat did not participate in the war???? this is madness.

mhh, than iam curious why the WG didnt search for the gura-gura and yami-yami no mie and instead they
re looking for the ancient weapons..
the ancient weapons have to be an invention of the ancient kingdom, seeing that there are location etc on the proneglyphs and to the fact that the WG doesn`t exhibit them.
so when the gura-gura and yami-yami no mie once defeated those ancient weapons..ehhm why not gathering them instead of those ancient weapons?
I rarely see the chapter thread so dead.

where the hell was that swordsman that traveled around with Garp?
He and T-Bone were playing Street Fighter II in the PLR.

He was busy manipulating all the players in the battle to do his bidding without realizing it.

Well it was in the Theory: Advanced weapons vs. Devil Fruits
But the WG has the Devil Fruits already and tries to get the Technology.
They can even somehow ransfer Ki Zarus Beam to a Pacifista…
And we don't know yet, that they didn't search for the yami yami no mi.
Gura gura no mi was already taken.
@DaWebci I absolutely LOVE your ID pic!
Really thinking about it now. The technology for the ancient weapons very well could have come from the moon. That old scientist and his little spacey robots sure did get surprised seeing a full on explosion happening way up there. Imagine Eneru unearths one?

but now enemies of the WG posses them?
giving away such a strong power just like that…ehhm that would be more than stupid!
Now that this war finished
i think bb will be given a bounty of 1.4bil and given emporar status
i think luffys not waking up until his crew come back
1.4 billion…
i don`t even want to know why exactly that bounty..
@Don:
1.4 billion…
i don`t even want to know why exactly that bounty..
well i was gonna say 700mil but it seemed to close to what luffys new bounty would be so i added an extra 700mil
I wonder if shanks is a D. holder because he acts just like the "Ds" would cuz just how they didn't always state dragon's full name or gapr's the same could be for shanks 0.o
Edit: Didn't think my thread would get merged 0.o very unexpected
This chapter was a bit of a disappointment, at least to me. I really wanted to see Shanks and his crew fight.

What else do you expect from ODa he won't show off all his true character designing potential 0.o
I rarely see the chapter thread so dead.
Yeah, well every week without a chapter it turns into the barren hellhole that it is right now. After about 7-10 days people run out of things to talk about.
Anyway, I think next week (and MAYBE the week after) will during at the current timeline, followed by a timeskip the following week (or the week after if we can get two more chapters in the current timeline).
just read this from greg
I was prepared to sign off the CW5 interview as one of the most boring and meandering interviews Oda has lead in the CW series, (just bbehind Amano), which is why I got bored halfway through and skimmed Oda's questions, avoiding discussion.
Last time I'll do that -_-
There's a teacher at school who I discuss OP with. He's a maniac-level fan like myself. Sometimes 30 minutes go by in the teacher's room and we'll still be talking about the most recent chapter. Anyway, he just got CW4 (the shitty stores around us barely stock it) and he texts me at 11 at night, 'DID YOU READ THE COLOR WALK INTERVIEW!?'
Of course I did…..right?
Apparently not. Upon closer inspection, Yanase throws a question back at Oda after discussing 'no matter how much time passes, the characters don't age or change'. Oda says he admires an author that can do that because he isn't sure how to do it himself.
He elaborates, he mentions that A CERTAIN SERIES (probably DB) that was influetial on him used a certain technique to help its characters change over short period of time and that he's been eager to do something similar for a long time and is almost ready to follow suit.
TIME-SKIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII-PUH
so theres a db to dbz time skip coming
would make sense considering how long it really should take for some of the members to come back

I can't imagine more than a year going by for everyone to make it back. Even then that seems like quite a while considering how fast they got to Shaboady in the first place. Again I do expect some design changes, but nothing as fast forwarding as Dragon Ball. Still though with Oda one never knows.
Ok so where do you see a dbz time skip coming? Does Oda says: i'm going to do a time skip like in dbz whooho! ???? No.
Does Dbz time skip have something particular? Time skip in DBZ are just as normal than others stories.
What Oda says: " a certain serie that was influential on him used a CERTAIN TECHNIQUE to help its characters to change over SHORT PERIOD OF TIME"
And I don't see this in DBZ. Exept maybe in the training room.
@People:

He meant the time skip from "db" to "dbz" (which was pretty substantial), not some timeskip within dbz itself..
DB time skip are the same. The time is depending of the tourneys, ( 3years later ect…) There is nothing special behind this. Oda used it in the first chapters (10 years later..). It's not a " certain technique which help the characters to change over a short period of time"

Still in denial? That's cool.

You have all My Respect and Admiration for the Recap you do on OP Chapters Bows
I've been thinking a bit about Shanks and his crew, and I think I might've stumbled upon some interesting info. The first I think is really interesting, and the second one is kind of…far fetched. Then there's a third idea that doesn't have much basis other than giving Rockstar some extra plot significance. But, whatever, you guys be the judge.
The first is about Yasopp, who as we know is Usopp's father. In the event that the Straw Hat Pirates meet the Red Hair Pirates, these father and son would reunite and immediately know each other...or would they?
I suggest that Yasopp doesn't know that Usopp is in Luffy's crew. I mean, it's been years since Yasopp has seen his son, and Usopp's Wanted Poster doesn't have his face or name. Instead it shows a masked man named "Sogeking." Anyone who knows Usopp would immediately recognize him (except Luffy and Chopper, who are naive enough), but Yasopp hasn't seen his son in ages. He's seen Usopp's back (from Luffy's poster), but would have had no idea that "that guy in brown" was his son. I think it might end up being a plot device, just as Sanji's poster was.
The second has to do with the entire Red Hair Pirate Crew, and Sengoku's interaction with Shanks at Marineford. Sengoku places a certain amount of respect and trust in Shanks, saying "If you're the one taking [Whitebeard's and Ace's bodies], it's okay. I will take responsibility." Could Shanks have a hidden connection to the Marines or the World Government? Well, yeah, it's kind of implied that he's got connections to at least Sengoku, one of the Marine big-wigs. I think Shanks and his crew might be antagonists in the future. (Note the words "think" and "might." It's very indefinite.) Sure, he's the guy who inspired Luffy to become a pirate, just as Yasopp inspired Usopp to become a pirate, but wouldn't that make for the ultimate heart-wrencher? If the guy you've been chasing after and trying to surpass, the guy who's your goal turns out to be on the wrong side, wouldn't that be totally EPIC?
I know they're not shown to be anything but nice and carefree unless their friends are hurt or in danger, but Lucky Roo did kill for the first time in One Piece, and then the crew took out Higuma's troupe of bandits. Shanks could've easily knocked everyone there out with Haki without killing anyone. But these people died anyway (or at least one of them. You don't recover from a bullet in the head.). The Straw Hats have been shown to spare the lives of their enemies whenever possible.
Then I've got a small third theory. Rockstar = Franky's father?
Really like the Usopp Yasopp theory, i'm certain the plot will lead right into what you said. Wether its major or not who knows? Usopp is on 3 of the Straw Hats Posters, and he is probably more unknown than Sanji.
Franky is related to a well known pirate I bet. His brother looks to be apart of the White Beard aliance, hahaha. When Franky's blood family is revealed, we can expect Franky's much deserved fleshing out to take place.

If Shanks turns out bad, his epicness would go beyond the scale!
Do you think that after such a great loss that too in succession (loosing his nakama, now loosing his brother), will he become serious, will OP become serious, will he be the same? i hope not
@People:

(a) In Japan and many other countries, the whole manga was called Dragonball. It's only the North American prints that refer to the last half of the manga as DBZ.
(b) Goku became an adult sometime before the end of Dragonball. The last arc of Dragonball is Goku as an adult. The significant change that comes with DBZ is the introduction of Gohan, not Goku growing up.
I'm sure Luffy will stay the same for the most part, just when someone brings up Ace he'll probably sad and whenever he sees the person who killed Ace he'll be pissed and try to fight him. Those are just my guesses.
I hope he doesn't change much either, but like I said I doubt it.
Shanks is feared by the gov. Shanks isn't gonna interfere into anything if the stakes aren't high . Shanks crew could have wiped out everybody at marineford and left. He came to marineford and stopped the war because he cared about the welfare of the world . At heart he is a peaceful man that will go to extreme lengths to secure peace. The World Gov. knows that . If you noticed something Beckman didn't kill Kizaru with a headshot nor did Shanks hit Akainu back. They aren't violent unless you act violently toward them. Nobody attacked them so they didn't fight back its very simple.
He couldn't be an ally of the marines because he is a former Roger pirate, a known criminal and also a Yonkou. Once you are a Yonkou the government won't fight you are almost as strong as they are when it comes down to strength.

I know all that you are saying exept the NA part (too bad for them), then what? It does not change the fact that the time skips in Dragon ball have nothing special, the characters just grow up with the years, it's the most normal time-skip which can be done. However, in the interview, Oda seems to point a particular type of technique.
