@AdmiralYonkouMt.Bandit:
That wasn't blood lust. Smoker and Tashigi just have never seen the marines on a winning high. The thirst for a complete absolute victory and utter defeat of the pirates. Coby's just too sensitive and if he has mantra that probably fucked with his state of mind even more than before.
Then what was the point in having them say those lines? One Piece is a manga that tends to show us facts through character's dialogue or thoughts. In a different manga, we could just take that as their opinion, but with One Piece, that and the picture of Akainu looking insane on the next page is definitely supposed to be an indication of what Akainu is thinking.
It's your opinion that Akainu is akin to BB on that page. What I saw was a loyal marine's unwavering determination, never losing sight of what he needs to do, doing w/e he could to uphold absolute justice and on the other side a pirate drunk on (his new)power determined to put on this big show and leave his mark on the marines/history/the beginning of this new era.
Akainu was most definitely being compared to Blackbeard. On the page before that, Smoker says that both "justice" and "evil" are caught up in the thirst for blood. Then we see Akainu and Blackbeard, and both of them are yelling about killing everyone on the other side. If it weren't for Smoker and Tashigi's inner monologues, I might buy that Akainu and Blackbeard were being shown as opposites, but as it is, that doesn't make any sense.
Also, BB is just the closest thing to a real pirate. Has a unique view on his life and imo hasn't yet committed acts as horrible as other ppl in this manga so far.
I agree and I also think that Blackbeard is just like a Luffy who's willing to do worse things to get what he wants.
See there you go again calling Spandine evil. You use the word far too loosely. Spandine is weak and simply cowered in front of a man with greater power, resolve, and conviction for doing his duty. The difference between the two is quite clear; Spandine happens to enjoy all the cruel things he does in the name of justice because he was given the power to do so.
How is getting pleasure out of doing evil things not evil? Being weak and pathetic, and being an evil person aren't mutually exclusive.
Akainu does the cruel things he does because they need to be done for the sake of justice and peace. The only thing Akainu might enjoy is the fact that with every act that other's may question in the name of justice he gets closer to peace. That's why I say you don't know what bloodlust is…
What reason is there to think the justice he believes in is right? He killed the people of Ohara so he could get to the scholars, but what good did that do? There was no point in killing the scholars in the first place. Even in this war, he's willing to kill people just because they disagree with him on what is right, even if they're on the same side.
It's not my definition of bloodlust you should be questioning, but Oda's. After all, it was Oda who called Akainu bloodthirsty.
Don't get your T-Bone example but Akainu doesn't need justification for his actions.
T-Bone was some minor marine who showed up in the Water 7 arc, while the Strawhats and CP9 were going to Enies Lobby. Every single thing he did portrayed him as a great person. It was very over-the-top, in fact. Akainu is doing the same thing, but in reverse. He never shows any redeeming qualities except loyalty (maybe). Every bit of characterization we have of him paints him as negative. Maybe in another series, where everything is in the gray area, Akainu might actually be on the side of justice, but in One Piece, his methods put him on the side of "absolute justice" which is never shown as good.
Everything he's done is for the greater good so from a different perspective they are automatically justified. Whether you recognize it or not or won't admit it. He doesn't need to fit your sense or definition of good to do something for the sake of justice.
Just because he believes he is doing things for the sake of good doesn't mean that he is good. Otherwise there would be no such thing as good or evil at all, since there are so many definitions.
Obviously Akainu feels justified in what he does, but that doesn't mean he is justified.
