This chapter made one thing obvious and clear…
! Ace gonna die.
Is it the cool guy attitude he had on the last page? Or why?
Cause really i'm like wow! I have the complete opposite feelings.

@Thousand:
Actually I think Joz's fruit might be a little more complex than that. Not saying he's a Logia type but crystals do have a certain reputation of propagation so I have a feeling he's gonna grow a big stumpy diamond thing that looks like the end of a pencil. His actual arm though, he'll never get back.
I don't mind this. I'm no expert on diamonds so I wouldn't mind his arm being replaced with some huge sharp/rigid unrefined dagger like diamond.
@wintergt:
Agreed about Jozu (altho maybe he can weld the arm back on, but nah).. but Marco, it's a bit cruel but he could burn him to a crisp and let the phoenix rize from the ashes
I'm gonna stick with a statue fruit for now. It makes the most sense, as he turns into a huge statue that is seemingly made of bronze/metal/gold (can't tell what yet).
Now I can see after this war a doctor reattaching Jozu's arm for sure even tho I'd like to see him just be one handed(I'm hoping Aokiji shatters his frozen arm). He doesn't seem like he's diamond all the time so either through melding or the surgical way I can see it be done from a logical stand point.
As for Sengoku his DF can be a lot of different things and a simple approach would be apt but I can't help but think Oda's gonna make it in the hax range of WB's DF. I just don't see him being a logia. A statue DF with some special attribute or some unthought of ability would be fine.
@SMUDGE:
Marco should be able to help regenerate with Ace's fire. As for Joz I was interested at the idea of his two limbs being fused back together in his diamond form.
(unlikely but perhaps possible)
Since when does Ace's DF grants anyone(including himself) a regenerative/healing component to it? I thought it was clear that the blue flames from the phoenix regenerates Marco? All Ace's fire would do is burn him severely(I would've liked to see a flashback joke about that).
@lil:
if it was so easy for kizaru to shoot a beam through the key, wouldnt it have been equally easy for him to put a beam through luffy or ace's brain?
in case you forgot, this is a shounen manga, not a seinen manga.
@Zik:
Since when does Ace's DF grants anyone(including himself) a regenerative/healing component to it?
This isn't anyone though, this is someone that regenerates using fire.
I thought it was clear that the blue flames from the phoenix regenerates Marco? All Ace's fire would do is burn him severely
The translation said something along the lines of.
'he can recover from any kind of attack along with his flames'
I don't see the reason for the two different flames to have a different effect. Especially as the history behind the phoenix is the use of fire to heal.
Yeah but all his toys are probably only available for a limited time only. I vote Franky instead.
Yes but this way Jose could become a collector's item. If he got Franky's help he'd have to wear a speedo. We don't need that.
I thought it was weird that mr 3 could just make a key in his hand without specially designing it to the lock in the handcuffs, but that is just a technicality.
No way, it's pacifista-arm José or bust!
Erm, where does the spelling José come from? Did I miss something? :unsure:
… I'd like to know when and how Mr. 3 got up there... lol
And he's destined to get in the ring with Burgess before the story is over.
So now that Ace has finally been freed, does that mean that he can finally ditch those gay shoes?
Well there is no official translation, right? Anyway, it's an inside joke that stems from some group translating his name as 'Jose' on OneManga. Urouge ran with it and started calling him José el Diamante.
José would be fitting, since there was an actual pirate named José Gaspar. Since Shirohige's name is half of the real Blackbeard's, and Marco is (probably) named after Marco Polo, it would be fitting.
I'm gonna come right out and say it. Luffy's war allies are better then the crew itself. Buggy, Ivan, Jinbei, Boa, Mr,1,2,3 and Croc kick so much ass right now. Between Ivan's solo'ing Kuma(Brook), Jinbei throwing building sized water logs(Luffy), MR.3 saving the fucking day(Sanji), Buggy rallying even more allies for them(Ussop), Crocodile being a general hardass(Zoro), MR.2 owning everyone's hearts(Franky) and Boa taking on f***ing SMOKER(Nami). When the crew comes back they better come back with a bang.
Maybe it's just me, but those last words that Ace says to Luffy gives me the impression that he his mad. Especially the panel where his eyes are blacked out and he says, "Never listening to a word of what I say."
I could be wrong, I just got that impression.
That aside, great chapter. Can't wait for 572.
@Fire Fist:

Oooh I never heard about Gasper before. And I do like José the best out of the ways his name is spelled. And then I am reminded of "Eustass". XD

I wouldn't put it past Oda. But we should probably wait for an official romanization (if there ever is one). We definitely don't want another Enel/Ener/Eneru case on our hands.
(P.S. Don't forget that Thatch fits in this theme too).
Sense:
Well, Luffy said that Ace would be mad if he ever did something like this. It's natural for an older brother to worry about the safety of his younger though. That's where the anger would come from. But I'm sure that will have a back seat to more pressing matters now.

Woah, woah, woah. Let's not get carried away, here. I want to be perfectly clear that we use "Jose" as a joke. Aohige has given us definitive reasons as to why it is not correct, and the name (regardless of spelling) should be pronounced like "Joe's" or "Joe's oo". This means a hard J sound at the beginning instead of the Spanish H sound.
Maybe it's just me, but those last words that Ace says to Luffy gives me the impression that he his mad. Especially the panel where his eyes are blacked out and he says, "Never listening to a word of what I say."

Well Luffy did say he would be angry if he helped him.

He was aiming for the heads he just missed.@SMUDGE:

I don't see the reason for the two different flames to have a different effect. Especially as the history behind the phoenix is the use of fire to heal.
Traditionally the phoenix dies and is reborn in flames. There is nothing about healing others.
So now that Ace has finally been freed, does that mean that he can finally ditch those gay shoes?
Since Ace wears fire proof clothing, such as his shorts or hat ( which Teach took for Stronger), those slippers will probably burn away pretty soon.
A lot of people are glad Ace is free.
So is Vegeta.
Traditionally the phoenix dies and is reborn in flames. There is nothing about healing others.
Unless, of course, you play Final Fantasy.
Since Ace wears fire proof clothing, such as his shorts or hat ( which Teach took for Stronger), those slippers will probably burn away pretty soon.
Even with all the crimes we've seen in this manga, and all the horrible things the Marines have done in this war, nothing is more dastardly than taking Ace's awesome hat away from him. Blackbeard has already elevated himself to the story's biggest antagonist with such a cruel and unnecessary action.

I don't see how you don't see the difference between the two since Oda went out of his way to make Marco's flames blue and Ace's the normal red/orange.
It's yet to be seen that he can regenerate any fire.

No, Devi's Fruit powers don't affect clothing of the user like destroying it.

I can't wait for a couple-of-years long arc about Ace leading the Whitebeard pirates on a quest to reclaim his lost hat.

Remember the robot-looking NW pirate shown earlier in this war?
It'd be hilarious if the doc who fixed him up attached a fallen Pacifista's cyborg arm to Joz.
It's about the right size too.

That hat will have a bounty before long.

But then Jose would have to give up the opportunity to have awesome robot pincers like that dude has.
Besides, lasers are illegal for a wrestling match.
Oh, and about the José joke discussion above.
Japanese spelling for the spanish name José is ホセ. Pronunciated Ho-seh.
Not even remotely close to ジョズ, Joz. :)

Honestly, I could not disagree more, Seriously these guys have bored me completely shitless, except for mr. 2 bon clay they have been nothing more then an annoyance and time consuming stupidity, and just some of them are worthless asshats croc mainly hated him before he joined this war party.
They can't hold a candle to the strawhats in any way shape and form and I'll be the HAPPIEST person alive to get this damn fight over with and get to having the crew reassemble as soon as possible.
Even though the chapter was amazing, it's the first time that I've been heavily annoyed at a minor development in One Piece this much.
What's up with that ridiculous accuracy, Kizaru?
I mean, shouldn't everyone be dead right now? I'm just glad those skills aren't available to Akainu, or WB, Jozu, all the Commanders, and everyone who isn't a Logia would be dead right now.
Is it because he doesn't like killing? He has shown no qualms about doing it in the past. I'm seriously very annoyed. I know these things always lead to "BUT MORIA COULD PIERCED RUFFY IN THE BLACKBOXES!!!!", but really, Oda could've solved that key problem a billion ways that didn't involve Kizaru making a completely insane millimetric sniper shot from 700 yards aimed in a split second. I am heavily annoyed.
I don't think Oda should have shown that kind of prowess, as it basically renders all the battles with Kizaru in them so far completely unrealistic and forced.
And for God's sake I know that Oda doesn't kill but that's exactly why he shouldn't show that Kizaru can basically kill anyone in a split second with extreme accuracy. Everything feels forced now… cries
I had up till now believed that the conclusion of all this sequence was not on a whim but that it actually made sense storywise and that the developments had a reason to be.
Basically, unless it turns out much later that Kizaru hates killing, and because of his whole attempting to kill Zoro I find it highly unlikely, I won't ever be reconciled with this piece of information, which was completely needless, by the way.
I can deal with Luffy's insane luck and his water bubble landing on top of him in Alabasta, but I can't deal with this. The worst thing of it all is that I'll keep reading it, but man do I hate this. It's small, but it just screams that certain things within the story don't happen because the author whimsically wills it so, and I simply FUCKING HATE THAT. Unless Oda gives a character reason as to why Kizaru doesn't kill, I will hate this more than Pell, which I learned to live with quite well.
It's like fucking showing that Sengoku can snap his fingers and kill anyone at will, and then all of this happens. WHY THE HELL DIDN'T YOU USE IT THEN? AM I TALKING CRAZY HERE?/rant
It would have been so easy if kizaru just aimed at luffys head. The part where the key was destroyed was sooo random… I agree that it confuses the hell out of everyone who reads this.
Why does he have to hate killing? Why can't he just hate, for example, fighting in a cowardly fashion? Many people consider a sniper to be a coward's way of fighting. Also, I don't recall any point in the story that Kizaru missed with his laser except for when Rayleigh physically altered the shot by kicking his leg. Someone as strong as Kizaru probably simply prefers fighting face to face.
He was aiming for the heads he just missed.
Traditionally the phoenix dies and is reborn in flames. There is nothing about healing others.
Never heard of phoenix crying its healing tears?

Blackbeard has already elevated himself to the story's biggest antagonist with such a cruel and unnecessary action.
And this is when you know that Oda does his job good.
As it has been established through out the whole series, a true man is made with his hige and wara. With out the hat Ace was only but a whiner. Who will be next to fall by the hand of Teach? Awesomestache of Marines? Giraffehead of Revolution? The terror knows no bounds.
@S.C.:
No, Devi's Fruit powers don't affect clothing of the user like destroying it.
Right.
Next thing you tell me Pirate Summit is a methaphore.
When Luffy was impaled by Jango in the back of the head during the Kuro head, that put to rest the possibility that anybody in the series would die from a well placed shot to the head… well, except for that guy Lucky Roux plugged in Chapter 1, and Bellemere.
The problem is that he can pull of a shot harder than a headshot, from approximately 5-8 blocks away without it being a technique with some kind of warmup.
The other problem is that sure, maybe he doesn't like to snipe, but putting one through Luffy or WB's head at point blank range is cowardly how? He did it with Marco, but because Marco can survive it, nothing happenned. So how the hell do you explain that he doesn't simply shoot for the eyes when he can do so with ease??
I was okay with Marco receiving a Headshot becuase I thought that Kizaru was spraying and praying, but this is a major inconsistency regardless of how you look at it, unless Kizaru doesn't like killing. Because let's be honest he could have done it a billion trillion times.
oh come on guys quit over reacting. how about every movie that has the main person never get hit by the millions of bullets shot at him. or hell in one piece when charging enies lobby none of the strawhats got hit by any bullets. or anyone in one piece basically ever getting hit by a bullet.
or why not complain that kizaru didn't spam his kick that destroys entire islands of mangroves and shabondy. or aikanu not spamming his meteor attack non stop. and hitting that key is less bullshit than the water falling back down on top of luffy.
the point of that was just more suspense, of omg it was stopped and then a more dramatic saving and entrance for ace. nothing more. it had nothing to do with kizaru not wanting to kill or having amazing accuracy or anything else. quit overthinking every thing
also whats thsi talk of stronger having ace's clothes and hat? where is it shown that blackbeard took those things
Why does he have to hate killing? Why can't he just hate, for example, fighting in a cowardly fashion? Many people consider a sniper to be a coward's way of fighting. Kizaru wasn't the right choice in this scene. The guy had the time while fighting with WB to just shoot a beam so accurate from that distance and blow the key away. What stopped him unaccurately firing let's say 10 beams through luffys body? He did pierce Zoro back then at Shabondy while tooking him by surprise… So?
You all are, assuming, that his laser that was shot with the precision to destroy the key was powerful enough to penetrate Ace's skull without a doubt.
If there was a risk of it not penetrating, the best use of it is to destroy the key, which is guranteed to be destroyed by it.
Has anyone answered as to how Mr 3 was on the execution platform yet?

Exactly. He had so many people that could have done it instead. This sucks.
I'll recover. But this sucks.
ASS.
@Aohige: So he can shoot something as thin as a key in half and he couldnt've put one through Ace's eye? Cause sure a retina is a lot harder to penetrate than an iron key. Really I'm usually the guy defending Oda's consistency but this time he fucked up.
The shot was just too ridiculous to defend. The reason I hate this so much is because I want to give it a reason to be, I want to be able to convince myself that this makes sense, but I can't. You may say I'm thinking too much, but I want my stories to make sense.
It would have been so easy if kizaru just aimed at luffys head. The part where the key was destroyed was sooo random… I agree that it confuses the hell out of everyone who reads this.
inconsistancies are there because the balance of power isn't near equal
only ones who could find marines were wb jozu marco and ace
ace was caught so that left wb jozu and marco for the admirals
then we still had all the vice admirals dealing with the captains
then you got shichibukai plus about 10 kuma bots i don't care if boa been takin them down it makes no sense why i haven't seen moria flamingo or kuma and why mihawk seems to be unable to defeat anyone
then theirs sengoku and garp
fair enough what garp did was fine but why did sengoku wait so long before transforming he should have smacked luffy out as soon as garp got knocked out
and sht oda should kill wb already like seriously hes taken way too many injuries its just a matter how oda plans on killinging him
wtf happened to akanu and ajouko
though i found the chapter to be great i know alot o things going on are for story sake but at least bringin in shanks would have even things out a bit
good chapter tho knew ace woudl be realeased which is great just means
the crew will be coming back soon
oda finished with all the animal coverstorys of the main crew fresh round of where are they now cover stories?
@AdmiralYonkouMt.Bandit:
Emphasis on his flames.
I don't see how you don't see the difference between the two since Oda went out of his way to make Marco's flames blue and Ace's the normal red/orange.
I see the difference, my point is that it may still remain a possibility as Oda hasn't written in stone that he can't use other fire in conjunction with his own abilities.
By your logic Marco would be burnt by any flames, except his own.
@Kairouseki:
Has anyone answered as to how Mr 3 was on the execution platform yet?
No, because we're not Oda and don't expect us to be.
The first two executioners were taken down by Crocodile, and fell off the platform.
That's a perfect time for Mr.3 to take clothes from one of their bodies (which fell far below), and sneak up there.
You all are, assuming, that his laser that was shot with the precision to destroy the key was powerful enough to penetrate Ace's skull without a doubt.
If there was a risk of it not penetrating, the best use of it is to destroy the key, which is guranteed to be destroyed by it.
This is probably it.
Has Oda ever shown us any material of One Piece universe being more durable than the human body?

It's all about the risk taken. You're assuming, 100% without a doubt, that he could have killed Ace.
Kizaru may have doubts about that, and figured destroying the key was much more a sure victory.
Even though the chapter was amazing, it's the first time that I've been heavily annoyed at a minor development in One Piece this much.

It look like kizaru had allot of time to aim to tell the truth . It was a while after we see him beam WB. Plus i don't think kizaru would turn his back on WB. Plus this is OP i sure people could dodge a beam from a certain distance. You would be able to see a beam of light coming at you .
I don't think kizaru beam attacks move any where near speed of light lol. We had just past few chapter kizaru shooting beam at WB and marco had time to get in front of wb and block them lol.
@UsoppSpell: As for the key fiasco, I just like to think that Kizaru either A) wanted to crush Luffy's heart by destroying Ace's only hope of escaping, and/or B) wanted to capture Luffy & Ace alive (ironically) to be executed together, or C) simply wanted to delay them so Sengoku could open his can of whoop-ass.
Not to mention Aohige's point. We don't know for sure that Kizaru could've killed either of them with that shot, and maybe he only had a split-second to do something and decided destroying the key could be the best thing to do on such short notice.
There's lots of possibilities, and we can't read Kizaru's mind, so stop bitching and think about it. It isn't that big of a deal even if it was a slip-up.
You can convince yourself that it makes sense. You're just not trying hard enough.
